Video: Creigh Deeds gets very confused about taxes

Creigh Deeds came out of nowhere to win the Democratic nomination for governor in Virginia — and he’s heading back to nowhere if he continues to give answers like this. Deeds starts off by saying, “I have no plans to raise taxes,” but then says the opposite when it comes to raising money for transportation. When reporters try to square that statement with his claim in the debate that he would not raise taxes, Deeds then says that pledge only applied to general fund taxes, which led to the next question as to whether Deeds realized that gas taxes go into the general fund and are not earmarked for transportation.  That’s when Deeds snaps at the reporter, referring to her as “young lady” when scolding her — and realizes his mistake a moment too late:

DEEDS: I think I’ve made myself clear, young lady.

REPORTER: I’m sorry, I’m not trying to be mean — I’m just trying to understand.

So are Virginia taxpayers, for that matter.  Deeds made a pretty categorical statement in the debate against raising taxes, and then reversed himself on transportation.  It’s easy to understand; Deeds flip-flopped, and got caught.

Jim Geraghty calls it “Kerryesque,” which may be a bit unfair … to John Kerry.  After all, his convoluted statement actually did reflect Congressional reality; it was Kerry’s inability to understand how it sounded outside the Beltway that sunk him.  Jim also notes that Deeds’ harping on his opponent’s 20-year-old college thesis has worn out its welcome, too:

Deeds, however, came back to the thesis several times. When he did so near the end of the debate, groans came from some in the crowd of about 500 northern Virginia business leaders.

Even the reporters are groaning in this clip.  By the time November rolls around, no one will be listening.

You vote for Democrat, you deserve the bigger more expensive government you end up with.

If you’re then surprised they lied to you, that’s your fault, not theirs.

It will be interesting to see if the WaPo bothers to cover this one or if they’ll call it a distraction from his opponent’s college thesis.

That was painful.

That’s okay, the WaPo will cover for him and explain to the electorate what he really meant.

d1carter on September 17, 2009 at 5:33 PM

The song by Fleetwood Mac, “I’m Over My Head” comes to mind.

Actually, it apply’s to Obama as well.

We can’t cut anything. We have to raise new funds. It’s the Democrat way.

It will make a nice victory with New Jersey

rob verdi on September 17, 2009 at 5:34 PM

This is worse than Kerry flip-flops, this is assuming the public is SO stupid that they don’t know raising taxes means….wait for it…….RAISING TAXES.

Anyone who votes for him will get their taxes raised…pretty simple to see.

EVERYBODY
You gotta look at moment 1:17 of that video. It’s priceless. He inhales and looks directly into the camera videotaping him. You can just see the “Oh Shit, this is going on You Tube” moment when he realizes he’s been caught.

Butters on September 17, 2009 at 5:36 PM

Bottom line: He is going to raise taxes.

Arrogant, condescending, and wrong. No wonder he got his party’s nomination.

NebCon on September 17, 2009 at 5:37 PM

If a politician wants to promise not to raise taxes, at least specify which tax won’t go up as the others do.

“I won’t raise state income tax,” for instance.

Newsbusters has already busted the WaPo on this. They buried the story while putting a front page story about how Deeds is a fundraising superstar.

I believe that we should RUN AGAINST THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY next year and in 2010.

Don’t run against the individual candiates.

It won’t take much to convince the American people that the Democratic Party is controlled by radical marxists – and that even a vote for a “blue dog” is a vote for the Democratic Socialist radical agenda.

How can any of them defend against it. Make it simple … A vote for a Republican is a vote AGAINST SOCIALISM.

Period.

In order to vote democrat in this country, you’ve just got to admit that your brain is a big fried pile of mush. There’s just no other explanation for why anyone could pull the lever next to a democrat’s name. No other explanation than a brain of pure mush. I honestly think “I’m a democrat” is going to be included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in my lifetime.

We already do. It’s called the Dulles Toll Road, which led to the whole expansion into the Ashburn/Leesburg area. NO traffic, paved roads, manicured shoulder areas and NO trash.

Butters on September 17, 2009 at 6:08 PM

Don’t worry, the WaPo’s boy will carry Arlington and Fairfax and probably most of the Hampton Roads. Virginia should do herself a favor and just make it an official split between northern VA and the sane VA (Hampton Roads area would get cancelled out in this scenario)

You know, that line of BS about the Republicans being the same as the Demoncraps is really starting to wear thin.

What is that about the 5 billionth time that been repeated??

Do you really think that’s a really profound statement of here to fore unknown truth that ONLY you have discerned?

So what the H**l is YOUR solution to the issue?

You make the stunningly Unprofound statement that sometimes Politicians and just politicians and they want to just go and buy votes.

Gee, Gold star for you!!! You alone have discovered the truth!!

So again, what’s your solution to the problem, or hasn’t your thinking progressed to that point?

Zam88 on September 17, 2009 at 6:10 PM

Sometimes repubs do lie. They’re usually RINO’s.

Elect a conservative, and you’ll get less government. That’s what we’re after.

Problem is this:

Conservative democrats don’t exist.

And Conservative Repubs are in very short supply.

Chaz706 on September 17, 2009 at 6:17 PM

That should be:

You make the stunningly Unprofound statement that sometimes Politicians ARE just politicians and they want to just go and buy votes.

Deeds, however, came back to the thesis several times. When he did so near the end of the debate, groans came from some in the crowd of about 500 northern Virginia business leaders.

Even the Washington Post has more or less decided that they can’t turn this into a rerun of when they were able to get rid of George Allen and replace him with a creepy author of pedophile pornography. Northern Virginia business leaders are interested in taxes, not decades old thesis statements.

I liked the Deeds meltdown but I was more fascinated to watch the weird little wonk that was attached to Deeds backside.

highhopes on September 17, 2009 at 7:29 PM

Deeds also made the statement that northern Virginia is a cash cow. Apparently, he doesn’t realize how that raises the hackles of his democratic constituency in N. Va. because that’s what N. Virginia has always complained about, i.e., we send all of our money to Richmond and get very little in return. He may lose his Dem. base in N. Va. with statements like that.

All Deeds ads do is harp on that thesis. It’s got no traction (he’s already got the ones who claims of burkah’s on women would resonate). McDonnell’s ads have gotten better too- the ones with his whole family being all too cozy were pretty annoying.

highhopes on September 17, 2009 at 7:48 PM

McDonnell only has a 5 point lead. I’d like to see Kaine (Governor and Chairman of Democrat National Committee) and Sen Warner dirtied up a little. They might be able to pull the election out for Deeds.

Kaine as Chairman of Democrat National Committee is dividing his time between chairman and governor and that should be pushed. Plus Warner has voted in lockstep with the Democrats even though he talks like a moderate.
