Too bad to check: Obama ready to cancel European missile defense shield?
posted at 8:54 pm on September 16, 2009 by Allahpundit
Just a rumor for now, but big enough to warrant a preemptive bloggy uproar in case the die has yet to be cast.
According to reliable sources, Obama administration officials are on their way to Poland and the Czech Republic to deliver very bad news. The administration intends to cancel completely the missile defense sites that had been promised to these governments by the previous administration. This represents a complete capitulation to Russia’s Vladimir Putin, who had demanded that the proposed deployments be halted as a price for improved relations. Ironically, the Obama administration, which is appeasing Russia in the hopes that Moscow will help put pressure on Iran, has made this mammoth concession just a few days after Moscow declared that it had no intention of supporting sanctions against Iran.
The consequences of this action in Eastern Europe, especially in Ukraine and in other countries that feel vulnerable to Russian power, will be disastrous. It is a major American retreat in the face of Russian bullying. And we will get absolutely nothing for it.
This comes five days after Russia reportedly told The One that he could forget about them agreeing to any new sanctions on Iran. Is that what we’re getting in return for kneecapping our eastern European allies — Russia’s agreement to a new round of economic penalties that won’t remotely convince Tehran to give up its nuke program? Or are we not getting even that? How about having Russia change its mind about creating the very same crisis in Venezuela that it’s helped to create in Iran? Do we get that at least? I can stomach, barely, the idea of selling out American allies if we’re getting something of overwhelming value to the United States in return, like Iranian disarmament. What are we getting here, aside from Vladimir Putin’s warm compliments? This is the same deal we made with Chavez on Honduras, i.e. abandoning an ally simply to prove to the cretins of the world that the Obama era will be different from the Bush one.
I hope it’s not true. Just like I hope it’s not true, as Newsweek is claiming, that U.S. intel still seriously believes Iran isn’t working on a bomb. European intelligence agencies have been laughing at that claim for years, from the British back in 2007 to Nicolas Sarkozy just this morning. In fact, as I’ve mentioned a bunch of times on HA previously, the very same NIE that claimed Iran had stopped its bomb program also claimed that it had 10-15 secret nuclear sites devoted to god knows what. The Newsweek piece smells like spin leaked by the administration to buy Obama some more time with the public for Iran negotiations, just like Israel’s threat of having to attack before December unless heavy sanctions are imposed is spin the other way. Exit question: If Iran’s such a serious threat, what’s The One doing taking Europe’s missile defense shield away?

I think Israel-Iran is more likely than Israel-Egypt.
That doesn’t mean the Egyptians won’t try for the non-radioactive parts of Israel afterward.
Osama Obama’s “discussions” with our enemies are working really well, aren’t they?
I don’t think we can wait until 2012. There must be some in the Democrat Congress who don’t hate their country….

Add Russia – Georgia
Add China – Taiwan
Add ROK/Japan – DPRK
Add Colombia – Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Nicaragua
Add All of the above. (there is no stabilizing force on the scene anymore so all these regional tinderboxes can flare up at the same time. Think of it as score settling on a global scale.

If Obama does this it will convince me that he is purposely trying to make America a weak country. Obama is punishing America because he can.
He wants to spend money to cripple our domestic energy supply. He wants to spend money to cripple our health care system. He investigates our intelligence community for doing their job and keeping him safe. And now he’s giving up any chance of a defense America and our allies might have in an early detection and destroy system.
This isn’t even an attack system, it is a defensive system.
Ladies and gentlemen, the President wants America to fail. The President wants America to cease being a super power. The President wants America to be a third world country.
Why?
I have no answer. But I will say this. . . he can.
Tell Michelle Obama that if he does this, for the first time in my life, I will be ashamed of being American.

“Four senior Obama officials, including Under Secretary of State for Arms Control Ellen Tauscher and Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security “Sandy” Vershbow, are apparently in the air right now on their way to Poland. Why? If the Washington hot rumor mill is right, to deliver the news to the Poles and then the Czechs that the administration has decided not to go forward with a missile defense system for Europe and the United States against the budding missile threat from Iran.
It looks like not only have we hit the reset button when it comes to Russia, but now with our friends in Central Europe—except this time, it’s a big fat “no thank you” for your willingness to stick your neck out to protect allies.”

No doubt. I was just throwing it out there. As global stability deteriorates, there are lots of new and regenerated problems that are going to pop up. Egypt has been running a little proxy bit through the PA (I never understood why no one made a big deal about the Karin-A making its way up the Suez) but who knows what might happen as things really start to change.
Heh. I love graveyard humor. But true.
I don’t think we have until 2012, either. And if they pass anything, we’re definitely sunk. I’m still not sure if our monetary system makes it, regardless of whether legislation comes out of Washington or not, or whether the world can hold it together or whether the left pushes the US to race riots and the burning of the cities (which seems like a 35% bet to me). But I just don’t see many dems that I have confidence will do the right thing. They seem to be all-in with the left and The Precedent. I don’t think they have a way out.

We chose to locate these missile defense bases in Europe not because we wanted to give our usually ungrateful allies yet another free ride, but because Iranian ICBMs bound for our eastern seaboard must overfly Europe.
Forward deploying BMD assets there would have given us a much, much earlier opportunity to take a shot. Otherwise we’re waiting to launch Alaskan interceptors at the last freaking minute & having them haul ass across CONUS to hopefully splash a threat missile.
European missile defense was always about protecting OUR largest cities. Protecting allies was gravy.
Obama has just made the United States less safe. Disgusting.

He’s not scrapping the project, just revamping it to fit the new Hopey-Changey world we live in. To wit:
Land based ground to air missile batteries will be replaced with high intensity, less-than-lethal, multi-colored spotlights. The lights – known operationally as ‘Rainbow Warriors’ – will project the Obama campaign logo around incoming missiles making them easier for the flying unicorns (still under development) to spot.
The flying unicorns will be specially trained to whinny a message of peace and love which will persuade the missiles to realize and embrace their inner goodness. This will turn inbound missiles into large marshmallows which will fall harmlessly to the ground and provide food to starving orphans.
The new operation is codenamed Winged Victory.

He’s tired of us being the world’s protectors…and will put our allies under that famous bus because defending them, even with just a missle shield, just costs too much.

I hadn’t known that Zelaya’s UN rep was a bomber from the 80′s. I have to check this out. Micheletti was excellent. I liked the way he explained how Zelaya changed by, “surrounding himself with people from the left” [very rough paraphrase from memory]. There should be some interest among Beck and Hannity about the UN meeting. It’s such a great story. “Terrorist given visa and seat at UN, representing Zelaya’s attempted coup in process, in lieu of the legitimate government’s representative …” Let’s hope.
I hadn’t thought about that. If she did, it would be the first smart thing she’s ever done.
I didn’t know they were friends. Greta should have tried to help her out earlier, as Shrillary’s been making a mockery out of the Sec State position, which is pretty tough, given the many incredible incompetents and morons that have occupied that position. Shrillary ought to run away. She made a huge mistake ever taking the position. There was nothing to be gained. She could have been running a gang in the Senate – real power – but instead she’s trotting around the world, farting at all the dinners. Not intentionally. She just can’t seem to help herself.
Anyway, we’ll see what comes of this. People should see the parallel between Honduras and us.

Anonymous sources indicate that the strategy is to ground base SM-3 closer to prospective European targets and perhaps cancel the more forward GMD/EKV sites and radar. The SM-3 is also exoatmospheric intercept, but with significantly less range than the GMD/EKV, less umbrella per site.
Missile Defense systems are supposed to be layered. With the cancelation of KEI (boost phase intercept and rain debris near the launch site) and perhaps GMD/EKV for Europe, we’re losing layers and will be less safe.
Then again, the easiest way to mail a nuke to the USA would be in the hold of a ship.

Someone mentioned Ukraine earlier.
Indeed, that is what some fear – an invasion by Russia. There are many Russians living in Ukraine, and there have been reports of Russian passports being given to citizens there.
Add that to the fact that Yuschenko and Timoshenko have squandered the “Orange Revolution” from a couple years ago – the gov’t leadership is ineffective, in a constant state of disarray, bickering politicians, etc.
Because of the chaos, it could happen.
Then what? What will the Poles do?
Perhaps NATO should have fast-tracked Ukraine’s membership? Even then, what would NATO do in the event of an invasion?
Everybody would cry to the U.S. to “do something…”
