ACORN Videos: San Diego and Tijuana Dreaming
posted at 8:46 am on September 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
James O’Keefe, Hannah Giles, and Big Government strike again, this time in the sunny clime of San Diego, California. As they note, San Diego would be a perfect place to smuggle underage Salvadorean girls across the border into the US, but as Juan Carlos from ACORN advises, why bother? Just set up the brothel in nearby Tijuana, where O’Keefe and Giles can operate outside US law. In fact, the ACORN worker offers to partner with them if they do, because he’s got connections across the border:
“I have a lot of connections in Tijuana.”
He’s got a lot of connections, and apparently Juan Carlos is shopping for some social interaction, too:
In the second video, O’Keefe plays with Juan Carlos, telling him that he went to ACORN because some unnamed organization in Oceanside called the cops on them when they started talking about trafficking in 13-year-old girls. Even though Juan Carlos says he has cousins who are cops, he assures O’Keefe and Giles that he won’t drop a dime on them, and that he’ll help get the girls across the border. “Trust the Mexican people,” Juan Carlos says a number of times.
In the other four undercover projects, ACORN offered advice on tax evasion and hiding child prostitution, which was despicable enough. In San Diego, the ACORN staffer wanted a piece of the action. Is this a normal way for ACORN to raise funds?

Yes, it does appear that way, doesn’t it? I wonder if she’ll come out with a strong statement against child prostitution while at the same time refusing to defund ACORN.

Now take these videos, and imagine some guy coming in that needs a safe house for drugs…how many drug dens has ACORN set up?
This prostitution ring is extreme, imagine someone that with a wink says they need a house for distribution of “home” products. How easy it would be for ACORN to turn their back on something that appears more legitimate.

Neither O’Keefe or Hannah have any grammar issues, trackmarks or drug induced tics. Imagine Acorn not catching on when they came in and pretty much said, “Excuse me please, but I would like to inquire about getting a home loan for a brothel? Yes, of course, I will consult with my pimp.” Do whores really talk like that?

What I really want to know, since we’re supposedly going to spend TRILLIONS with groups like ACORN, is WHY do we need them. Are the poor & minorities so stupid that they can’t find a bank for a home loan, or welfare benefits, or any other government freebie, all by themselves??
Jeff from WI on September 17, 2009 at 9:37 AM
O’Reilly sees his chance of interviewing anyone from the administration going down the tubes.
O’Reilly may be one that leaves Fox News, just so he can say he is independent and has a chance to interview these clowns.
Of course to do that he has to bow down to the liberal’s and he is already on one knee.
Saying there is no connection between Obama and ACORN is laughable…they have exchanged hundreds of thousands of dollars, exchanged contact lists, ACORN exclusively campaigned for Obama…when Dick Morris started to list these items, O’Reilly cut him off.

How many offices remember the “performing artists” and are now shaking in their boots?
There are shredders working overtime all across the country in various Acorn offices.
I think James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles should have dropped the bomb all at once so that investigation could have started before the shredding.

Wow. Just wow.
Ed/Allah, PLEASE put that cover up with a story about the left’s cries of racism. It’s one thing to call an adult a racist because you don’t agree. This is something altogether different. If we don’t stop this now by calling it out and exposing the blatant in your face tactic as stupidity revealed, we accept their premise, and their premise is dead-set WRONG.
Oh, and is it not interesting that all of these supposedly disparate outfits suddenly decide to cry racist all at the same time? And I’m curious, what’s their next card when this over-the-top one doesn’t work… which it won’t?
And is it not at all racist for people this side of the border to have no trouble smuggling in 12 and 13 year old El Salvadorian girls to be sex slaves? Yet amazingly no one on the left seems to have any problem with that.

I’m not doubting their bravery or intelligence, but, did they ever have any experience dealing with the underbelly like this before? They are exposing a criminal enterprise in a sensational, personal way. Expect these criminals who have recently been fired to not be the only ones pissed. I just wonder how if they thought about SERIOUS repercussions? These aren’t just petty crimes. And, even though this is who ACORN is (which we always knew, thanks to Michelle Malkin, etc.) it still is borderline entrapment.
Diane on September 17, 2009 at 10:17 AM
Yeah, I agree. The music bed was emphasizing that and was gratuitous. The walk up the stairs, the bit at the end–titillation, for sure. Her having done that is not as damaging to her as seeing the finished product packaged that way, over and over. I only hope she didn’t enjoy too much feeling the power that hot women have over men–and it’s only beginning. All the talking head will be talking about her looks, once they get around to covering the story, and Playboy offers her a spread in 5, 4, 3, 2 . . . She’s young and at a very dangerous age. Reminds of that line from the Sade song–”I’m loaded, don’t know where to point this thing.” Get married Hannah–and don’t take too long about it either.

ACORN claims to have turned O’Keefe and Giles away at several of their offices (including New York if I remember correctly), but I can’t help but wonder whether they turned away one or more other pimp/prostitute business proposals instead. (“We get so many pimps/prostitutes seeking criminal advice, it’s hard to remember which one is which.”)
ya2daup on September 17, 2009 at 10:24 AM
These videos are most comparable to “To Catch a Predator”… it’s the same type of voyeurism, drama, and hilarity… but these ACORN people won’t be charged with anything… and ACORN will probably be able to keep their funding… they will be watched more closely, forced to be more transparent, and will have to train their workers better….
ninjapirate on September 17, 2009 at 10:25 AM
For those who have not been listening for a while, welcome. For the best background on ACORN and Obama, you will need to extensively read “the boss”, Michelle Malkin’s numerous pieces. Start with this one, and then go through her trackbacks for earlier pieces.
barnone on September 17, 2009 at 10:26 AM
It is not entrapment — borderline or otherwise — because no criminal action occurred. The ACORN office workers freely volunteered information which demonstrated their willingness to assist with illegal activities.
ya2daup on September 17, 2009 at 10:31 AM
Obviously this can all be attributed to some rogue Human Resources employee who just happened to be the one to hire the scum of the Earth in these videos. Because we all know ACORN is a honest and virtuous organization that is interested only in lawfully registering unregistered voters and assisting those in need.
And I bet this particular ACORN employee is not actually scum. But just wants to get these two to set up shop in Tijuana so that he and his misguided Mexican brothers can administer a little vigilante justice on their asses outside of US jurisdiction for wanting to pimp children.

Borderline entrapment? Because of what? The hidden camera? Asking questions? Posing as someone you’re not?
Face it. If someone walked into my business, told me they were a pimp and a prostitute and wanted to set up an underage brothel and how best to do that… I would not talk to them for an hour about the best way to game the system, avoid taxes, hide the proceeds, keep the girls from being educated, set up a “group house” to hide what you’re doing, offer use of my “contacts” over the border, proposition the prostitute…
Seriously. Who does these things but someone who lives on the underbelly of life and has no qualms whatsoever about that? Further, can you imagine standing there GIVING this advice with one of your co-workers in the room thinking that your boss could walk in at any moment? Come on. These people weren’t afraid of getting caught. They saw nothing out of the ordinary with these two. All they wanted to do was to HELP them by any illegal (or legal if it worked that way, decent or indecent) way possible.
And lest we forget, they are giving this advice and being paid… BY US! WE are the employer, and apparently they ain’t too worried about us finding out either (though maybe they should have been).

Well, the other ones didn’t really bother me as much. They were crimes. They dealt with the same issues, but, it was slightly less seedy, if that’s possible. It still implicated these people and they certainly acted as if this wasn’t the first time they had heard this. They were prepared to answer these questions.
The man (and it could be because it was a male) seemed more serious, yet, more reluctant. He was interested in Hannah (which made me realize just how dangerous this was for her, in particular) and he had actual information/connections which he seemed willing (for a price) to share. I was wondering who he was calling. When he left the office with them, he still had it. It made me wonder what he was doing/recording? At the same time, we were watching these two cracker jack reporters just selling the story (albeit geekily) and this man was…kind of lured in by Hannah to nearly commit. This is something that law enforcement does PROFESSIONALLY. I don’t know what this all means…I just know this made me feel uncomfortable. I don’t feel badly for the people implicated at all. But, I just think this done without proper oversight seems…weird. Granted, I doubt they thought they’d get these results, really.

I didn’t know what the actual, legal definition of entrapment was. So, is it entrapment for law enforcement to do stings on underage sex solicitation online? Serious question. They do those Dateline exposes all the time.
(rhetorical exit question: wonder why dateline hasn’t done what these two have done in ACORN offices across the country, when they have no problem facilitating stings on sex predators? hmm.)

You know what, if ACORN was remotely honest, and had the merest sliver of honest people working for them, James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles would have been reported to the police, and, more importantly, a warning would have been sent out to all of their affiliates about them.
That the two where able to travel to different offices around the country without any kind of alarm being raised says a lot in and of itself.
Count to 10 on September 17, 2009 at 10:57 AM
O’Keefe and Giles to ACORN: All your base are belong to us.
Check out the Duane Patterson column in the headline threads. As each new ACORN office is exposed, the ACORN reps edit their statements that the sting was attempted and failed at cities A, B, C, etc, to remove the city that was just stung. And then, get this, the NYT and WaPo go with the new, improved BS excuse and don’t ask ACORN why they edited the list! It is SO NICE to have a professional, unbiased major media industry.
jwolf on September 17, 2009 at 10:58 AM
Because Charlie Gibson had no idea it was even a story? haha that was a joke because I think Dateline is NBC and good ol’ Charlie is ABC, and the two have NOTHING in common except… well, their agenda and their world point of view… Besides, they are much more comfortable reporting on how tragic it is that these horrible conservative reporters are going after little ol’ ACORN who is so obviously an “embattled group.”
Entrapment is a law enforcement thing not a media thing and certainly not a private citizen thing, and there are great lengths and rules you have to meet to be able to use the evidence you get through a law enforcement sting operation in court. I don’t know all the legalities, but this case isn’t one of them.
UnderstandingisPower on September 17, 2009 at 10:59 AM
Entrapment is the act of a law enforcement agent inducing a person to commit an offense which would be illegal and the person would otherwise have been unlikely to commit.

Honestly, I think this is a great side benefit to what they are doing. I mean we always knew the MSM was left-biased. But this goes WAY beyond biased into actively rooting for and slanting the news to make it fit your pre-determined agenda. That’s not supposed to be the point of the media.
More and more people because of this story in particular are seeing what the MSM are not telling us AND how they present stories in a way that slants how we see it. The more they do that to people who SAW the original piece, the more they lose credibility. I mean when they talk about these rotten people who were so “scary,” and then you go watch it for yourself… What’s left of their credibility gets blown to smithereens.
I still say this is going to leave a lasting mark not just on ACORN but on the politicians they expose AND on the MSM. I know I won’t ever look at any of them the same way. They no longer have my “benefit of the doubt.”

To a large extent, the publicity and the high public profile of both investigators should give pause to anyone intending them physical harm. Given ACORN’s demonstrated enthusiasm for lawbreaking, they know they would be first on the hot seat were anything to happen to either James or Hannah. They can’t afford that right now. They’ve gone Batsh*t crazy with that word and it’s only been what… 8 months into his FIRST TERM?
This isn’t even an election year and I’ve heard the accusation of racism more in this year than I have for a number of election years.
It’s been a long 8 months. It’s going to be a longer 3 years and 4 months.
And half the country is already quite tired of it.

About Halliburton. They are acused of making profits off government… not bringing sex slavery into our neighborhoods! That line of talk needs shut down now!

I don’t want to see that stuff. The fact that it exists is almost too much for me to comprhend. But you might want to point Glenn Beck or John Stossel in that direction.

Actually, petunia, there should be an “and” in your statement…
ACORN is “accused of making profits off government…
notAND bringing sex slavery into our neighborhoods!”Just thought I’d add that.
