About that Arctic ice disappearance …

posted at 12:15 pm on September 23, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

National Geographic in summer 2008:

Arctic warming has become so dramatic that the North Pole may melt this summer, report scientists studying the effects of climate change in the field.

“We’re actually projecting this year that the North Pole may be free of ice for the first time [in history],” David Barber, of the University of Manitoba, told National Geographic News aboard the C.C.G.S. Amundsen, a Canadian research icebreaker. …

But this summer’s forecast—and unusual early melting events all around the Arctic—serve as a dire warning of how quickly the polar regions are being affected by climate change.

National Geographic this week:

This year’s cooler-than-expected summer means the Arctic probably won’t experience ice-free summers until 2030 or 2040, scientists say.

Some models had previously predicted that the Arctic could be ice free in summer by as soon as 2013, due to rising temperatures from global warming.

Scientifically, what does this tell us about the climate-change models used to make this hysterical claim?

  1. They’re completely wrong and should be jettisoned — or,
  2. They speak to a larger truth and should be used and heretics skeptics shunned

Which option would a real scientist choose, and which one would a political hack with interests in glomming onto big government grants choose?

Oh, let’s not always see the same hands …

I don’t understand why they take these fictional numbers about climate change as gospel. But they won’t take the actual numbers concerning our fiscal liability disaster seriously.

Medicare and Social Security are more likely to go broke than ice melting. And Medicare and Social Security ARE a direct result of human activity (more specifically government activity).

Basically I wish they would figure out what they could control and what they could not control and legislate based on that. They can’t control the climate. . . they can control their spending.

ThackerAgency on September 23, 2009 at 12:47 PM

I don’t know how any of these scientists that predicted “global warming” can call themselves scientists when none, zero, nada of their climate models ever took into account the sun! What? Sun activity having an effect on the earth’s climate? Ya don’t say? So now we are having record low sunspot activity and voila, the earth is cooler. Duh?

I saw a documentary about the construction of this building in antartica a couple years ago. This building has a feature that allows the whole building to be raised as the ice increases below while its resident scientists study the effects of global warming.

WashJeff on September 23, 2009 at 12:33 PM

That’s because the presence of the building slows down the wind, which causes the snow to pile up under the building. This would happen regardless of whether the temperatures were going up or down.

That 4000 foot thick ice blanket melted long ago, before so-called “human caused” global warming was a factor.

Here in San Antonio, we’ve had a drought for several years. The news media continually scolds us not to use excessive water, etc. and for our existing use.

Now it’s been raining and the aqufiers are filling.

No matter what happens, it’s bad news, it’s a crisis and government needs to do something.

My question is why do we follow so easily when they purposely change the language about the freak stuff they are peddling. It WAS Global Warming. When it was clear the world was no longer “warming,” they simply changed it to climate “change” as if the climate is supposed to stay stagnant forever or we have to freak out.

Why do WE change? Why don’t we start asking, “Hey, what happened to that whole Global Warming thing?” You know force them to play by their own rules… Seems I remember hearing that somewhere.

In Tennessee the people don’t question Gore’s intentions as they are obviously clear. What they do question is his sanity. They still think that Gore’s ability to get Hillary Care’s health reform as a model for the then instituted health program for the state of Tennessee under the guise of TennCare was one of the defining reasons he was chosen for VP. As will happen to the nation if health reform, as this misguided system was, is put in place that nearly bankrupt the state. TennCare was drastically corrected, safing the state, but now it appears on the national level in its original form. By the way, if Gore had of carried his home state, Florida would’ve been irrelevant and he would’ve been president.

Scientists are not priests. They are not gods. They are dead wrong regularly, as regularly as anyone else. They just have the best formal system for weeding out wrongness. When it’s used, at least.

Except that spring didn’t come for over six hundred years or thereabouts.

The inconvenient and obvious FACT these villages prove by their mere existence is that the Earth was far warmer when these villages were inhabited (like duh, why is it called Greenland?) than it is now and like duh, dude, there were like no cars or other man made CO2.

Yes. Here in eastern Virginia we refer to “climate change” as “seasons”. We have four of them. However when I lived in Florida we had only two, summer and several days in January. I much prefer four.

PS Our leaves are beginning to change from green to other colors, colors typically associated with the season we call “autumn”. This must mean we’re entering a period of globull cooling! Thank you, AlGore, you have saved us!

We have 3 seasons. Winter, 9 months, Summer 1 month, Autumn 2 months

Jeff from WI on September 23, 2009 at 1:41 PM

I remember Time & Newsweek articles in I think 1978 about the coming Ice Age due to pollution. Scientists PROVED it was happening and we’d better clean up our act or we’d all be a giant ice tray by the year 2000

When I lived in Iowa I said we had 4 seasons: Cold, F’n Cold, Tornado, and Heat Wave.

On the first day of autumn here in Southern Oregon, it was over 100 degrees and the hillsides were all on fire!

That MUST mean, global warming is true, after all anecdotal evidence is the bestest evidence there ever was!

This year’s cooler-than-expected summer means the Arctic probably won’t experience ice-free summers until 2030 or 2040, scientists say.

Just like the theory evolution, just add time and everything falls magically into place.

What about all those warnings about “Black Ice” (really clear ice on the road at night) in the wintertime?

Hhmmmmmmmmm…

Colbyjack on September 23, 2009 at 12:40 PM

That’s true. And what about pool? All those colored balls being chased around by a white ball.

LibTired on September 23, 2009 at 1:52 PM

Well it’s snowing here in Colorado. Must be that darned Climate Change!

saltydogg14 on September 23, 2009 at 1:53 PM

I’d love to sit and chat but I need to flee the shoreline ahead of our rapidly rising oceans…

CliffHanger on September 23, 2009 at 1:56 PM

Yeah, why is it every time it gets cold here in Colorado I’m checking to see where Algore is?

CliffHanger on September 23, 2009 at 1:58 PM

Maybe they will start freaking out over cell phone towers and honey bee populations for a bit. Sort of how the multi limbed frogs they claimed were caused by pollution, held them over during the global cooling to global warming gap.

jhffmn on September 23, 2009 at 1:40 PM

I cannot think of one. Carbon was their most abitious attempt to grap power. What is more ubiquitous than carbon? Hydrogen, Oxygen and Nitrogen. I do not see how they can turn one of those three into some earth ending disaster. So they bet the farm on carbon, and they in the processing of losing.

Last year’s big scam: “Global Warming”

This year’s big scam: “Healthcare Reform”

I wonder what’s on tap for next year?

JohnBG on September 23, 2009 at 12:43 PM

Answer: Immigration reform scam
