Video: ‘Cuda attack in Hong Kong
posted at 4:15 pm on September 23, 2009 by Allahpundit
For a speech that some on the left stupidly maintained was an elaborate “prank,” it sure does seem to have been treated pretty seriously by those who were there (seriously enough, in fact, to inspire two Palin-haters to walk out in a huff). Alas, the event was closed to the press so this tiny clip of her burnishing her “Main Street” credentials ahead of 2012 is the best I can do, but the Journal got hold of the entire vid somehow and published some of the choicer excerpts. She touches on “death panels,” of course, but for my money this is the most significant bit:
Lack of government wasn’t the problem. Government policies were the problem. The marketplace didn’t fail. It became exactly as common sense would expect it to. The government ordered the loosening of lending standards. The Federal Reserve kept interest rates low. The government forced lending institutions to give loans to people who, as I say, couldn’t afford them. Speculators spotted new investment vehicles, jumped on board and rating agencies underestimated risks…
How can we discuss reform without addressing the government policies at the root of the problems? The root of the collapse? And how can we think that setting up the Fed as the monitor of systemic risk in the financial sector will result in meaningful reform? The words “fox” and “hen house” come to mind. The Fed’s decisions helped create the bubble. Look at the root cause of most asset bubbles, and you’ll see the Fed somewhere in the background.
Ending the Fed is currently job one among the Paulnuts and an occasional hobbyhorse for Glenn Beck. Sounds to me like Palin’s positioning herself as the strong-form libertarian rEVOLution alternative to Mitt and Huck. Are the Paulnuts going to cotton to her reputation for social conservatism, though? Seems like an odd match in style, if not in substance, but not a bad strategy all in all.
Palin-skeptics may, perhaps, enjoy Time’s write-up of the event, featuring snotty asides about her “rattling off financial terms of art” and “rambling” about the ancient land bridge that once joined Asia to Alaska. Exit question: Is Sarahcuda really more “Main Street” than Huck? Dude, the guy used to eat squirrel — that he cooked in a popcorn machine. How much more “authentic” can you get? I ask you.
Update: The phrase of the day is, of course, “common sense.”

Sweet. Between her and Beck they are putting some serious heat on. Now if only we can get her to be VP with Newt at the helm.

We need a blog post on this
It has come to RedState’s attention that the person at Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (”CMS”) that issued the threat to Humana is Jonathan Blum, a former senior Baucus staffer.

Her “reputation” for social conservatism is just that. Her actual track record in office belies that reputation.

So taking the position that the Fed shouldn’t be the monitor of systemic risk now makes you a Paulnut?

I got it: Obama is going to pass healthcare, and the dem congress will switch in 2010. The Republicans will struggle with making the numbers work, and taxes will have to go up to pay for the dem mandates.
Then, Obama will blame the repubs when the taxes go up, and he will get re-elected.

DaveS on September 23, 2009 at 4:24 PM
I consider “Main Street” an example of normal or the majority of people. I am pretty sure that squirrel is not on the weekly menu plans in most homes in the U.S. after 1920. And although cooking it in a popcorn popper may be a fine example of thinking outside of the box, it’s one of those experiences better left untold.

Why is everyone so enamored with Newt? Sure, he did a great job as speaker during the Republican Revolution under Klinton, but ever since he hitched his wagon onto the “climate change” movement (or whatever they’re calling it this week) I have lost all faith in him
Let Palin run for the #1 slot with another great conservative woman at #2. Maybe a Palin / Bachman ticket?

somewhat OT (o.k., perhaps a LOT O.T), but Tony Blankley (Wash Times) referred to “the formerly mainstream media, or FMSM”.
I would urge as many people as possible use this terminology (FMSM) at every opportunity so that it becomes 2d nature and a part of every American’s everyday vocabulary.

Call me crazy, but the woman knows her stuff. I don’t care who’s writing her speeches(and you know the left will harp on that endlessly), as long as it reflects what she believes, she’s got my vote.
Provided she can get past the “quitting” label that’s bound to be thrown at her in the primaries, how does she not win the nomination with speeches like this?

National Bank, precursor to Fed. It was Andrew Jackson that killed it. Believe he had it etched on his tombstone, believing it to be his magnum opus.
Anyhow, most Paul fans I know are to ideologically ‘pure’ to run to Palin. But, this strategy could appeal to a lot of republitarians and independents.

So you’re saying Ronald Reagan was more like a libertarian than a conservative Republican?
She’s clearly positioning herself as a Reagan conservative – more Reaganesque than Reagan, you might even say, since Reagan’s small government conservatism in significant parts was sacrificed on the altar of the Cold War. It was a defensible trade-off, but it points to the unfinished business of the Reagan Revolution that urgently needs to be employed.
AP may not love SP, but he picked an excellent passage to highlight. It’s just insisting on label control, when so few work with the same definitions of the various labels, is futile.
