Will the US join Canada in A’jad walkout?; Update: Video of Harper’s clear, uncompromising language

posted at 10:12 am on September 23, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Our friends to the North have heard enough from Iranian “president” Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, thanks to his Holocaust-denying rants and virulent anti-Semitism.  Canada plans to protest his presence today at the United Nations, with their entire delegation walking out of the chamber when Ahmadinejad takes the podium.  The big question will be whether other nations join Canada’s protest of this hate-spewing oppressor, including the US:

Canada will boycott Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s speech at the United Nations today, saying his outbursts about the Holocaust and Israel are “shameful.”

Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon will be at the world body to attend the opening of the UN General Assembly’s annual debate, but officials signal he and other members of the Canadian delegation will vacate when the Islamic republic’s president approaches the podium.

Walking out of the chamber is seen as a strong diplomatic show of disgust at the UN — and since the 192-member chamber is generally packed on the first day of the annual summit, Canada’s empty seats will not go unnoticed.

“President Ahmadinejad’s repeated denial of the Holocaust and his anti-Israel comments run counter to the values of the UN General Assembly, and they’re shameful,” said one Canadian official.

“He uses his public appearances to provoke the international community, and that is why Canada’s seats will be empty.”

Canada will be setting a standard today for the West.  Who will sit and listen to Ahmadinejad’s speech and afford him that kind of credibility after his hateful and lunatic rants?  One can certainly expect the usual suspects to sit in rapt attention: Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Lebanon, Russia, China, and so on.  They have done nothing but enable the mullahs of Iran to conduct nuclear weapons programs, terrorism by proxy, and oppression.

But what about the Western democracies?  Will the UK, France, and Germany sit and listen to Ahmadinejad?  Iran is one of their trading partners, and thus far none of them have shown much inclination to take opportunities to rebuke Iran in public, except when being accused of fomenting unrest.

How about the US?  We don’t have diplomatic relations with Iran, but Barack Obama certainly wants them.  He did everything he could to avoid commenting on the rigged election in Iran that put Ahmadinejad on the dais at Turtle Bay.  Obama wants talks so badly that the White House has shown no inclination to react to Ahmadinejad’s bigotry.  When Canada walks out, it seems extremely unlikely that they will have their southern neighbors joining them — which will be a sorry day indeed for the United States.

Update: Stephen Harper does not mince words:

Impressive. Very impressive. We used to have national leaders here with this kind of clarity.

The main issue is not that Ahmadinejad is saying the Holocaust is a fabrication, but that it has been used to take over another peoples land.

I am not interested in debating the Holocaust, and that is not the point of the thread. I have not looked into the issue carefully enough to make an educated argument either way, anyway. The point that Ahmadinejad is making is why is one side not allowed to debate. You cannot have a debate if there is only one side that is allowed to present their views.

dave742 on September 23, 2009 at 11:04 AM

If you truly cannot be bothered to read even the most basic history texts regarding the elimination of 6 million Jews in Europe during WWII (despite the fact that you correct us here that there were only 5.2 million killed… and the 13 million figure contains intellectuals, gypsies, homosexuals, political prisoners, and ethnic minorities inside the occupied countries of the Third Reich. Not just Jews.), then what right do you have to express an opinion on the post and expect it to be reasonably considered?

You most assuredly do have an opinion. You HAVE researched it enough to feel that ImaNutJob is justified in his comments. You imply the denial of the undisputable FACTs in evidence even 60 years later at the sites of the concentration camps, the hundreds of thousands of different, yet self substantiating records kept by Nazi documentarians of the millions of Jews sent to their deaths and RECORDED by Nazi Death Camp personnel in their own documents, not to mention the eyewitness accounts of those Jews who survived and have been documented for over 60 years now. You support ImaNutJob’s position that debate over the causes and fates of Holocaust death camps, after the vast majority of the eyewitnesses are dead, is a worthy and debatable subject for rational people who are supposed to be leading their people in rational policies and amicable discourse amongst the human beings on Earth.

Of course, this is the UN. Where is rationality supposed to enter into it?

You may deny the facts exist. You may deny that you have seen them and the contrary facts and opinions of deniers. You may deny what is apparent to all the Western World, that ImaNutJob is a Liar and a Murderer of American Troops, Iraqi civilians, and his own citizenry. You may decry any attempt to question his or your logic as unreasonable.

But you cannot deny that you are unwilling to accept other’s points of view, and that you would do not one thing to stop genocide anywhere on the face of this Earth, no matter how apparent or how horrible. Because Cowards always find a reason not to stand, but to hide. And Cowards will always live far more wretched and horrible lives than the Valiant who stand against Tyranny anywhere and everywhere it is exposed, and die in the process.

dave742 on September 23, 2009 at 10:26 AM

You are wrong. Try this:

“They (the Western powers) launched the myth of the Holocaust. They lied, they put on a show and then they support the Jews.

“If as you claim the Holocaust is true, why can a study not be allowed?” he said to chants of “Death to Israel” from the crowd gathered for the annual display of solidarity with the Palestinians.

“The pretext for establishing the Zionist regime is a lie… a lie which relies on an unreliable claim, a mythical claim, and the occupation of Palestine has nothing to do with the Holocaust,” he added.

“This claim is corrupt and the pretext is corrupt. This (the Israeli) regime’s days are numbered and it is on its way to collapse. This regime is dying.”

When you call something a myth, you deny its existence and occurrance.

I am in some agreement with you over the fact that Israel has taken land from the Palestinians (and is continuing to do so), but that doesn’t change the fact that this guy denies the Holocaust, and, if he gets his way, Israel will die a nuclear death. Israel, regardless of the manner of its founding, has a right and an obligation to protect its citizens. If the Israelis “take out” Iran’s nuclear ambitions, I will be firmly on their side of the stadium rooting away.

The Canadian walkout is not only about the Holocaust and the hateful disgusting disrespectful speeches of A-jad. It’s also about Zahra Kazemi and the Canadian Newsweek reporter. And possibly about Iranian support of Afghanistan terrorists who kill Canadian soldiers.

Unfortunately Obama is in a more difficult situation than Canada is. Canada is not at the front of nuclear negotiations with Iran, and not the biggest player in Afghanistan, and not a player at all in Iraq. America is. So Obama cannot walk out as easily as the Canadian delegation can.

Of course we’ve already proven to you that Ahmedinejad did more than call it a myth. He also called it a “lie”, “unprovable”, and a claim he doesn’t “accept”.

Plus, he’s a dictator interested in obtaining nukes who has said Israel should be “wiped off the map”, so most reasonable people care far more about what he has to say than what an Israeli scholar says.

And before I end this, I’m sure you’re going to tell me how wrong that “wipe off the map” quote is and how he was just saying that Israel shouldn’t exist not that he wants to eradicate it.

That’s certainly an easy way to spin the quote, but to do so, you have to ignore the vast majority of what he’s said publicly, an easy feet for an apologist to be sure, but significantly harder with open eyes.

Is this Israeli scholar denying the Holocaust?

dave742 on September 23, 2009 at 11:57 AM

No. Note the conjunction — the word “myth” applies to the expression (A AND B) which follows. In English, the word “and” implies that both conjunctives must be true for the expression to be true. The full article shows that context (that the Holocaust is used by some to justify the actions around the founding of the State of Israel). The expression is used by many Israelis — see here for another in-context example:

In this light, let us look again at our understanding of the Holocaust. The conventional view of contemporary Jewish history sees the Holocaust as a prelude to the creation of the State of Israel. This is the myth of Holocaust and redemption. We all recoil from implying that the Holocaust is the price the Jewish people had to pay for Israel. We know that even the triumph of statehood could not have warranted the tragedy that preceded it. But most of us, nevertheless, connect the two events. When United Jewish Appeal missions stop in Auschwitz on their way to Israel and the March of the Living takes Jewish children to Poland for Yom Ha’shoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, and then on to Israel for Yom Ha’atsmaut, Israel Independence Day, the message is that the Holocaust is a prelude to Israel and that the two must be understood together.

By contrast, I believe that the Holocaust is the last and most gruesome manifestation of the old paradigm, the one that left Jews to the mercy of others. I view Israel as the celebration of the new paradigm, the one that enables Jews to have as much say in their own destiny as any other free people. The conventional view regards Israel as a potential victim and equates anti-Zionism with the old anti-Semitism. My approach celebrates Israel as the victor and views Zionism as the liberation movement of the Jewish people. This means the Holocaust and Israel belong to different categories.

Also from Dr. Neusner, an opinion which certainly negates your contention that he considers the Holocaust a myth:

“Just as various governments, corporations, and institutions have acknowledged their role in the Holocaust process by publicly apologizing, paying reparations, or taking other appropriate steps to face up to their past, so too should ‘Homes & Gardens’ squarely face up to its past. We urge ‘Homes & Gardens’ to make the full 1938 article available at no cost to interested readers, together with a formal letter of apology from the publisher.”

You said that: “When you call something a myth, you deny its existence and occurrance.”

Neusner, along with your example, talked about the “myth of Holocaust and redemption.” You are now concentrating and the word “and”. So is Neusner calling both the Holocaust and the redemption myths? Or is he calling the package of the two a myth? Either way, I don’t understand how he is not calling the Holocaust a myth.

negates your contention that he considers the Holocaust a myth

You are misunderstanding me. I do not think Neusner is denying the Holocaust. He is simply using the term “myth” as it is meant to be used. This is exactly how Ahmadinejad uses the word. I have no doubt that Ahmadinejad intentionally says things that will be jumped on by the Western press. I am sure it is amusing for him.

chemman:

At what point does the totality of a persons quotes reach a tipping point indicating that they are using a term (myth)in its conventional sense?

Ahmadinejad is using the term in the conventional sense. You need to look up the word.

The point of all this is that the Western media (and much more so blogs and other internet sources) fabricates Ahmadinejad quotes. I have researched this extensively by reading several dozen complete speeches using Lexis Nexis. It’s a simple demonization technique that’s been done forever. When you read the speeches, his point is not to deny the Holocaust. His point is to ask why the Palestinians have to suffer for it. If you cannot see that the Palestinians were asked to pay for the Holocaust, then you are blind. His other point is that the West will not discuss the issue rationally, but simple deny discussion, or call the debater names, like what happens on this blog. Or else they will put the debater in jail. He wonders why this is so, when free speech is supposed to be a cherished right in the West. These are his points. They are valid points.

dave742 on September 23, 2009 at 1:38 PM

This may have been somewhat coordinated. Canada is carrying the West’s water on this one and making a statement for those countries that prefer to keep “smart power” (sarc) options on the table for now. While I’d prefer it if the US also made a principled stand, I can see the faulty logic.

dave742 on September 23, 2009 at 1:38 PM

I’ve already indicated how I parse the phrase with regard to the “myth”. Dr. Neusner’s meaning is just as obvious as Dow Marmur’s meaning. Your questioning after my explanation is a red herring. Here I bite just the tiniest piece before I spit the thing out.

Mr. Ahmadinejad’s meaning is equally obvious. He does not talk of “Holocaust and redemption” — he merely says “Holocaust”, surrounded by raging crowds yelling “Death to Israel!”. He does not correct those crowds, because he does not desire to.

I am not blind. Just as I support the Palestinians who nonviolently seek their ancestral rights (such as the case of ‘Imwas), I support the right of the State of Israel to protect its citizenry. I view this as a case of Cowboys vs. Indians — when I was young, I rooted for the Cowboys, but now that I am grown up and understand what was taken from the Indians and done to them, I’m a bit more balanced, even as I enjoy what the Cowboys “won” for me. I once would have rooted for Custer at Little Big Horn, but no more.

unclesmrgol on September 23, 2009 at 2:04 PM

Will the US join Canada in A’jad walkout?

One could hope, but it a fools hope as the odds (40 to 1 as NickelandDime suggest) favor it not happening.

I’ll put my 2 cents in:

Anyone who thinks A’jad hasn’t denied the Holocaust needs to read up on his statements.

Holocaust deniers do exist in Israel sadly. Some Israelis even do this.

Fact is, there are so many witnesses, and so much evidence that this took place documented by both the Germans, and the other nations, that to deny it is to be either ignorant of history, or so foolish as to become almost vile and evil for it.

It’s a mad mad mad mad mad world when Canada has more leadership and guts than the US on this one point.

And right now I’m a very angry man for it.

He has today gone too far. Standing in front of the worst dictators of the world and once again putting this great land down. As Rush said at the top of his show. This man HAS DONE NOTHING to add to the greatness of this country. All he has done and those with him is SUCK the teet of the advantages given to him by it.
He makes me puke, and from now on I WILL NOT refer to him as the president of anything other than the two hold shit house he is running at the white house.
I tried to give him a chance to be an American, but he has broken the last straw with me.
THIS FRAUD IS NOT MY PRESIDENT

Ah-sneazed-on-mah-dinner-jacket is delusional. Everybody knows that. So what? He denies the Holocaust. Why? I’ll tell you why. Brownie points. He’s sucking up to the Mullahs and the Told’yahs. I compare it to flame bait. He knows it’s incendiary. He lobs it anyway. The Jews flare, I flare, but best of all for him is the cheering crowds. How many of the cheering crowd support the opposition? Some of them no doubt. At the end of the day, it’s still the religion of peace and the verse of the sword. He’s just preaching to the choir. He says wipe the Jews from the earth and they lap it up.

btw: They like it, don’t they?

Blacksmith8 on September 23, 2009 at 2:29 PM

I disagree. It just gives the feeling that the US wants to run away from a debate. Strikes me as more of a remnant of the old days of imperialism. I don’t think it is beneficial with the scrutiny of today’s news cycle/internet impact.

LevStrauss on September 23, 2009 at 1:32 PM

A debate? The moment the US is reduced to debating over whether or not the Holocaust happened is the moment we lose.

This is exactly how Ahmadinejad uses the word.

Even assuming your correct, how does he use the word “lie” then? What about when he says he won’t accept the claim from Europeans that it happened?

You still haven’t answered for those.

His point is to ask why the Palestinians have to suffer for it.

dave742 on September 23, 2009 at 1:38 PM

You left out the rest of the sentence. “If it truly happened.” That’s his entire point. If the Holocaust actually happened, then why is Israel in the Middle East (where Israel used to have a nation, as opposed to building a nation among those who tried to exterminate them).

And no, Palestine is only suffering from self inflicted wounds.

ProfessorMiao on September 23, 2009 at 2:57 PM

I’m Canadian and a Conservative. I’m glad Harper had the guts to clearly state what the US and other countries should say as well. Remember, we had a Canadian citizen, on a trip to Iran, a woman with Iranian heritage, who took some pictures in Iran, was arrested, imprisoned and accused of being a spy…. which was bs. She was beaten to death, buried there against the family in Canada’s wishes, then exhumed and found to have broken bones, burns, nails ripped out, etc. The facts were first covered up and then admitted and a colonel was charged, then the charges were dropped and the case closed. This happened only a year or so ago. Obama will probably bow to this dolt as well.

I’m jealous of those with dual Canadian and US citizenship. Seems like that might come in handy.

Esthier:

What about when he says he won’t accept the claim from Europeans that it happened?

OK. Let’s look at this quote. You quoted this earlier as follows:

Some European countries insist on saying that Hitler killed millions of innocent Jews in furnaces…Although we don’t accept this claim…

This is from December 8, 2005. The AP quoted the first part as follows:

Saying that “some European countries insist on saying that during World War II, Hitler burnt millions of Jews,” Ahmadinejad suggested “let’s give some land to the Zionists in Europe or in Germany or Austria so they can have their government there.”

This is from Lexis Nexis, but the beginning of the article, including most of what I quoted, can be seen here:

accessmylibrary.com/coms2/summary_0286-11983096_ITM

Notice that in the AP quote, there is absolutely nothing about Ahmadinejad saying “we don’t accept this claim”. Weird, huh.

In another AP article by a different author, it says:

“Some European countries insist on saying that during World War II, Hitler burned millions of Jews and put them in concentration camps,” Ahmadinejad said. “Any historian, commentator or scientist who doubts that is taken to prison or gets condemned.”

Once again, nothing about “we don’t accept this claim”. CAMERA says that the AP intentionally left this part out, and other news sources reported it, such as WaPo, Times (London), etc. A “whitewash”:

blog.camera.org/archives/2005/12/ap_whitewashes.html

But let’s look where this quote came from originally. On Lexis, the first occurence of this is from Xinhua General News Service, on December 8, 2005 Thursday 5:30 PM EST:

Iran’s official IRNA news agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying: “Some European countries insist on saying that Hitler killed millions of innocent Jews in furnaces … Although we don’t accept this claim.”

Western News agencies picked up the quote from Xinhua, and started publishing it the next day, the 9th. Xinhua is your source for this quote. What is their source?? Their source is Iranian news outlets. You can look up these sources on Lexis. Xinhua got their quote from an Iranian source which was reprinted by the BBC here:

BBC Monitoring Middle East – Political
Supplied by BBC Worldwide Monitoring
December 8, 2005 Thursday
Iran president proposes “creation of Zionist state” in Europe

Here is what the original Iranian source says:

Ahmadinezhad told Al-Alam if the European countries admit to the fact that they killed the Jews in World War II and Hitler was responsible for burning and annihilating the Jews, why then they won’t give a part of Europe to Zionists to set up any government they wish? Europeans believe they should support the forces which occupies Qods, since the Jews were victimized in World War II. We, however, don’t accept this. It is one thing for Europe to continue to insist on this point, but why should it try to give part of the Palestinian land to them? Germany and Austria can give two or three of their provinces to the Zionists regime, so it can set a country. This would be a real solution to this problem. Why the Europeans insist on supporting a tumour in the Middle East through imposing their will on other powers. This will prolong the conflict and tension. In any event, this is a proposal that has our support.

I highlighted the parts of interest. The AP quoted the passage correctly, and of course, CAMERA berated them for quoting it correctly. What the Western news sources did was to lie. The part about “we don’t accept this” refers to the previous sentence, which is “Europeans believe they should support the forces which occupies Qods, since the Jews were victimized in World War II”. Ahmadinejad does “not accept” Europeans saying that Iran should support Israel.

This is a good example of my point. Everything you read in the Western media is fabricated. Take a good look at what they did here. They are lying to you, and you believe every word.

To all of you Holocaust deniers who have posted your reprehensible filth on this site – you have only further proved how much you have your collective heads in the sand or up in another orifice. If the latter is the case, I would strongly suggest that you get a plasectomy so you could see clearly through your stomach. On second thought, the plasectomy will not reverse the lobotomy or abject stupidity that you have displayed in your ridiculous posts. So it is probably a waste of time.

There is no debate here because the Holocaust did occur and there is irrefutable evidence to back that up. For starters, the German government recognizes the Holocaust happened. There is even a monument to the Holocaust outside the German parliament. If that is not enough, you can venture down towards Munich and visit Bergen Belsen which is less than a 45 minute train ride away. There, you will see the first hand the ovens and the gas chambers among the barracks buildings. Don’t forget to look up above the gate when you enter where you can read how “work will set you free.” And don’t forget to read the plaques that describe what happened to the people who were imprisoned there. Also, don’t forget to read how the U.S. Army liberated that camp. If you are still confused about the Holocaust, take a trip east to Poland and visit Auschwitz. Since you holocaust deniers are either “peace loving” Muslims or communists, perhaps you will give more credence to the Holocaust since the Soviet Army liberated that camp. And, according to your Dear Leader Comrade Obama – his grandfather was there to liberate the Jews at Auschwitz – even though he was in the U.S. Army. Remember during the campaign how Barry described how deeply moved he was of his typical white uncle’s experience liberating the death camp with the Soviet Army.

And on this of all days that this topic comes up, Barry Obama Soetoro is lecturing the U.N. on how Israel has no right to build more settlements. I say – good for you Israel! Keep building and know that the usurper does not speak for most Americans – not me.

On a final note, I worked in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries. One of the most shocking things that I learned is that one of the top Google searches for peace loving Muslim teenager is Adolf Hitler. That shows you the mentality there. Of course, we do not criticize the Tragic Kingdom enough because of the oil but that is for another discussion.

Just to recap: You idiotic Holocaust deniers make me sick and you should be ashamed of yourselves. If you can’t go to Germany or Poland, just go to the library or one of the Holocaust and/or tolerance museums that are in many cities that chronicle those events that occurred in Europe from the 1930s until 1945. However you respond, I know that debating with idiot Holocaust deniers is a complete and utter waste of time. Shame on you!

Speaking of Americans who know how to stand up to holocaust denying anti Semites, I thought this was an interesting little piece from The Examiner:

For anyone who supported Ron Paul’s 2008 presidential campaign, it was a frustrating thing to watch how the media treated him. One of the media personalities that was particularly disappointing to watch with Ron Paul was Glenn Beck. Overall, he seemed to agree with Paul’s ideas the most, and yet he would often preface any agreements he had with Paul by saying things like “I don’t agree with Ron Paul on everything–not by a long shot.” He would say that Paul was on the “fringe” and had some “kooky” ideas.

Well, now Beck is wishing for a time machine. On his radio show last week, he apologized to libertarians everywhere for calling himself a libertarian in the past. He has long called himself a conservative with libertarian leanings, but he said he is now leaning so far libertarian that he is almost horizontal. He said, “I’m going through a change here.”

Beck would like the time machine to take him back eighteen months. Why? To go back to when he was calling Ron Paul a “crackpot on so many issues.” Now, he laments, “Gosh. I’d like to reexamine all those issues.” Among those issues is America’s occupation of many foreign countries; Beck specifically mentions Germany, Korea, and Afghanistan. He admits that America’s imperialism has caused a lot of problems. He said, “Progressive members of the Republican party wanted to make sure that we spread sunshine, lollipops, happiness, and democracy to all around the world. That’s great. But the best way to do that is to live a righteous life and be a good example.” And he repeated what Paul has been saying for years, “Besides, we can’t afford it anymore!”

Terrye on September 23, 2009 at 4:18 PM
