A note about our comment section

We love our comment section and our commenters, as they almost always provide an extended level of dialogue, debate, and fun here at Hot Air. As we have grown in traffic and impact, our comment sections have grown accordingly — and that’s wonderful. We try to open our registration on a regular basis to catch newer readers and allow them to participate, because that lends a dynamic element to Hot Air and the analysis provided by myself, Allahpundit, and Michelle Malkin.
However, that increased impact brings increased scrutiny, and also some underhanded tactics designed to discredit us. That doesn’t mean that we haven’t seen problems in our comments section at Hot Air, though. Others have used disparaging comments towards certain politicians and their families that cross the line. We have tried to deal with this on a case-by-case basis, but it has taken an increasing amount of our time, and we’re likely to see more attempts to troll comments as a discrediting tactic. We have been blessed with a great set of regular commenters who see these and notify us when they occur, which allows us to catch most of them.
Given the likelihood of further attempts to attack, we are going to start getting a lot tougher on comments and moderation. We welcome debate and humor, but if you use racial, ethnic, and/or animal terms to describe politicians and their families (I’m certain I don’t need to explain further), your comments will get deleted and your account closed. We have plenty to criticize without getting that ugly and handing our opponents ammunition — and besides, in the end, those attacks just aren’t right. They detract from the overwhelming majority of conscientious commenters in the Hot Air community.
Let’s just keep it on point in the future, please. Thank you for your support and understanding.

That anger spills over here in HotAir’s comment threads — mostly because of people’s frustration with their inability to fight back in any meaningful way.

Well, as long as your mom isn’t name Nancy, Hillary, or work as an Acorn Advisor, I would say, listen to her. Learn from her. You are lucky to have a mom you can talk to. I have one too, a dad too that taught me how important it is to learn about the issues and made a good decision. I realized, when I started working a lot of my money went towards taxes, that I better pay attention. I wanted to keep more of my money and make sure EVERYONE pays their own way. That brought me to the conservative party, the party of small government, lower taxes, and government out of my life. I hope you are able to come to the same conclusion, child.

CJ could write a post, formally distancing himself from the incident and the guilty associate, and issue an apology on behalf of LGF and its readers for the shameful behaviour of the rogue’s “experiment.”
Or he could ignore this thread altogether, since it was clearly a rebuke to HA’s readership in general. *wink*

I noticed that the Nancy stated that he didn’t control things as much in the early days before registration (or something to that effect). Maybe so, but even after registration, he let more than a few questionable comments slide, until about 2007 when he began to see nazis everywhere. Maybe he’s one of the Inglourious Basterds. If fact, this little corner of the innernet was tougher on language and content as far back as my registration.

I agree that the level of some comments could be improved on hotair, but even the worst I have seen do not compare to those of the illiberal blogs. Still, I see the effort to keep hotair working at a higher standard from higher ground to be an admirable one. In fact, the general conservative political stance taken by this blog is indeed the true and correct one. Not that I think anyone always agrees with everything on a given blog unless he or she is the blogger! Now I appreciate the warning, though vague, and I would ask that the bloggers themselves avoid using such terms. To be specific, I have seen certain “animal terms” used by one of the two bloggers here. I cannot recall which one, but you know who you are. And it is not Malkin, for she does not often provide the actual analysis for this blog to the best of my knowledge. That is, I rarely see her name as the byline. We commenters need to police ourselves. But it is crucial that you bloggers do the same for you have the power to influence the tone of the comments. The term I recall used by one of your bloggers was a variation on the term “mule” and though based on a relative of the mule called an “ass” was the one with a common given name beginning with the letter “J” attached to it. Of course a mule is the product of the union between a horse and an “ass” and that is merely fact.
Based on what you have written above, this term does not pass muster, I would think.
Yes, I will continue to police my language to make certain certain obviously pejorative terms do not pass.
Hotair is a haven for many of us, especially for those that post comments on the blogs of the left and the illiberal. I tend to post more comments there than here, because they need the education!

CJ’s biggest problem here is that he’s not banning a guy who carpet bombed HotAir in the middle of the night with n bombs. He wants to claim that he had nothing to do with it (which implies he understands it was despicable), but won’t take action against the guy who did it. A simple apology, and subsequent removal of KT’s moderation rights, would have been the easy and honorable thing to do.
His lack of action and persistent whining is intellectually shallow, which is right in line with his 2 line arguments presented as holy gospel posts that he struggles to muster every few hours.

I just find it stunning & telling that Charles has decided to stand by Killgore. He has plenty of other longtimers there he could replace him with.
Especially since , as noted, he has been on this “guilt by association” crusade.

I know. I was using the comment to call Charles out. I actually still have an account over there which hasn’t been banned (because I’ve only posted 2 comments in the last 3 years or so, one of which was deleted).
I know Charles is reading this: Man up, dude. Your blog used to be awesome. Now it’s an echo chamber with the depth of a rain filled pot hole. Ban Kilgore for his despicable stunt, which by claiming you had nothing to do with you implicitly acknowledge was a horrible thing to do to a blog of HotAir’s caliber.
