Waters: Protesters should be probed for “racist” thoughts

posted at 5:12 pm on September 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

To be fair, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) suggested that the media probe Obama critics for their latent racism, not the government, but in the end she’s sure it’s there.  The Hill reports that Waters identifies racists by their use of the term “ObamaCare”, which would apparently include me.  Gee, when I called it HillaryCare in 1993, was that racist too?

The media should investigate the racial views of conservative activists like the ones who descended on Washington last weekend, one liberal congresswoman said Wednesday.

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) said that it’s not enough for African-Americans to levy allegations of racism against the right-leaning protesters, and that the media must look into their views.

“I want those people talked to; I want them interviewed,” Waters told the liberal Bill Press Radio show in a podcast. “I want journalists to be all over those rallies and the marches with the birthers and the teabaggers.”

“What I’m looking for is the very people who carry the signs who are referring to the policies in very, very strange ways like ‘Obamacare’ and ‘Barry Obamacare with Kennedy,’” she said. “What I’ve been interested in is hearing from those people that everybody’s referring to — everybody on the Mall, in the rally.”

So let’s get this straight.  Calling Obama’s overhaul of the American health-care system “ObamaCare” is evidence of some kind of bigotry, either latent or overt.  Calling protesters “teabaggers,” on the other hand, is — what, exactly?  Wit?  Sophomoric humor?  A complete ignorance of American history?

Waters needn’t worry about the media.  MS-NBC practically has recast itself as the Thought Police Network, with interminable paranoid segments about latent racism in the opposition to Barack Obama and the Democrats.  Jimmy Carter’s own huge double standard on criticism has gotten plenty of play on all the networks.  The Department of Homeland Security managed to plow the ground for this attack in its execrable report on “right-wing extremism,” which managed to avoid identifying any violent groups but instead painted opponents to abortion and illegal immigration with a broad brush as extremists.

Click on the image below to listen to Waters’ giggly reference to “teabaggers.”  And click here to read more on how the House ethics panel has extended a probe into Waters’ push for a bank bailout that benefited her family.

Mau-mauing? That sounds rather racist from a Brit? So what’s next, will CJ and Sully both appear on Bill Maher’s show, followed by a few doobs and a post show circle jerk?

Inept, corrupt, negligent, supercilious, egomaniacal race baiter.

We pay these people’s salaries, healthcare, expenses, pensions, and God knows what else that goes unreported.

There’s something deeply, sadly wrong with the federal government that no election can fix.

Congress needs an enema, a high colonic. This has GOT to stop being a career for every ignorant, self-serving wretch with a power fetish. They will never vote for term limits, so when, if ever, do Americans take their government back?

When do we become a nation of self-respecting, responsible individuals unbound by these self-aggrandizing fools and the spineless, where’s-my-handout pudding heads that continuously vote them into office?

I fear, despite my most optimistic yearnings, it may be growing too late.

I know children who could govern with more civic pride and purpose, with more humility and personal accountability.

Ed toned down Maxine Water’s actual inflammatory language in the headline by replacing ‘birthers and teabaggers’ with protesters. I’m taking your comment as admission that representatives of your party are so unhinged that even after toning down their language, reporting their words has the potential to incite unrest?

This is the biotch that should be probed for racsist thoughts. It’s obvious they’re in there.

It’s becoming so clear that every democrat that accuses anyone of anything is obviously guilty of that for which they accuse. It’s like they want to hang signs on their azzes and march for recognition.

Uh no. He made “birthers and tea-baggers” appear more mainstream by saying “protesters” and he made “views” seem more intrusive by saying “thoughts”. He was obviously going for the “ZOMG THIS IS LIKE THE GULAG OR SOMETHING!111!” reaction. I don’t necessarily blame him, it’s his job. adamsmith on September 17, 2009 at 7:22 AM

The sad truth, that seems to be present starting with Rev. Wright’s Trinity Church through to Rep. Waters, is that the Black Community seems to have the biggest problem with race. Most of the remainder of the nation has “moved on” but the Black Community, on a per cap basis, has the largest population that keeps racial hatred alive. Worst of all, it seems to be a racial paranoia, rather than being based in any ongoing repression.

Maxine Waters doesn’t want to get beyond the racism of the past. Her constituency is part of the professional victim class who only benefit so long as they are “oppressed” without any chance of succeeding unless they get special treatment and a whole list of government entitlements.

I feel like “racist” is becoming the new “N” word. Where only conservatives should be allowed to call each other racists.

When we greet friends: “Hello my racist.”
When we disagree: “Racist hell.”
When we see a pretty girl: “That racist is hot!”

When non-conservatives call us racist they should be branded as haters spouting hate speech.

By making the word our own we can take the teeth out of it. What do you say my racists?

xardoz on September 17, 2009 at 8:19 AM

I haven’t waded through the previous 4 pages of comments, so someone may have already pointed this out.

If a white person is automatically going to be considered a racists every time they disagree with a non-white, eventually, out of self defense, we will begin to avoid non-whites as much as possible. We will begin to be racists.

As Static says at 8:00 am, the Dems are getting ready to push that button, and if they do it won’t be pretty.

I recall (perhaps incorrectly) reading many years ago that Golda Meir said that Israelis hated the Palestinians not for what the Palestinians were doing to the Israelis, but for what they were making the Israelis become in response.

I DO believe in MLK’s dream. And that is why I am beginning to hate the Dems/Acorn/everyone who cries racist. They are trying to make me into something I loathe, and if they keep it up, I will have to become that to protect myself and my family.

CRR6,

Let’s for the sake of this argument agree that “teabaggers” and “birthers” are not “mainstream” in their political views (I happen to actually agree as to “birthers” and disagree as to the tea party participants).

You seem to be arguing above that it is perfectly o.k. for a democrat congresswoman to call for the investigation of the “veiws” of American citizens who disagree with government policy and attend protests.

You also try to claim that “views” and “thoughts” are 2 different things.

So, I have 2 questions for you:

1) is it appropriate for a congresswoman to call for the investigation of the “views” of people who disagree with her politically? [Part b to this question is if you really believe it is o.k. for the gov't to do this, how is this different than thought police or what the left defines as McCarthyism?]

2) How are a person’s “views” different than a person’s “thoughts”?

If I were Obama, I would be out there pointing out the strides made over the last few decades and urging more of this and why it’s a good thing. Neither of these are doing this even though the progress is undeniable. Wondering if they will see it as ‘racist’ if I were to ask why they are not?

Someone should send Ms Waters a copy of “1984″ by Orwell. Her comments remind me of the “thought police.”

MADgirl91 on September 17, 2009 at 8:59 AM

Deflect .. deflect .. deflect …

The House ethics committee announced that it is investigating Reps. Sam Graves (R-Mo.), Jesse L. Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) and Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), fresh evidence that the chamber’s disciplinary process has been ramped up since the creation last year of an office to vet allegations against lawmakers.

You don’t have to become a racist to fight the demagoguery and race baiting from the left. Nor do you have to help them turn the word “racist” into a joke. That’s not how MLK succeeded, nor how Ghandi succeeded, nor how Christ succeeded. Just keep speaking the truth.

Loxodonta on September 17, 2009 at 8:53 AM

Thank you. I know this intellectually, but sometimes, especially after listening to enough folks telling me I’m a racist, I start feeling that way. The old, “if you call a man a cur long enough, eventually he’ll start acting like one.”

If enough of us can refuse to believe it, maybe we can prevent it.

But damn, we shouldn’t have to deal with this in the first place!

LibraryGryffon on September 17, 2009 at 9:08 AM

Should say, that was a true heartfelt thank you.

This whole mess gets so depressing sometimes. Knowing that others understand how you feel, and who support you out of that hole, is comforting and helpful!

LibraryGryffon on September 17, 2009 at 9:10 AM

Gee, when I called it HillaryCare in 1993, was that racist too?

Nah, that was sexist. Remember when the Democrats ran Bob Packwood out of town because 1993 was “The Year of the Woman” on Capitol Hill, and even being one of the most liberal Republicans in Congress couldn’t save Bob from his own sexism (Ted Kennedy and Chris Dodd notwithstanding)?

Seriously, if Hillary hadn’t made such a big deal about her disdain for “baking cookies” and being treated differently from a man in the 1992 election, the sexism card no doubt would have been thrown all over the place in 1993-94 against HillaryCare opponents.

I remember this approach being taken by leftists in academia as far back as the early 70′s. It’s just that their are more of them and in the MSM and Congress, too. A suggestion for you to consider from a far wiser man than me:

The most fortunate of us, in our journey through life, frequently meet with calamities and misfortunes which may greatly afflict us; and, to fortify our minds against the attacks of these calamities and misfortunes, should be one of the principal studies and endeavours of our lives.

The only method of doing this is to assume a perfect resignation to the Divine will, to consider that whatever does happen, must happen; and that by our uneasiness, we cannot prevent the blow before it does fall, but we may add to its force after it has fallen.

These considerations, and others such as these, may enable us in some measure to surmount the difficulties thrown in our way; to bear up with a tolerable degree of patience under this burthen of life; and to proceed with a pious and unshaken resignation, till we arrive at our journey’s end, when we may deliver up our trust into the hands of him who gave it, and receive such reward as to him shall seem proportioned to our merit.

Such, dear Page, will be the language of the man who considers his situation in this life, and such should be the language of every man who would wish to render that situation as easy as the nature of it will admit. Few things will disturb him at all: nothing will disturb him much.

— Thomas Jefferson (April 13, 1743 – July 4, 1826)
Third president of the United States (1801–1809)
Letter to John Page (July 15, 1763)
The Works of Thomas Jefferson (1905)

Thanks again! Great quote.

Badly worded, but what I meant by “refuse to believe it” was refusing to believe the lies from the other side. If we refuse to agree with them and we do not begin to believe that we are indeed racists, then maybe we can prevent the disaster for race relations that many in power on the other side seem hell bent on fomenting.

Corrupt politicians looking into a corrupt organization that gives them campaign kick backs. Yes, I’m sure that will clean things up.

Did anyone see the Newsweek cover?

Is your baby racist?

I kid you not. A picture of a white baby with the tag, “Is your baby racist?”

Maxine seems to quite familiar with the term “teabagging.” I guess that shouldn’t come as a surprise. After all, Maxine is one of the 50 most beautiful people in DC. So, I’m sure that stunning beauty has led to more than few teabagging experiences in her 70+ years.

It’s all about understanding their tactics and using it against them.

The 11th Rule for Radicals: If you push a negative hard and deep enough it will break through into its counterside.

4th Rule for Radicals: Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules.

Anytime they use the term Racist we will brand them as RACE-BAITERS, RACE-CARDERS, RACE-DISTRACTORS, RACE-BAGGERS ……………. “straight up”.
