Report: NYC terror attack was set for September 11

posted at 4:45 pm on September 25, 2009 by Allahpundit

I wonder how many trains they were planning to take out.

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press on Thursday that Zazi had associates in New York who were in on the plot. Court papers say that during the summer, Zazi and three unidentified associates bought “unusually large quantities” of hydrogen peroxide and acetone — a flammable solvent found in nail-polish remover — from beauty supply stores in the Denver area, products with names like Ion Sensitive Scalp Developer and Clairoxide.

Zazi searched a Queens home improvement store Web site for another ingredient needed to make a compound called TATP (Triacetone Triperoxide), the explosives used in the London bombings that killed over 50 people, prosecutors said…

Security video and receipts show that some of the purchases were made near a Colorado hotel, according to court papers. On Sept. 6 and 7, Zazi checked into a suite at the hotel with a kitchen and a stove, the papers say, and tried to contact an unidentified associate “seeking to correct mixtures of ingredients to make explosives.”

“Zazi repeatedly emphasized in the communications that he needed the answers right away,” the papers said. “Each communication” was “more urgent than the last.”

CNN has surveillance video from one of the beauty shops showing Zazi stocking up on hydrogen peroxide; you’ll find it below. The Times is now calling this the most serious plot on American soil since 9/11, and understandably so given that it’s the first to allegedly involve training with AQ in the Pakistani hinterlands where the London bombers got their marching orders. Follow the link and you’ll find multiple terrorism experts contrasting the professionalism of this operation with the sort of amateurish freelance stuff, like the Fort Dix Six, that the feds have spent the past eight years busting up.

Here’s something I can’t figure out, though: It seems to be an article of faith on the left, replete with stupidly mocking commentary on Olbermann’s show, natch, that those amateur plots were little more than wannabe jihadi fantasist bravado inflated by the Bush administration to “instill fear” in the public where none was warranted. There’s nothing particularly dangerous, the theory went, about four or five kooks getting their rocks off watching Bin Laden videos and hatching some harebrained scheme to attack a U.S. military base. And yet — change the identity of the suspects from Islamic radicals to American conservatives and have them be watching Glenn Beck instead of Osama and suddenly these same leftist idiots are on red alert for a reprise of Oklahoma City. Why is that? Why is it that the Fort Dix plot, which resulted in criminal convictions, was some sort of eye-rolling Bush propaganda gambit while the hanging of Bill Sparkman, which might not even be a case of murder, is instantly cause for panic? I don’t disagree with the left that the threat of political violence is real; I’ve written before about how creepy and contemptible it is when people bring guns to Obama rallies. After all, it only takes one nut with the element of surprise to kill. How come the left can see that when it comes to conservatives but not when it comes to jihadists? (Or G20 protesters, for that matter.)

Incidentally, while New York appears to be safe-ish for the moment, the same isn’t true everywhere in the west. Something big appears to be in the works in Germany and Bin Laden himself is signing his name to it. Cross your fingers.

Olbermann’s a treacherous little rat who deservesto be hanged, drawn and quartered.

The FBI did an excellent job in dismantling this cell. They weren’t impeded by notorious red tape like in the 90s because of the Bush administrations fixes to FISA (which Obama has ostensibly kept incidentally).

Well, Obama has now officially kept us safe longer than Bush did.

Are you intellectually dishonest or just an idiot?

What’s keeping us safe so far are the policies put in place by Bush and simply maintained by Obama. What got us 9/11 was Clinton.

DarkCurrent on September 25, 2009 at 5:56 PM

If I was in charge of an investigation into a terror plot, I’d definitely move before the investigation was squashed by some Democrat appointee at Justice.

hawksruleva on September 25, 2009 at 4:56 PM

Two problems with moving too fast: (1) you may not have enough evidence for a conviction, and (2) you lose the opportunity to nab others involved in the plot and especially the ringleaders who might provide intelligence about other cells.

ProfessorMiao on September 25, 2009 at 5:57 PM

We seem to be getting too much intelligence on these guys. Time to bring Jamie Gorelick and Janet back for a review on the evils of of sharing information.

BDS, plain and simple, unchallenged by the media for 8 years.

The ’sneak and peek’ roving wiretaps that were the hallmark of the PATRIOT act, while used in the terror cases they’re supposed to, present no problem. But the justification for implimenting them was a terrorist threat…not run of the mill drug operations. We were sold something specific…anti-terror legislation. Busting drug dealers via the new PATRIOT ACT rules is in and of itself an abuse.

ernesto on September 25, 2009 at 5:42 PM

And? Cartels fund terrorist operations, it’ as simple as that. Look at the FARC and the Taliban in Afghanistan. Counter narcotic operations are well withing the parameters of the Patriot Act.

Cr4sh Dummy on September 25, 2009 at 6:06 PM

No, its not that simple, but its obvious that its your prime consideration, so i wont bother. We were sold anti-terror legislation, not anti-narcotics legislation. I could understand if SOME of the sneak and peeks were drug related, while most were terror related…but MOST were drug related. Thats an abuse.

ernesto on September 25, 2009 at 6:10 PM

If you are a Darwinist, then if the New York City folks endorse candidates that want to be “nice” to those that are trying to kill them, then it is just “survival of the fittist”.

Since I am not, I pray that the idiots in NYC will wake up and vote people in who will protect them.

I’d like every one of of their heads on a pike in Times Square.

Bombs of this design are not “Weapons of Mass Destruction“.

Let’s keep definitions cogent, MSM.

They are mass-murdering devices.

WMD’s are a little more serious.

Dirty bombs, chemical weapons, bacteriological attacks, nukes, etc.

This conflates any bomb with The Bomb.

And trivializes the latter, in effect.

ernesto on September 25, 2009 at 6:10 PM

If the Cartels have links to terrorist groups, like the FARC then it’s not an abuse.

Besides, it doesn’t matter what we were “sold.” Illicit drugs are all to present in this country. It’s would be a crime not to use the tools authorized by the Patriot Act in counter narcotic operations.

DarkCurrent on September 25, 2009 at 5:56 PM

Slam dunk: Intellectual dishonesty.

Political posturing trumps everything else for your your average far-left Donk.

It’s much easier on the brain that way. No need for a periodic review of the ol’ belief system that might have to accommodate things like new facts or changed situations or environments. (Cognitive dissonance is such a bitch!)

Added bonus: When your Intellectually Dishonest you still get to be, well, “intellectual”.

(Works on all the lefty chicks down at the wine bar.)

And you really think it was potential terrorist links that brought the PATRIOT act provisions down on those individuals? Cmon…

As for drugs in general, they ARE quite present in this country. Something prohibition, no matter how stringent, will not change.

ernesto on September 25, 2009 at 6:36 PM

Yes I do, take a garner at the FARC’s links known narcotics traffickers. Those traffickers have links to other cartels who “sell” their “product” stateside. Or how about the the Taliban? Over 60% of their funding comes from opium cultivation and trade.

I’m not advocating prohibition. In fact, I’m for legalizing marijuana (as long as it’s completely regulated thoroughly by the govt). But the US govt can not just stand aside and let these people get away with illicit trafficking.

Because long before now the Left decided that they have only one enemy for all occasions: conservatives. Terrorists of foreign extraction buying large quantities of bomb-making materials for use right here in the USA don’t even show up on their radar.

Really, if space aliens were to teleport all conservatives off the planet overnight, the Left wouldn’t know what to do. They’ve invested so much of themselves into being anti-whatever-conservatives-are-for that they’d be at a total loss.

Spurius Ligustinus on September 25, 2009 at 6:55 PM

Because the have the same goal: the destruction of the West? where they disagree on is what to replace it with, but they all wish to replace it with something other than what it is currently.

I R A Darth Aggie on September 25, 2009 at 7:18 PM

Allah,

The answer to your question lies in the tribal psychology of human beings. Lefties want their tribe to have power and hate and struggle against other tribes whom they perceive to have it in order to take it away. They don’t perceive Jihadis as being powerful and so don’t hate them.
I say the following as a Red Sox fan. Red Sox fans hate disparage and try to delegitimize the Yankees (“It’s all about the money with the Yankees”, etc.) because they are struggling for the same pennant, the competition is close, and there is constant engagement and a lot of history which sharpens the appetite for conflict. The fact that the Yankees often take the prize is enraging. Red Sox fans don’t hate, say, the hapless Cubs with the same intensity because they don’t spend much time thinking about them. What would be the point in hating the Cubs?
A visitor from Mars would observe that New York and Boston sports fans culturally have much in common, objectively, so rationally they should get along, but they don’t. Lefties see the Right the way Red Sox fans see the Yankees. Lefties see jihadis the way Red Sox fans see a dangerous drunken guy beating up some guy at the dance clubs across the street from Fenway Park. Objectively, he might be more contemptible and dangerous than any of the Yankees fans in Fenway, but who cares? It’s not like he’s going to take the pennant away from your team or anything.

O’bama won 70% of the high school dropout vote. No other candidate had ever done that.

AP: you need to clarify your “cross your fingers” comment. I know what you meant–”let’s hope that no attacks are made against the people of Germany or anywhere else”–but if something tragic were to happen, your writings above will be taken by the left to portray you as in favor of terrorist attacks there.

johnny alpha on September 25, 2009 at 10:12 PM

My question is, are they smart enough to realize these bombing plots are not going to go anywhere, or will they suddenly have an epiphany and learn to carry out terrorist attacks that don’t send up red flags to alarm LE?

Hopefully, they will keep doing what they’re doing, expose themselves, and get caught.

When they realize that they’re no longer operating in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Indonesia and the like, far from their suppliers and smugglers of components, then we’re in trouble.

Dr. ZhivBlago on September 26, 2009 at 8:36 AM

What more is needed to convince the public that there is a group of people who do not wish them well, and have only one goal. Annihilation, of U.S. and those who support our way of life, so the world will be at peace, living in the 7th century where the rules were simple – whatever the zealots says goes and suppressing the actions of all who are not towing the line as they determine it to be.

If having hydrogen peroxide became a crime only criminals will have hydrogen peroxide.
