Wonderful: Obama grants visa to Burmese junta member — but not to Honduran leaders
posted at 6:54 pm on September 22, 2009 by Allahpundit
It figures that the one campaign promise he’s been diligent about keeping isn’t winning in Afghanistan but improving diplomatic relations with the world’s biggest degenerates.
Granting a waiver for Nyan Win to visit Washington is a diplomatic coup for a regime that is continuing, as this is being written, a military offensive against ethnic groups that has already resulted in more than one million internally displaced refugees and tens of thousands more pouring over the border into China, Thailand, India and Bangladesh; more than 3,200 villages burned, and most heinous — the use of rape as an instrument of war against women. The regime is actively engaged in war crimes. This is in addition to the oppression of Burma’s democratic freedom fighters and the everyday killings and murders that are standard regime fare. If a Burmese official of comparable rank has visited Washington in the last 20 years, no one I talked to can remember it…
What is he doing here and with whom is he meeting?
Look to Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) for the answer to those questions.
On September 15 I reported on a closed-door meeting between Senator Webb and Secretary Clinton. Burma watchers raised eyebrows and speculated that Webb was making a last-ditch attempt at influencing the Burma policy review that State Department officials say should be released tomorrow by Clinton in New York City. Webb has been in the forefront of pressing the administration to engage with the regime and drop U.S. sanctions as part of a bizarre effort to check Chinese influence in that shattered country. Sources tell THE WEEKLY STANDARD that Webb enlisted Clinton’s help in obtaining a visa for Nyan Win during their meeting last week.
That’s from Goldfarb, in the highest of high dudgeon over this at the Standard. Follow the link for much more, including the WaPo-supplied detail that among Nyan Win’s “sightseeing” stops in D.C. this weekend were the Lincoln Memorial and … the White House. Exit question: Why is it that this monster gets to pal around with Jim Webb in Washington while Ahmadinejad and Qaddafi are looking for places to stay in NYC, and yet the leaders of the Honduras non-coup — whose next free election is on schedule for November 29 — can’t get visas to come here? You’re a disgrace, Barry.

How would this counter Chinese influence? US is never going to be as good a friend to Burma as China. BBC via AOSHQ. The Hondurans also said Zelaya can stay in there for 5-10 years, if he wants, which Ace speculates is how much jail time Zelaya’d get for his crimes.
The embassy is surrounced by Honduran troops, too. Go for it, Ian.

Yeah, the UN invites Zelaya to address them as Honduras’ leader and signals to the rest of the world that illegitimate despots are perfectly accesptable while those who struggle to against them to maintain democracy are not. And Obama thinks the UN is the best force for peace in the world. I guess they also think that despotism is the best way to prevent war. Where things stand down there as far as I know.
Micheletti formally requested that the government of Brazil either turn over Zelaya to Honduran authorities or give him amnesty and take him out of the country.
Brazil has refused.
Zelaya has been whipping up his supporters into a frenzy via cel phone and the Venezuelan television station TeleSur.
There have been mass arrests of Marxist Zelaya supporters that responded to his calls to violate the 26 hour curfew.
The Brazilian Embassy is now surrounded. Water, Electricity, and Telephone lines have been cut off. The security forces today cleared the area of Zelaya supporters and cordoned it off. The military brought in and have begun using a non lethal directed sonic weapon/device that makes the embassy almost untenable.
The embassy has about 300 Brazilian diplomats, Zelaya supporters and leftist journalists inside. They have a generator but are running low on supplies. They say they have 5 children inside the embassy but have not asked to let them out instead using them as shields.
The US Embassy has asked what it can do to help relieve the Brazilian embassy which is apperantly 1500 feet away.
Why is Obama offering assistance to Zelaya, Chavez, and Lula da Silva?

rockmom on September 22, 2009 at 8:31 PM
The Honduran government must have made contigency plans for something like this because they have responded quickly to this latest Chavez/Obama threat and contained Zelaya in a box.
They closed all the airports so that Zelaya’s foreign sycophants could not land and have dropped a hammer on his Marxist supporters within the country.
This is the endgame by the way. I can’t see a situation where Zelaya walks out of this a free man let alone as President of Honduras. At this point he’ll be lucky if he walks away at all.
elduende on September 22, 2009 at 8:33 PM
Because they are his ideological brethren.
When it comes to international affairs, it seems the more strongly he states something (e.g. commitment to missile defence for eastern Europe, commitment to winning in Afghanistan, support of Israel’s right to defend itself, etc) the more likely he is to against his ‘principle’.

My daughter in law is Burmese with family still there. A senator from my state (Webb) is in some large measure responsible for getting visas for some inhuman genocidal perverts to enter my country while denying the rightful leader of a democratic nation permission to address the U.N. Oh and did I mention that I detest communists, have since I was a child. The actions of this administration in the Honduras affair is nothing less than criminal.
