Obama’s solution on illegals and health care? Amnesty; Update: Video added

posted at 9:29 am on September 18, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The Washington Times reports that Barack Obama has finally concluded that Joe Wilson was right, and that ObamaCare presents a big problem in handling illegal immigrants.  Fortunately, the White House has found a solution to the problem.  No, they’re not going to beef up enforcement or require identification before receiving subsidies and services.  They’re just going to offer amnesty so that no one’s illegal anymore:

President Obama said this week that his health care plan won’t cover illegal immigrants, but argued that’s all the more reason to legalize them and ensure they eventually do get coverage.

He also staked out a position that anyone in the country legally should be covered – a major break with the 1996 welfare reform bill, which limited most federal public assistance programs only to citizens and longtime immigrants.

“Even though I do not believe we can extend coverage to those who are here illegally, I also don’t simply believe we can simply ignore the fact that our immigration system is broken,” Mr. Obama said Wednesday evening in a speech to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. “That’s why I strongly support making sure folks who are here legally have access to affordable, quality health insurance under this plan, just like everybody else.

Mr. Obama added, “If anything, this debate underscores the necessity of passing comprehensive immigration reform and resolving the issue of 12 million undocumented people living and working in this country once and for all.”

Republicans said that amounts to an amnesty, calling it a backdoor effort to make sure current illegal immigrants get health care.

In other words, not only should everyone pay for Americans to get health care, we should pay for health care for those who came here illegally.  That’s going to be a winning argument in 2010, especially in Blue Dog districts!  We’re going to bust the budget and infringe on your personal choices, and we’re going to make you pay for insurance for illegal immigrants!

If a Republican had run an ad making those charges in 2008, the media would have called it a “smear”.  If comedians used it in their act, it would have been a joke about GOP paranoia.  The joke, unfortunately, is on those who voted for the Blue Dogs because of their supposed conservatism, and on those who voted for Obama because of his supposed centrism.

You all knew this was coming.

You don’t have to insure illegals if you just make them all legal. Then you’re just insuring citizens!

And if you oppose this, you’re racist on two fronts!

While we’re at it, why don’t we just do away with immigration completely and make everyone in the world a US Citizen so they can come here and get health care.

This is why none of us were fooled that illegals wouldn’t be leeching Obamacare.

The solution always was going to be they’d just make them “legal”.

Obama truly isn’t very bright if he thinks doubling down on the government takeover of healthcare disaster by adding amnesty to it is going to improve his current situation.

If he starts pushing for amnesty NOW, he hits the low 30′s. If he thinks people are pissed now…

TXUS on September 18, 2009 at 9:39 AM

I can’t decide if this is step two in Obama’s Cloward-Piven strategy (throw as much as possible at the oppos) to bolster his tanking numbers or if Obama and his team are as inept as this appears to be politically. If this is indeed a new bullet point in Obama’s playbook on how to win this, I’d say that the odds just went from about 50/50 to 70/30 against. How this will work to galvanize support for this plan is beyond me – among legal citizens that is. Unless of course, they know that support for it has peaked amount the electorate and now he’s going after the illegal hispanic vote to prop it up. This reaks of desperation and potential political disaster for them, which is always a good thing.

volnation on September 18, 2009 at 9:40 AM

Mr. Obama added, “If anything, this debate underscores the necessity of passing comprehensive immigration reform and resolving the issue of 12 million undocumented people living and working in this country once and for all.”

–Suggests this will have to be done by legislation, not something he will do himself. And wouldn’t it make more sense to require illegal immigrants to have insurance or pay a fine, instead of allowing them free use of emergency rooms? We are already paying for illegal immigrants who get free use of emergency rooms.

anniekc on September 18, 2009 at 9:40 AM

If President Obama is going to urge support for the 8th Amnesty (code word: “Comprehensive Immigration Reform”), then why in the world should we have borders?

Recent studies have shown that it’s a fallacy that providing preventative care will save money compared to what we’re paying now to treat people in ‘emergency rooms’ – in fact it would cost more.

Even if there were ‘savings’ there you’d still argue the best solution is to turn control of our healthcare system over to a massive government bureaucracy and that this system will provide better healthcare to more people for less money?

The One’s poll numbers are sinking. His health care plan is tanking. The economy is in shambles. The deficit is out-of-control. The Dems and the media(I know, I’m being redundant) are already being forced to play the race card less than 8 months into his Presidency.

So what does Obama decide to do to calm everyone down and regain his popularity? He shuts down the missle defense program in eastern Europe and follows that up by proposing amnesty for 12 million illegals. Something so unpopular with the American people that even a vast majority of Dems don’t want it.

I think he’s basically decided at this point to say “$%#& it”, drop the disguise, and go full-blown leftist radical.

Baucus’s bill is pilloried by his own party (as being too expensive not less), O recruits his own wife as a pitch person, Dems have overwhelming numbers in both houses and O still can’t close the deal, and now he lobs the amnesty of illegals out there.
