Oh my: McCain to host fundraiser for … Romney

posted at 8:27 pm on September 25, 2009 by Allahpundit

There’s nothing necessarily unseemly about this — it’s an event for Mitt’s PAC, not for his campaign — but the grassroots remembers well Maverick’s conspicuous omission of a certain someone when naming exciting young Republicans on Leno’s show.

Smells like … betrayal.

Sen. John McCain is co-hosting a fundraiser for his former 2008 Republican primary rival Mitt Romney next Wednesday in Phoenix…

The fundraiser will benefit Romney’s Free and Strong America PAC, and features a $3,000 per person VIP reception along with a $300 per person luncheon.

The politic thing to do would have been to hold off on fundraisers for anyone else until he’s done one for Sarah PAC. Although that, of course, presumes that Sarah PAC wants him for a fundraiser, which it may not. Given the base’s contempt for McCain and the ‘Cuda’s emerging positioning as a libertarian populist in 2012, the Maverick brand may be something she’s trying to edge away from. The question is, what’s Mitt thinking here? Every time PPP does one of its Obama vs. X polls, Romney unfailingly lags behind Palin and Huckabee among Republicans. Hooking up with McCain will do nothing to change that and may well exacerbate it. I guess he’s committed to being the centrist next time out. Exit question: Where does that leave Huck? Social-con heaven?

It doesn’t seem like betrayal at all. Romney stumped for McCain after losing the nomination. It was very gracious of him, and it’s nice to see these two make up. They seemed to genuinely like one another better toward the end of the race. As for Sarah Palin, she doesn’t need anything from John McCain ever again. Being his VP and dragging him across the finish line on November 4, 2008 was quite enough. Remember, it was McCain who couldn’t get 500 supporters in Arizona.

With zero trying to rham this health care debacle down our throat I don’t think Romney has a chance. He implemented the same sort of plan in Massachutes and I don’t think we the people will want to fight off another health care debacle if we win this fight. I just don’t see it happening. What’s to say Romney won’t try the same thing. If he’s against it now that will sink him all together.

First off, AP, has never been a big Mitt fan as shown over the years with his posts. Second, I am as conservative as one can get and from Arizona, I did not vote for McCain and was ticked off that Huckster and McCain took him out with their tag-team in the primaries, to keep many of us that wanted to vote for the only candidate that had a clue on how to run a business, out of the White House. Mitt is the best candidate still for 2012 ESPECIALLY after what we’ve been experiencing and will continue with this economically clueless president.
from a die-hard, red state, gun lovin’, western votin’, SUV ownin’ conservative! Mitt 2012!

One thing Palin will have to learn pronto is to not mistake the unquestioning adoration she receives from a few smitten fans (on HA, for example) for massive support.

If she wants to be President, it’s a job she will have to earn. I don’t think even the lackeys of Osama Obama will fall for an unprepared, unqualified candidate twice.

MrScribbler on September 25, 2009 at 9:00 PM

Regarding unfavorables there are three factors:

1)Timing (this is Sept 2009);if it was Sept 2011 it would be a different story. Perceptions change; Sarah has 2 years to change them.

2)The source of the info (PPP–a pollster with Democratic ties)and the credibility of the info must be called into question and suspected of bias

3)The impact it has on the 2010 midterms:

I have maintained for several months that Palin’s political future will be determined by her performance during the midterms and if she is able to orchestrate a huge GOP landslide victory. Whether her poll numbers are good or poor next fall during the midterms it won’t matter if she doesn’t perform.

if there’s not a clearly-defined alternative.

Doesn’t need to be. In 1992, the economy was still in the crapper, and this guy named Bill Clinton was an iffy character at best, especially with the Jennifer Flowers scandal. But the public mood was that somebody new was needed. So they gave Bill a try. “It’s the economy, stupid.”

Bad economies never re-elect presidents, with one exception, FDR in ’36. But in the modern age, people have no patience for high unemployment or other negative economics. They always blame the sitting party and will vote for Pee Wee Herman as an alternative.

Romney had one of the best, most conservative messages of the primaries last year – second only to Thompson. His problem was that he had not walked the walk as governor, and had shifted positions many times.

I said at the time that if he took the four years between 2008 and 2012 to prove his bona fides with conservative deeds, he would probably be my favorite candidate for 2012. I still think so. All he has to do is champion some conservative causes and he’s my favorite (unless DeMint runs).

Romney’s biggest problem is that his supporters are so obnoxious.

Some of you either don’t remember or never knew about how Ronald Reagan beat Jimmy Carter:
All a great deal of us knew was that he WAS NOT Jimmy Carter and he talked about a free, strong and proud America unlike JIMMY.

Whoever the GOP candidate is–even if it’s Homer Simpson-will win in a walk if they can do the same as Reagan.
The GOP winner in 2012 will be the Un-Obama.
All they’ll need to do will be to run against Obama which, to date, neither Mittens nor McVain has done much of.

Mitt PAC and McCain PAC will get zero of my dollars!

“Mitt is a progressive….look at his record and his state.”

njpat, he had to run MA with a heavily democratic congress! Let’s compare Mitt accomplishing conservative ideas in that environment to say Huckabee. Mitt is conservative at his core and he will show it over and over throughout the upcoming campaign. Many things in his healthcare bill were added later by the MA house/senate.

g2825m on September 25, 2009 at 9:14 PM

They are all progressives in Mass….and if he did such a good job, he should have been able to carry his party, don’t ya think? Romneycare is the precursor to Obamacare. If they run Romney, I’m going back to being an independent.

njpat on September 25, 2009 at 9:19 PM

If McCain is supporting Romney, that means less people will want Romney.

HornetSting on September 25, 2009 at 9:19 PM

Question: What does Romney bring to the table? I just don’t see any value it Romney.

I could go on and on about Palin, but two loser rino’s don’t make a right conservative. The talk about Palin’s negatives have always fell flat with any actual logic. I just don’t see it.

Kini on September 25, 2009 at 9:20 PM

McCain is just being McCain.

Wait until the Amnesty debate starts and he joins forces with Our American Jesus…..a RINO celebration to make Olympia Snowe proud.

As for Mitt he’s the next in line for the D.C. establishment RINO’s and Globalists (those that play the you scratch my back I’ll scratch yours). This makes perfect sense.

As for Palin she’s been so Alinskyed up it will be a miracle if she gets elected. Wait until Mitt starts having his minions REALLLLLY start slinging mud on Huckabee and Palin. Right now Palin has given NO INDICATION she’s interested in 2012. If Mitt can’t control himself he’ll have to go after Huckabee.

Huckabee and Romney and Pawlenty as the three choices for the GOP in 2012 (if America survives until then) and one of them going against Jesus.

We’re toast people.

Ha, me too, but now I’m adding my own lyrics that can’t be printed here and it’s a lot more fun to sing.

Bishop on September 25, 2009 at 9:22 PM

McCain’s jealous that his choice for VP outshined him by about a million candelas. No story here.

Red Cloud on September 25, 2009 at 9:22 PM

Which one looks more presidential to you?

KickandSwimMom on September 25, 2009 at 9:13 PM

Hard to tell right now since Palin gets a lot of press coverage and Romney doesn’t.

I know DeMint has set up a PAC for conservatives, and I know Palin is making some good conservative arguments in opposition to the democrat agenda. I don’t know what Romney’s doing.

I think Romney is smart enough to know that he needs the party base and the party machine. Maybe he’s working the machine end first.

Former Governor Mitt Romney today issued the following statement on Senator Kennedy:

“The loss of Senator Ted Kennedy is a sad event for America, and especially for Massachusetts. The last son of Rose Fitzgerald and Joseph Kennedy was granted a much longer life than his brothers, and he filled those years with endeavor and achievement that would have made them proud.

In 1994, I joined the long list of those who ran against Ted and came up short. But he was the kind of man you could like even if he was your adversary. I came to admire Ted enormously for his charm and sense of humor – qualities all the more impressive in a man who had known so much loss and sorrow. I will always remember his great personal kindness, and the fighting spirit he brought to every cause he served and every challenge he faced. I was proud to know Ted Kennedy as a friend, and today my family and I mourn the passing of this big-hearted, unforgettable man.”

I like Sarah a lot as well and was happy she boosted McCain’s campaign but I do not think she will be ready nor do I think she is angling towards the presidency anymore (my opinion obviously) I hope that she doesn’t pull a ’92 Perot and split our ticket as a Libertarian or such and hand The One another four years!! The conservatives need to banter for our guys/gals but when it comes down to it we need to ALL support either Mitt/Palin/Jindal/Demint etc to keep the current resident from really implementing his socialistic goals.
Well, good nite for me from Baghdad!! By the way send more troops to our guys on the other side of Iran! We love to win, not give up and go home!!

I will never forgive McCain for deliberately losing the election.
He threw away every chance (especially the ones Sarah gave him) to go after NObama on the issues and on Ogabe’s associations with ACORN, terrorists and Black Liberation Theology preachers like Rev. Wright because McCain said it was “racist.”
BTW, you can draw a straight line from Momar Qaddafi to Rev. Wright to Louis Farrakhan to Ogabe.

As for Mitt, I think it’s his followers that are cultists, not Palin’s!
Whether it’s his record as governor or his flip-flopping on the issues, he’s never appealed to me.
We’re supposed to get behind him because he’s “well spoken,” conventionally nice looking and a business success (never mind that he inherited millions or that he made most of his money doing deals with other rich Mormons).
