Obama fudging another health-care horror story?
posted at 10:05 am on September 19, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Politicians love to trot out anecdotal stories when pushing for policy changes, and it’s even better when they can take examples from their own lives. Nowhere is that more easily done than on health-care reform. After all, everyone sees a doctor, and everyone at some point has to deal with serious or even catastrophic diagnoses, or with situations with the potential for that kind of diagnosis. In her speech yesterday, Michelle Obama told a story to which every parent can relate — the moment that a child may have a severe illness that could kill them or damage them for life (via JammieWearingFool):
I will never forget the time eight years ago when Sasha was four months that she would not stop crying. And she was not a crier, so we knew something was wrong. So we fortunately were able to take her to our pediatrician that next morning. He examined her and same something’s wrong. We didn’t know what. But he told us that she could have meningitis. So we were terrified. He said, get to the emergency room right away.
And fortunately for us, things worked out, because she is now the Sasha that we all know and love today — (laughter) — who is causing me great — excitement. (Laughter.)
Things worked out because Sasha got immediate attention, and turned out not to have meningitis after all, as the New York Times reports (and as Mrs. Obama hints in the speech):
She cited instances where women were denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition – “like having a C-section, or having had a baby.”
“These are the kind of facts that still wake me up at night,” Mrs. Obama said.
In her speech, Mrs. Obama also told the story of how her daughter Sasha would not stop crying when she was 4 months old. A doctor’s visit revealed she might have meningitis; she ultimately did not, but the illness produced a scare.
Maybe someone should have told Mrs. Obama’s husband. In a speech to nurses just eight days earlier, Barack Obama told the story quite a bit differently (emphasis mine):
When our youngest daughter, Sasha, was diagnosed with meningitis when she was just three months old, it was one of the scariest moments of my life. And we had to have a spinal tap administered and she ended up being in the hospital for three or four days. And it was touch and go, we didn’t know whether she’d be permanently affected by it. It was the nurses who walked us through what was happening and made sure that Sasha was okay.
Well, she wasn’t diagnosed with meningitis, although the fright was real. How hard is it to get the facts straight so that both Obamas tell the same story? After all, it’s the fright, not the meningitis, that is the key part of the anecdote. Moreover, why would Sasha’s father not know the difference?
Politicians hauling out their families to argue to illustrate their policy agenda is nothing new, but usually they get their facts straight first. It’s quite reminiscent of Obama’s anecdote about Otto Raddatz in his speech to Congress just the day before this speech, in which he accused an insurance company of killing Raddatz by canceling his coverage in the middle of chemotherapy. As Lynn Sweet reported, Raddatz had his coverage reinstated within weeks, never missed a chemotherapy session, and died more than four years later.
It’s bad enough to ignore the facts using someone else’s research. It’s an indication of some serious incompetence to get one wrong about your own daughter, after both parents made her part of the health-care overhaul argument.
Update: AZCoyote has a good point in the comments:
What is the point of the story anyway? That other people couldn’t take their baby to the ER if they thought she had meningitis? Of course they could . . . and it wouldn’t matter if they had health insurance, or if they could pay the bill or not. The ER would have been required by federal law to examine and treat the baby.
If this is supposed to be an example of why we need universal coverage, it’s a spectacularly bad one.

Once again, this is all about MICHELLE’S kids, not ours.
If she was truly concerned for children, where’s the outrage over ACORN being willing to facilitate the opening of a brothel with underaged girls from El Salvador?
If this is about what’s best for children, where’s the outrage over the DC school voucher issue?
If this is about women’s rights, where’s the outrage over the despicable treatment of women in Muslim countries?
Trying to say this is a women’s/children’s issue and plead how much she “cares” about those groups rings VERY, VERY hollow when put in context of the totality of her choices of where to shine her “concern.”

Seriously though, yes, the personal anecdotes add a ‘human touch’ to things. And to get the facts twisted is almost par for the course with every one of these type of things. But to inflate and exaggerate about your own child, who you’ve blatently said is “off limits,” is just sad.

So mom says, no meningitis, dad says meningitis–I guess if we passed health care reform and had access to Electronic Health Records we could fact check this. But since we don’t, more kids both with and without meningitis are going to die or go uncovered because stupid ass parents can’t recall what the kiddos had and are dying for both lack of coverage and memory.

Treatment for meningitis requires IV antibiotic therapy for a lot longer than 3 days which would require a hospital stay of longer than three days…unless it is a viral or aseptic meningitis. I doubt that you would even see a culture and sensitivity back within that short time frame.
doctor horton on September 19, 2009 at 10:21 AM
The whole diagnosed with meningitis thing follows the same pattern Obama has deployed all along. Say whatever makes the story sound good to the audience I’m in front of, damn the facts or what really happened.
It was this way with:
Meeting Michelle in college (he didn’t)
Bill Ayers (just a guy who lives in my neighborhood)
Illegal Aliens and Health care
And there are many, MANY more. In fact, I think this whole “Thou shalt not call anyone a liar while in the Congress” is a DIRECT approach to silencing anyone who says what he’s really doing. They KNOW he lies, and they are afraid Congressmen are going to start saying he’s lying. I noticed this reluctance with Rush and Hannity during the campaign. They used euphemisms and tried to hedge around the simple fact that he was lying… I’m assuming because that’s just not done.
Well, when you can’t point out that a man is obviously lying, you give that person LICENSE to lie as much as he wants in whatever context he wants in order to paint the world with his brush instead of with the truth. When truth no longer matters, what’s left? “We’ve always been at war with Eastaisa…”

Anecdotal stories narrated by politicians are generally spiced with lies.
Michelle you and Obama need to get together and do the following:
1>Write the story down on separate sheets of paper.
2>Get the story from the hospital.
3>Have somebody in WH consolidate all 3 and come up with a story.
4>MUG IT UP.
5>Narrate the story to the nation.
6>Check hotair to find your story being taken apart. Primarily due to the fact that 1, 3, 4 and 5 allow for plenty of habitual lying opportunities.

They’re both telling the truth.
Fact is the doc was motivated by evil profit greed and in his billing to the insurance used a code which he’d get paid out a higher rate – that of menengitis.
In his care and bedside manner with the parents, he was just taking all the precautions necessary.
Barry, being the brilliant accounting guy and medical billing records sleuth noticed the discrepancy as he was reconciling the coverage and payment notices from his governmnet provided health care plan.
Not one to cause excitement, unless there is a good communitity organizing reason behind it, he decided not to inform Michelle of this matter.

clorensen on September 19, 2009 at 10:53 AM
I don’t have a lot of sympathy on this subject. Hospitals make mistakes, and would continue to do so under ObamaCare (probably more). My dad went into the emergency room and the initial diagnosis was kidney and liver failure. The prognosis for that is – poor (ie, death usually occurs in a week or so). It turned out that this wasn’t the case, but we spent 24 hours thinking this was it. Hospitals, in a hurry, make mistakes. Its because they are trying to do the best they can with limited resources. That won’t get any better under a system where they are trying to cut costs dramatically.

You obviously have no kids (given you’re 16 yo). Lemme ‘splain to you how it works. When your baby is sick you remember every detail of what happened because you think to yourself the worst is about to happen. And when the doc says, nah it’s just the sniffles, you feel like you won the lottery.

Sooo, let me get this straight… they let the little kid cry for the rest of the night and then took her to a doctor whose education and experience told him “something’s wrong.”?
They need better writers.

Meh. I’m certainly no fan of Obama or “his” health care plan, but I do have some sympathy. We’re seeing the classic husband and wife moment. How many times has a husband said he remembered something and she corrects him and invariably he says “Are you sure?” and she is.
I don’t think there’s a married man anywhere who “dis-remembered” something like this and was corrected by his wife
“Are you sure?”
Give him a pass.
