PPP poll: Palin’s favorability at 37/55
posted at 9:07 pm on September 24, 2009 by Allahpundit
Head-to-head with Obama, she’s steady from last month: He led her 52/38 in August and leads 53/38 now. But her favorables are in the toilet, dropping from 47/45 in July to 40/49 in August to … 37/55. The positive spin for Palin fans, I guess, is that the less the public sees of her, the worse she seems to do, which turns the conventional media wisdom on its head. Now that she’s reemerged to hit the lecture circuit, it’ll be interesting to see if she spikes up in October.
Another ominous trend: Her favorability among Republicans was higher last month than Huckabee’s even though he fared better against Obama overall (this month he trails by seven points after trailing in August by just three), but now he’s nudged past her even within the party.

He beats her among Republicans even in a hypothetical contest against Obama, winning 77 percent and losing just 13 while Palin tops out at 70 percent and loses 18. Even when you break it out by ideology, expecting the ‘Cuda to win big among conservatives, it’s a statistical wash:

Exit question: Where’s all the GOP Huck love coming from? Does he have that many fans of his Fox show? Or is he just drawing good vibes as the funny, genial southern guy, in contrast to the more polarizing personas of Palin and Romney?

Wasn’t there a poll(if not several polls) giving Dukakis a similar lead over Bush 41 in the summer of 1988? And that was only a few months before the actual election. Things change, people.
Look, there’s no doubt Palin’s image has been tarnished by the media and the Dems(I know, I’m being redundant). And McCain’s own staffers going after her hasn’t helped matters.
But what is it that most people who disapprove of her contend? That she’s inexperienced and/or dumb. Well, we all know she’s not dumb. Even if she’s being fed the words she’s saying in her speeches and on Facebook, she seems to have a keen understanding of what she’s articulating. And as for the lack of experience, that’s gonna be the hurdle she’ll have to clear with most Americans(even those of us who like her) in a national campaign. Is she ready for the job of President? And believe me, coming on the heels of arguably the least experienced person to ever sit in the Oval Office, that’s gonna suddenly be a very relevant issue in the next election.

Indepedents on Huckabee, Aug to Sep, according to PPP Polls (Favs/UnFavs/DKs):
Aug 48/24/27, Sep 32/38/30. A drop in net approvals with Indies of 30 points in one month!
That is ridiculous!

I think Sarah will be just fine. The people at this website are overthinking this.
People like a fighter, an underdog, and a comeback kid. That’s what Clinton gets, btw. He sees a lot of himself in Sarah-a great retail campaigner. Palin is doing what she needs to do right now for a national effort to roll herself out.

Can’t figure that one out, Allah. Thing with Sarah is, she can be at the other end of the planet and look what happens. Huck’s a nice gentleman, Romney I can’t figure him out (????) but to me with Sarah we don’t have that “men” competition that wanna elbow her aside (including running mate recently), what you see is what you get, amongst other amazing great American, patriotic, folksy manner that people get.
Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney can contribute in many ways to the country once another POTUS is elected-or they can be VP’s – esp. Huckabee. Tho I have to tell you he raised taxes in AR as governor, so there’s a lot of bad blood there. Arkansas is all about the Clintons. I got family there and a good way to know how the guy fares in his home state as POTUS is thru a poll. My family? Can’t stand him.

Nothing like controversy to whip up interest….Palin will bring out the voters, one way or the other.
It is never boring with her around, and the elites, and the faux intellectuals, just can’t handle her.
It is comical reading all these “brilliant” pundits, and their confusion over Palin’s popularity.
Here it is, simple as it is….She connects…
right2bright on September 25, 2009 at 8:51 AM
Numbers are what they are, no more, no less. Present timing leaves them a matter for trivial pursuit.
So Palin’s been taking her research sabbatical, and made an intelligently informative speech to global financiers sponsored by a French interest that received from the NYTimes a positive review.
“Authenticity” (hollow shell manufactured gift wrap attracting nitwits without a brain) rules over policy.–AnninCA
Morons don’t even know the meaning of “authentic”, their favorite word to rape in thought, having first repudiated logic. By choice, revisionist corruption is both ignorant and stupid.
maverick muse on September 25, 2009 at 8:52 AM
Obama has shown, substance is not what is important in winning elections, it never has been.
If you connect with the voters, they will make give you “substance”.
The “elites” created Obama, and attacked Palin…yet Palin has much more experience and greater background then Obama.
Mitt Romney has some great experience…but he doesn’t connect with the voters, so they disregard his experience and substitute it with all the failings that everyone who makes a lot of decisions has in the past.
right2bright on September 25, 2009 at 8:55 AM
Like I’ve always said: If she wasn’t a legitimate threat to the Beltway Elitist Political Status Quo, she would not be the center of attention. Like everyone else has said, she connects with Average Americans. And that scares the Politicians and the State-Run Media to no end.

Obooba is a dry, humorless, condescending liberal who’s trying to muck up the country, so the more he’s seen the less he’s liked. For him, less is more.
‘Cuda’s a breath of fresh air, which you can’t enjoy unless the window’s open. So for her, the more the better.
Akzed on September 25, 2009 at 8:58 AM
Again, Palin would be a good candidate, but she has been savaged by the media. The moderates that are needed to win against Obama don’t have any respect for her. It is already a challenge to run against Obama, putting someone up whose already in the red doesn’t make much sense. We need a fresh face for 2012. Let Palin whip up the base and drive them towards this new candidate.

Palin polarizing? Compared to our sitting President she’s a unifier. Palin is only “polarizing” because the propaganda media brands her as polarizing. What has she done to be polarizing?
1) Refuses to abort her down-sydrome child and stands for LIFE. Oh I guess anyone who does that should be disqualified as polarizing.
2) Expresses faith in God
3) Criticizes redistribution of wealth and Obamacare
4) Believes in “American Exceptionalism” and individual liberty.
5) Fights corruption in government
6) Stands up for the people of Alaska
7) Has common sense – Oil and natural gas are our current energy sources – let’s use them!
8) Won’t be silenced by frivolous lawsuits or Obama media slander.
9) Refuses to apologize for America.
Yeah I guess that’s all so polarizing. If it weren’t for the State Run Media, Sarah would be a uniter not a polarizer.

That’s pretty much it. Anyone who truly believes Palin is “polarizing” has spent too much time listening to pundits and reading pseudo-journalists.
The real polarizer is Obama. Just based on the racial animosity this man has stirred up he should qualify for the most divisive president in our history. He and his cronies have gone out of their way to falsely accuse the right of racial hatred and have done their best to turn the black community against everyone who doesn’t agree with the Neo-Communist.

“Polarizing” as a descriptor is so 2007. Anyone who could not see through it or realize it was pushed to the benefit of Barack “Present” Obama is stupid. Everyone in a leadership position must make decisions, and in politics, you’re either with someone or against them.
Hillary Clinton was called “polarizing”, because people supposedly hated her. Where Obama was unknown and therefore preferable. Sarah Palin is supposed to be “polarizing”, because she is a social conservative *and* a Republican. It is impossible to say we know any more about Sarah Palin, who was introduced quickly and unexpectedly on the national stage, while Obama had been feted and primed since the 2004 Democratic National Convention. This is a blatant attempt by Obama’s media enablers to define his opposition before they get a chance to introduce themselves to the public. In Palin’s case, she had both hands tied behind her back by the McCain campaign, while Hillary had to deal with strange primary rules. Obama really does have a glass jaw, and it’s really the media any Republican is running against in 2012.
At least Sarah Palin called them out, issued a direct challenge on the night of the Republican convention and has found a way to circumvent the media and even punish them (CLSA speech in Hong Kong, traditionally closed to press, and Facebook come to mind). I doubt any Republican can match her thunder.
But I remember the constant droning of the media when Hillary ran in the primary against Obama. She was routinely called “disingenuous, ” “divisive,” “untruthful, ” “dishonest,” “polarizing, ” “calculating, ” “saying whatever it takes to win,” “attempting to deceive the American people,” “one of the most secretive in America,” “deliberately misleading,” “literally willing to do anything to win” and “playing politics with war”, “deeply flawed” and she has “character issues.” Say what you will about Hillary, but Obama went through his surrogates and promoted themes with his media strategists that attacked on a very personal level, while any personal attacks against him, legitimate questions as to his judgment based on his associates, were called “racist”.
Sarah Palin will have to play on this uneven field, if she challenges Obama in 2012. The media is already prepared for this; remember Kathleen Parker, Joan Walsh and Chris Matthews accusing Palin of using racist dog whistles and speaking to the Confederacy! Matthews went on to snark that Palin would start touring the midwest and talking to alleged racists in the Midwest, even though when other candidates do this, it’s called stumping. It will get ugly.
alliebobbitt on September 25, 2009 at 9:51 AM
The old media has been in a death spiral for at least a decade. However, Palin hasn’t fared well with the current fragmented media either. If she runs in 2012 she’ll need to contend with a media that will act in much the same way it is acting now.

If she wants to prove that is ready for prime time, then she needs to conduct a hard hitting interview in the future. Facebook and speeches are small mediums to define yourself on policy positions. Given Obama’s woeful performance on all counts to date, it is painfully obvious that Palin has better sense than Obama on everything in question.
It isn’t as if Obama’s media cheerleaders know anything themselves beyond how to read the teleprompter fed by Soros and Murdoch, and to interrupt and shout over any conservative being “interviewed”.
“Prime time” ain’t what it used to be. Review more of this week’s headlines. Over 20% of Americans no longer get news from the television or paper press, and 80% of Americans trust the MSM as much as they do Congress.
Palin’s doing just fine, not only on her own, but for America, just being herself. She’s giving the MSM as much of her attention as they deserve.

Another Palin is dead announcement
Her rubber chicken speech to executives resounds with the public as much as Bill Clinton’s, i.e. not at all
She will connect with the public when she either runs ads, or gets national PR to the public, not before. That PR will not be an announcement she is giving a speech somewhere. Ditto for Romney
Meanwhile the press is total hands off Huck and overtime on the Palin image, telling me Palin is the one they fear. They are trying to use Huck like the last election, as a holding corral for the evangelicals. Vote splitting, the useful strategy
The GOP is pretending they don’t know this is going on in hopes she will die off. They fear talking against her lest they drive folk to her. They ought to pay the press for the help
Payback isn’t pretty. If you want someone dead. be sure they have flat lined before you hand out cigars

Given, stupid is as stupid does. And there will ever be ignorant people, stupidly holding to stubborn pride.
What the public makes of substance via packaging of course influences the vote. I do not argue that charisma attracts votes.
However, I do not agree that substance has never been what is important in winning elections.
I would also submit that the resulting impact of Obama will be that the public will demand substance of the next candidate.
People are impatient creatures, and Americans are the most impatient. The public was already embittered towards Congress, and that majority distrust is already directed towards Obama’s administration.
Obama is not only exhausting America’s economy, patience and civility, but the public’s willingness to be so gullible. In short, Obama marketed “hope” that proves disillusionment, hence anger towards Obama the fraud. Even though he’s squirreled away the STIMULUS to buy his next election, the fact that taxes increase and the economy tanks overwhelms whatever froth he’ll spill into a dismal economic tsunami Depression.

Never.
From every politician, I require proof in both words and deeds. And I always reserve the right to question, doubt, investigate, and criticize, as well as honor, admire and praise.
For example, have I mentioned anything I admire about Barry yet? No? Let me think about that for a while. There has to be something.
Oh! Oh! I know! I very much admire the beauty of Barry’s backside whenever I see him going away. There. I did it.

She scares them to death. The really sad part is that if they really wanted her to go away, the would avoid giving her any attention. Unfortunately, Alinsky’s Rules dictate that they must “freeze her” and “ridicule her”. They are so weak minded that they couldn’t help themselves anyway.

Finally something Dave and i can talk about.
heshtesh on September 25, 2009 at 12:40 PM
How come none of you are going after her for having the speech behind closed doors?
Dave Rywall on September 25, 2009 at 11:27 AM
Last I checked, she was a PRIVATE citizen. Funny how she can post a teensy weensy article on Facebook (of all places) and COMPLETELY overshadow Obama’s speech on health care with every media orofice open to his lying yarn.

Uh, it didn’t overshadow anything, moron.
Dave Rywall on September 25, 2009 at 12:42 PM
You didn’t undershadow it either.
Don’t you know how to put on make up? You know being a drama queen and all.

Congradulations Dave once again you display your level of ignorance. If you lack the level of intelligence to comment on this site, why do you put yourself in the position of revealing your lack of intelligence?

PPP is strickly paid by Democrats and their orgs, and has never been accurate in election results except where the Democratic was sure to win.
It is hard to believe that at a time where Palin is putting out highly reasoned and well sourced articles on healthcare and energy that somehow her favs are going down especially among independants. She has even got good press compared to past periods.
LeeSeneca on September 25, 2009 at 12:51 PM
Do you reckon Norah O’Donnell would approve of a Sarah Palin indoctrination song in school, too?
jimmy2shoes on September 25, 2009 at 12:57 PM
It’s interesting to go poking around the pages of the PPP pdf file referenced above.
+/- 3.9% margin of error plus weighting which is NOT described.
While Palin’s unfavorables are higher than Huckabee or Romney her favorables are within one point of Huckabee’s regardless of R/D/I affiliation and are 19 points higher than Romney’s within R’s.
Cross tabs for Huckabee Dem/Rep/Ind
Fav. D13%, R 70%, I 32%
Cross tabs for Palin Dem/Rep/Ind
Fav. D 12%, R 69%, I 33%
Cross tabs for Romney Dem/Rep/Ind
Fav. D 15%, R 50%, I 38%
When you get to actual “Obama vs ____” numbers they are also relatively close with Palin and Romney within MOE of each other with R’s, and all three well within MOE with D’s and I’s.
Obama/Huckabee D/R/I
Huck D 15%, R 77%, I 33%
Obama/Palin D/R/I
Palin D 13%, R 70%, I 35%
Obama/Romney D/R/I
Romney D 14%, R 72%, I 35%
Interesting results considering the high MOE and the fact that the PPP’s ‘weighting’ is unknown.

I agree that she does need to get out and do interviews but not necessarily THIS moment. Remember that she’s not just a hunter, but a marathon runner as well. I think she’s writing her book, studying up, gathering trustworthy advisors and, in general, pacing herself.
Heaven knows the release of FB entries, op-eds and speeches have been perfectly timed to create the greatest amount of consternation to Obama and his extremist agenda.
Whether or not she ever runs for President, at the moment she is doing serious damage to the opposition And this is a Very Good Thing.

The woman can’t speak a coherent sentence. She’s fickle and petty in temperment.
Reagan Republican on September 25, 2009 at 2:08 PM
So despite the fact that Hotair swoons for Palin, nobody wants to hear her big speech.
Dave Rywall on September 25, 2009 at 2:10 PM
Nice.
Sarah Palin does something that earns praise and gets people talking: AP says, “I suppose I have to post this.”
A poll comes out that’s negative about Palin: “Hey, look at this!”
Is that really just my perception?
tom on September 25, 2009 at 2:13 PM
She reminds me of Reagan a lot in his earlier days.
TimeTraveler on September 25, 2009 at 2:16 PM
Ugh.
I here all this crap about Romney here.
Palin’s #s mean nothing now.
Polls do not make the man or woman.
I wanna see Sarah out there all by herself, without McCain.
I like Romney, but some of his stuff I could do without.
He knows business & $$ & he’s a genuinely nice guy.
But being LDS will be his downfall.
There’s too many people in this nation who look at us with a doubtfull eye.
I’ve lived all over the lower 48 throughout my life & I have seen it.
And when I converted, I saw how differently people treated me in some areas of the country.
The religous prejudice I think will be too much for Romney to overcome.
And I think it’s a shame bcs I think he’d be a good leader-he already is one.
Badger40 on September 25, 2009 at 2:22 PM
Me too.
And remember how much fun people made of him?
Badger40 on September 25, 2009 at 2:23 PM
What these and other polls continually tell us is Sarah Palin isn’t Ronald Reagan, she’s Nancy Reagan.
Now, how about the Republicans running a candidate in 2012, who can actually defeat The Obamination?
How ‘s that for a novel concept, Palin Groupies?
Mister Ghost on September 25, 2009 at 2:37 PM
Really, so when did you spend any time with her?
upinak on September 25, 2009 at 2:50 PM
Huckabee sucks and if Republicans nominate him as a panacea I will never vote for another Republican again.
Sultry Beauty on September 25, 2009 at 2:51 PM
