NFL Week 2 open thread
posted at 10:00 am on September 20, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Well, I’m already feeling pretty darned good today, after Notre Dame’s escape from Michigan State yesterday, beating them at home for the first time since 1993. The game looked like it would be a replay from last week’s stunning loss in Michigan, but fortunately the Irish blitz panicked the Spartan QB into a bad decision at the end. I’m feeling so fortunate that I’m going to go out on a limb and … predict that the Steelers can beat the Bears today. All right, it’s not so much of a limb, not after the Jay Cutler era began in Chicago with four interceptions against a good-not-great Green Bay defense. I’ll pick the Steelers on the road 27-10, with Troy Polamalu’s absence for Pittsburgh hurting less than Brian Urlacher’s for Chicago.
Other picks to delight, annoy, and amuse:
- Minnesota – Detroit: Will Detroit win a game this year? Probably, but not this one. Vikings 28-7 over the Lions.
- Cincinnati – Green Bay: I think Cincinnati will be better this year than last, but Green Bay’s tough. They’ll make it close, but the Packers should beat the Bengals, 24-21. Tough way to start for the Bengals, with two road games. Didn’t the NFL think about their season last year?
- NY Giants – Dallas: The home opener for the Cowboys in their brand-new stadium. I’m hoping the Giants shellack them there, but the Giants barely got by a mediocre Redskins last week after opening up a big early lead. I’ll pick Dallas here by a TD, 35-28, but this may be the best game of the day.
- Carolina – Atlanta: I thought Carolina and Jake Delhomme would have shaken off what happened in the playoffs last year, but instead they gave Philly an encore last week. Atlanta isn’t as good as Philly, but they won’t need to be if the Panthers play like they did at home in their opener. I’m going to pick Atlanta, 23-14.
- New England – NY Jets: Mark Sanchez was impressive in his first week, and he plays at home against the Patriots. The Pats barely beat the Bills at home last week, and it took a really boneheaded decision by the Bills kick returner to deliver it. Tom Brady may shake off the rust, but the Pats defense looked a little suspect, too. I’ll pick the Jets to win this one in a surprise, 27-21.
I forgot the Steelers widget last week, but I won’t forget it this week. What are your picks?
Update: I also forgot to mention that I was 6-0 last week with my picks. Can’t remember the last time that happened …
Update II: I bet Rick Moran, and he won. The Steelers blew two field goal attempts in the final quarter and lost by three. That’s not going to win championships. The Bears looked much better today; my hat’s off to Cutler, who looked as good today as he looked bad last week.

Larry Allen is out?
BallisticBob on September 20, 2009 at 9:02 PM
Never mind.
BallisticBob on September 20, 2009 at 9:03 PM
Well, that interception was typical Romo. That sort of thing is why the Cowboys missed the playoffs last year.
Personally, I think if Romo plays that way this year, the Cowboys need to make other long-term plans for QB. And, yes, I thought that since last season.
WannabeAnglican on September 20, 2009 at 9:05 PM
I will refrain from commenting at this point.
Willie on September 20, 2009 at 9:07 PM

Willie on September 20, 2009 at 9:17 PM
As a Chargers fan, I’ll give you 5 seconds to run…
FontanaConservative on September 20, 2009 at 9:23 PM
Great! Brisket smoked for 10 hours, chicken smoked for 5, sausage, tater salad, red beans……..
I’m too stuffed to move, wish you had been here!
conservnut on September 20, 2009 at 9:23 PM
Still here. Not running. :-P
artchick on September 20, 2009 at 9:25 PM

DA BEARS!
(Will that get me banned?)
michaelo on September 20, 2009 at 9:30 PM
Actually, I think anything will get you banned right now. So I am not worrying about it!
conservnut on September 20, 2009 at 9:32 PM
I like Ed a lot. I dislike the Steelers a lot.
Am I sad Ed had to EAT his subtitle for lunch. Um, no.
Danzo on September 20, 2009 at 9:35 PM
It’s great to see all the old heros on the field again.
conservnut on September 20, 2009 at 9:55 PM
Romo does it again with a terrible throw.
WannabeAnglican on September 20, 2009 at 9:55 PM
they should give the Giants a TD b/c nobody would have stopped Phillips b/c he walked in the endzone.
lavell12 on September 20, 2009 at 9:57 PM
Romo is killing me tonight!
conservnut on September 20, 2009 at 9:58 PM
I agree he probably would have made it anyway. But once the whistle blows it’s over, no matter what.
conservnut on September 20, 2009 at 9:59 PM
Damnit, talk about the ball bouncing the wrong way for us tonight!
conservnut on September 20, 2009 at 10:01 PM
In response to Ed’s gracious concession, let me offer an equally sportsmanlike response:
Ha haha ha ha!
GO BEARS!
Actually, honestly I was surprised as well. Badass.
galenrox on September 20, 2009 at 10:10 PM
Yay Bears!!!!
blr2449 on September 20, 2009 at 10:12 PM
You guys think we can come up with a way to patch up the relationship between Tony Romo and Jessica Simpson?
Somethings wrong with that boy!
conservnut on September 20, 2009 at 10:19 PM
Did the Cowboys forget how to tackle at halftime? Geez.
WannabeAnglican on September 20, 2009 at 10:27 PM
Wow. 29 yd FG missed. Cowboys got lucky there.
WannabeAnglican on September 20, 2009 at 10:30 PM
Yeah, and did you see that jackass Phillips cheering? He should be pissed that they were down there to start with!
conservnut on September 20, 2009 at 10:32 PM
BRONCOS Looked good (kinda) and shoulda won by 35.
Denver 2-0
.
.
You can have Cutler, he’s not only a jerk, but inconsistent as all get out. Good Luck. hehe
shooter on September 20, 2009 at 10:42 PM
Now THAT was a tackle. Newman did a great job to stop the Giants drive. Looks like that interference call ticked him off.
WannabeAnglican on September 20, 2009 at 10:46 PM
Why oh dear god why… The humanities… Why do they include Olberman?
I feel bad for Costas and crew have to listen this sputtering J@ck@ass butcher what they do for a living and have to smile their way through it like they are appeasing the not so bright kid to encourage him to learn self esteem.
Football is pure, its my happy place, NBC could ruin a w3t dr3@m
@ntif@n on September 20, 2009 at 10:48 PM
The Cowboys offensive line is scary good at times. Lots of time for Romo. HUGE holes for the running backs.
WannabeAnglican on September 20, 2009 at 10:52 PM
They were on it there. Romo just walked in.
conservnut on September 20, 2009 at 11:02 PM
. . . and yet Romo manages to eff it up . . . again.
WannabeAnglican on September 20, 2009 at 11:05 PM
Go-go girls at a football game. Looks like they have everything at that stadium.
Mallard T. Drake on September 20, 2009 at 11:12 PM
51 points. Have the offenses been that good or the defenses that bad?
Mallard T. Drake on September 20, 2009 at 11:12 PM
This is funny, I click on Hotair today right before I go to watch the Bears and the Steelers and I see “Steelers keep rolling”. I thought Ed was writing that the Steelers had won.
I still watched the game and expected the Bears to lose. When they WON, I was shocked. Then I came back here and saw that it was only a prediction!
Da Bears got it done today.
B Man on September 20, 2009 at 11:20 PM
When did we get to the point where players celebrate every single play. Stopped for no gain and the defensive player celebrates. Break a hard 8 yard run and the back celebrates. How about actually doing something special before bothering to celebrate.
Mallard T. Drake on September 20, 2009 at 11:20 PM
Whichever team has the ball last wins.
Mallard T. Drake on September 20, 2009 at 11:30 PM
I’m with you Mallard. I hate that lowlife crap.
WannabeAnglican on September 20, 2009 at 11:30 PM
Wow. If the Giants can kick the FG to win, they will be LUCKY. That 3rd and 4 completion was deflected all over the place and yet went straight to a receiver.
Looks like that and Romo has done the Cowboys in.
WannabeAnglican on September 20, 2009 at 11:44 PM
Awesome. The are playing “The Final Countdown” on the stadium PA. Wheres Gob Bloom?
Mallard T. Drake on September 20, 2009 at 11:45 PM
Oh man, I hate this. These time-outs right before the ball is snapped ought to be outlawed. I now hate Wade Phillips. That is such unsporting crap.
WannabeAnglican on September 20, 2009 at 11:46 PM
Giants had the ball last, and they win: 33-31.
Mallard T. Drake on September 20, 2009 at 11:47 PM
I’m so ticked at Wade Phillips, I’m GLAD the Giants made the winning FG TWICE. Congrats to the Giants.
WannabeAnglican on September 20, 2009 at 11:47 PM
as a redskins fan, all i can say is Hail to the Giants. and so sweet: final second on the opening night of jerry jones monument to himself. hail.
kelley in virginia on September 20, 2009 at 11:53 PM
Or “fail.”
Mallard T. Drake on September 20, 2009 at 11:54 PM
that, too, mallard.
kelley in virginia on September 21, 2009 at 12:02 AM
Matt Hasselbeck hurt his ribs, not his back. That is good news for the Seahawks. He should be back in a week or so.
The Jim Mora Show is on and they keep showing the Frank Gore runs. Enough already. We get it.
Mallard T. Drake on September 21, 2009 at 12:26 AM
Well that sucked, Romo was a big disappointment. That game had all the glitz of a playoff, I am beginning to believe the hype that he can’t win the big one.
conservnut on September 21, 2009 at 6:45 AM
When a running back becomes only the second player in NFL history to have two TD runs over 70 yds in the same game, (Barry Sanders was the last one to do this), and a young 49er team defeats their second divison foe in a row, this is called “football news”—-something, (with all due respect), fans and sportscasters in the east tend to overlook on a weekly basis. Sometimes “you east-coasters” forget there’s real estate west of the Missouri River.
As a 49er “faithful” since the dog days at Kezar Stadium, this is considered fun for some of us who yearn for the return of the 80′s when Montana and Co. dominated the league for more than a decade. Had enough already? :)
Rovin on September 21, 2009 at 7:25 AM
GO GIANTS!
Maningham for president!
:D
oldernwiser on September 21, 2009 at 7:48 AM
Bengals!!
Osis on September 21, 2009 at 7:50 AM
Not only does Romo not win the big one; he blows the big one. If Romo just hands it off and not make big mistakes, Dallas beats NY big. Romo kept NY in that game.
WannabeAnglican on September 21, 2009 at 8:39 AM
Detroit did some impressive things in the first half. Kept the Vikings Defense guessing with a lot of misdirection. Reverses, draws, screens and counters worked well for the first half.
Stanford looks like a winner.
Detroit will win some games this year, maybe 3 or 4.
jpmn on September 21, 2009 at 10:45 AM
Detroit will win some games this year, maybe 3 or 4.
jpmn on September 21, 2009
The first team to lose to Detroit this year will never hear the end of it.
Next 4 games: Washington, Chicago, Pittsburgh and Green Bay. Which of those do you think Detroit can beat?
SKYFOX on September 21, 2009 at 12:34 PM
BTW, jpmn, I’m not slamming Detroit. I just think they have a really tough row to hoe.
SKYFOX on September 21, 2009 at 12:35 PM
Detroit can win any of them. I am not saying they will win all but they will probably win one. The most likely is Washington.
I am not a Lions fan. I just like the way they played the first half against the Vikes. If they can play like that for sixty minutes they will win some games.
