White House: About closing Gitmo …
posted at 10:15 am on September 25, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
When Barack Obama took office in January, he deliberately chose to make the closing of the detention center at Guantanamo Bay his first project, and promised to have it accomplished in a year. Critics scoffed, especially since Obama made this bold pledge without any hint of a plan as to how to fulfill it. Obama attempted to outsource it to other nations and discovered that most weren’t particularly eager to house terrorists just to get Obama off the hook for a really foolish pledge.
Today, the Washington Post reports what all of us knew eight months ago — that Gitmo will remain open after Obama’s deadline, and his incompetence means it will remain open for an undetermined length of time:
With four months left to meet its self-imposed deadline for closing the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the Obama administration is working to recover from missteps that have put officials behind schedule and left them struggling to win the cooperation of Congress.
Even before the inauguration, President Obama’s top advisers settled on a course of action they were counseled against: announcing that they would close the facility within one year. Today, officials are acknowledging that they will be hard-pressed to meet that goal.
The White House has faltered in part because of the legal, political and diplomatic complexities involved in determining what to do with more than 200 terrorism suspects at the prison. But senior advisers privately acknowledge not devising a concrete plan for where to move the detainees and mishandling Congress.
In the real world, people create plans first, and then figure out the deadlines. In the Obama administration, the president sets deadlines and leaves everyone else scrambling on how to meet them. Without a firm plan and especially without consulting Congress, this left the White House looking for ad hoc solutions that mainly relied on the willingness of other countries to accept people the United States rejected for their ties to terrorists.
Not only did that flop very badly and very publicly, it backfired on the rare occasion of success. The US sent four Uighirs from Gitmo to Bermuda without telling the British about it — and the Brits supply the security for Bermuda. That not only created unnecessary diplomatic tensions between the US and the UK, but it also created tensions between the UK and China, who want those Uighurs for their terrorist activities at home.
It was an appalling display of diplomatic incompetence, initiated by the incompetent manner in which this entire project has been handled. White House counsel Gregory Craig has taken the temporary hit for the failure, and will get rewarded for his loyalty with a diplomatic post. The failure here, though, starts at the top. Obama has a habit of making unrealistic goals and announcing them with little preparation, and this is just one in a series of examples — the stimulus, the health-care overhaul, cap and trade, automaker bailouts, and so on. This administration has delivered a constant series of data points for a conclusion of rank incompetence, and this is one of the big, red marks on that series.

If he realizes his mistake and backs down, we should thank him for that (even if it was idiotic from the get). I do not want to use this as a political wedge issue, there is still time to do what is right. The right thing is to keep these detainees out of the US.

Now, today, there is backpedaling on the timeline…!
You’re right, a string of data points that ends right at rank incompetence. Obama is sure great at publishing edicts, then trying to make the serfs perform miracles in order to fulfill them. I thought he was the one who could walk on water…. maybe not.

This is so classic liberal. Obama makes grand promises nobody with a brain believes, reaps all the benefits of his lie when the brainless elect him to office, then blames everyone else for his own inability to achieve what everyone knew was impossible. Obama wanted, and got, the power, prestige, and money he wanted by telling the lies people wanted to hear, and now everyone else gets stuck with the bill.
Suckers.
Socratease on September 25, 2009 at 10:35 AM
I’m betting that his latest glaring act of incompetence was telling the Russians that we know about the Qom nuclear enrichment facility. There’s no other explanation for how Iran found out that the West knew, when they found out. Obama is going to get a lot of people killed.
ProfessorMiao on September 25, 2009 at 10:35 AM
Obama has gotten so far on his ability to spew nonsense, he’s come to believe that there’s no difference between saying something and accomplishing something. For him, just saying Gitmo would be closed was the accomplishment. He figured he would collect the praises of the MSM and the Left (that’s what he’s all about, after all) and he never really foresaw that people would expect it to actually happen. Now Odumbo has painted himself into a corner and he doesn’t know what to do next.
Just another example of The One as the classic “Hothouse Genius.” Praised and adored for his entire career for doing absolutely nothing, now nothing is all he knows how to do. And he can’t understand why the praise has stopped.
Next time, maybe we should all elect a grownup to be POTUS. Just a thought, 52% of America.

Okay, I’ve got the plan, and it’s a two-for for this administration.
The Prez can hire the company that made those resort islands off of Dubai to create an island for all the GITMO detainees. Then, as the island start to erode away (those things require maintenance you know), he can blame global warming and the rising sea-levels to forward his cap-and-trade legislation.

This Gitmo matter is NOT, per se, about governing or competence or any other technocratic abilities. It is really about good judgment applied—and of having or recognizing it.
Mr. Joe’s view is correct. If the issue is “to close the Gitmo detention center,” then the question is to be put starting with “whether” and not “how.” But, quarreling about closing Gitmo totally misses the real point here because, despite that the Left has demonized—no, DEVILIZED—everything and everyone associated with it, that jail was actually meant to hold important enemy combatants well away from the battlefield so as to lessen their danger to our servicemen. (This is not even mentioning to obtain intelligence and, later, to bring criminal charges where possible and warranted. These uses can be crucial, but are secondary purposes of the detention center, in my view.)
The President has just realized that his predecessor had very good reason to establish the Gitmo prison. It was not to punish the enemy without trial—having used torture to obtain the self-incriminating evidence with which to convict them. No, the Gitmo prison has national security value because of its intended purposes, as I said before. Actually.
Let me be clear. The Gitmo jail helps attain VICTORY, Mr. President, in the war on terror. Absolutely! That is why you must use another prison to hold the terrorist enemy combatants, if not Gitmo. Of course, your Leftist allies will then develop the same political allergies with your “New Gitmo” as they—and you—have with the current one. All the while, you and I, Mr. President, will still have a war on terror to win—or to lose.
So, is Mr. Obama going to stop distracting himself with a silly leftist trophy issue of “Close Gitmo! Now!!” and lead the war on terror—the “good war”—as he ought to? Unfortunately, I fear I know his answer. He is welcome to prove me wrong.
