Obama Cabinet official: Americans are children …

posted at 10:12 am on September 22, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The last we heard from Steven Chu, Barack Obama’s Secretary of Energy, someone had to explain to him that oil policy fell within his “domain.”  Now that Chu has apparently mastered what exactly energy means, he now wants to act as a parent to recalcitrant Americans who stubbornly insist on making their own choices in life.  The Wall Street Journal reports on Chu’s attitude towards the role of government, and especially his condescending attitude towards the governed:

When it comes to greenhouse-gas emissions, Energy Secretary Steven Chu sees Americans as unruly teenagers and the Administration as the parent that will have to teach them a few lessons.

Speaking on the sidelines of a smart grid conference in Washington, Dr. Chu said he didn’t think average folks had the know-how or will to to change their behavior enough to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.

“The American public…just like your teenage kids, aren’t acting in a way that they should act,” Dr. Chu said. “The American public has to really understand in their core how important this issue is.” (In that case, the Energy Department has a few renegade teens of its own.)

That last bit of snark references an audit that the Department of Energy failed in its own facilities.  They’re apparently unable to work modern climate-control systems to keep from air conditioning and heating facilities unnecessarily while unoccupied.  Some buildings didn’t even have proper controls installed, and others just weren’t used properly.  Equipment was left powered overnight, including computer monitors.  The White House had similar problems with its audit.

With that humbling experience in mind, one might think that Chu and the Obama administration would approach energy policy with a little more humility.  Nope!  Instead, Chu talks about American citizens as if they cannot be trusted to make their own choices and the need to parent us rather than govern us with our consent.  Most of us have already had parents and don’t see the need to have our elected officials take their place.

And if this is the attitude of the Obama administration on energy policy, just imagine what the attitude will be when they take charge of our health-care system.

This is nothing more than a slightly more honest look at the attitude of the Left when it comes to governance.  It’s all about paternalism and condescension, and the belief that a group of elites should be appointed to rule over the unwashed and unschooled masses for their own good.  That has never been consonant with the American experience, which allows the individual to make his own choices and live with the consequences.  Chu gives us a good look at the liberal soul, and most Americans will not like what they see.

If something horrible had happened during the Joint Session of Congress two weeks ago, we’d have been left with President Chu.

What does understanding “how important this issue is” look like, Mr. Chu? Does it look like all of us agreeing with you and the left about energy issues and their solutions? I thought so. Shut up, hack.

I don’t understand this quote at all. I was there when Steve Chu spoke at UC Berkeley (this was when he was still at LBL), and he was … most respectful (famous) scientist I have ever heard talk.

In fact, when someone tried to goad him into making a snide remark at creationists, I thought he avoided the question very diplomatically, even though he would have been supported in casting them as some kind of flat-earthers.

This must be a case of bad speech-writing (by someone else maybe?) or an isolated case of bad analogy …

novakyu on September 22, 2009 at 11:15 AM

Mix the NEA plan to develop a cadre of artists that design campaigns designed to target specific groups within the population (e.g. college students, workers) with Cass Sunstein’s interest in using “nudging” tactics to manipulate people to act in ways contrary to their intentions and toss in federal funding to be provided by a House bill for research in determining what specific “nudging” tactics would work best on voters and voila! You’ve got yourself a Propaganda Ministry funded by tax dollars.

Now, along comes Chu. I’m gonna bet that he collaborates with these other all-knowing elitists and we start getting pummeled with TV, radio and internet “public service” ads aimed at manipulating us. George Orwell was off by just a few years.

I can’t see how anything bad can come from that!

You know what I’d love to do with guys like this? I’d love to stick them all — including Obama — into a tightly controlled habitat where everything they can possibly do is subject to extremely strict regulations, policed by brownshirts.

I’d regulate everything right down to the number of squares of toilet tissue they are allowed to use to wipe their butts.

Then I’d turn on the cameras and broadcast it as a reality show.

Daggett on September 22, 2009 at 11:16 AM

Once again, with the projection.

Teenagers think they know everything and that they know better than their “stupid” parents.

I think this pretty much sums up the Obama administration.

Chaos Theory makes any predictions of Global Warming Climate Change presposterous and presumptuous.

Weather forecasters can’t predict one week ahead with much accuracy.

But these Wizards of Odds can hone in on the results of current “climate models” decades down the road with shocking acuity, down to the last pathetic drowned polar bear.

Sure.

This is tired, lame, irrationalistic scare tactics and unscientific idiocy by a pandering, feckless, bamboozling fool.

wrabbitslayer on September 22, 2009 at 11:31 AM

Funny. That’s pretty much the same rationale the Iranians used in 1979 to implement velayat-e fiqh. Only they twisted it from the traditional theological interpretation – this is just liberal doctrine to begin with.

seketabi on September 22, 2009 at 11:32 AM

Once again, my belief that this is no longer a “free” country is being proven out. In a “free” country, the government would have no business telling us how to live. In a “free” country, if we were convinced that “man-made climate change” was a problem, we would be “free” to adjust our lives accordingly.

On the other hand, in a “free” country, if we believed “man-made climate change” was a crock being used by unscrupulous people to enrich themselves and acquire power over others, we would also be “free” to live our lives in accordance with that belief.

Having the government dictate to us how cool or warm we can keep our homes, what kind of cars we can drive, whether we can charcoal grill our steaks outside or not, is not a definition of “freedom”, in fact, its an example of a “dictatorship”, wherein the government “dictates” to us how to live.

People like Mr. chu need a quick kick to the rear and a clear understanding that if they continue to try to lord it over the rest of us, they’ll get another!

Fatal on September 22, 2009 at 11:32 AM

If there is one common quality that Obama and his administration has, it’s that they have the need and desire to control the public.

There is no talk of empowering the public and supporting the free-spirit of American ingenuity.

We should all feel like teenagers, they are treating us like we are.

Hehe. Did anyone else catch this? From the article:

The American public…just like your teenage kids, aren’t acting in a way that they should act,” Dr. Chu said.

and then the damage control:

An update: Energy Department spokesman Dan Leistikow added: “Secretary Chu was not comparing the public to teenagers. He was saying that we need to educate teenagers about ways to save energy.

I can’t get a grasp on how they just deny what we can clearly read for ourselves. It just blows my mind how insane it is.

The fundamental flaw in Steven Chu is his assumption that energy should be rationed and controlled by the federal government. His approach can only lead to the destruction of the entire country. He should be replaced immediatly before he can actually inflict any of his ‘make believe world’ solutions on the people of the US.

What we need is more cheap energy. There is no other approach that will ever make any sense. This is true REGARDLESS of any thoughts regarding potential global warming or cooling.

Judging from the entitlement mentality of those who voted in the current administration, Mr. Chu might not be that far off the mark. We’ve long known that liberals are only happy when suckling from the Govvy teet, November taught us that their Great Society and New Deal policies have created a whole generation of those thirsty and salivating for their turn to benefit from redistribution.

They have laid their groundwork well and it is paying off in the loss of our liberty. I blame FDR.

In a way, this Commie SOB has a point. We as a society have abrogated a hell of a lot of our responsibilities to the nation as a whole and have not only voted in these extremists, but have allowed them to gain more power and followers over the decades.

I’m starting to become less upset with the Libtards and more with fellow Conservatives. In my book, it is the Liberals who are immature cry babies who want everything their way and don’t know any better. We Conservatives are the ones who know better-we simply don’t rely on government to solve everything, and we are aware that Socialist programs always fail.

Our complacency allowed them to get them where they are now. They aren’t going away. And I get the feeling that if they do get voted out in the next few elections, most Conservatives will simply want to go back to the way things were.

And then we’ll go through this again…but the result could be far different (assuming they aren’t going to win this time around.)

Hope I’m wrong.
