Biden: Iran not a threat
posted at 11:36 am on September 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Why has the Obama administration decided to toss eastern Europe under the bus in order to make nice with Russia? According to CNN, Joe Biden says that a missile-defense system in Europe isn’t really necessary, because Iran isn’t much of a threat. No, really:
Vice President Joe Biden earlier refused to confirm to CNN that the George W. Bush-era plan was being shelved.
But he did explain the logic of doing so, saying Iran — a key concern for the United States — was not a threat.
“I think we are fully capable and secure dealing with any present or future potential Iranian threat,” he told CNN’s Chris Lawrence in Baghdad, where he is on a brief trip.
“The whole purpose of this exercise we are undertaking is to diminish the prospect of the Iranians destabilizing that region in the world. I am less concerned — much less concerned — about the Iranian potential. They have no potential at this moment, they have no capacity to launch a missile at the United States of America,” he said.
This recalls Obama’s analysis of the Iranian threat from April 2008:
Strong countries and strong presidents talk to their adversaries. That’s what Kennedy did with Khrushchev. That’s what Reagan did with Gorbachev. That’s what Nixon did with Mao. I mean, think about it. Iran, Cuba, Venezuela — these countries are tiny, compared to the Soviet Union. They don’t pose a serious threat to us the way the Soviet Union posed a threat to us. And yet, we were willing to talk to the Soviet Union at the time when they were saying, ‘We’re going to wipe you off the planet.’
And ultimately, that direct engagement led to a series of measures that helped prevent nuclear war, and over time, allowed the kind of opening that brought down the Berlin Wall. Now, that has to be the kind of approach that we take. You know, Iran, they spend one-one hundredth of what we spend on the military. If Iran ever tried to pose a serious threat to us, they wouldn’t stand a chance. And we should use that position of strength that we have, to be bold enough to go ahead and listen. That doesn’t mean we agree with them on everything. We might not compromise on any issues, but at least we should find out other areas of potential common interest, and we can reduce some of the tensions that has caused us so many problems around the world.
Nuclear weapons and long-range missiles in the hands of millenial Islamist lunatics in Tehran? No big threat … to us. Why should we risk annoying Russia to protect our allies against it? After all, Russia will use its influence to stop Iran from getting nukes, right? Right? Er …
Imposing swift additional sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme would be a “serious mistake,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday.
“Today there is a real chance to conclude talks whose results should be an agreement restoring trust in the purely peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear programme,” Lavrov said in televised remarks.
“Disrupting this chance by demanding swift imposition of sanctions would be a serious mistake,” he added.
So we threw our allies under the bus to not get Russian cooperation in isolating Iran’s mullahs? This must be that smart power that Obama’s allies like to proclaim.
Don’t worry, the White House assures everyone. We’re not abandoning the allies who took significant geopolitical risks in standing up to Moscow over the missile-defense shield. The US will still provide some form of missile defense, even if it is much less reliable. Michael Goldfarb explains:
The White House has put out a “fact sheet” on their policy of Russian appeasement/missile defense surrender. The fact sheet says that the new approach — focusing on SM-3 and sea-based systems (presumably in Turkey) — will “augment our current protection of the U.S. homeland against long-range ballistic missile threats.” That is a lie. This system will provide zero, nada, zilch protection to the U.S. homeland, providing only defense against short- and medium-range missiles to Europe.
The fact sheet says this system will protect “our Allies in Europe sooner and more comprehensively than the previous program, and involves more flexible and survivable systems.” That is a lie. The system that was being placed in Poland is already operational in Alaska. These new plans will now take years of negotations to implement and will necessarily be less survivable as they will not be underground.
The fact sheet says that “The Czech Republic and Poland, as close, strategic and steadfast Allies of the United States, will be central to our continued consultations with NATO Allies on our defense against the growing ballistic missile threat.” That is a lie. The Czechs and Poles get a midnight phone call from the president while Tauscher is already in the air. They were not consulted with and have been given no assurances — because the president is selling them out.
The fact sheet says, “We also welcome Russian cooperation to bring its missile defense capabilities into a broader defense of our common strategic interests.” If that’s true, our president is totally clueless about Russian capabilities and intentions — even Bush, who looked into Putin’s soul, was not so delusional as to think U.S. missile defense could be dependent on Russian good will and cooperation. How long til the Russians threaten to throw us out of our “joint” missile defense facilities in order to coerce us into staying out of an attack on Georgia or some other democratic state in their near abroad.
We’ve sold out the Poles and the Czechs, who have seen the West do this before. The Times of London should get the last word here. Smart power, indeed:
By trading the loyalty of Poland and the Czech Republic to satisfy Russia’s security concerns, the United States is signalling that it no longer contests Moscow’s right to assert its interests in Eastern Europe.
Ukraine and Georgia’s chances of entering Nato over Russian objections have diminished further. The timing is disastrous for Ukraine in particular, given the Kremlin’s determination to reverse the pro-Western Orange Revolution and ensure victory for a pro-Russian candidate at presidential elections in January.
The Baltic States, already in Nato, will be feeling a chill as they ponder an even more assertive Russia. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have been among the Kremlin’s most vocal critics but Nato’s new Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has declared a “true strategic partnership” with Russia his top priority.
The Bush Administration delighted in emphasising relations with the “new Europe” of former Soviet bloc countries, often at the expense of recalcitrant “old Europe” of Germany and France on foreign policy.
Mr Obama has shown that the US is no longer playing that game. He wants Russian help on Afghanistan and Iran and is leaving Europe to resolve its own relationship with Moscow on everything from energy security to historical grievances.
The Kremlin can barely believe its good fortune. Mr Obama has pressed the “reset” button to improve relations without obtaining anything more than permission for US aircraft to cross Russian airspace on resupply operations for troops in Afghanistan.

Polticians.
We need to get to the “root cause” here.
And if you think financial interests can manipulate powerful politicians to go against the intersts of the American people, then you must be open to the possibility (I would say probability) that the Obama Administration has been compromised in some way to do something that is so very much against the interests of the American people, in betraying allies and in needlessly exposing our interests to hostile nations.

The number of civilians killed is irrelevant. Also if that’s one of your criterion, Iran is a bad actor in the Middle East (it obviously is). Iran has had it’s hands in the most, if not all of the violence that has plagued the Middle East since 1979. Like I said before, Lebanon, Syria, Israel, Iraq, etc. I won’t bother going into detail, but I think you would benefit from looking into how Iran is.
That being said, as an American, you should not take Iran’s presence on the international stage lightly. They have the ability to kill YOUR countrymen in Afghanistan and Iraq. Furthermore they supply our enemies who try and have succeeded in killing Americans throughout the Middle East. Are you familiar with William Buckley, the former U.S. in Beirut or the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut? While Iran does not pose a major convential threat to the U.S., it has the ability to hurt everyone in a backhanded way. The main threat that Iran poses is its exportation of violence through it’s intelligence service (which does not have its hands tied behind its back like the CIA) and through its proxies. The danger with nuclear weapons is not so much the likelihood of a missile launch, but rather the use of a dirty bomb which does not leave finger prints as easily.
You need to take a step back and realize that as an American the lives of your countrymen are in danger. Drop the American devil meme spouted by liberals and realize that bad people are trying to kill us.

Well I’m with you that politicians are using the government to enrich themselves and their friends, at the expense of the general worker and taxpayer. Their friends are also defense contractors though, and they’re always looking to appease that very powerful lobby as well. Making war is the best way for that. Making things unstable or flat out creating conflict is how that lobby gets paid.

I understand all the covert operations that Iran takes part in and it’s despicable. Unfortunately, so are our actions in the middle east, in my opinion. We’ve killed a multitude of civilians in order to…..reduce civilian casualties. We’ve killed scores more than the deaths of 9/11. It’s counter productive and lives are being ruined every day. The people don’t want us in their countries and the American public have grown sour as well. When the government has the money to make war but not feed the people, we’re in trouble. I’m a conservative. I don’t want another country to come here and harass me, destroy my infrastructure and kill innocents. I follow the golden rule.

Sorry I thought it was obvious. We’ve preemptively invaded Iraq and Afghanistan.
Possibly to try and get them to toe the line on Iran. Or to secure supply routes for Afghanistan. Ironically, to the people being “targeted” by the missile shield, it’s considered offensive because, for instance, if America were to attack Russia with missiles, they could not retaliate because of the missile shield. This is how Russia and also China perceive the shield so it makes sense why they wouldn’t want it around.

I think you’ve grossly over simplified the missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. The missions in Iraq and Afghanistan are beyond humanitarian issues. In both missions we dealt/are dealing with rogue actors who supported terrorism(Afghanistan), and pretended (or possessed and did a superb job at hiding them elsewhere) to have WMDs. For the past few years we have been attempting to rebuild these nations so that they do not repeat their past behaviors. While I agree the killing of innocent civilians is counterproductive, it is completely ridiculous to allow rogue states to continue to threaten peace, stability, and innocents as well. Americans are not the aggressors. We do not invade “good countries” that operate as rational actors on the international stage.
In regard to your last statement, you need to realize that American power and safety is a global issue rather than one that solely resides within the borders of the US.

BZZZZZT…. No.. I am sorry, that is incorrect, but thank you for playing. Obviously you must be one of those KosKiddies who has never lived under the Cold War. Let me enlighten you on a little concept called Mutually Assured Destruction. Russia still has more than enough nuclear capability to destroy the US several times over. I am not sure of China’s numbers but I am sure they are high as well. Even a 90% reduction of the number of nukes heading our way in a full preemptive strike against us would STILL be more than enough to destroy the US. The missile shield in Europe is not designed to stop that kind of attack. Also, that does not stop the sub launched nor the bomber launched attacks either. It is intended to DETER the use of missiles against targets in Europe from countries like Iran and Pakistan. They have neither range nor the number to penetrate fully a ballistic missile shield. By removing the missile shield agreement with Eastern Europe, not only has 0bama effectively sold out our allies to future Russian aggression (and they are trying to return to the their former USSR glory days), but also allows the smaller nuclear countries (Iran and Pakistan) a free and open shot at Israel or Europe.
0bama caved to the Russians. They have been rattling sabers for months now. Remember the air space penetration by the Russian bomber several months ago or the subs parked off of DC just a couple of months ago? No, they (and the rest of the world) see the US as now weak and will strike very soon thanks to 0bama and Biden (and Congress). China is flexing its naval might in the Pacific as they prepare for the pacification of Taiwan. North Korea will re-invade the South, and we will once again feel the pain of a major terrorist attack all because 53% of you put a limp-spined socialist in the White House.

So all those ‘innocent’ dead Iraqis & Afghanis are in the wrong place at the wrong time. Since they are being used as human shields & they can’t effectively police their own people, it’s tough $hit, just like when Germany was bombed, killing ‘innocents’.
$hit happens in war. It is what it is. The Japanese died bcs they were citizens of a warlike country. It sucks to be them.
So you’re admitting we are great, but it’s ok that we fail?
Our empirical aspirations are nothing like what Russia & China have in mind.
The comparison is stupid.
Look how we cut our own throats economically with ‘Free Trade’. They dump their crap on our market while marking up prices on our stuff on their end-with no reprisals from us.
Badger40 on September 17, 2009 at 1:45 PM
Such lies from Ed Morrissey.
Your headline:
Then by the time you get to the post, you downgrade it to:
(my emphasis added)
But then you look at what Biden actually said in the portion Morrissey quoted, but obviously didnt read:
Right there Biden mentions an Iranian threat. He doesn’t say it doesn’t exist. He just says we can handle it. Would you prefer that he says we can’t handle it? Is that what McCain or Palin would have said? Highly unlikely.
Granted, the CNN report claims that Biden said Iran was not a threat, but you can see that they’re flat wrong if you actually read Biden’s words. (darn liberal media!)
Why pass on CNN’s misinformation? Oh, because it suits you politically. I’d prefer it if you could be more intellectually honest.
(also, Obama pointing out that Iran does not pose nearly the threat to us that the USSR did is plainly obvious. I have no idea why you try to bring that up to smear Obama. Is Iran capable of destroying the earth many times over, as the USSR was? No, they’re not even capable of getting one missile onto the US mainland. It’s not remotely close to the threat of the USSR. This isn’t controversial; it’s a clear fact.)

Same way we reacted to the Iranian uprising–and Neda’s death.

Oh so the 3000 dead INNOCENT americans is ok in your book because they were stateless? You F(**)in’ COWARD! Sorry to say having experienced 9/11 first hand thta day I DISAGREE! The whole Middle East should have been leveled They all played a part in our attack that day! Yes WE HAD A RIGHT TO INVADE THEY INVADED US! I have wasted enough time that I can;t get back on you appeasement A(*&()*)_(s! Oh yeah and I have to geton the subways those MUSLIM KILLERS are targeting now from QUEENS 14 backpacks found full of cell phones! Oh but, what’s a few american lives because of a 4th century mindset! FU!
xler8bmw on September 17, 2009 at 1:46 PM
Stateless actors, huh? Ok, well lets go with your logic train for a moment. While yes they were not fighting under the banner of a country, they ARE fighting under the banner of a religion. Islam. By your logic, should we have then invaded Mecca? Should we have bombed the big cube? After all, that is the ‘capitol’ of those who perpetrated almost all of the terrorist attacks against this country as well as all the others around the world.

Drudge siren:
SECRET REPORT: NUKE AGENCY SAYS IRAN CAN MAKE BOMB
Nice timing on dropping that missile shield, President Toonces!
So does the middle of September have some sort of significance to America-haters? Last year, the financial meltdown. This year, stiff-arming our allies. What the hell?
tsj017 on September 17, 2009 at 1:48 PM
Who are we to decide? Do you want the government deciding what’s best for you? I doubt it. Why should our government decide what’s best for them? We could have spent much less money to secure our borders and internal security. But that doesn’t pay the campaign contributors quite as much does it? No. Defense contractors and oil companies make a killing off war (no pun intended). You think I’m not looking at the big picture, and that’s fine but it’s certainly not coincidence that the occupation of these countries is very geo strategic. North Korea is much more a threat than Iraq or Afghanistan, yet here we are.

MB4, I’m not a complete expert, but I’ve written [classified] articles on damage susceptibility to EMP, and set an undisclosed world record on field strength survived while using a neato-keeno EMP testing device.
IMHO, EMP is not the worry we make it out to be. I’d rather not go into specifics, as most of this is not in the public record. There may be problems.
But we should put our energy into other areas.
With the right leadership, all of this is moot. Our national leadership is where we need to focus.

NEWS FLASH to Poles and Czechs: “You’re on your own”.
You folks should get with the Hondurans and issue a
statement of support for Barry. Something on the order
of “Up yours”. Wonder how all that “European LOVE for
Barry” is working out now?

As a cold war baby I can definitely relate.
Russia never quit her aspirations to be the ONE major world power.
Reading up on the mindset of these people, I am convinced they are a bunch of egomaniacs who desire a return to their glory days as the bully on the block.
China wants this, too, but is a lot more sneaky about it.
I have always told my students to continue worrying about Russia & China: they want to knock us down.
China’s doing it through economics, Russia is desperate to get power back before their neg. population growth starts getting too obvious.
Badger40 on September 17, 2009 at 1:50 PM
And the fact that even the people there are trying to leave. In droves.
It is too bad that they bring their mind set to where ever they inhabit.

That should read Iran HAS nukes. That information is at least a couple of months old and I am sure they are just waiting for the right day to use them. Or they are already making their way here in container ships…

When nobody is making the effort to control themselves or make their own decisions, you either $hit or get off the pot.
Our govt butts in when they can’t get their $hit together.
Like when I have an unrul child near me that’s not my own I will descipline it, regardless, if the parent does not, or isn’t there.
When someone else’s actions affect others, they deserve a thumping. And if we are the only ones will ball$ enough to do the thumping, then so be it.
I personally do not agree with standing around with a thumb up the a$$ waiting for people to amass an attack against me.
When they’re pointing a nuke or a gun in your face & you ain’t ready-guess what?
You die.
No thanks.

I’m sure those dead innocents understand your point. Hope you don’t end up on the wrong end of your theory.
You’re right. We should probably round up all those meany muslims and kill ‘em all.
The Calibur on September 17, 2009 at 1:57 PM
I wasn’t debating you. The comment was directed at someone else, not you. So yeah it’d be pretty confusing for you. It wasn’t in response to anything you said.
The Calibur on September 17, 2009 at 2:01 PM
You & I do not have all the classified intel on who has what & who is doing what-that’s what our govt is supposed to be doing: protecting our interests abroad: economic, polital interests also translate into national security interests.
If someone is maneuvering to isolate an important resource, they may endanger the physical safety of this country.
This is a DUH factor. So going to war over ‘oil’ is also going to war over our SAFETY bcs oil is an important industrial commodity used for economies & WAR & DEFENSE.
And as far as N.Korea being a bigger threat than Iran or Irag:
millions of angry, ideological muslims waiting to kills all infidels wherever they find them & longing to establish a caliphate in the name of their god allah is no small threat.
I’m more afraid of that than the few crazy N. Koreans & the millions of their own people they are starving to death!

To add to your post,
Afghanistan did not possess any where near the armed capabilities that Iran possess right now.
They ended up being pretty dangerous to the US.
I guess to some people, the worlds leading sponsor of terrorism who is responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans,is on the brink of having a nuclear weapon, and has pledged to wipe out a whole country is considered ” I am less concerned — much less concerned — about the Iranian potential”.
Put bluntly: Iran is not much of a threat according to the “smart ones”.

rlwo2008 on September 17, 2009 at 2:04 PM
I absolutely concur!
In a public thread where you make your comments and statements, you may want to keep in mind that all people can read it. Yes you signed up but that doesn’t mean you can not be mocked for your idiotic comments and obvious lack of history dispite the interesting “wordage” you like to associate yourself with.
In conclussion, you were debating me earlier and I told you to “look it up yourself” in which you still have no done. My findings is that you assume someone is going to hand you the items. I.E. Liberal aka a child who is spoiled.
Please be so kind in at least stating your stories with proof rather then speculating and fabricating. You are doing a pis poor job of trying to back up anything you say.
upinak on September 17, 2009 at 2:05 PM
Heh. Hopefully you are not. I take it you would rather save innocent people in enemy countries over your own countrymen?
No national interest in your own country’s soveriegnty or safety?
If I must choose by taking the war to where the pestilence breeds or letting it come to my back door & killing my own family, guess what I choose?
The only muslims that need killing are the ones who continually stir up trouble by murdering infidels all over the world. The ones that wish to mind their own business without trying to kill or subjugate all unbelievers can go in peace.
