Report: NYC terror attack was set for September 11

posted at 4:45 pm on September 25, 2009 by Allahpundit

I wonder how many trains they were planning to take out.

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press on Thursday that Zazi had associates in New York who were in on the plot. Court papers say that during the summer, Zazi and three unidentified associates bought “unusually large quantities” of hydrogen peroxide and acetone — a flammable solvent found in nail-polish remover — from beauty supply stores in the Denver area, products with names like Ion Sensitive Scalp Developer and Clairoxide.

Zazi searched a Queens home improvement store Web site for another ingredient needed to make a compound called TATP (Triacetone Triperoxide), the explosives used in the London bombings that killed over 50 people, prosecutors said…

Security video and receipts show that some of the purchases were made near a Colorado hotel, according to court papers. On Sept. 6 and 7, Zazi checked into a suite at the hotel with a kitchen and a stove, the papers say, and tried to contact an unidentified associate “seeking to correct mixtures of ingredients to make explosives.”

“Zazi repeatedly emphasized in the communications that he needed the answers right away,” the papers said. “Each communication” was “more urgent than the last.”

CNN has surveillance video from one of the beauty shops showing Zazi stocking up on hydrogen peroxide; you’ll find it below. The Times is now calling this the most serious plot on American soil since 9/11, and understandably so given that it’s the first to allegedly involve training with AQ in the Pakistani hinterlands where the London bombers got their marching orders. Follow the link and you’ll find multiple terrorism experts contrasting the professionalism of this operation with the sort of amateurish freelance stuff, like the Fort Dix Six, that the feds have spent the past eight years busting up.

Here’s something I can’t figure out, though: It seems to be an article of faith on the left, replete with stupidly mocking commentary on Olbermann’s show, natch, that those amateur plots were little more than wannabe jihadi fantasist bravado inflated by the Bush administration to “instill fear” in the public where none was warranted. There’s nothing particularly dangerous, the theory went, about four or five kooks getting their rocks off watching Bin Laden videos and hatching some harebrained scheme to attack a U.S. military base. And yet — change the identity of the suspects from Islamic radicals to American conservatives and have them be watching Glenn Beck instead of Osama and suddenly these same leftist idiots are on red alert for a reprise of Oklahoma City. Why is that? Why is it that the Fort Dix plot, which resulted in criminal convictions, was some sort of eye-rolling Bush propaganda gambit while the hanging of Bill Sparkman, which might not even be a case of murder, is instantly cause for panic? I don’t disagree with the left that the threat of political violence is real; I’ve written before about how creepy and contemptible it is when people bring guns to Obama rallies. After all, it only takes one nut with the element of surprise to kill. How come the left can see that when it comes to conservatives but not when it comes to jihadists? (Or G20 protesters, for that matter.)

Incidentally, while New York appears to be safe-ish for the moment, the same isn’t true everywhere in the west. Something big appears to be in the works in Germany and Bin Laden himself is signing his name to it. Cross your fingers.

Why is it that the Fort Dix plot, which resulted in criminal convictions, was some sort of eye-rolling Bush propaganda gambit while the hanging of Bill Sparkman, which might not even be a case of murder, is instantly cause for panic?

I’m thinking the logic goes as follows: The terrorist plots were complex plans formulated by people who couldn’t pull them off. Thus, “no risk.” The protests have no violent plan; any “political violence” would be a crime of opportunity with modest goals, and thus much more likely to succeed. I think they’re completely different scenarios, so there are lots of things to differentiate them: nature of the “crimes,” competencies of the potential criminals, political convenience of the worriers, etc.

Plus, you know, the fairness doctrine won’t stop terrorists.

There have been so many attempted attacks recently. It is really getting scary. Sooner or later, these guys will probably pull one off.

As for the threat of political violence, I think it is just propaganda. Everytime a Democrat is in the White House we have to hear this stuff about militias and all that.

Think about what the reaction would have been to Waco, if dozens of Americans had been killed like that when Bush {or any Republican} was president. Hysterical.

Terrye on September 25, 2009 at 5:09 PM

This wouldn’t happen if the Feds didn’t let anyone with a heartbeat into the country. We need to chill our borders, not talking fences – I’m talking airports and bridges, spreadsheets and files.

If memory serves me, these terrorists that flew our planes into the trade towers had to learn how to fly a plane. They did this in our own flight schools in Florida. They were enrolled prior to Bush becoming President when the security of this country was not very good. To these terrorist, it doesn’t matter who is President, only that we infidels exist.
Since we haven’t had a successful attack on this country so far is because of the heightened security that the Bush Administration put in-place that now Obama takes credit for.

At least this one was a good catch, apropos tipping off and missing out on the other conspirators.

Makes you wonder what we might still be missing. Cannot possibly be ‘all-knowing’ and catch it all. That’s a tall order.

I’ll speculate that the ‘big’ plots are easier to catch, because of the number of individuals required, and the complexity of the attack plans.

I worry about the small attacks. The ‘lone-gunman’ efforts, that would seem like Israel.
Small attack
small attack
small attack
bigger
bigger
pretty big
Huge.

‘Living with’ a series of small attacks makes us complacent to a looming threat.

By the way, the real boilerplate is “Obama has now officially kept us safe longer than Bush did,” which many leftists chirpily proclaimed a couple of weeks ago, not quite sure whether they were mocking Cheney’s characterization or Bush being cursed with a 9/11 that was mostly planned under Clinton. Because it goes against the Bush Derangement Syndrome meme. The left will deny terror exists until we are hit hard once again. Sadly they will, even then blame President Bush.

The left is insane, dangerously so.

America needs a crash course in the history of Jihad and the goals(World Domination) and Global Sharia law.

Instead, if say Germany gets bombed and AQ claims its only because they have troops in Afghanistan. Idiots(far-left, Ron Paul) will claim it was Germany’s fault for fighting in Afghanistan on “holy land” and if not for that they would have left them alone.

How come the left can see that when it comes to conservatives but not when it comes to jihadists? (Or G20 protesters, for that matter.)

Because they are ignorant, desperate, partison hacks. Reality is not within their grasp of reasoning. And even if it were, they’d ignore all except what supports their agenda. The world is a comic book in which they get to write their script within the bubbles floating above the characters’ heads.

All within the last month or so, all basically the same MO…

Which has saved more lives than the BS the FBI and other Law Enforcement agencies had to go through to get a FISA warrant. NSA intercepts have also negate a few attacks overseas. Moreover, the has not been one instance of any abuses within the Intel and Law Enforcement community because as a result of the Patriot Act.

Chilling. Excellent work by the FBI. Anyone who rolls their eyes at plots like this doesn’t live in the here and now. This could have been disastrous.

Bleeds Blue on September 25, 2009 at 4:49 PM

By adopting Bush’s anti-terrorism practices that he spent all those years condemning.

But I guess it was a nice try.

And yet — change the identity of the suspects from Islamic radicals to American conservatives and have them be watching Glenn Beck instead of Osama and suddenly these same leftist idiots are on red alert for a reprise of Oklahoma City. Why is that?

That’s easy, why don’t people ever listen… I’ve said it a thousand times – To be a liberal, you have to be a fundamentally, intellectually dishonest person. There is no way to say and claim to believe the things they do unless they’re just insanely dishonest… Or retarded, or willingly ignorant. But usually it’s dishonesty.

End of story. I hope you were being rhetorical, because if you haven’t figured out the left yet, we’re in trouble. I mean, have you seen the people on YouTube trying to defend the “Praise Obama” singing kids video? Hell, you posted Norah O’Donnell here at HA.

C. Blame the attack on the racism, unfairness and imperialist policies of previous administration(s), Vow to, from this day forward, be more humble, more contrite and basically prison bitch for the rest of the world.

The ‘sneak and peek’ roving wiretaps that were the hallmark of the PATRIOT act, while used in the terror cases they’re supposed to, present no problem. But the justification for implimenting them was a terrorist threat…not run of the mill drug operations. We were sold something specific…anti-terror legislation. Busting drug dealers via the new PATRIOT ACT rules is in and of itself an abuse.

Bleeds Blue343 on September 25, 2009 at 4:49 PM

Only one flaw in your “logic”. Bush inherited the 2001 attacks, as bin Laden himself said they were supposed to happen on Clinton’s watch.

Just curious-how would you have had Bush prevent those attacks from happening, other tha using tactics you would impeach him for if he had used them?

Thanks for playing!

Del Dolemonte on September 25, 2009 at 5:42 PM

Since it appears that much of this activity was being surveiled even before Bush left office, why all these terrorist arrests right now?

TXUS on September 25, 2009 at 5:15 PM

Possibly because they started buying the ingredients just this summer?

Del Dolemonte on September 25, 2009 at 5:46 PM

If they attack Germany, they might as well have attacked us in my viewpoint. 7/7 was the same thing. 3/11 would have been the same if the Spaniards hadn’t used it as an excuse to wimp out.

Red Cloud on September 25, 2009 at 5:46 PM

Something big appears to be in the works in Germany

Bryan Suits at KFI 640 in LA did a show a few weeks ago about the incident in Kunduz where the Germans (apparently) had a key role in killing a bunch of civilians in Afghanistan. His detailed description of the event and his thoughts on the implications on NATO are very interesting and the show is well worth the listen (IMHO).

Obama better hope our FBI catches all the terror plots in time or he and his wretched presidency are done.

Check out the top of Drudge right now. Four separate terror plots exposed. Are we getting better at detecting them, or are they simply increasing their efforts in order to “flood the zone”???
I hope it’s the former, but I fear it’s the latter.
Pray pray pray!

Maybe off-topic, but there’s also a post on Drudge where Senator Ensign (R-NV) found a provision in the ObamaCare bill which would send people to JAIL for failing to pay fines for not buying health insurance!

Since jails are already overcrowded, where will they put those 15 million scofflaws who willingly don’t buy health insurance? Fort Leavenworth? Gitmo? Auschwitz? the Gulag?

Winston Smith, welcome to Room 101. Big Brother is watching.

This is DOWNRIGHT SCARY!!! Senator Ensign needs to shout this from the rooftops, before they bury him in Yucca Mountain.
