Oh my: McCain to host fundraiser for … Romney

posted at 8:27 pm on September 25, 2009 by Allahpundit

There’s nothing necessarily unseemly about this — it’s an event for Mitt’s PAC, not for his campaign — but the grassroots remembers well Maverick’s conspicuous omission of a certain someone when naming exciting young Republicans on Leno’s show.

Smells like … betrayal.

Sen. John McCain is co-hosting a fundraiser for his former 2008 Republican primary rival Mitt Romney next Wednesday in Phoenix…

The fundraiser will benefit Romney’s Free and Strong America PAC, and features a $3,000 per person VIP reception along with a $300 per person luncheon.

The politic thing to do would have been to hold off on fundraisers for anyone else until he’s done one for Sarah PAC. Although that, of course, presumes that Sarah PAC wants him for a fundraiser, which it may not. Given the base’s contempt for McCain and the ‘Cuda’s emerging positioning as a libertarian populist in 2012, the Maverick brand may be something she’s trying to edge away from. The question is, what’s Mitt thinking here? Every time PPP does one of its Obama vs. X polls, Romney unfailingly lags behind Palin and Huckabee among Republicans. Hooking up with McCain will do nothing to change that and may well exacerbate it. I guess he’s committed to being the centrist next time out. Exit question: Where does that leave Huck? Social-con heaven?

Palin is relying on small contributors; Romney is relying on the likes of McCain and other assorted grandees. Could shape up to be the Republican version of Obama vs Clinton.

Love this!

First of all, McCain had better worry about raising $ for his own PAC–his re-election to the Senate is hardly a done deal.
Secondly, has Mitt’s personal fortune given out or what?
And he’s raising money to do what, exactly?
Both men are multi-millionaires and their populist appeal is not all that.
I wish them both luck.
I doubt Sarah Palin will care, much less notice.

If only the Republicans had been smart and gone with Romney instead of McCain, none of this would be happening. When the economy tanked last September, both McCain and Obama were like deer in headlights because neither of them had any economic experience. There sat Romney, all off to the side, wondering why he wasn’t chosen for such an obvious task at an obvious time.

Oh well, looks like the Republicans are set to repeat their mistake in 2012 with Sarah Palin. Look, she’s a great personality and has the charisma, but she’s not fit for the job of the presidency. Neither is Obama, which we’ve already found out these past few months.

So McCain holds a fundraiser for Romney and so he does not likes Palin any longer. Perhaps.

AP, you won’t believe this but I agree with you; Romney is down with Republicans; why is he currying favor with McCain who currently is not held in high regard by many Republicans, especially conservatives. Perhaps to “put his stamp” on McCain’s people and edge his way back up the ladder. But again it doesn’t help Romney with conservatives.

Plus she has a very impressive track record in office.

I don’t give a damn about what the state-owned media declares her “unfavorables” to be, just like Ogabe doesn’t seem to care about his unfavorables as President.
Comrade Urkel still thinks he has a “chance” to pass health care.

He can’t possibly win re-election. The economy will be as bad as it is now, or worse. Maybe a lot worse. By 2012, obama fatigue will have set in as well. No US president gets re-elected with the economy in the dumpster, especially in the dumpster for his entire term. Unemployment above 8% is political death for any president. It is now 10% and expected to remain there for years.

As you know, there is a pretty healthy disagreement on this blog about whether Romney or Palin would be a better candidate in 2012. I see no reason to create tension by the appearance of a wedge (a la McCain raising money for Romney but not Palin). I don’t believe this is any kind of issue at all since Palin donated to McCain recently and I’m sure he’ll return the favor to her if and when she needs it. so I guess, johnnybgood, I don’t want to play this speculative thread game tonight.

Maverick’s conspicuous omission of a certain someone when naming exciting young Republicans on Leno’s show.

I think it’s time we go beyond the “McCain / Palin” matchup.

They never really were very well matched in any area except National Defense.

Mitt’s courting of McCain solidifies his place in the ranks of the GOP Ayatollah’s. This really is the kiss of death for Mitt – because the Ayatollahs aren’t going to be controlling the ticket in 2012.

The GOP will be owned – and rightfully so – by the LIBERTY MOVEMENT … the Tea Party Folks. Let me see – who do they like more? McCain or Palin?

Not saying that Palin will be the nominee. She could be the VP – or she could just sit it out and campaign for the GOP nominee. But the GOP nominee WILL BE a grassroots guy or gal – someone NOT in the upper Ayatollah ranks. Someone who’s not the “next white guy in line”. Romney is the “next white guy in line” – that ensures he won’t be standing in it come 2012.

If the Ayatollah’s want to have relevance – they need to seek out the grassroots “heavies” like Palin. I doubt they are smart enough to realize this though.
