Gallup: Obama under 50% on Afghanistan, economy, health care, deficit

posted at 12:16 pm on September 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

It’s safe to say that the magic of Barack Obama’s personal appearances have completely worn out with the American public.  A week after his major address to Congress on health care, Gallup shows Obama’s polls sinking, not just overall, but on a range of policies.  In fact, he scores his highest issue rating on Iraq, of all issues, and only at 56%.  On the rest, Obama is heading for the deep end of the pool:

Of the seven specific issue approval ratings measured in a Sept. 11-13 USA Today/Gallup poll, President Obama gets his highest rating (56%) on his handling of Iraq, and his lowest (38%) on the federal deficit. Obama’s approval ratings on handling the economy and healthcare, at 46% and 43%, respectively, are little changed over the past two months.

In the Sept. 11-13 survey, Obama’s overall job approval rating is 54%. Of the seven issues tested, only for Iraq is Obama’s approval rating higher than his overall approval rating. His ratings on five of the issues — energy policy, Afghanistan, the economy, healthcare policy, and the federal budget deficit — are below his overall approval rating, while his rating on handling the environment is identical to his overall rating.

Obama won the election mainly on the economy, with his populist schtick striking a chord during an economic crisis.  He started off his presidency with a 59% approval rating on economics.  It’s now at 46%, with 51% disapproving of his economic policies.

The White House hoped for a “game-changer” on health care with Obama’s speech to the joint session of Congress eight days ago.  They got a huge shrug from their survey of adults, which should be the most sympathetic survey type for Obama.  Approval remains at 43%, where it was in mid-August, but disapproval has climbed from 49% to 52%.  People are making up their minds about Obama on health care instead of reconsidering after his speech, and that’s bad news for the White House and Congressional Democrats.

The biggest drop comes from Obama’s handling of the deficit.  He started with a narrow 49%-44% lead on this issue, but has taken a beating since it inverted in the spring.  It’s now a 20-point gap of disapproval, 58%-38%, which directly impacts both the health-care and cap-and-trade debates.

Rasmussen’s tracking poll surveys likely voters, and shows Obama dropping once again after a slight respite after his speech:

Overall, 47% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President’s performance. Fifty-two percent (52%) now disapprove. Over the past week, the President’s ratings bounced to their highest level in two months but have now retreated to earlier levels. …

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday shows that 32% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty percent (40%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -8 (see trends).

Obama’s team has always relied on his ability to woo voters from the stump.  Unfortunately, Obama didn’t even try to woo them with his last speech.  He gave an angry, partisan screed that attempted to draw lines in the sand, but in the end boxed Obama into unpopular positions.  Americans looking to Obama for leadership, post-partisanship, and moderation have become disillusioned after a mere eight months.  The Jedi mind tricks have apparently stopped working, and until Obama begins to abandon his radical agenda, he will continue to decline in the polls.

Looking for official talking points on nutroots blogs?

O’Keefe, Giles and Breitbart releasing the ACORN tapes piecemeal has undermined the left’s efforts to “hit back immediately, hit back hard”. They have used the progressives’ aggression against them, and now the left is suffering a bit of a crisis of confidence. Retorting to everything immediately with lies is starting to backfire on them in a big way.

Only thing he won’t tell you is that if Chicago gets the Olympics, taxes in the city are going to go through the stratosphere as it will be the citizens of Chicago who will be expected to pay the bill for the Games. Mayor Shortshanks Daley has already taken care of that minor aspect.

Obladioblada:

According to Biggov.com this was filed last month. It’s the third story on the web page. Here is what it says…

Big Government has obtained copies of subpoenas issued last month to ACORN by the state of Louisiana. We are working to determine the status of this and other investigations. ACORN operates in 46 states. 45 more of these would move us much further towards full transparency and accountablity.

milwife88 on September 17, 2009 at 1:02 PM

But it is cable. We need to reach the audience that is so totally brainwashed now. It is still the network news that gets the biggest audiences. The cable news is a smaller market.
Actually, I doubt they would sell to Murdock but someone who can turn their news departmants into real news again. Someone like Murdock then.
If just one of those stations covered real news in a honest way. And at this point honestly needs to screw right to make up for the heavy lean left of everything else. It would likely pull the other networks back to the middle… But I guess that CNN and MSNBC haven’t moved to the middle.
I wish we could just convince airports etc. to play Fox instead of CNN we could get more truth out there.
petunia on September 17, 2009 at 12:41 PM

That’s a good point about cable, I guess it would be nice to have some balance in the broadcast news – maybe Fox could that.
I have faith that the free market could right the ship of the SCM, it’s listing so far to the Left these days it’s only a matter of time before it capsizes and goes bottom up.

Exactly. But as the racism charges get more and more tedious and rediculous, people will finally, finally, tire of it and won’t be afraid to disapprove to overall job performance and likability.

Yes, but how is he polling with school children?

bloggless on September 17, 2009 at 2:11 PM

Obama scores very well with those schoolchildren who get to skip school with ACORN’s help. Especially the sex slaves.

Loxodonta on September 17, 2009 at 2:18 PM

I got a call from Rasmussen last night. Kind of cool — never gotten a call from a “real” (recognized) pollster before. A couple of questions in there last night about ACORN.

Do you think they will try the “you all don’t want him because he is an illegal immigrant” rabbit?

Good point Bloggless…next up will be Latinaphobes. Then, Obama will come out of the closet and we’ll all be homophobes! Then, he could join PETA, but I don’t even want to go there!

orlandocajun on September 17, 2009 at 2:26 PM

I expect Obama’s approval ratings will soon begin to edge upward as his biggest cheering section is getting down to some serious business and gearing up to announce that we are on the road to Paradise in America!

ABC prominently announced this morning that the “RECESSION IS OVER!!!” (although unemployment will continue to be high for a while) People are spending money they don’t have again, the unicorns are shooting rainbows out of their horns and the fairies are fluttering about in joy!

All is right in the world (or soon will be)thanks be to The One – or so says the MSM

Fatal on September 17, 2009 at 2:31 PM

Imagine how much lower these numbers would be if respondents were not afraid of being labelled racist. Now that this card has been overplayed, watch the rapid descent.

singer on September 17, 2009 at 2:33 PM

Economy is a house of cards at the moment, with the market being pumped and primed by CNBC talkies and their ilk. Look at the sobering numbers from the Philly Fed released today.

When everyone is all in, expect a major pullback in the market to strip out what’s left of the wealth.

singer on September 17, 2009 at 2:36 PM

Poll taken four days ago. I can’t wait to see the numbers now that the ACORN scandal is now full blown.

Does Gallup poll Eastern Europeans currently living here? Let’s see those numbers, shall we.

Knucklehead on September 17, 2009 at 12:24 PM

Thanks to the MSM, most folks don’t even know about the ACORN scandal.

Darth Hussein?

Darth Teleprompter?

Darth Spendus?

Keep wiggling the handle on the toilet till this turd finally goes down.

Maybe we need to call joe the plumber to get this turd pushed through the pipes and out to the septic tank already.

I think one of the problems here is that the liberals are using to much cash as toilet paper, it’s done clogged the head.

The Donks aren’t even treading water anymore. Its heartbreaking. Someone…anyone…please…throw them a rusty boat anchor.

Geochelone on September 17, 2009 at 3:16 PM

Can someone please explain how BHO’s approval ratings on all but one issue are under water, but the overall is still at 56%?

With The One now in command of wiretaps & with the demonstrated Orwellian desires to track opponents, as seen with the fishy@whitehouse.org site. Plus legislation pending on internet control/surveillance, is not possible people are afraid to answer the “overall” performance question?

These polls are taken over Com wires afterall. With the evidence of authoritarian proclivities increeasing daily, how comfortable are you with answering candidly with Ogabe possibly listening in?

I am trying to keep prospective on this stuff. But, other than BHO allowing acouple of pirates to be taken out, is there anything or any act that you can say you find reassurring?

Chavez, Zelya, Silence while Iranians oppressed, missle shield abandonment, Cold shoulder to the “cousins”, pressure on Israel and coziness with domestic commies, terrorist or otherwise. Just when can somebody callit for what it definately appears to be…..A Manchurian Candidate!

There, I said it!

Obama on suicide watch yet?

Jeff from WI on September 17, 2009 at 3:22 PM

Even though come 2010 democrats will be touting a 4000+ point gain in the DOW since Obama took office, without jobs it wont be enough.

ernesto on September 17, 2009 at 2:00 PM

A small point needs to be pointed out on this 4000pts thing.
The Dow is quoted in dollars, which made even the minimal (since 9/11) gains of the Bush years moot. Those qouted dollars in ’01 were worth 27% less in ’08. That means that effectively the Dow quoted in those dollars is worth 27% less as well.

When bush left the money supply, paper money in circulation, was appx $800,000,000,000. Since Ogabe took over he and Bernacke have escalated this disaster to 1,700,000,000,000. The resultant devaluation of the dollars this will inevitably cause?

A catastrophic implosion.

Any market #’s pointed to that quote in dollars as a sign of recovery, is pure smoke & mirrors. The disastering looming just over the horizon, cannot be overstated.

Sooo what do you think the first question to Barack about Acorn will be on the Sunday shows, and who will ask it? Just curious. /sarc because it will never happen.

txmomof6 on September 17, 2009 at 3:59 PM

O’Keefe, Giles and Breitbart releasing the ACORN tapes piecemeal has undermined the left’s efforts to “hit back immediately, hit back hard”. They have used the progressives’ aggression against them, and now the left is suffering a bit of a crisis of confidence. Retorting to everything immediately with lies is starting to backfire on them in a big way.

forest on September 17, 2009 at 12:54 PM

Andrew is a freaking genius! These three are heroes and the Left’s worst nightmare. I mean, doncha just love the way he had O’Keefe and Giles parse this stuff out. Plus the way Andrew’s “managed” them during their appearances on Fox. All three of these folks are using Alinsky right back at the Left, letting little dribs and drabs come out and, when asked about whether there’s more, answering in effect, “Maybe.”.

I’d give almost anything to be a fly on the wall of the ACORN and DNC boiler rooms. ll bet that there’s a fury there unkown in modern times. They’re probably working overtime to get some dirt on Breitbart, O’Keefe, and Giles.

It may get asked, but it will be a softball lobbed up there so the Pantload-in-Chief can whack it out of the park. Expect the response to be some mealy-mouthed blandishment, mumbled between interminable “uuuuuuuuuhs” while his shifty eyes dart around the room.

4,000 point gain my ass. Today, we’re about 120 point up but unemployment is 3.2% South from when this fool was elected. Courtesy of Cj over at “The Illustrated Conservative”:

The Obama Baseline 11-04-08
The inflation rate was 3.7%
Unemployment was 6.5%
The prime was at 4%
The Dow closed at 9,625
The NASDAQ closed at 1,780
The S&P closed at 1,005
Oil was $60 a barrel.

Obama has pissed away one of the most important things for a leader: integrit or credibility.

Not that he ever had any in the first place, but Americans are gradually figuring it out.

Chicago machine thug he is.
