John Fund: Let’s not forget Obama’s ACORN connections

posted at 2:58 pm on September 22, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama claimed that the latest scandal at ACORN had not really hit his radar screen during his “full Ginsburg” this weekend.  Perhaps Obama hoped that Americans would forget the extensive history he had with the community-organizing group, or at least develop amnesia about his partnership with them during the presidential election.  After all, Obama gave ACORN $800,000 to conduct get-out-the-vote work, which his campaign disclosed only reluctantly last summer.  John Fund reminds readers of these connections:

Only one of the five television networks that interviewed President Obama for their Sunday shows bothered to ask him about Acorn, the left-wing community organizing group whose federal funding was cut off last week by an overwhelming vote in Congress.

“Frankly, it’s not something I’ve followed closely,” Mr. Obama claimed, adding he wasn’t even aware the group had been the recipient of significant federal funding. “This is not the biggest issue facing the country. It’s not something I’m paying a lot of attention to,” he said. …

Mr. Obama took great pains to act as if he barely knew about Acorn. In fact, his association goes back almost 20 years. In 1991, he took time off from his law firm to run a voter-registration drive for Project Vote, an Acorn partner that was soon fully absorbed under the Acorn umbrella. The drive registered 135,000 voters and was considered a major factor in the upset victory of Democrat Carol Moseley Braun over incumbent Democratic Senator Alan Dixon in the 1992 Democratic Senate primary.

Mr. Obama’s success made him a hot commodity on the community organizing circuit. He became a top trainer at Acorn’s Chicago conferences. In 1995, he became Acorn’s attorney, participating in a landmark case to force the state of Illinois to implement the federal Motor Voter Law. That law’s loose voter registration requirements would later be exploited by Acorn employees in an effort to flood voter rolls with fake names.

Obama can head for the high grass, as Fund puts it, but he won’t find much cover there.  They’ve been hitting the road hard for his ObamaCare effort, as well as for Obama administration programs for housing assistance.  ACORN has positioned itself as Obama’s political ground troops since the campaign, and the connections cannot be easily dismissed.

Read all of Fund’s column.

From Fund’s article:

The Obama campaign also gave Citizens Consulting, Inc., an Acorn subsidiary, $832,000 for get-out-the-vote activities in key primary states.

On Hannity last night, Dick Morris said that at about the same time that Obama’s campaign made this contribution, ACORN owed the IRS for unpaid taxes (I think he said employment taxes (FICA withholding and contributions and FUTA contributiosn, which would mean ACORN was screwing its employees).

Anybody heard anything about this?

Then, I think BOR reported last night that the IRS slapped a lien on ACORN’s New Orleans headquarters for $500K of unpaid taxes (again, I think he specifically said employment taxes).

Anybody heard anything about this?

Well at least we know now that Sarah Palin was totally wrong when she said community organizers have no responsibility. They have lots of responsibility, like teaching people about taxes, and how not to pay them. How to bring illegal children into this country for great work opportunities, like prostitution. And how to set up new businesses, like pimping, and how to keep your pimp hand strong.

Liberal organizations like ACORN avoid metrics like the plague, fearing that they might have a price to pay for lack of performance.

There’s a certain poetic justice in the fact that ACORN will now be buried without being able to produce any metrics that might show how beneficial it’s been to the unfortunate.

We are watching a Marxist coup evolve before our eyes and the “Despot-in-chief” is at the tiller……

I disagree. I believe that there are more converts to our side with each of Obama’s lies and new media revelations. A lot of Americans who voted for Obama because they believed him are realizing that they made a mistake. It is not easy to realize that you made a mistake, and different people have different thresholds for arriving at that conclusion. The drip drip drip of this, with an occasional flood, will result in a continuous stream of switches.

I saw this coming:

Democrat Scott Harshbarger, a lawyer whose specialties include corporate governance, will conduct the internal investigation. ACORN said the review would be “aggressive, thorough and far-reaching.”

Scott Harshbarger was Massachusetts attorney general in the 1990s. He is an attorney in Boston with the law firm Proskauer Rose LLP, where his specialties include corporate governance and corporate defense and investigations.

In other words, an expert at cover ups.

She and the organization need to be skewered by things that bring outraged reactions from the public. I don’t understand why the IRS exempt organizations division isn’t flooding in to review the public-charity status of ACORN and its affiliates. I’m unclear about which of them have that status, and she needs to prove those vaunted “firewalls” between the public-charity affiliates and the non-public-charity affiliates exist and function.

UnderstandingisPower on September 22, 2009 at 3:07 PM

Never mentioned the word conspiracy idiot. Looked like voter intimidation to me and I believe the public should have clearly been informed on the results of any investigation. The integrity of the electoral system is central to maintaining public confidence in a democracy, but that’s right liberal a-holes don’t really care about democracy anyway.

Run for the hills, ACORNS biggest supporter Decider is here!

bluegrass on September 22, 2009 at 4:01 PM

Supporter? Right. I had never heard of ACORN before until the last few weeks. I could care less about ACORN. ACORN is nothing to me or anyone in the US except the 18% of the Right that are trying to get to Obama by any means necessary. It is a non-issue and non-story.

When will they drain that damn swamp?

The alligators won’t eat dirty democrats.

bluegrass on September 22, 2009 at 4:05 PM

That’s going to leave a mark!

Look I can do the same thing: Bush is Haliburton. Haliburton is Bush. George Bush can no more disown Haliburton than he could disown his own shadow.

Did it stick?

Decider on September 22, 2009 at 3:57 PM

Bush is the world’s largest and most capable oil services company? Yeah, it’s possible that might never “stick.”

Barak Obama is an utterly corrupt political machine… Dude, trust me, that one’s got some legs on it.

You’re forgetting the one little detail that liberals can never comprehend: reality. You can fight it for a while, but it will always eventually bite you in the ass. It’s only a question of how long you can stave it off.

Obama Doodle went to Washington town
A-riding on an Acorn Pony
Stuck a feather in his cap
And called any charges of connection to ACORN, racism baloney

Obama Doodle, keep it up
Obama Doodle dandy
Mind the music and the step
And with the ACORN criminals walk hand in handy

Obama Doodle’s got a new AG
Working day and night to keep away the light
Armed with plenty of his favorite Chicago crew
To all the country’s criminal’s delight

Obama Doodle, keep it up
Obama Doodle dandy
Mind the music and the step
And with the ACORN Criminals walk hand in handy

MB4 on September 22, 2009 at 4:09 PM

Before all this started, there were investigations in 15 states into ACORN’s activities. I wonder how many more will sign on now? California and NY have also launched investigations in recent days.

As an old time vaudeville actor once said ” IS EVERYBODY HAPPPPPPPPY?

bluegrass on September 22, 2009 at 4:11 PM

That’s right. Any time you write “ACORN” write Obama and SEIU.

Obama is ACORN/SEIU, ACORN/SEIU is Obama. Obama can no more disown ACORN/SEIU than he can his own shadow.

(Grandma and the black community were already thrown under the bus when he fake disowned Rev. Wright.) Hmmm, I wonder if he just moved him to another Soros organization like Yosi Sargent, Samantha Powers and Van Jones. Just a thought.

His administration doesn’t fire people, he just moves them around.

TriciaNC on September 22, 2009 at 4:12 PM

It is a non-issue and non-story.

Decider on September 22, 2009 at 4:05 PM

So you think it’s fine for an organization that has received tens of millions of taxpayer dollars, to advise people (on camera) on how to cheat on their taxes.

Glad you could join us Congressman, how are your destitute, drugged out, illiterate constituents doing?

NoDonkey on September 22, 2009 at 4:12 PM

I’m unclear about which of them have that status, and she needs to prove those vaunted “firewalls” between the public-charity affiliates and the non-public-charity affiliates exist and function.

BuckeyeSam on September 22, 2009 at 3:42 PM

Me too. I think Issa was driving at the shuffling of funds between 501c(3) and 501c(4) units which both exist under the ACORN umbrella. If firewalls exist, they are being ignored.
