NBC poll: For the first time, more independents disapprove of Obama than approve
posted at 7:50 pm on September 22, 2009 by Allahpundit
An eight-point swing in just two months. This is not the centrist “pragmatist” they thought they knew.
For the first time, independent voters—who delivered Mr. Obama the White House and Democrats control of the Congress—disapprove of the job he is doing, 46% to the 41% who approve. In July, 49% of independents approved of the president, against 38% who disapproved.
New doubts about the president have coincided with new hopes for Republicans, who appeared flattened by the election nearly a year ago.
As the 2010 election cycle heats up, independent voters now favor Republican control of Congress by four percentage points.
“For a party walloped two cycles in a row with independents, I think those are very important stories,” said Bill McInturff, a partner at the Republican polling firm Public Opinion Strategies, who conducts the Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll with Democratic pollster Peter Hart.
His approval rating’s flat at 51 percent overall. More anti-statist backlash from the crosstabs: For the first time since 1997, more people say government is doing too many things rather than not doing enough (49/45) and more are worried about the exploding deficit than the need to “boost” the economy with new spending (62/30, up from 58/35 in June). This speaks for itself:

On health care, the best spin NBC can muster is that he’s up slightly from last month after his Beyond Thunderdome media blitz — but the gains are so slight as to be within the margin of error. A plurality still opposes the public option (46/48, up slightly from 43/47 in August but still down from 46/44 in July) and 59 percent say they’d either prefer or demand that a mandate to buy insurance not be included in the final bill.
And yet:

As loathsome as the left’s demagoguery of conservatives over health care has been, credit them with having convinced the public that it’s the GOP, not the warring between Blue Dogs and progressives, that’s stalled the bill in Congress.
The sample for the poll, by the way: 41 percent Democrat and just 29 percent Republican (if leaners are included). Exit question: Is there any real utility to tracking The One’s approval rating when it’s tied so heavily to the economic outlook? John Judis has a piece at TNR today reminding us that FDR and Reagan won huge reelection landslides not because the economy was in tiptop shape when the election was held but merely because it was improving after a long period of downturn. There’s no reason I can think of to suspect that things will be different for Obama. The difference between him and Reagan may simply be that it’ll take longer for that improvement to show than it did for the Gipper.

I would agree that it’s premature to take approval ratings too seriously.
However, there’s a problem now for Obama. He’s got MORE very liberal and very unpopular agenda items looming, including Cap-and-Trade, EFCA, and Immigration Reform.

And why might that be… I mean, the stimulus is working and everything. Right?

November 2010 is a long way away. Think of where we were in early Sept 2008…McCain/Palin were looking pretty good and that changed pretty quickly.
Time for the GOP to pivot and start advocating an agenda, similiar to the Contract with America in 1994. Being opposed and pointing out the lib’s flaws can only work for so long, after a while, it will begin to get diminishing returns. The GOP needs to give us a reason to vote FOR them, not just against the libs.

How can that many blame the GOP if it doesn’t pass? Do they not know of the healthy Dem majorities in Congress? You’d think they would, considering how much that was trumpeted following election day.

The so called ‘independents’ are no more than people who don’t hold any true belief in issues. They are concerned over process and personality more than core issues. That is why their opinions swings so much. At the time of the election, they felt ‘good’ about voting for a black man for President and the way he made them ‘feel’ when he spoke. Now that the sun as set on that, he comes across as colder, indecisive and less appealing.
That is why you see funny man go on Letterman and all the fluff shows because the way to win back the independents is to get them to ‘feel’ again and not focus on the issues.
Problem is, you cannot govern that way. You will always be chasing your tail. Governing is about making difficult decisions. Something BO has never done before and is finding impossible to do now.

My plan:
1. Southern border is “exit only” and only south swinging doors are installed.
2. Businesses who employ illegal aliens are turned over one by one, operations shut down, assets sold off to highest bidder, funds used for subsequent operations.
3. Social entitlements are halted–SS, medicaid, and all others for all illegal immigrants.
4. Mexican and Central American governments are given the opportunity to facilitate repatriation of their citizens who have entered US illegally.
5. Objectives 1-4 are pursued relentlessly for 6 mos
6. After 6 mos, any illegals who haven’t self-deported already either are given amnesty or deported outright based on their usefulness to this society.
7. All further immigration is handled directly through the normal channels and all laws enforced. Any further illegals noted in US after date xx/xx/xxxx are summarily deported.
that’s my flavor.

Lou Budvis on September 22, 2009 at 8:22 PM
Liberals are stupid for having blamed Republicans… But just like their “Do it for Teddy!!1!” nonsense, they have no idea what is or is not popular beyond their narrow pool of “Who voted for Nixon??” friends.
Lehosh on September 22, 2009 at 8:22 PM
The election of 2000 showed that good economic times don’t necessarily help the party in power. There are other issues. I think by 2012 people are going to know that Obama will raise middle class taxes to pay for his spending binge, regardless of how well the economy is growing. Ironically, a GOP controlled House could help him hold on to the presidency by impeding his agenda.
Mark1971 on September 22, 2009 at 8:23 PM
I always thought it sad that the future of the country was decided by the least informed and the ones that really don’t care that much about anything . I’d like to see a streamlined procedure. Make everyone get into line, but it can’t take 10 years and thousands of dollars.
Institute some quotas, but bump up the numbers. Not to an amnesty level.
Then implement an enforcement policy on work permits being required by employers that actually works.
Forget the big fence stuff. Forget rounding up people.
DO require ID for all arrests OR be turned over to Immigration authorities for deportation and or incarceration upon verification for all but felonies.
And I’d like to see people be polite about this topic when it comes up. That’s one discussion where the racism is virulent and offensive, truly.
How’s that for pie in the sky. LOL*

it’s easy to say “racism” when really it’s “law enforcement.”
We want people to immigrate, we need people to immigrate. But, it’s a threat to liberty to do it illegally. We want people with skills and know-how to do stuff, we have no use for welches who bleed off our tax funds, then bitch at us for not giving them more. What do we get in return? More bills.

That’s presuming that the economy will have improved in another three years.
I’d wager a tidy sum that it will not have.
And if they finally do lose their minds and push through garbage such as cap-and-trade (not to mention the myriad other ways they, meaning Obama and Democrats, they can screw things up further), I’d say that it’s almost a certainty that things will actually get precipitiously worse.
Vyce on September 22, 2009 at 9:21 PM
But Reagan’s policies were the reason the economy was improving. Everything Obama has done and likely will do(i.e. jack up taxes) is anathema to economic growth. And God help us if he gets anymore of his agenda through, then he’ll make thing even worse.
I said months ago and I still believe it today. Obama and the Dems thought the economy would fix itself. They honestly don’t believe the government can have a negative impact on the private sector. And now that things have gotten worse with plunging tax revenues and unemployment approaching double digits, they know they’re in a world of hurt. They can’t pass another stimulus bill. They’ll never lower taxes. And they’re even less likely to cut spending.
The strategy for Obama is…well, hope. Hope that the economy magically fixes itself in time for 2010 or at the very least 2012. But with hyperinflation and the commercial real estate bubble rearing their ugly heads, he’ll be doing a lot of praying.
Doughboy on September 22, 2009 at 9:23 PM
