WaPo: ACORN a reverse Robin Hood
posted at 12:15 pm on September 25, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Robin Hood stole from the rich and gave to the poor. According to the Washington Post, ACORN took millions of dollars intended to go to the poor, and gave them to politicians — and themselves. Newly-revealed records show that ACORN may have a lot more problems than giving advice to purported child-prostitution traffickers:
Documents released by a Senate Republican on Thursday show that leaders of the ACORN community organizing network transferred several million dollars in charitable and government money meant for the poor to arms of the group that have political and sometimes profit-making missions.
ACORN’s tax-exempt groups and allied organizations, long a target of conservative ire, used more than half their charitable and public money in 2006 to pay other ACORN affiliates, according to an analysis by the tax staff of Sen. Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa).
On Thursday, Grassley called the transactions a “big shell game” and said ACORN donors may be surprised by how the liberal group known for helping the poor obtain housing and health care was spending their money. He urged the Internal Revenue Service to take a closer look.
According to the Grassley report, charities “are being used to raise monies which are then funneled to other charities or to other organizations for purposes other than what the donor may have intended. . . . Dollars raised for charitable [purposes] appear to be used for impermissible lobbing and political activity.”
We can thank Andrew Breitbart, James O’Keefe, and Hannah Giles for making ACORN interesting to the media, after years of ignoring allegations of corruption and fraud within the organization. The team from Big Government showed a systemic pattern of disregard for the law, especially on tax evasion. This, however, will hit a lot closer to home, especially as ACORN attempts to raise funds to compensate for the loss of business after Congress and the executive branch rushed to cut ties to the group.
In response, Bertha Lewis noted that the problems Grassley documents comes from 2006-7, under different ACORN management. ACORN founder Wade Rathke ran the group in that period, and redirected funds to other groups he ran, including millions from Project Vote. Lewis says that these problems have since been corrected, and Rathke left his position at ACORN in June 2008 — but remains as ACORN’s “chief organizer.”
Grassley has requested that ACORN be removed from the list of charities to which federal employees can donate during their charitable-contribution drives. Hopefully, the IRS has something a little more serious in mind.

Bertha Lewis is talented in one ongoing area: the “yes, but” retort.

Bertha responds, “yes, but…”
Ask her anything, and the answer will be, “yes, but…”

More fundamentally, we need to stop the government’s rush to give billions of dollars to community organizing groups, to “transform communities.” The Obamacare bills are larded up with such billions. This allows our politicians to claim that they are helping the poor while they know all along that the money is being misused, yet they maintain “plausible deniability.” The ACORN tapes should make implausible deniability regarding all community organizing groups, not just ACORN.

Right, the Grassley and WaPo reports are closer to the heart of the beast than pimps and prostitutes. But still we’re barely scratching the surface of the corruption and toxicity that is ACORN. Now that O’Keefe, Giles and Breitbart have the skin off this onion, layers will be falling off for months to come.

This, in a nut shell, is part and parcel the modus oprendi of The Chicago Way. Dress a program up in altrusism as an un-impeachable vehicle to conduct rampant cronyism.
The other “part” of that “parcel” is the heavy handed tactics by governmental offices to make life difficult on any who oppose or shed light (Blow the whistle on) what is actually going on. If that fails to get the attention of opponents, escalate via threats of plubicizing any dirt on the “messengers” to either silence, or discredit should they fail to comply.
See: the fate of Obama’s opponents in the Illinois Senate race.
Basically, the Obama WH is the equivilent to a Mayor Daley’s office on the Potomac. Look forward to incriminating “stories” Giles, O’Keefe and Breitbart in the coming days. If this bears no fruit, increased references to a “newspaper bailout” to remind the MSM that they should tread carefully in running with this story if they want access to Guv largesse, ala Blago, the Trib and Wrigley Feild. Same ball game.

Zelsdorf Ragshaft on September 25, 2009 at 12:43 PM
Ed,
I’ve said this many times, sometimes here.
ACORN is a racketeering organization which enriches its staff through fraud on the government (federal, state and local), and buys protection from prosecution by sharing the proceeds with the Democratic party (federal, state and local), particularly Democratic incumbents. The predicate RICO acts here are primarily interstate wire fraud (email).
Democratic officeholders across the country are hideously vulnerable to federal prosecution for conspiracy with ACORN and its staff to violate 18 United States Code section 1861, et seq. The various Democratic party organizations, particularly the fund-raising ones, are likewise vulnerable to federal prosecution and even Teamster Union style federal receivership as co-conspirators. Their funds could be seized.
This is a big hairy deal. The Democrats are not just in bed with gangsters, they ARE gangsters themselves.
Deep Throat was absolutely right in saying “Follow the money. Always follow the money.” Do so with ACORN, and follow the money wherever it goes.

Many years ago, my wife and I were “Secret Shoppers” at a nationwide fast-food outlet. We would go in, surreptitiously note how long it took to be waited on, if we were greeted with a smile, if the food was hot and to order, etc.
The servers and staff were aware that there were these secret shoppers, but never knew who they were, so they had to treat everyone nicely, ethically and honestly.
What needs to be done, for all these tax-exempt organizations at any rate, is to have secret shoppers set up to do the O’Keefe/Giles to them. It should be a government operation, and if there is any hanky-panky going on, they loose their status.
That would be a stimulus package expense I could support.

I hardly think the management is “different”. Consider: The Secretary/Treasurer under Wade Rathke’s tenure as President of ACORN International of 2007 and 2007, was a lady by the name of Maude Hurd. This is the same Maude Hurd who was the president of Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) — domiciled in Little Rock, Arkansas but HQ’d in New Orleans — in 2006 and 2007, AND is still president of ACORN per their filing with LA SoS for the period ending 1/10/09.
Unless she has been replaced since January 10, 2009, (why does no one put her in the spotlight?) she is still the President of ACORN (the not “International” one) AND the overseer of all state branches of ACORN if the Form 990 which ACORN files at the state level are all the same one that is prepared and filed by the one Maude Hurd’s HQ prepares.
And if Maude Hurd has been replaced, why hasn’t ACORN filed the statement of change to that effect?

Full lyrics:
What we’re gonna do right here is go back
Way back into time
When the only people that existed were Troglodytes
Cave men, cave woman, Neadrothol, Troglodytes
Imagine the average cave man at home
Listening to his stereo
Sometimes he’d get up and dance
He’d move something like this “dance dance”
He’d get tired of dancing alone and look in the mirror
And say “gotta find a woman”
“Gotta find a woman, gotta find a woman, gotta find a woman”
Then he’d go down to the lake where all the girls
Would be swimming or washing clothes or something
And he’d grab one by the hair
You can’t do that today fellas
‘Cause it might come off
You have a hand full of hair
And she’d be swimming away from you
This was a big woman, big
Her name was Bertha, Bertha Butt — one of the Butt sisters
She looked down on him
And started to crush him
Then she began to play him
He looked up at her and said “sock it to me”
“Sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me”
She looked down on him
And said “I’ll sock it to you daddy”
And you know what he said
He started it all way back then
I ain’t gonna lie to you
He said “right on, right on”
Hot pants, hot pants
Uh uh uh.

ACORN is worthy of our contempt. But so is the GOP. They’ve been picking their noses and caving in to baseless threats of being accused of racism in opposing criminal organizations such as this. The same thing applies for all those big bank foundations that funnelled ACORN money to get ACORN not to call them racists.
The GOP needs to get as many black conservatives as it can (Steele, Sowell, Williams, Star Parker, et al.) to chime in that rooting out corruption isn’t racism.
Additionally, I urge an end to the grant money flowing out of DC because they can’t get an accounting of it. If these organizations are so worthy, they can make their pitches to their local communities who, in turn, can observe first hand whether these organizations are so worthy.
One last thing, I wouldn’t mind seeing the federal government beef up IRS staffing if those new employees were devoted to reviewing the information returns filed by large foundations to confirm that they are making grants to 501(c)(3) recipients. And I wouldn’t mind closer scrutiny of individual returns to better ensure that those who claim charitable deductions are actually contributing the money to 501(c)(3) recipients.

Don’t the Republicans share some of the blame for this organization, not only for ignoring the outrageous behavior but actually abetting it?
The Republican party controlled congress for most of that time.
This is one reason I quit donating to the NRCC. They totally abrogated their responsibilities and had a much too cozy relationship with the Democrats when they controlled the congress.
There are some people in our party that needs to be shamed.

Soon, if not already the word ACORN will mean something that grows on an oak tree like it did before we ever heard the name Obama.
One of the worst fears I had after the dreadful election day last year was that ACORN would invade every corner of our society in one way or another.
That fear has abated. In the near term the acronym will be associated with a (alleged) criminal enterprise and no politician or journalist will speak the name in a positive way.
An acorn will once again be just an acorn.
