Video: Pelosi chokes up over potential for political violence

posted at 3:36 pm on September 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Never mind, of course, that we’ve already seen political violence — it’s coming from the unions. And from ObamaCare supporters, such as the protester in Tucson who elbowed a man to the head after disrupting a Tea Party forum. The incitement is coming from groups supporting ObamaCare like HCAN, who trains their followers on how to disrupt town-hall forums and create turmoil.

Is Pelosi all choked up about those groups, or calling for them to take responsibility for the violence, actual and potential, that they incited this summer? Of course not:

Asked at a news conference on Capitol Hill about the possibility of anti-government rhetoric leading to violence, Pelosi, D-Calif., started to choke up as she recalled violent episodes that took place in San Francisco.

“I have concerns about some of the language that is being used because I saw — I saw this myself in the late ’70s in San Francisco, this kind of — of rhetoric was very frightening and it gave — it created a climate in which we — violence took place,” Pelosi said.

“And so I wish that we would all, again, curb our enthusiasm in some of the statements that are made, understanding that — that some of the people — the ears it is falling on are not as balanced as the person making the statement might assume,” she said.

“But, again, our country is great because people can say what they think and they believe, but I also think that they have to take responsibility for any incitement that they may cause.”

In 1978, former San Francisco city supervisor Dan White shot and killed Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk inside City Hall. Milk was at the time the highest-ranking openly gay elected official in the country.

Pelosi knew both Moscone and Milk as a Democratic Party activist in the 1970s.

It wasn’t political debate that drove Dan White to commit murder. He was a lunatic. At his trial, White tried to evade responsibility for his acts in part through arguing that he had a diminished capacity caused in part by his diet, which led to it being ridiculed as “the Twinkie defense.” White only got sentenced to a short term in prison, which was a grave injustice. He should have gotten two life terms for the murders, which was a good argument for a better approach in California to law and order.

Milk and Moscone’s murder has nothing to do with political debate, and no one other than White was responsible for the murders. Pelosi wants to silence opposition since she cannot outargue it, and her implied references to the murders of Milk and Moscone as somehow comparable to political opposition to the Obama administration is flat-out despicable.

Update: It’s also worth pointing out that Dan White was not a right-wing politician; he was a registered Democrat and considered a moderate. He assassinated Moscone after the mayor refused to reappoint him as supervisor, a post White had resigned but then regretted leaving. He shot Milk five times on the way out of City Hall after personal animosity between the two had erupted earlier over a zoning dispute.

Are Pelosi and the Dems trying to start a race war so they can declare martial law to control the unruly rightwingers?

How about it Nancy? How’s that Charlie Manson thing working for you. Helter Skelter II.

No bar is too low for the filthy liar and his corrupt party. The partisan whore who has done much to taint the atmosphere in DC has no room to talk about uncivil behavior.

These bums are throwing everything they can find in their toilets. First the race card and now the violence card. They are indeed as slimy as I’ve always thought they were. Go to hell Nancy, it’s called political dissent and it’s our right . . . perhaps you remember it from the 60s and 70, and even during the previous 8 years. If it’s getting to tough for you then get out of the business but don’t attempt to extinguish our Constitutional rights.

She is stupid. SHe dishonest when she attacks the CIA and lies about them. She lied about consent for waterboarding. I suspect she thinks freedom for terrorists in cuba will make the world a safe and happy place again, but the religious right is the wicked group.

If the Speaker of the House is afraid of protesting than she needs to resign. We need strong leadership not little old ladies who get scared by watching TV. It’s time to retire Nan I don’t feel sympathy for her, I feel PITY.

A member of the United States Of America’s CONGRESS, chokes up about watching coverage of Protest? Protest against their over reaching government, and she thinks they are the scary ones? NANCY it’s WE THE PEOPLE, not WE THE ONES WHO ANSWER TO NANCY PELOSI. You are a Government worker, you work for us not the other way around. You are a PUBLIC SERVANT and NOT a very good one.

This woman should never have been made Speaker of the House it should have gone to Jane Harman.

I guess wonderful disrupters is in the eye of the beholder
! What a freakin pant load Nancy Pelosi is, and her entire group of Progressive wingnuts.

This remark has as much credibility as her trying to educate people on the Catholic view of when life begins.

AnninCA on September 18, 2009 at 9:38 AM

There she goes. Nanny Nancy, evoking negative emotions of a time and place from which she does not have real roots.

He bio indicates her only connection to the area of which she speaks is via marriage.

Therefore, it makes perfect sense that Nanny Nancy tries to use the ‘Twinkie’ defense to explain why her and her parties polices must be made law.

As usual, she makes absolutely no sense at all, in reality all she and her party wants is to ‘milk’ U.S. out of all of our cents.

I think the real reason she felt like crying is because her poll numbers came into her mind during this speech.

Nancy Pelosi. Never Again.

The moral and intellectual void between this woman’s ears nevers ceases to astonish me. Is there a gutter too low to which this hypocrite won’t descend? How does THIS become Speaker of the House? Is there an American Buffoon reality show on cable I’ve been missing?

Is there anything more ridiculous than this she-ass?

rollthedice on September 18, 2009 at 11:36 AM

I also remember the San Francisco murders though, obviously, I was not there. However, I do recall the circumstances of the case. White was an emotionally disturbed individual who resigned his post, then tried to get it back but was rebuffed by Mayor Moscone. He then got a gun and killed Moscone and Milk at City Hall. He was later found guilty of manslaughter in the infamous “Twinkie defense” claiming that he wasn’t thinking clearly because he had been subsisting on a junk food diet over a long period of time. It was an outrageous defense, an outrageous verdict and stirred outrage in San Francisco. White was released a few years later and committed suicide.

My point in recounting this incident is to point out that it had nothing to do with ideology or public policy. It concerned a disturbed politician who was lashing out against those he thought had crossed him. No one defended White on any political grounds. In short, this case has nothing to do with what is happening now in the country.

What Pelosi and Maddow are trying to do is use an unrelated event to try and get their opponents to shut up and meekly accept government health care and the massive intrusion of government into our lives. They should be ashamed at drawing such a comparison.

Our here in Texas we just call it a FART and as for her, its one of those that brings tears to your eyes and open windows, nothing inert about it.

Is it time to drive her completely over the edge with this ditty from the 60s? Nancy Pelosi name that tune :)…IF I had a hammer, I’d hammer in the morning….

Well I’ve got a hammer
And I’ve got a bell
And I’ve got a song to sing
All over this land
It’s the hammer of justice
It’s the bell of freedom
It’s the song about love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land

One of the laws of truth that I have observed over the years is that the democratic left always accuses the right of what they have done or would do in a given situation. This assertion that there will be riots and bloodshed is troublesome in that light. 9-12 stands as a testimont to the seriousness of the people who oppose her parties polices and to the nature of the protesters. There were at a mininmum 1.5 million people there and more likely more than 2 million. It took hours for all the people to walk down the streets to the mall, and they were packed tight most of the time. Plenty of black helicopters flying around, so surely they have the photos to prove that the crowd went all the way back to the fountains. Obvioulsly the parks service listened to the dems when it came to how many portapoties to put out. The lines were at all times at least 30 deep for each one of those provided. What is relevent is that the cops, normally busy dealing with disturbances and fights, were standing around and admitedly boared, with nothing to do but watch the people moving around them. One other testiment to the integrety of one of the largest demonstrations in our history is that the trash was picked up and disposed of, as best as could be. There was not enough space in the trash bins, but it was piled up around them as best as could be anyway. That Pelosi sees danger of vilolence from protestors who participated in tea parties, townhalls and 9-12, who have consistently been the victim of the left violence, is indicative of derangement and delusions on her part. Someone needs to tell her they have medications for that and point her to the nearest government run mental health center. With some luck she will be cared for by some former ACORN office administrators, if they have time after taking care of the young girls.

Seems that Madame Speaker doesn’t like the rough and tumble of the incoming discourse…

Speaker Mimi: please resign and go back to your NON-UNION HOTEL in Northern California… The one YOU won’t let unionize…

Everyone here is aware that Dan White, the assassin of Harvey Milk was a Democrat?

So we should all fear Democrat violence. Oh wait, we on the right believe in the second amendment.

patch on September 18, 2009 at 7:05 PM

Methinks Queen Nan’s memory of 1970s political violence is a bit, ah, selective.

Within this array of leftist activity hide the underground revolutionaries. They strike and burrow underground again in such places as the working-class neighborhoods of Los Angeles and the Mission District in San Francisco or the squalid slums of East Oakland and Sacramento. In addition, many terrorists are believed to be hiding among the students and transient street people of Berkeley’s South Campus section. Furtive meetings between the underground and aboveground activists undoubtedly take place in the area’s many coffeehouses, bars and parking lots. Other good meeting places are the parks known to students as People’s Park and Ho Chi Minh Park.
State and federal law-enforcement officials admit that they know little about California’s revolutionary underground. Charles Bates, chief of the San Francisco FBI office, points out that the groups are small, tightly knit, deeply suspicious of strangers, and thus virtually impossible to infiltrate.
What is known is that the groups are growing increasingly violent. FBI officials suspect that radicals have committed some of the state’s recent unsolved murders. Among these is the slaying of Wilbert (“Popeye”) Jackson, a black activist who the FBI believes was killed because radicals suspected—incorrectly—that he was a squealer. Last year the radicals claimed responsibility for 19 bombings in California; so far this year they have set off 50.
Many California radicals follow the teachings of Mao, Che Guevara, French Revolutionary Regis Debray and Carlos Marighella, the Brazilian terrorist tactician. Marighella advocates violence as a way to encourage government authorities to overreact. He theorizes that a government will inevitably impose harshly repressive measures that will “radicalize” nonviolent citizens and thus bring on the revolution.

Well now, isn’t that special.

Why does the bride of Lucifer cite the Great Twinke case when it has nothing to do with the current situation.

Nancy Pelosi turned her back on Christianity when she joined the party of infanticide and chose to worship the demon Molech over Christ.

You may have forgotten this one:
