Jimmy Carter: Bush may have been behind anti-Chavez coup

Another moment of lunacy from this nation’s biggest Oval Office mistake of the 20th century — which may be akin to saying “water is still wet,” but we should be keeping a tally.  While in Colombia, former President Jimmy Carter told an interviewer that the Bush administration “could have been involved” in the 2002 coup attempt against Venezuelan wanna-be dictator Hugo Chavez.  Dan Calabrese unloads on America’s worst ex-president:

On Sunday, Jimmeh told the Colombian newspaper El Tiempo that he believes the Bush Administration was likely behind a coup against Hugo Chavez in 2002 in Venezuela.

“I think there is no doubt that in 2002, the United States had at the very least full knowledge about the coup, and could even have been directly involved,” said the man whose favorite pastime these days is to huddle up with anti-American thugs.

This got picked up immediately by Iranian state media, of course, which has plenty of reasons to air this allegation.  The Iranians want to paint the US as hostile as well as justify its attempts to bolster Chavez in Venezuela.  Having an American ex-president give credence to Chavez’ paranoid conspiracy theories plays into memes propagated by leftists throughout Latin America and undermines American influence.

Oddly, they also repeated this rather belated observation of Chavez by our nation’s most clueless former executive:

However, Carter says Chavez is now consolidating political power, making it “almost impossible” for the Obama administration to establish friendly relations with Venezuela.

“International relations would be better if he [Chavez] would stop his attacks and insults against the United States,” according to the former US leader.

He also said he was worried by the Venezuelan president’s drift towards “authoritarianism.”

Drift?  Chavez has nationalized the oil industry, installed a puppet parliament, and rigged elections designed to make him president for life.  He has openly patterned himself after the region’s most successful totalitarians, the Castro brothers in Cuba, and has provided funding for leftist terrorists in neighboring Colombia.  That’s not a drift, that’s a march in double time, just like the march of Soviets into Afghanistan that this nuclear engineer managed to miss in his administration.

There’s only one word for a former US president who goes abroad to bolster the worst conspiracy theories about our country: despicable.  That’s nothing new for Carter, either.

We should stop calling him Ex-president Carter and just refer to him as the anti-semite hack from Georgia. The next time he steps onto foreign soil and says treasonous, anti- American things he should be immediatly arrested upon his return to our soil. He should have been arrested when he traveled to Gaza and kissed up to Hamas when Pres. Bush told him specifically not to.
He and Obama are a clear and present danger to the United States. The same goes when Obama return from his unconstitutional trip to lead the UN security council. If he gives away any of our defences or comprimises us in any way he should be charged and brought up for impeachment when he returns. The American peoples patients with these marxist pigs are at an end. We were just all crazy when the Dixie Chicks said what they did about Bush on foreign soil, they still have not recovered in the country music world, but we all ignore this from our so called leaders and ex leaders. NO MORE, ENOUGH!

Neither does Clinton, who handed his successor the 9/11 attacks and then tried to squelch the investigation by smuggling his former Assistant Attorney General onto the “9/11 Commission”. In reality, she should have been questioned by that Commission under oath.

He deserves no respect.

That’s a position that I personally reject. Bush deserves respect. Bush Sr. deserves respect. Clinton deserves respect. Carter deserves respect.

Frankly, I question the stability of people when they cannot at least admit that the office of the presidency deserves respect, regardless of political persuasion.

There’s something “off-kilter” about that, whether you’re a lefty or a righty.

Gosh, I think this notion that they should go off and do only good works is rather silly.

But I also think that taking their words/ideas too seriously is equally silly.

Perspective provides the boundaries. Carter is way old, been out of the loop for years. But he’s entitled to his opinion. Goodness gracious, how would any of US feel being told to hold our fingers. We’re the epitome of opinions here.

Politicians. What can you say? They aren’t particularly accurate with their words. I agree. Drifting was goofy. But I look at the guy’s age and just give him the same elbow room I gave my own aging family members.

I noticed they get into ruts of thinking around that age. You can’t move them out of it. Whatever nuance or sharpness they had…dissapates.

Respect is when we all pretend not to notice the failings.

That’s all. We just pretend he’s making sense. (I don’t mean on blogs, by the way. Nobody cares if you guys call him names.)

I just mean publicly, you hope the administration says, “no comment” when it’s bizarre.

Ann, I do have a question for you. You don’t have to answer it. The answer just gives me a beeter feel about the moral code they want to be known for.

This is a man with still huge international influence…unlimited damage can be done by just “ignoring” him.
When he falsely stated that we had tortured kids in Iraq, that sent shock waves, and it made it so much easier for AQ to recruit…when he cozied up to Chavez, that had consequences in the world.

The problem with your analysis is that the media treats him as an elder statesman whose opinion carries tremendous weight. They find him uber “relevant.” If they were covering his treason as “Oh, here comes another nutty comment from everyone’s favorite crazy uncle Jimmy” (kind of like they cover Joe Biden), that would be fine. But his increasingly bizarre and deranged behavior is still covered as though he were playing with a full deck, which he clearly is not. “Tolerance” is called for when everyone involved admits that Jimmy is in some stage of dementia. So long as he’s being trotted out as a man operating with the full range of mental capacity, no tolerance is called for, only condemnation of his wholly un-statesman-like behavior. We’ll show tolerance when it’s finally revealed that Jimmy is mentally ill, and the media stops using his obvious illness to further its leftist agenda.

Ann, I tend to agree with you about respecting the office of the presidency but Carter constantly creates a dilemna with his comments. In this latest example, Carter himself doesn’t show a lot of respect for the office when W was making decisions…does he? And it isn’t just isolated to W either. As I am sure you know, he undermined Clinton on occasion too.

So when he continually plays this game, he’s not living up to the standard you just set for us mere civilians to follow. Does he just a get a pass for it because we were foolish enough to elect him? I’d argue Carter constantly doesn’t show respect for the office himself, and it makes it much, much worse to me that he was our President once himself and yet still says these things.

You know, it’s kind of funny, this. Bush was behind the attempted coup against Chavez? Here’s a crazy suggestion that is ultimately more plausible: Chavez faked the coup against himself.

Think about it. Cui bono? How many people would have had to know to carry out the fake coup? Why, just Chavez and his generals. The generals that “overthrew” him, and then reinstated him later, and continue to serve under him. Does that sound kind of odd?

If the media does not notice, if he is still someone people want to have their picture with, if no official part of government will restrict his travel, if, in short, no one else in society has imposed any consequences at all on him, what can I expect will be done about him or any other high government official that harms our country as part of living out their viewpoint? Nobody deserves respect, it is earned, and can be lost.
Carter earned a modicum of respect by being an ex-president. When he started travelling the world and using his position to attack his predecessors, he lost the respect that he had earned.

Try reading “Reagan, in His Own Hand”…you will be shocked, and he could have been one of the last to actually understand “penmanship”, as many of his personal notes and messages were handwritten, and art being lost.

It is amazing how naive, and simple her beliefs are…I guess that is how liberals survive, hoping others will take up the slack and protect them or teach them…very strange.

You’re speaking with some ordinary habitual, dyed-in-the-wool Democrat-for-life. Not hard to find, especially in urbs. All nice-enough people. They work. They like to be thought of as nice people (part of the problem.) Carter comes up in the conversation and you roll your eyes and say something relatively mild like, “Carter is the cause of most of our current trouble.” They say, “Oh he wasn’t so bad.” “Oh, the Shah was a tyrant.” (Direct quotes.) In other words, among the Ds, he gets this much respect, and if you look one step further, you’ll find actual Carter-lovers.

These are otherwise normal people with an affliction in one isolated area, the political center of their brains. Insanity.

Here’s a sober analysis that was written before this latest Peanut brouhaha.

Former U.S. presidents should not speak out against a current president. They occupy a unique position among retired elected officials: that of having occupied the most powerful and difficult job ever.

Having endured criticism, second guessing and in charge of the vast domestic and foreign policy apparatus of our country, former Presidents have first-hand experience and are a vital resource to presiding presidents.

When former presidents begin to carp and publicly criticize their successors, they put politics above public service.

Former U.S. presidents have traditionally followed an unwritten protocol: By virtue of their prior experience in the office, they know what the current occupier faces and have traditionally refrained from public criticism of sitting presidents.

That unwritten protocol where former presidents do not criticize the current chief executive has mostly been honored. Two exceptions, former Presidents Carter and Clinton, have arisen where these two Democrats have put party politics above their traditional role of “elder statesmen.”

There are two other reasons why a former U.S. president should remain publicly silent in any criticism of a current president. In the first place, criticizing the incumbent of an office one once held somehow lacks class and dignity.

In the second place, the perpetrator of the criticism may have no room to criticize, given his (and hopefully someday her) own record in the area of criticism.

For example, when former President Carter criticizes his Republican successor in the area of foreign policy, it brings to mind the old saying about not throwing stones if one lives in a glass house.

In its way, the White House is also made of glass. The sitting President is under constant scrutiny and should be able to rely on frank advice from those who served before him.

That advice should be from the perspective of a former leader of all the American people and should not be tainted by narrow, partisan considerations.

Any former president who speaks out against a current president immediately becomes “persona non grata” in the glass halls of power and forfeits his special status and value to our country.

Carter, a universally acknowledged one-term disaster, who won’t STFU, is to respected and yet Reagan, a two-term success, who won the cold war is somehow a dolt.

Carter is in my opinion way passed the point of no return. His comments and actions since he left office have only served to hurt American international and domestic interests. His views are so distorted and vile that one has to wonder if he has some sort of mental illness that has been kept from the public’s knowledge.

I would normally agree with some, that all past Presidents should be respected out of the sheer fact that they held the nation’s top position. However in recent times (as noted by Del Dolemonte on September 21, 2009 at 3:58 PM and a few others) have shown that part of decorum in American politics are behind us.
I believe at this point his comments are intentionally treacherous and only serve to further damage this nation.

I honestly wouldn’t suggest going down that path, given Reagan really was subjected to that illness.

It was sad to admit this, but I do think he suffered from symptoms way before people even admitted.

I would NEVER criticize Reagan on those grounds. That’s truly dispicable.

If you believe that, I would hope you agree that Carter should be called in to a “Post-Chavez” Venezuela for crimes against the Venezuelan people. By purposely validating a fradulant election, he played a hand in allowing a murderous regime to remain in power and murder hundreds (if not thousands) of their own citizens. That to me seems pretty darn criminal…
