Rasmussen: ObamaCare hits highest disapproval rate yet

posted at 12:55 pm on September 18, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The bounce from Barack Obama’s speech last week to Congress continues to amplify … to Obama’s detriment.  Rasmussen now reports that opposition to ObamaCare has reached its highest level yet, at 56%, while only 43% support it.  Majorities now believe that health care would get worse and more expensive under Obama’s overhaul of the American health-care system:

Fifty-six percent (56%) of voters nationwide now oppose the health care reform proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats. That’s the highest level of opposition yet measured and includes 44% who are Strongly Opposed.

Just 43% now favor the proposal, including 24% who Strongly Favor it. …

If the plan passes, 26% of voters say the quality of care will get better, and 51% say it will get worse. In August, the numbers were 23% better and 50% worse.

Fifty-one percent (51%) say passage of the plan will make the cost of health care go up while 20% say it will make costs go down. In August, 52% thought the plan would lead to higher costs, and just 17% thought it would achieve the stated goal of lowering costs.

President Obama plans a media blitz this weekend to make his case — again – for ObamaCare.  So far, his media blitzes appear to have had the opposite reaction as he hopes.  Obama hasn’t exactly been shy about his media appearances, as Jim Geraghty notes from a USA Today report:

Obama will have done 124 print, broadcast and radio interviews by day’s end on Sunday, according to a tally by Martha Joynt Kumar, a political scientist at Towson University in Maryland. George W. Bush did 40 and Bill Clinton did 46 by the same point in their presidencies.

At times, it seems that the only strategy employed by this administration is to do the opposite of whatever the previous administration did.  That’s certainly true of media appearances, but the returns have been diminishing for some time.  Even while blanketing the media, Obama has dropped under 50% approval on a wide range of issues, including health care and the economy, two traditional Democratic strengths.

Part of the reason why this strategy has not been effective is because Obama has had nothing new to say in months.  He appears convinced that the answer to voter rejection of his arguments is to offer them repeatedly and in increasing loudness and anger.  His latest foray into prime time should have educated him to the folly of this approach.

That brings us to Sunday, when Obama will appear in five televised interviews.  Will the media press him for new arguments?  What exactly should they ask him, and what will Obama be prepared to tell them?  I have a few questions myself for the President, and any of the interviewers should feel free to use them:

  • Why did your administration continue to insist publicly that cap-and-trade would cost the average household $175 per year when an analysis from Treasury showed the cost more than ten times that amount?  Why did it take a FOIA application to release that study in the “most transparent administration ever?”
  • Why did you pick the 70th anniversary of the Soviet invasion to reverse course on missile defense in Poland?
  • You suggested that an amnesty program would solve the problem of illegal immigrant access to the health-care system in the US after your overhaul.  Do you think Americans should subsidize health-insurance coverage for people who entered the country illegally?
  • Two years ago, you told people on the campaign trail that paying for more coverage through efficiency savings in the health-care system was a myth, and that it would take higher taxes to overhaul the health care system.  Now you argue the opposite.  Why?

I’m sure I’ll add more later, and feel free to add yours in the comments.

Everyone supported Bush and entering into War. That is why the left is twisting.

They booted out long-term very sensible liberal senators when they disagreed.

That is the biggest example.

We went to war because Bush knew, we wanted revenge.

End of story.

I get irritated by both left and right on this.

Bush didn’t talk ANYONE into this.

It was the public’s choice.

I think that baloney is baloney. And I called out some posters here for their threats about violence in other threads.

I do think Pelosi’s remarks, however stupid, have a seed of truth. AnninCA

Well, Ann – considering that this thread is about PUBLIC DISAPPROVAL OF OBAMACARE, what I said had nothing to do with Polozi’s idiotic remarks, or violence at all.

My question was about why those of us who oppose Obamacare, and all his other statist schemes for government takeovers of American industry are being branded as RACISTS by Obama’s amen corners. This is known as a “Black PR” campaign, (I know, I know, but that is the textbook term for it…) and I believe it’s an orchestrated and deliberate strategy from the White House.

The question is Why? Why is labeling half the country as racists, nazis, mobsters, etc., a winning strategy? The question of When is interesting too – They roll it out en masse and a few days later, book the Precedent on 5 friendly, slobbering Obama-luv talk shows the next Sunday…. I smell something fishy, seems like a setup.

“People working on progressive issues, with truth and information on their side — those should be the greatest weapons,” the co-founder and creative director of the design and strategy firm Free Range Studios said. “But those things are actually a huge liability. The left ends up relying on truth and information too much, and neglecting the impact of the emotional and the irrational.”

The post is about great questions for Obama on Sunday. The trolls have you so far off the point. Guess what, they won.

1) Mr. President, did you ever get a paycheck from ACORN?
2) Was it for any work other than that one lawsuit you represented them on?
3) How many times have you met with the either of the Rathke brothers?
4) Have you ever accepted money from them or from any of the businesses that they are affiliated with?

It would be interesting to know. The LA Attorney General is requesting documents of w-2′s and 1099′s for ACORN and all its affiliated business out of the New Orleans location. There are over 200+. The Maryland Acorn had its legal address there.

Do NOT think that there aren’t even people posting here who aren’t truly mentally ill.
AnninCA on September 18, 2009 at 2:02 PM

Oh, good, I love deconstruction. This is a triple-negative, so to make this more understandable, we should cancel two of the negatives. Since there are three of them, there are three different combinations with two of them cancelled out to positives:

1. Do NOT think that there are even people posting here who are truly mentally ill.

Or, put another way, no one who posts here is truly mentally ill. A naive but gracious sentiment.

2. You should think that there aren’t even people posting here who are truly mentally ill.

Same basic sentiment.

3. You should think that there are even people posting here who aren’t truly mentally ill.

Not nearly as gracious… this concedes that there are at least some people posting here who are not truly mentally ill. Could be that most of them are, but it’s not everyone.

So, AnnInCA, is it one of these three, or is it simply a case of poor sentence construction. Enquiring minds want to know!

VekTor on September 18, 2009 at 7:31 PM

Mister President, I think I can clear things up for you.

The problem you are having is not a case of the people having not heard your argument. It has been repeated many, many times. Your argument has been heard.

The reason you are facing opposition is that people disagree with your argument.

For many, it is a case where the “reassurances” that you offer are being heard… they are simply not being believed, and with good reason.

When you make a claim to the American people, and the objective analysis by other experts and organizations directly contradict your claim (including, for example, the Congressional Budget Office), there is good reason to doubt that the claim you make is true.

If you do that often enough (as you have been doing by continuing to offer the same disproven claims over and over), the people begin to have good reason to believe that you are not telling them the truth.

It’s not a question of needing to repeat the same thing, over and over, only louder. Our hearing is fine. We simply don’t believe that your claims are true any longer. You have squandered that “presumption of innocence”.

If you want the American people to believe what you have to say, you need to come clean about the untrue things you’ve said so far, acknowledge that, and offer a concrete, objective plan IN WRITING which spells out exactly what it is that you wish to do, and exactly how you will go about accomplishing that.

It’s not that the time for “bickering” is over, Mister President, it is that the time for vagueness, evasion, and claims unsupported by objective evidence to be over.

Be fully detailed, be exact, be objective, and put it in writing, Mister President. Then (and I believe, only then) will you stand a chance of achieving high public support for “your plan”.

Until then, I believe the American people have “seen through” your attempts to sell this notion through sharp-sounding promises with nothing concrete to back them up.

Revolution is Coming to America!!

It could be either side that starts it, but the country is becoming more divided, not less. Politicians (both parties) receive corporate campaign donations. Well, corporations have board of directors who are foreigners so we actually have foreigners, via campaign contributions, deciding America’s political campaigns & future. Both sides are guilty.

I also read the underground book & it was great!! Read it & see how a small town (maybe your town) stands up to decade career politicians & Federal tyranny & start the 2nd American Revolution. I bought 2 for my friends. It changed my outlook on what is really happening in America.

This may be the only time in your life that you can ‘make your history & leave a legacy for your grandchildren’. Take a stand and step into the streets as the book shows!

Obama has gone from petulant didacticism to strident desperation.

There is a wild look in his eyes these days.

Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

What is Barack Hussein Obama thinking when he is trying another full court press media blitz? Who does he think he is going to convert? If you only listen to the state run media, you have probably already bought into his dissembling. But if you are anyone else, do you think your mind is going to be changed by the same malleable retoric?

If he really had something that would change a person’s view, he’d spew it on Fox. This is where he needs to change hearts and minds.

Instead he is going to cozy up to the fake journalists who have sold themsleves out in order to pursue a marxist ideology.

This will not work. He is a one-term president who will rank with the Jimmy Carters and Woodrow Wilsons of American Presidents.

And none of this, none at all, has anything to do with his skin color.

Folks,
We consulted a bunch of our folks who are combat medics/EMS and ask them to watch the video of sf nan.
A large number of them said she had a look on her face they see on people who are going into shock.
Nan was just starting to realize that she had lost control of the house. The last shot was from one of the Lady’s,she said watch his face on Sunday, especially the eyes.

Where did you get those private emails that Axelrod sent emails to?

Why not “cut the fraud and waste” in medicare right NOW?

Why were the Inspector Generals fired?

Why did your justice dept drop ALL charges against The Black Panther Party?

Will you press the congress to add Tort Reform to the healthcare bill?

May I see your complete campaign donation list?

My questions:

1-Why the heck you don’t sit down for a whole week in the WH?

2-How much fuel does it cost to fly on AF1? I want payload, manifests and therefore, how much fuel to preach to the choir.

3-Hello!! YOU WON! Stop campaigning please?

4-The more you beat that dead drum about healthcare the sicker Americans get. YOU fried one of my TV’s. I fear I am gonna lose another one because of this same crap.

5-You don’t stay in the WH because you see ghosts there? Please let in Ghost Hunters, perhaps there are answers to some of my questions.

6-Why are you using your youngest daughter as a portrait of healthcare issue, when as a parent myself I could not care about that, I wanted her to be treated no matter if we were or not insured? It’s my children for Pete’s sake!

7-To avoid being even more in shock and awe, could you give us an insight of what are the plans for the rest of your ONLY term? That way we get prepared for what’s coming.

8-WHAT HEALTH CARE PLAN ARE WE TALKING ABOUT??

8-WHAT HEALTHCARE ARE WE TALKING ABOUT NOW?

a)HR 3200 disaster
b)Obama’s Plan
c)Kennedy’s Plan
d)Newest solo plan proposed “bipartisan” that is not really bipartisan.

9-In case you care to provide an answer to any of these, we are jumping rope on public or not healthcare plan. I cannot explain to my DH who works at a hospital what’s really the issue just that there are too many out there & we might get penalized for it.

10-When you look at the camera instead of TOTUS you creep me out. Why?

11-It will be popcorn fun to start seeing all these healthcare amendments come to fruition for Republicans repeal it on 2012. That’s if: all these get done by Xmas or before you get impeached.

12-As an apparent gentleman, what positive abilities
does Sarah Palin have that top yours? (ouch!)

When you say “created/saved” jobs, what EXACTLY do you mean? Please be specific.

Who was on AF1 when it buzzed NYC?

Have you read any books co-authored by your Science Czar John Holdren?

Ha! :D

Kooky but halfway plausible scenario:
. Saturday Night Live has on Van Jones as the guest host (ah… an hour & a half w/the country’s favorite organizer… can’t wait)

. Cast does a reprise of Jesse Jackson’s “Love Jones” skit – but instead of the real Jesse talking to a picture of Jeanne Kirkpatrick, a cast member impersonating Jesse Jackson talks to a glamour shot of Van Jones, professing his “Van Jones”. (At the end, maybe the real Van Jones walks on stage and hijinks ensue.)

Alternate scenario: Van Jones doesn’t guest host, but a cast member (or the real Jesse Jackson !) talks to a picture of Van Jones anyway.

Easy to fix, just do an amnesty for the 20 million illegals and then tax the cap and trade out of them.

What we have is 650 old kooks in D.C. who only care about the next pork trough to root around in for re-election money.

President Obama does not like himself. He also thinks that his father did not want him. He has huge self worth issues.
Once he has a few more failures and then feels rejection he will act out in odd and strange not connected ways. He will even attack those close to him in the White House and blame them for his failures. When others attempt to stay his hand he will attack those also. More time outside the White House will come next, more golf, more trips, all of it disconnected. His problem is those near him are not the type who will see he is off his balance and they will allow him to self destruct live on TV and or before a joint session of the House and Senate.

Anna, the personal insults are, unfortunately, just normal business. Don’t let the b*stards wear you down. They won’t admit it, but a whole lot of people love to debate/insult the other side here. You’ll be missed if you leave.

President Obama plans a media blitz this weekend to make his case — again – for ObamaCare. So far, his media blitzes appear to have had the opposite reaction as he hopes.

Yes, yes indeed. Obama’s been a great salesman for how awful Obama is, AND his ideas.

Remember Obama’s stoned ‘interview’ with Charlie Gibson from (only) a few months ago?

At least he was entertaining then.

AnninCA on September 18, 2009 at 2:28 PM

Oh, my gosh, not at ALL.

She presents the abortionist, infanticide perspective and like the monster she actually is, is making pretense that that, she, somehow speaks for mothers. It’s like a pedophile saying how much they love, really love, children: ultimately exceptionally sick.

Got a question. What do you think we should do about people that have pre-existing conditions, and they lose their insurance. How do they get new insurance if their pre-existing condition is ruled out? I am asking this as my granddaughter (6) has cystic fibrosis (an incurable terminal disease), and is currently on the state child insurance. I wonder if she will be able to get her own insurance when she is 21?

They can probably put her on Medicaid. It won’t be great, but it’s better than nothing. No hospital would turn her away for treatment, but she may have medical bills to pay. I hope the community and local charities can help her with that.

But to force private insurers to accept pre-existing conditions would be financially ruinous for them, as no one would want to pay premiums until they get sick.

Portability across state lines would help.
