NFL Week 2 open thread

posted at 10:00 am on September 20, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Well, I’m already feeling pretty darned good today, after Notre Dame’s escape from Michigan State yesterday, beating them at home for the first time since 1993. The game looked like it would be a replay from last week’s stunning loss in Michigan, but fortunately the Irish blitz panicked the Spartan QB into a bad decision at the end. I’m feeling so fortunate that I’m going to go out on a limb and … predict that the Steelers can beat the Bears today. All right, it’s not so much of a limb, not after the Jay Cutler era began in Chicago with four interceptions against a good-not-great Green Bay defense. I’ll pick the Steelers on the road 27-10, with Troy Polamalu’s absence for Pittsburgh hurting less than Brian Urlacher’s for Chicago.

Other picks to delight, annoy, and amuse:

  • Minnesota – Detroit: Will Detroit win a game this year?  Probably, but not this one.  Vikings 28-7 over the Lions.
  • Cincinnati – Green Bay: I think Cincinnati will be better this year than last, but Green Bay’s tough.  They’ll make it close, but the Packers should beat the Bengals, 24-21.  Tough way to start for the Bengals, with two road games.  Didn’t the NFL think about their season last year?
  • NY Giants – Dallas: The home opener for the Cowboys in their brand-new stadium.  I’m hoping the Giants shellack them there, but the Giants barely got by a mediocre Redskins last week after opening up a big early lead.  I’ll pick Dallas here by a TD, 35-28, but this may be the best game of the day.
  • Carolina – Atlanta: I thought Carolina and Jake Delhomme would have shaken off what happened in the playoffs last year, but instead they gave Philly an encore last week.  Atlanta isn’t as good as Philly, but they won’t need to be if the Panthers play like they did at home in their opener.  I’m going to pick Atlanta, 23-14.
  • New England – NY Jets: Mark Sanchez was impressive in his first week, and he plays at home against the Patriots.  The Pats barely beat the Bills at home last week, and it took a really boneheaded decision by the Bills kick returner to deliver it.  Tom Brady may shake off the rust, but the Pats defense looked a little suspect, too.  I’ll pick the Jets to win this one in a surprise, 27-21.

I forgot the Steelers widget last week, but I won’t forget it this week. What are your picks?

Update: I also forgot to mention that I was 6-0 last week with my picks. Can’t remember the last time that happened …

Update II: I bet Rick Moran, and he won.  The Steelers blew two field goal attempts in the final quarter and lost by three.  That’s not going to win championships.   The Bears looked much better today; my hat’s off to Cutler, who looked as good today as he looked bad last week.

Blowback

GO STEELERS!

Troy is out but the Bears have more injury problems.

Ben is just a little better than Cutler /s

Seahawks may allow some points this week as they beat the 49ers in SF. Seahawks getting revenge over the Steelers in the Super Bowl would suit me just fine.

Will the Steelers have OBAMA 08 Playing?

I liked that bunch till their owner, long a comrade of local Demoron machine pols in the city and county, had to come out on a nationa stage and support The One. Like anyone cares about what he and his family of Kennedy wannabes thinks. And plugging The One as he accepted the Lombardi trophy was…priceless.

Although the clan has been wonderful in many ways over the years. And I mean that.

Anyway, the Bears play well against ‘the guys from a dying town with a defunct industry they still identify with’. They manhandled the Steelers in a memorable game before Singletary’s retirement. Really manhandled.

Big Ben may leave the game today. He’ll go down like Obamacare one of thses weeks. I just wish that the owner played QB. Ever notice how infrequently libs are on the firing line?

If after four weeks the Steelers, or anyone else for that matter, are still winning, then we can talk of this ‘roll’ you speak of.

Jets always play New England tough. I think Ed is right on this pick.

Wish I could see that Saints-Iggles game, should be fun to watch, but it’s blacked out here in New England due to the Pats game. Rush Limbaugh had a caller Friday who was a Saints fan from the paper bag days, and he mentioned a Drew Brees sports video that is nothing short of amazing.

•Minnesota – Detroit: Will Detroit win a game this year? Probably, but not this one. Vikings 28-7 over the Lions.

The only reason the score will be low is because the Vikings will enjoy pounding the ball with AP.

Expect Percy Harvin to be NFL ROY if he stays healthy. That dude is the total package.

LFRGary on September 20, 2009 at 10:49 AM

The Jets won last week with a rookie quarterback against a very vanilla Houston defense. The result was a Sanchez who looked better than he played. Regardless of what folks WANT to see, he’s still a rookie QB, and he’s about to face off against a top-10 defense. We’ll see how that plays out.

FWIW, The Jets are 3-13 against New England, with their 3 wins coming AT New England. The Patriots haven’t lost in the Meadowlands to the Jets since Belichick took over as head coach.

The AFC East is always a dogfight, and the games between the four teams in the division are always closer than what folks would think, because of the familiarity of the teams to each other.

I don’t see New England losing to the Jets, although it might be closer than some would think. :)

So true. Sanchez is still a rookie going up against a much tougher defense. Meanwhile, the Bills really impressed with their D last week. I doubt the Jets can match that D. I think the Patriots will have a relatively easy time of it today.

Maybe Arizona can win today. That’ll be nice, but they have issues this year. I hope they figure them out fast!

Well let’s see Rooneys are predominately scum backers, Urlacher from the Bears, 100%, so he’s a scum bag.
Most coaches for the NFL seem GOP. My teams doesn’t list the coach, and as for owners, there’s thousands of them to ask.

Jeff from WI on September 20, 2009 at 10:57 AM

Steelers! and did you see Snuggleupagus argue with TOTUS on when an ins mandate is a tax? LOL!! See here

ginaswo on September 20, 2009 at 10:57 AM

Players?

I didn’t see any players shilling for The One after the SB, and, if they did, they would get fined.

The Steeler owner had no business treating us to his lame political views after the SB. Let him buy commercial time with the billions made from his antitrust protected business.

And, WTF does the political persuasion of the players have to do with anything?

I think The One should nationalize the NFL teams (without compensation) and give them to the black community as reparations. Like the labor unions say, the workers really built the league! I wonder if Rooney and Steeler ownership would support that.

The Bills always play tough. back in ’04, they beat New England 31-0 on opening day, at home. The two teams, though, went their separate ways, with the Patriots beating the Bill by an identical 31-0 to end the season, and then winning the superbowl.

The Bills also famously played the Cowboys on another big Monday Night Football game a couple years ago, leading through the game until the end when they lost in the final seconds to a Dallas field goal.

The Bills have some excellent athletes and some good schemes, but suffer from a moderate QB and poor coaching.

The Jets, Patriots, Bills and Dolphins always play eachother hard and tough, and there is rarely a blowout game between any of them. I still expect New England to win the division, but the Jets might also make the playoffs as a wild card team.

However, it’s only week 2, and 14 more to go. A better sense will come by week 5 or 6 of how the division will sort itself out.

Gotta call you out there, son.

If you have any proof that New England ever cheated, then you ought to post it here for all to see.

The reason I say that is because NO ONE in the NFL, not the league head office, not any coach, not any official, ever accused them of cheating.

New England broke a rule in the NFL Operations Manual, NOT the game rules, as to where a video camera could be placed. There is no rule against taping the other team, their signals, etc. It just didn’t happen, and no one in any official office ever said or claimed that New England ever gained an unfair advantage during a game because of that infraction.

While it might be an easy way to soothe a frightened countenance, or to cushion the understanding that your own team hasn’t won it all for four decades, it simply isn’t true that New England cheated.

Da Bearz will play better this week. They really ought to hire a teetotaler for their quarterback, though. It’s one of the great ironies of recent NFL history that the best quarterback da Bearz (Jim McMahon) is about the only BYU alumnus in recorded history to have a drinking problem.

Meanwhile, my beloved Packers will win, but it will be closer than I’d like. The big questions:

1) Will Chad Ochocinco score?
2) Will he really try to do a Lambeau Leap, as he has promised?
3) If he does, will he come back with all limbs attached?

You forget that ol’ Arlen is a Senator from Pennsylvania, home to two teams the Patriots have regularly beaten. He was also going after the NFL after it refused to cave to ComCast’s demands for more money for carrying the NFL Network. Folks seem to forget that both ComCast and their Legal Counsel are in the top 5 donors to Arlen’s campaigns.

Arlen needed face time on TV, and he got it. You’ll note, too, that although he did a lot of talking, nothing came of it.

The Pats are something like OJ Simpson…we all KNOW he did it, but lack that actual “proof”, even tho the evidence is all around…and damaging.

Belicheat’s Pats consistently won more games than their stats showed they should. And the NFL wanted this whole thing to go away…that’s why the tapes were destroyed and nothing more than fines were imposed.

Respect to you as well, but the evidence is all around that New England had a history of cheating. They got busted. And the NFL kept it as much on the down low as possible.

Belichick needs to sue the NFL. He did not cheat and was fined the highest fine against a coach ever.

So someday, if you win the Super Bowl, but get caught doing it can they switch the Lombardi trophy to the Belichick trophy?

Jeff from WI on September 20, 2009 at 12:15 PM

When you lose the Super Bowl you get the Bud Grant Trophy

Jeff from WI on September 20, 2009 at 12:16 PM

Cindy, I love your postings, but it is a pretty offensive nickname… If you were at work and used it to describe a group of Native Americans sitting in the lunch room, you’d get fired… Or undergo sensitivity training and come back like “Decider”…

I’m just saying…

Why should we Redskins be offended, they let some of us live.

When it comes to this topic, the New England-haters behave exactly like Leftist Democrats-they toss all logic out the door and rely solely on emotion.

Del Dolemonte on September 20, 2009 at 12:52 PM

Khun Joe….know the state of American business and our PC world one may well be fired.

Funny though 90 PERCENT of American Indians do not fined the nic offensive.

I never said the players were quiet. Read the post!

The players would have to be quiet where the Steelers’ owner spouted off or they would have problems. From the NFL. And even if they wouldn’t have problems, the Steelers’ owner giving The One credit for his team’s SB win is stupid and an unnecessary addition to the world’s love for a truly inept and possibly evil leader.

The NFL is so uptight, the players can’t wear nonapproved badges or logos on their uniforms or even nonsponsor shoes or socks! They are fined if they do. And that owner approves the policy. Of course, that policy lines his pockets. And, like most liberals, nothing may be allowed to get in the way of positive cash flow.

The lib owner’s likely profit from unique tax rules for depreciation, subsidies for stadia, and free publicity from the White House for his champs amy have gotten where he was standing with the trophy. But The One hadn’t reached in his pocket for any of that. You and I did.

Once again, it’s a matter of words. As Tim said:

NO ONE in the NFL, not the league head office, not any coach, not any official, ever accused them of cheating.

AW1 Tim on September 20, 2009 at 11:08 AM

The Jets accused the Patriots of cheating. The NFL itself never used the word.

Belichick accepted full responsibility for his actions, but to use this incident to accuse the entire team of “cheating” is an insult to the players. If they had been cheating, the NFL would have fined them as well, not just the coach.

But I am not talking about a group of Native American Indians, I am talking about a bunch of millionaires who are a fine representation of the Rainbow Coalition who play a game I love to watch.

Cindy Munford on September 20, 2009 at 1:33 PM

Seahawks getting revenge over the Steelers referees in the Super Bowl would suit me just fine.

Ordinary1 on September 20, 2009 at 10:07 AM

FIFY. Still won’t let it go……

Mallard T. Drake on September 20, 2009 at 1:34 PM

If I lived in Vegas or had access to a sports book, I’d lay a nice sum on the Seahawks today. 1 1/2 dog to the Niners. Hawks will win straight up. I can’t believe the 49ers are that much improved.

BTW, Singletary is one of my all-time favorite players. I really want him to succeed, so ling as it is not at the expense of the Seahawks.
