Michelle Obama on ObamaCare: This is very much a women’s issue

posted at 8:54 pm on September 18, 2009 by Allahpundit

“The status quo is unacceptable,” she says, ignoring the fact that a near-majority thinks the status quo is very much acceptable indeed when the alternative is ObamaCare. Ah well. This is, as predicted, the “soccer-mom sell,” aimed squarely at women who might otherwise balk at the plan’s pricetag and/or their suspicions that their families will do worse with universal health care than without it. And yes, before you ask, of course there was a heartwarming anecdote about children to cement the emotional appeal. Less heartwarming is her prior involvement in “patient dumping” when she advised a hospital in Chicago. America’s forgotten but the boss hasn’t:

While a top executive at the hospital, Mrs. Obama helped engineer the plan to offload low-income patients with non-urgent health needs. Under the Orwellian banner of an “Urban Health Initiative,” Mrs. Obama sold the scheme to outsource low-income care to other facilities as a way to “dramatically improve health care for thousands of South Side residents.” The program guaranteed “free” shuttle rides to and from the outside clinics.

In truth, it was old-fashioned cost-cutting and favor-trading repackaged as minority aid. Clearing out the poor freed up room for insured (i.e., more lucrative) patients. If a Republican had proposed the very same program and recruited black civic leaders to front it, Michelle Obama and her grievance-mongering friends would be screaming “RAAAAAAAAACISM!” at the top of their lungs…

Following the Adams incident, the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) blasted Mrs. Obama and Mr. Axelrod’s grand plan. The group released a statement expressing “grave concerns that the University of Chicago’s policy toward emergency patients is dangerously close to ‘patient dumping,’ a practice made illegal by the Emergency Medical Labor and Treatment Act (EMTALA)” – signed by President Reagan, by the way – “and reflected an effort to ‘cherry pick’ wealthy patients over poor.”

For whatever reason, the posts about Mrs. O tend to bring out our jerkiest commenters so if you haven’t read Ed’s post today about comment protocol, now would be a good time. We’ll be watching the thread, as will our many valued regulars. Ignore Ed’s advice at your peril.

Yeah it is a women’s issue, because thanks to lawyers and the massive litigation that goes on its going to be hard for any OBGYN to get insurance.

seesalrun on September 19, 2009 at 12:26 AM

Yeah. Pretty much agree until some more Pubs step into the spotlight. I honestly think more than a few Republicans would like us all to just shut up and go away. Being in the minority probably isn’t so bad. You don’t have to take responsibility for anything. You can continue to get a nice paycheck for just showing up. Nice work if you can get it.

M.O. is recycling. It’s the belt from the loading dock work at Wal-Mart before the University of Chicago Hospitals created that $300k set aside job for her.

Her attire is fair game because it represents her level of respect for her audience. The equivalent of wearing spandex, a tank top and curlers to a job interview. Were she poor a clean t-shirt and work pants would be acceptable but M.O. has advisers, ready cash and no excuses to do better than slumming on camera.

What was it I was reading about China and tires?
It will be more difficult on Moms when rationing of care causes lines and longer waiting periods. I would have thought Michelle would have considered this although I know she has lived a more affluent life than most moms. Her values are far different from mine so her words fail to convince me as do those of her husband. I have to give her credit for trying to sell a very unpopular bill.

FLOTUS also cited dubious stats about how much more women of childbearing age pay than men. If/that they do pay more, it’s because women during those years typically incur more risk and costs – precisely due to pregnancy and child birth.

Oh, but I forgot – in the la la land of free healthcare for all, there is no such thing as pricing for risk. We’re all the same, we’re all the same, we’re all the same….

Regarding women’s participation in elections, I wish it were possible to compare the American case to one in which women had not been accorded the right to vote. If women couldn’t vote, I do imagine the government of the United States wouldn’t be as “nice.” However, the piteous decency of the Americans’ rulers seems to lead to the Americans’ fighting wars without the cruelty wars seem to require, and the cruel result is sacrifices without victories. The Americans’ rulers’ pity and shame also seems to make them unwilling just to leave individuals to fend for themselves. For example, they seem unwilling to exercise even the minimal cruelty required to tell “seniors” they can live at public expense only after they’re 75. The cruel result seems likely to be the financial ruin of the Americans and their “federal” government.

It would be interesting, and probably beneficial, to wring most of the pity out of the “federal” government, because that pity seems to be ruinous. And it seems to be American women’s direct participation in “federal” elections that has done the most to infuse the “federal” government with such ruinous and therefore cruel pity.

Criticism of Michelle Obama’s wardrobe is a relevant topic because every time she makes a public appearance the MSM falls all over itself to tell us how elegant and fashionable she is, but we can see with our own eyes that this is not the case. Seriously, I’ve pent a few $$$ on shoes in my life, but who the flip pays $500 for a pair of glittery Keds with a ribbon laced inthem? It variation on the theme of the Emperor has no clothes; except, the Emperor’s wife has ugly clothes.

She seems to have been coached on her delivery, which otherwise would be louder and toothier. As for the belt, it suggests a bandolier and thus reminds me of the New Yorker cover.

jeanie on September 19, 2009 at 5:03 PM

TI is all about abortion for these leftist feminist women. And the issue with this woman’s outfits is the fact that the MSMs try so hard to make her out to be the next JAckie O re: style contrary to rational thinking; and it is soo ridiculous to ever compare this trampler of style to JAckie O, that pointing out her bafoonish outfits is simply part of the fight against mindless bot brainwashing that claims she is some beauty and a style icon. As to the issues, these people (the obamatons) and their speech writers are really stretching it. It baffles the rational mind to think that socialized medicine that they are pushing is a woman’s issue.

immigrantchick on September 19, 2009 at 5:10 PM

1. Women live longer than men.
2. Of course women bear the responsibility for taking care of the medical needs of their children who normally want their “mommy” when they are sick. I did and do.
3. Who else should take them to the doctor? A cabby? Some governmental slacker from Health and Human Services or some pervert from ACORN?
4. Of course women often are caregivers for sick husbands, especially in their final years. (See #1).
5. What does she expect women, wives, mothers to do? Abdicate everything to the government.

Oh. Nevermind.

Sloan Morganstern on September 19, 2009 at 5:13 PM

Definitely not a fan of Michelle O…but while the outfit she wore for this speech was pretty awful, in general, I think she looks ok. She manages to take a difficult ‘figure fault’ and minimize it pretty well. I should know, since I have the same ‘fault’. Have to give her credit on this score…it’s not easy. Of course, she does not have to deal with off-the-rack clothes so that makes it a lot easier.

Over at Malkin’s site I was was abruptly and usefully reminded of Michelle O’s part in shunting low income patients away from the hospital who employed her in order to save money. I had temporarily forgotten that. Upon recalling that, she immediately lost whatever credibility she might have had. I think the country needs to be reminded of her previous lack of effort on the part of women and families—pronto. She really has a nerve coming off as so self righteous on this issue.

jeanie on September 19, 2009 at 5:51 PM

jeanie on September 19, 2009 at 5:20 PM

Yes, Michelle Obama has some good stylists but they can’t hide her real fault. She’s a hate-filled racist radical and no amount of tailoring hides that kind of ugly. She does a fairly good job at putting up the same kind of facade that her filthy liar of a husband uses to pretend he is a centrist but her ugly real personality keeps bubbling to the surface.

Michelle Obama on ObamaCare: This is very much a women’s issue

Yes, and a racial issue, and a children’s issue… and any other hotbuttons we can push to try to get people emotional and quit thinking rationally about the plan itself.

Because when you’re looking for a health care plan to take over and possibly soon be the only option; you don’t want to think rationally about it, you want a quick emotive response.

I think this will work perfectly. Nobody wants to think and debate and decide about their health care… nobody wants choices. They just want to have the right “feeling” even if it doesn’t work and is a miserable bureaucratic failure.

Does that belt mean that Michelle won the WWF title or something? It doesn’t have a buckle or placard.

What is it for? What does it do? It certainly must have some kind of utilitarian purpose since it can’t be for aesthetic reasons.

It can’t be a flea collar, that would go around her neck. It can’t really be a belt either since it is way above her waistline. Does it come with a leash? I can’t see one. She seems untethered and can freely move around at will.
I’m confused.

Making fun of a person’s appearance lessens the impact of the argument on the issues. Some things are better left said in private as opposed to a public blog viewed by thousands attempting to consider the debate on the merits.
