Wonderful: Obama grants visa to Burmese junta member — but not to Honduran leaders

posted at 6:54 pm on September 22, 2009 by Allahpundit

It figures that the one campaign promise he’s been diligent about keeping isn’t winning in Afghanistan but improving diplomatic relations with the world’s biggest degenerates.

Granting a waiver for Nyan Win to visit Washington is a diplomatic coup for a regime that is continuing, as this is being written, a military offensive against ethnic groups that has already resulted in more than one million internally displaced refugees and tens of thousands more pouring over the border into China, Thailand, India and Bangladesh; more than 3,200 villages burned, and most heinous — the use of rape as an instrument of war against women. The regime is actively engaged in war crimes. This is in addition to the oppression of Burma’s democratic freedom fighters and the everyday killings and murders that are standard regime fare. If a Burmese official of comparable rank has visited Washington in the last 20 years, no one I talked to can remember it…

What is he doing here and with whom is he meeting?

Look to Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) for the answer to those questions.

On September 15 I reported on a closed-door meeting between Senator Webb and Secretary Clinton. Burma watchers raised eyebrows and speculated that Webb was making a last-ditch attempt at influencing the Burma policy review that State Department officials say should be released tomorrow by Clinton in New York City. Webb has been in the forefront of pressing the administration to engage with the regime and drop U.S. sanctions as part of a bizarre effort to check Chinese influence in that shattered country. Sources tell THE WEEKLY STANDARD that Webb enlisted Clinton’s help in obtaining a visa for Nyan Win during their meeting last week.

That’s from Goldfarb, in the highest of high dudgeon over this at the Standard. Follow the link for much more, including the WaPo-supplied detail that among Nyan Win’s “sightseeing” stops in D.C. this weekend were the Lincoln Memorial and … the White House. Exit question: Why is it that this monster gets to pal around with Jim Webb in Washington while Ahmadinejad and Qaddafi are looking for places to stay in NYC, and yet the leaders of the Honduras non-coup — whose next free election is on schedule for November 29 — can’t get visas to come here? You’re a disgrace, Barry.

Obama must have plans to prevent a free election from taking place in HondurasAmerica.

GaltBlvnAtty on September 22, 2009 at 8:36 PM

Fixed!

xler8bmw on September 22, 2009 at 8:52 PM

Any sign that the government is wavering, or that the military might stop supporting it? I hope not. I’ve been really impressed by Micheletti’s resolve.

ProfessorMiao on September 22, 2009 at 8:36 PM

The military’s resolve won’t collapse because they really have no where to turn if they do. They have taken oaths to the Constitution. Supporting Zelaya means supporting the end of the state. That is what precipitated this in the first place; the military refused to follow Zelaya’s orders to participate in the illegal referendum and when that failed Zelaya called his Marxist supporters into the streets.

George Allen just had to say “macaca,” now I’m represented by this guy Webb. One week he’s doing something commendable, the next he’s causing me to pull my hair out.

That’s the problem with Democrats. They don’t have actual values and just do whatever “feels” right.

Jim Treacher on September 22, 2009 at 8:53 PM

He already said he will not recognize the upcoming elections no matter how monitored they are or who wins.

I didn’t know that. He’s pushing Honduras toward war as surely as he is pushing Israel.

The Socialist candidate for the Presidency called Zelaya out today! Telling him he is deliberately trying to foment violence in order to try and derail the coming elections. It is into this disgusting undemocratic display that Obama has lent his support to Chavez.

elduende on September 22, 2009 at 8:47 PM

Thinking about how much Obama has, um, accomplished in a short 8 months, I shudder to think what he will “achieve” in 4 years. It is absolute insanity that he is backing this nutcase.

Not a bad idea. Unfortunately My DiL lives in Wisconsin so the distance involved is a little prohibitive. I do plan to let Mr. Webb know how I feel about this, now and at election time too.

When the San Jose Negotiations collapsed last month he came out and said it and on Sunday he reiterated it. He said the elections will lack legitimacy if Zelaya is not president of Honduras.

It is INSANE.

I find it difficult to differentiate between the various flavors of sociocommiefascism. I just sort of lump them all together into “Commies”. I know that’s not technically accurate but it’s what I do. I am curious about your comment though about his not being a Marxist. How would you categorize him?

It is also transparently illogical. If Obama is saying that Micheletti or someone else will rig the election, then there is a simple solution – send in international observers. But instead, he is determined to make Honduras into a pariah state indefinitely because they refuse to disobey their own, democratic constitution.

And how does Honduras get back into the ‘world community’ after its election? By reinstating Zelaya then, even though his term would have expired???? Obama is making no sense on this at all.

ProfessorMiao on September 22, 2009 at 9:17 PM

Its worse than that. It is sheer insanity. It is the Chavez policy position. If you parse Obama, Hilary, and the DOS language they have not said anything about rigging the election they are simply calling ANY elections illegitimate. In other words, they are saying no matter how transparent they will be illegitimate. Michelleti invited the UN and the OAS to come in and monitor the elections and the DOS has still called them illegitimate.

And how does Honduras get back into the ‘world community’ after its election? By reinstating Zelaya then, even though his term would have expired???? Obama is making no sense on this at all.

ProfessorMiao on September 22, 2009 at 9:17 PM

They don’t. Basically if they do not violate their constitution are not a satellite of Venezuela they will be a pariah and Obama/Chavez are the complicit parties in this.

elduende on September 22, 2009 at 9:25 PM

Three years, if only they can hang on for three more years maybe we can fix this. It’s gonna be three years too cause even if something comes up and Obama is impeached and removed it’ll be Biden and he won’t rectify the situation.

U.S. says to relay Brazil’s U.N. request on Honduras
Tue Sep 22, 2009 8:44pm ED

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – The United States has received Brazil’s request for an urgent meeting of the U.N. Security Council on the Honduran crisis and will relay it to other members of the body, a U.S. official said on Tuesday.

The United States currently chairs the 15-member council. Deposed Honduran President Manuel Zelaya, ousted from power in a June coup, took refuge in Brazil’s embassy in the capital Tegucigalpa after returning to his country on Monday.

Beware of a Chapter 7 resolution from the UNSC. If that happens watch for a Honduran move into the Brazilian Embassy to arrest Zelaya outright. They may need end up killing Zelaya at this point to end this game.

The Leftists want Obama to give them a Chapter 7 Security Council Resolution with strong economic sanctions against Honduras. Hmmmmm, I wonder if we can get one of those for Iran? I love it! It discredits Obama and the UN at the same time. Beautiful.

elduende on September 23, 2009 at 12:50 AM

Stupid Obama. I wonder, if he goes for economic sanctions at the UN, how he’s going to square those with Soto Cano Airbase and our troops deployed there? Are they not contributing to the local economy?

elduende on September 23, 2009 at 1:01 AM

Neither the the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, nor Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, nor the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, gives the Brazilian Embassy in Tegucigalpa any right to immunity on this issue. Brazil, by allowing Zelaya to foment violence from their embassy in Honduras, could be seen as participating in an act of war against Honduras.

The Honduran government is well within its rights to use force to enter the Brazilian Embassy and take Zelaya into custody.

When you have lemons… Beck’s thoughts do help me out of my Obambi malaise. It is not so much the presidency but 2010. Can this nation sustain 4 more years of Pelosi/Reid? I’m sorry some of our friends have been left without an umbrella but if you are willing to surrender sovereignty (Gaza, Honduran Presidency, Brussels to name a few) for shade only to be burned, then I hope the world will stop looking upon US taxpayers as an ATM. Do it for yourselves as conservatives demonstrated on 9/12. Stop waiting in line for USAID and embrace capitalism.

Might wander into a talk radio or TV studio. Those supreme court justices who ordered Zelaya’s removal. Would give the entirely wrong message to “rule of law” junkies. Call it narrative dissonance.

Ten bucks says OBL shows up at the White House some day as an honored guest or they find OBL’s worm-eaten corpse rotting in a pig sty somewhere and Mr Hussein Obama orders him given a state funeral & burial in Arlington, right next to the Kennedys.

I’m remembering all those who claimed it was better to sit out the 2008 elections and let the Democrats own it. Not that McCain was even a decent candidate, but he wouldn’t be preparing to throw in the towel on Afghanistan or help Zelaya be dictator-for-life, and he would have called a spade a spade in Iran.

If we can just make it to the 2010 elections, we can give Obama what he so richly deserves at this point: impeachment.
