Video: CNN discovers what an unruly protest looks like
posted at 2:20 pm on September 25, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
With all of the media handwringing about the potential for violence at Congressional town-hall meetings in Augutst — potential only realized when unions and counterprotesters began attacking ObamaCare opponents — one has to marvel at the lack of any such speculation at the G-20 protests in Pittsburgh. Of course, the media didn’t bat an eye at the larger implications of the real violence from the same leftist crowd in Saint Paul, Minnesota, during the Republican convention, either. It seems that conservatives exercising free speech in a passionate but responsible manner freaks out the national media far more than leftists engaged in actual political violence.
Case in point — this report from CNN’s Brian Todd to Wolf Blitzer yesterday (via Doug Powers):
The key moment in this clip comes late in the clip. After noting that Todd got teargassed as a consequence of reporting from the protest, Blitzer emphasizes that Todd has a press credential to cover the protests. Um, okay, but that doesn’t mean Todd won’t get teargassed if he’s standing at the front line of the protests, as he was. Does Blitzer hold the police responsible for Todd being in the vicinity — especially after the clip clearly shows that police warned the crowd (and Todd) several times before firing the teargas canisters? I had no idea press passes were that magical.
Compare this to Susan Roesgen’s reporting from the Chicago Tea Party in April, when CNN warned that the report was not “family viewing”:
CNN eventually dumped Roesgen for this, but they aired her report at the time. Notice that Todd doesn’t challenge any of the protesters around him (which is the professional way to report on the event, of course). However, CNN and Todd also didn’t go around looking for the nuttiest signs they could highlight, and no one in this clip ever starts speculating as to whether this violent protest means that the Left is inherently violent or could start attacking politicians at the drop of a hat — unlike how the media has treated the Tea Party movement.

These are right wing protesters, right?
And Wolf Blitzer is a super genius.
BadgerHawk on September 25, 2009 at 2:23 PM
But… don’t the protesters realize they’re getting $300 of stimulus money?
Daggett on September 25, 2009 at 2:23 PM
How many are at the protests? If it’s comparable or more than the 9/12 thing is it evidence that people are “waking up” or something? Or can we just dismiss these protesters as loons?

No need to speculate when it’s actually happening on camera.

Another fine example of why conservatives hate the MSM. The Tax Day Chicago still pisses me off. Hope she is still unemployed.

Same as the A.N.S.W.E.R. rallies on the DC mall.
I saw them. Our “media” never showed the red flags and the black flags. They never showed the obscene signs advocating violence against the President and the troops. They never showed the anarchists and the communists, nor did they show the trash and the crap they left sticking on public property.
All we ever would see is a few kindly grandmothers who made up .02% of the protest.
We don’t have a free press, we don’t even have a press. Being completely in the dark would be preferable to being lied to continually.

Well, Ed, Todd’s a “real” journalist working for a “real” media organization, which these cops, who were acting stupidly, epically failed to appreciate.

I can hardly fault Wolf for not being quick on his feet after seeing his pitiful display of (lack of) knowledge on Jeopardy. I’ve started to warm to the notion that Wolf probably just reads the words they put up on the screen as best as he can, and it’s amazing that he is even able to do that.
stldave on September 25, 2009 at 2:30 PM
And rolling a huge dumpster down the road makes what statement? I will not insult loons by calling these ignorant low-lifes that name.
WashJeff on September 25, 2009 at 2:30 PM
Interesting questions, on some level, but not as interesting as actually addressing the ones in the post itself about the media’s willful blindness toward violent protest from the Left.
venividivici on September 25, 2009 at 2:30 PM
Rush is right–the media only reports protesters as ‘leftists’ when they’re somewhat peaceful. But when they turn violent, all of a sudden the same protesters are now ‘anarchists’ to make it appear that they’re both leftists and right-wing.
The fact is liberals are violent when they protest.
And when the Tea Party happened guess how many riot police were present and how many arrests were made–None.
But conservatives are the violent ones. Mhm.
Enoxo on September 25, 2009 at 2:30 PM
Ha.
Wolf Blitzer got his ass royally kicked on ‘celebrity’ Jeopardy by Conan O’Brien’s side-kick. ‘Nuff said.
He’s obviously an ignoramus, and here he is simply doing his master’s bidding. Bending and twisting the ‘news’ to their self-serving needs.

To be fair, these G-[pick your number] summits are always accompanied with an international collection of professional protesters and street thugs. They always vandalize the host city (or surrogate location the year the venue was an isolated resort in Canada). It’s not news that there will be rioting.
highhopes on September 25, 2009 at 2:32 PM
I’ve gone into the midst of some pretty angry protests before…but these dolts who always show up at the G-20 (or whatever) summits are the most violent for sure. I’m surprised these people don’t tackle and beat every news crew out there, since they represent those corporations.
JetBoy on September 25, 2009 at 2:32 PM
Oh my God! Those Police launched tear gas right at the crowd, as if they didn’t know that Brian Todd from CNN was there with proper press credentials. Ya’ right. This has Bush/Cheney/Halliburton/Blackwater, written all over it.
ronnyraygun on September 25, 2009 at 2:33 PM
Thanks for laughs, Daggett.
And, I wonder if Wolf thinks he’s still on “Jeopardy” set and is wishing he had a Pass like Todd so he could use it to run into hallway screaming…

We need a complete head count by race- I’d say at least a trillion protesters. And I saw far too many white faces in that crowd.
Monica on September 25, 2009 at 2:34 PM
Lovely how Blitzer interjects that the reporter has “authority and permission to be where you are” ignoring that the loud clear repeated warning did include direction that you were in violation of PA law if you stayed in the vicinity “no matter what your purpose”.
At least he did point out that “some of” the protesters were disobeying police orders.

2,000-3,000 anarchists which is about the usual number of protestors for every G20 summit since forever. Not even close to comparable to the 9/12 awakening.

Some of those photographers are idiots. Who would risk injury for an up close shot of a dumpster being run into a police line? That just incites these losers to act out more.
The protesters should try these tactics in Venezuela, Cuba or another Obama ally country and see how that behavior is handled.

Two things stand out to me in this video:
1. Almost immediately at the beginning of the clip, one nut right behind the “reporter” (I use that term loosely) breaks out a gas mask. He must have experience in rioting;
2. I don’t ever remember any town hall attendees using a garbage dumpster as a battering ram.
Hmmmm, I guess we really are civilized compared to the real mob.

Funny, press pass has superpowers.
What about the people either living or working where all the Police noise and chemical agents were let loose on protesters? I saw a professionally dressed woman in skirt and heels on the sidewalk running through the chemical gas clearly affecting her. Hardly right to attack people who belong on the premises coming/going to work, and disturbing residents with the piercing sounds meant to drive people crazy.
