Media Matters dishonest editing in support of their “smear” argument exposed

posted at 11:30 am on September 19, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

We have always known that Media Matters is a partisan-hack “media watchdog” site, but we didn’t know they were this bad at it.  Lorie Byrd at Wizbang demolishes the Media Matters “smear” charges against Fox News simply by comparing their edited versions of the clips to the original, and noting that what Media Matters left out is exactly what they claim Fox left out of its reporting.  It’s part of their ongoing campaign to label as a smear the airing of a video in which someone claims to have committed a murder, and it’s getting more threadbare by the moment.

Here’s the Media Matters argument:

Fox News’ Glenn Beck recently aired a video indicating that an ACORN employee shot and killed her husband, without first bothering to verify whether the husband is, in fact, dead. He isn’t. The video is, in other words, a fraud. But that didn’t stop Beck from calling it evidence of “murder” and perhaps even “premeditated murder.” Of a person who is still alive.

Sean Hannity aired it, too. …

Any chance we’ll see this level of outrage directed at Glenn Beck for unquestioningly airing an apparently fraudulent tape in order to portray an ACORN employee as a murderer? Beck has, after all, been pretty clear that he is trying to bring ACORN down.

Media Matters wonders why Beck aired it “unquestioningly,” but that’s not what happened when you watch the full clip, which Media Matters doesn’t provide:

Lorie writes:

When I watched the video Media Matters ran I immediately knew what was up because they chopped Beck’s commentary to bits and curiously left out the part of it that completely contradicts their claim. I looked for the Beck video at YouTube to make sure I was not misremembering his commentary and here is a transcript of what I found.

Glenn Beck: “This is twisted, bizarre, macabre. I mean, is this theater? I’m not a lawyer. I’m not a jury. Um, but gosh even to me it seems like this is a potential admission of murder and the way she was describing doing some groundwork beforehand, you know so everyone in town knew exactly what was going on, a case might be made for premeditated murder. In fairness, I don’t understand people who stay in abusive relationships. I don’t. I get it. I get it. And maybe a jury might conclude that it was justifiable homicide. I don’t know but we haven’t been even able to confirm from the state of California whether Theresa’s husband from ten years ago was killed. Or if he’s dead. Or if she even had a husband. Did she make the story up? I don’t know. Nobody is asking questions. See if the mainstream media will follow this one. This is shocking. It raises serious questions about what is going on inside of ACORN.”

I italicized the portion of the commentary Media Matters provided to their readers in the mishmash video they put together. The parts they omitted are not italicized. I put in bold the part of Beck’s comments that directly contradict Media Matters post.

Media Matters compares this to the Dan Rather/TANG incident, in which CBS passed off obvious forgeries as legitimate documents from the Texas Air National Guard from the early 1970s. Even CBS had to admit that the documents turned out to be forgeries; in fact, their source Bill Burkett admitted on air that he had supposedly destroyed the originals and retyped them. It’s nice to see Media Matters finally admitting that CBS faked that story, though, since they seem comfortable using it as a standard. And the CBS story didn’t involve a videotape of their subject claiming to have committed the crime. Using someone’s own words is hardly a “smear,” and an admission of murder on videotape seems pretty newsworthy regardless of the circumstances.

More to the point, this editing shows the rank dishonesty and flat-out incompetence of Media Matters. Did they think that no one would check the rest of the tape? Be sure to read all of Lorie’s post.

I believe it was SOP for ACORN to charge a “finders fee” when finalizing a subprime loan. This fee was then rolled into the mortgage so the borrowers were then paying interest on it long term, and I’m not sure the borrowers were even aware of it. I’ll bet an outside audit would be eye opening, and if the Citibank/ACORN combo in CA was involved, it doesn’t just affect ACORN. Roll on!

It is called origination fee. 1-2%. I posted this yesterday. when a mortgage defaults, the loan has lent money to pay ACORN. So in a black no money down loan, the loan is the house, closing costs and fees and the write off is higher than the purchase price of the home.
The inducement to get loan approval is being charged as racist if they decline.
My bank tried to hire a black employee. They required good credit for a job offer. He had his home repossessed. They turned him down and he filed a race discrimination claim.

What is glossed over in all this is that the video doesn’t prove or disprove that an actual homicide was committed.

All it proves is the fact that the ACORN woman was merely stating that she killed her husband and layed some groundwork for a spousal abuse defense.

When I saw this video in its entirety, I didn’t think for a minute that she killed anyone. It’s not the kind of thing a premeditated murderer is going to share with strangers.

Instead I saw a complete wack job, which must be a prerequisite for securing employment at ACORN.

Blatantly lying to their readers, because now, they’re finding themselves irrelevant too? That’s my guess.

zmdavid on September 19, 2009 at 11:44 AM

The MSM and the likes of Media Matters simply don’t matter anymore. They have essentially been relegated to preaching to the choir. That choir is approx. 20% of the people who will not change their minds from a far-left liberal view, no matter what the issue or the facts. That. Will. Not. Change.

The rest of the people are getting their information from other sources and ARE paying attention. They now realize they have been had, and are looking in all the corners for the facts and the truth. The falling poll numbers for the liberal left and the Obama administration are ample proof that their searches are working and the information IS getting out where it is needed.

It is time we all realize that there will always be Media Matters types, and there will always be their base that believe whatever they offer, and we can now move beyond that. We need to just continue to chop down their Oak/ACORN trees. THAT IS GETTING THEIR ATTENTION, BIG TIME.

a capella on September 19, 2009 at 11:48 AM

To be fair, all kinds of lenders charge all kinds of junk fees, and lots of them get rolled into the loan for a number of reasons. (For example, if a seller ends up paying closing costs for a buyer, TECHNICALLY the buyer is adding those costs that they are asking for into the loan by upping their offer by an equal amount.)
There is nothing illegal in that, unless the fees go to the level of preditory lending practices. All the fees charged have to be disclosed to the buyer in writing on the closing statement (per the Real Estate Settlement and Procedures Act A/K/A RESPA). There’s also another law that deals with what the lender has to disclose, up front in the GFE (Regulation Z).

I may be wrong, but I don’t think ACORN originates loans. They are just the middleman, who puts buyers and lenders together. If they charged either the buyer or lender a “finder’s fee” That would be big time bad, at least in my home state of Missouri.
I’m not a lawyer, but if that is the case, I can see multiple laws that were broken, not just RESPA…and if the lenders paid a finder’s fee…that could bring those folks down as well. I’d love for some investigative reporter to start digging from this angle.

Chewy the Lab on September 19, 2009 at 12:14 PM

It’s things like this that only serve to feed the disgust and the anger from the Tea Partiers, 9/12ers, and everyday Americans alike. They have for decades been selectively editing, spinning, apologizing, exaggerating, and have recently moved to flat out, bald-face lying.

The mass media and the politicians had all that time to cover for each other, with very little response available. The corruption runs so deep, and is so entrenched, it will take years to root it out, even if only allowing for staggered Senatorial races. That’s without even counting all the career beaurocrats, and organizations like ACORN, which are so twisted and bound together, that have to be found out, exposed, and shamed.

Bottom line though, is that if outfits like Media Matters, and the rest of the media, keep up with what they are doing, such as this story, and furthering their absolutely rediculous meme that opposing the Left = Racism, they will be accomplishing what years of talk, debate, writing, and speeches have not: Driving an overwhelming majority of Americans into the Conservative Ranks.

And Republicans, listen up! We will not stand for YOU doing the same thing on “our” side. Corruption is corruption, and any corrupt officials MUST be thrown out on their ears IMMEDIATELY, regardless of caucus vote counts or any other factors. Or you will be gone as well.

Chewy the Lab on September 19, 2009 at 12:14 PM

They do originate loans in many cities. Outfits like ACORN, Self-Help Credit Union, and NACA have developed these so-called “nonprofit” lending programs over many years. Then they advocate for monstrous overregulation of for-profit lenders to make them have to increase prices. Their ultimate goal really is to crash our banking system and make mortgage lending a non-profit business, more like a utility. Cheap credit is one of the “rights” this movement has been advocating for years. And we now have a President and Congress who apparently believe in that vision.

I don’t think many people, even those informed people who read HotAir every day, really understand the radical vision of these “community organizing” groups. The Rathke brothers have carried out what was only a dream of people like the SDS and Weather Underground back in the 1960s. They want to turn the U.S. into a giant Cuba.

Bob's Kid on September 19, 2009 at 1:04 PM

Hmmm, I think the argument that MMFA was making was essentially that several shows on Fox News reported on a story, before investigating whether it was real or fabricated. Journalism 101…I don’t understand how the part they (MMFA) clipped has anything to do with the fact that they ran a story without checking its validity first…in other words they got caught running a fake story. You don’t air something without verifying the information first, hence the comparison to Dan Rather. You mean to tell me that they couldn’t wait another day to gather the facts? They could, but they didn’t, because they were in ACORN pile on mode, hence the “smear” argument. They did the same thing with the Obama went to a Madrassa story, until CNN corrected them. Face it, if conservatives want any credibility, people like ED and AP have got to stop defending Fox News. They Lie.CONSTANTLY. Oh I don’t want to hear the “big bad liberal media conservative victimization argument”, it’s no excuse for any clear-thinking American to allow themselves to be lied to. Oh, more thing. MMFA provides clips, but it also provides written transcripts of each segment, something ED failed to include in his argument. I know RATINGS, RATINGS, RATINGS, that’s all that matters.

StoneKrab on September 19, 2009 at 1:05 PM

Tell the same lie often enough and people begin to believe it no matter what the evidence is.

This wasn’t about convincing independents, it was about rallying democrats and liberals into staying loyal by telling them lies that fit what they want to hear.

Evidence of falsehood doesn’t matter, they still win because a good 40% of the country wants to believe them.

Are you nuts? Or just a liar? Beck said they attempted to check out the charges. As I have posted before, there is no ready access to rap sheets unless you are law enforcement or a prosecutor. It is irrelevant as to whether she murdered anyone or not. What is relevant is that she advised people on how to break the law. As to her comments that she murdered her husband – she made them; she owns them. If its not true she and her employer, ACORN have the right to go on the record and explain that she is a lying POS.

Blake on September 19, 2009 at 1:14 PM

Well the most brillant thing the left did was demonize FoxNews. They have sucessfully used those rules against Fox.

Has anyone ever figured out how to overcome the demonizing? Because there is a huge part of the country who really believes that Fox is the devils news.

A lot of the Obama followers would wake up if they could get balance in their information.

WE should be shouting to the roof tops that the only people ACORN has fired are people of color. No white people including this deranged woman have lost their jobs.

ACORN is discriminating against people of color.

petunia on September 19, 2009 at 1:17 PM

Well I’ll be danged Jim, you showed me…you obviously don’t have an argument, run away.

StoneKrab on September 19, 2009 at 1:12 PM

Neither do you, yet you persist.

Worse, they are discriminating against meth heads who are traditionally white. lol

“I don’t understand how the part they (MMFA) clipped has anything to do with the fact that they ran a story without checking its validity first…in other words they got caught running a fake story.”

Oh, BS.

Fox showed the woman claiming to have killed someone. Fox didn’t definitively claim she had killed someone.

mockmook on September 19, 2009 at 1:20 PM

I’ll tell you what, the two young folks that took on this little project have done more in the last week to expose media bias than any other event I can think of, and so far, at least as far as ACORN, it is having a genuine impact. I am damn glad to see it too.

JusDreamin on September 19, 2009 at 12:43 PM

I think it is hilarious that we sound like old people when ever we talk about those two you whipper snappers, Giles and O’Keeffe! We sound so old!

petunia on September 19, 2009 at 1:20 PM

StoneKrab, you don’t get the whole point. Beck did not report there was a killing. He showed a tape of the woman ADMITTING to killing her husband. He flat out says he does NOT know it’s true, and that they TRIED to get info from the authorities in CA, to no avail at airtime.

This is a blatent attempt by MediaMatters to push the “blame” back to Beck, Breitbart, and Fox in general. Its not like Fox or anyone else went and infiltrated an organization that demostrably works for the “other side” and acted like an imbicile to deliberately make them look bad.

JamesLee on September 19, 2009 at 1:23 PM

Question: Does this rise to the standard of Slander/Libel? There is obvious malicious intent.

Techie on September 19, 2009 at 1:23 PM

Nice to see StoneKrab and its ilk have their priorities straight.

Assisting the organization of an international child sex slavery racket IS NOT AS IMPORTANT as putting words into Glenn Beck’s mouth.

Liberals Uber Alles!!

That’s the left-wing philosophy in an ACORN shell.

I’ll take the Red pill myself. Whatever the price. It is worth it to know truth.

petunia on September 19, 2009 at 1:26 PM

Face it, if conservatives want any credibility, people like ED and AP have got to stop defending Fox News. They Lie.CONSTANTLY.

StoneKrab on September 19, 2009 at 1:05 PM

No, kid, CNN lies.

1. Lied about the US nerve-gassing Laotian civilians.

2, Covered up Saddam Hussein’s atrocities against his own people for 10 years,

3. Had their CEO resign in disgrace after he falsely accused US troops of murdering Iraqi journalists.

When you can cite similar misdeeds by “Faux News”, then we’ll talk, Until then, getalife.

Media Matters are Blue pill dealers. The trolls are blue pill junkies.

petunia on September 19, 2009 at 1:28 PM

Is it too much to expect of the opposition that when they attempt a hatchet job, they at least do so competently?

JohnGalt23 on September 19, 2009 at 1:30 PM

I know it’s pointless to “debate” the trolls, but two words Krabby.

Operation Tailwind.

Techie on September 19, 2009 at 1:31 PM

Oh really and Congress acted on their only bi-partisan legislation on “lies”?

And of course you “know” Fox lies because you watch them everyday yourself and see the “lies” for yourself right?

No. You are repeating what the media controlled by their opposition tell you is true. What stake do these people have in telling you Fox lies? Is there anything in it for them to make you believe that? Use some critical thinking.

I used to watch MSNBC regularly. I loved it. It was everyday viewing for me. I even thought Olberman was funny. I didn’t agree with them at all and sometimes I yelled at the TV but I wanted to hear what they had to say.

Then all by myself with no one having to tell me I just couldn’t take the constant falsehoods. Constant falsehoods. I don’t even bother with their lies anymore. I feel sorry for them for selling their souls to Obama.

That’s the difference between me and you. I do my own thinking.

petunia on September 19, 2009 at 1:35 PM

WRONG! its not media matters,,,its GEORGE SOROS, the single most destructive individual in America! He has the cash to pay people to do his bidding. He’s not an American, He’s a Hungarian.

mockmook on September 19, 2009 at 1:20 PM

What legitimate news organization does that? You air something without facts? So if I say, I know Obama and Osama bin laden are cousins, will they air that? What Fox did was BS.

StoneKrab, you don’t get the whole point. Beck did not report there was a killing. He showed a tape of the woman ADMITTING to killing her husband. He flat out says he does NOT know it’s true, and that they TRIED to get info from the authorities in CA, to no avail at airtime.

JamesLee on September 19, 2009 at 1:23 PM

What Fox did with that tape is what the National Enquirer does. I don’t know what ‘point’ I’m missing. Just because you say, “Well…I don’t know if it’s true or not” doesn’t make it correct. By your theory, it’s nothing wrong with airing stories without confirmation.

Nice to see StoneKrab and its ilk have their priorities straight.

Techie on September 19, 2009 at 1:25 PM

yeah dude, nice attempt at deflecting…I never once equated ACORN’s corruption with Fox’s media malpractice. I never once defended ACORN, matter of fact, I didn’t even speak about ACORN. See I, unlike you sir, know how to stay on topic. There is a box of crayons on the counter in the kitchen, go sit there quietly and color.

StoneKrab on September 19, 2009 at 1:38 PM

What legitimate news organization does that?

How would you possibly know what a legitimate news organization does. My bet is you have never ever in your life even watched Fox News. Everything you have ever seen was produced so much you couldn’t see anything except what they wanted you to see.

That is the difference between real news.

As Fox says: We report. You decide.

Report it warts and all. Keep editing down to minimum. That’s responsible journalism.

Neither is Rupert Murdoch…he’s Australian.

Why is everyone talking about CNN when arguing with me. I don’t work for them. This is about Fox News and Media Matters. Stay on topic people. It’s funny how no one is willing to defend that link I provided. Blatant lie. And that was YESTERDAY.

StoneKrab on September 19, 2009 at 1:43 PM

Any legitimate news organization would. However, those in the tank for this administration, i.e., not legitimate, and toadies like you would not.

Blake on September 19, 2009 at 1:44 PM
