Too bad to check: Obama ready to cancel European missile defense shield?

posted at 8:54 pm on September 16, 2009 by Allahpundit

Just a rumor for now, but big enough to warrant a preemptive bloggy uproar in case the die has yet to be cast.

According to reliable sources, Obama administration officials are on their way to Poland and the Czech Republic to deliver very bad news. The administration intends to cancel completely the missile defense sites that had been promised to these governments by the previous administration. This represents a complete capitulation to Russia’s Vladimir Putin, who had demanded that the proposed deployments be halted as a price for improved relations. Ironically, the Obama administration, which is appeasing Russia in the hopes that Moscow will help put pressure on Iran, has made this mammoth concession just a few days after Moscow declared that it had no intention of supporting sanctions against Iran.

The consequences of this action in Eastern Europe, especially in Ukraine and in other countries that feel vulnerable to Russian power, will be disastrous. It is a major American retreat in the face of Russian bullying. And we will get absolutely nothing for it.

This comes five days after Russia reportedly told The One that he could forget about them agreeing to any new sanctions on Iran. Is that what we’re getting in return for kneecapping our eastern European allies — Russia’s agreement to a new round of economic penalties that won’t remotely convince Tehran to give up its nuke program? Or are we not getting even that? How about having Russia change its mind about creating the very same crisis in Venezuela that it’s helped to create in Iran? Do we get that at least? I can stomach, barely, the idea of selling out American allies if we’re getting something of overwhelming value to the United States in return, like Iranian disarmament. What are we getting here, aside from Vladimir Putin’s warm compliments? This is the same deal we made with Chavez on Honduras, i.e. abandoning an ally simply to prove to the cretins of the world that the Obama era will be different from the Bush one.

I hope it’s not true. Just like I hope it’s not true, as Newsweek is claiming, that U.S. intel still seriously believes Iran isn’t working on a bomb. European intelligence agencies have been laughing at that claim for years, from the British back in 2007 to Nicolas Sarkozy just this morning. In fact, as I’ve mentioned a bunch of times on HA previously, the very same NIE that claimed Iran had stopped its bomb program also claimed that it had 10-15 secret nuclear sites devoted to god knows what. The Newsweek piece smells like spin leaked by the administration to buy Obama some more time with the public for Iran negotiations, just like Israel’s threat of having to attack before December unless heavy sanctions are imposed is spin the other way. Exit question: If Iran’s such a serious threat, what’s The One doing taking Europe’s missile defense shield away?

Absolutely Jimmy Carter 2.0. I didn’t know we would have TWO incompetent pussies as President in my lifetime.

Flashback:

Iran, 1978 and 1979. I was an engineer at one of the largest defense contractors in the country. We made lethal fighter jets that are still being used today to defend Europe. I was there when NATO made their first procurement of our planes. Lots of ex military men worked in our advanced design department and lots of them had inside contacts with people who we can’t talk about but who are in the know regarding what is going on in dangerous places in the world.

Continue flashback: Iran, 1978 and 1979. While our esteemed “wee wee’d up” President Carter 1.0 was hiding under his desk sucking his thumb mumbling something about “diplomatic immumity and sovereign status of our embassy grounds in Tehran”, thousands of Islamic militants were sacking our embassy and taking our people hostage for the beginning of 444 days. At the same time, on the first day of the seige, the Islamic militants tried to sack the USSR embassy in Tehran.

The USSR head dude (I think they called them Premiers back then), called the Iranian Allatoyah and told that Allatollah to call his dogs off or Iran would be bombed into glass, period. Funny thing, the attackers withdrew from the USSR embassy area and focused all their attention on humiliated the United States by sacking that embassy.

Now we have Jimmy Carter 2.0. This guy is giving away the store all over the world without getting anything back in return. We have to ask WHY???!!!!

This is where I am beginning to think this birth certificate deal has legs. EVERYONE PLEASE READ THIS LINK!!!!!!

In this very well researched and footnoted report on Obama’s early years from birth until he ran for public office, a very good case is laid out on there just might possibly be original Kenyan birth certificates and that the Russians have one of the original certificates. Could this be how they got this missile defense system killed? Are they holding our President hostage to his secret background?

Read this for yourself. Get informed. I am open to the possibility that all of this is true. However, I am not sure President JOE BIDEN is any better. We HAVE TO get both houses of Congress back in 2010. We need to save our country’s future and the future of any freedom in this world.

Got an email from a good friend in Latvia this morning.

She was OUTRAGED over this. Among all the expletives in her email, she said Obama has made “a colossal mistake with tremendously bad consequences”. I agree wholeheartedly.

We can basically bid democracy in Ukraine, the Baltics and Georgia goodbye. It’s just a matter of time.

Putin wins.

If this is refocused around an Iranian missile threat, it’s clearly better for Israel.

Accepting, for the sake of argument, that Obama is not a closet Muslim, the question remains: what would he be doing differently if he were? And don’t tell me calling off the predator attacks because if he did that would be a little too obvious.

If he were, he wouldn’t be refocusing around the threat from a Muslim nation (Iran). This is good news for Israel.

In 1983 Obama wrote a piece against stationing Pershing cruise missiles in Europe in Columbia SDS* magazine Sundial, titled Breaking the War Mentality. His arguments closely following Soviet propaganda at the time – we know that anti-war movement was fueled by Soviet propaganda from archives opened after the fall of the Soviet Union.

* About SDS. Weather Underground (Bill Ayers etc.) came out of the SDS (Students for a Democratic Society). The Sundial Magazine logo is identical to the Weather Underground logo and is also echoed in Obama’s logo.

Okonkolo,

What has Obama done since taking over as Commander in Chief that give you any inkling that Obama gives a rip about Israel? What makes you think this missile defense shield cancellation has anything to do with protection Israel?

karenhasfreedom on September 17, 2009 at 2:19 PM

The system being canceled was never targeted at Russia and would only work against a limited strike using first and second generation warheads.

Eastern European allies are not betrayed by this. They are protected by membership in NATO and the nuclear deterrence of three nuclear member nations.

The alternative is more flexible, can be deployed six years faster, and will work more effectively against the more immediate threats.

lexhamfox on September 17, 2009 at 2:19 PM

Right in time for the anouncement that Iran is indeed capable of making and delivering a nuke.

When I wake up in the morning, I am going to have such a laugh about all of this.

What a ridiculous nightmare- a fascist in the White House;a president intentionally ruining the economy and defense so as to cut the nation down to size to make the rest of the world happy;a corrupt syndicate called Acorn standing to get billions so they can continue their criminal enterprise.
Etc., etc., etc.

Hahaha! Ridiculous! Must be something I ate.

lexhamfox on September 17, 2009 at 2:19 PM

LOL. As if anyone trusts NATO to do squat. “Nuclear deterrence”? You’re a funny guy. The US, under the Washington junta and the America-hating, West-hating Precedent, wouldn’t lift a finger to help anyone to the right of Fidel Castro. The French are … the French. And the British are being overrun by muslimj considerations more than anything else. And all “allies” of the US know that this nation is now even less dependable than the French.

If someone had written this story 3 years ago, they would have been laughed out of any respectable editor’s office. The US went insane on Nov 4th and signed our national suicide note – along with signing the same for all American allies.

Other than not rolling over on expanding settlements (in the long run the right decision), I haven’t seen anything of significance where Obama doesn’t support Israel. This cancelation came about, as Secretary Gates put it, “because of a change in the U.S. perception of the threat posed by Iran. U.S. intelligence decided short- and medium-range missiles from Iran now pose a greater near-term threat than the intercontinental ballistic missiles the Bush plan addressed.” Gates (Bush’s Secretary), and the Pentagon are behind this. This move was done because of a perceived threat, not because of Israel, but because the new proposed defense system is putting Iranian missiles as a priority, it is good for Israel, and clearly so.

Karenhasfreedom, I’m still having trouble finding that. I read the first part and then it said to see the second part buy it from Amazon. But the site itself had a “Part Two” which I then looked over. It was all since the inauguration (gosh, hard to believe all the crap that has happened since then. Whew!)

My thought is that the Russians have something on him because they have his passport records from when he was detained in Russia as a senator – before his passport file here in America was probably altered.

I’d really like to know when in 2004 the Kenyan people took the birth records from 1960-63, and especially where that came in relation to Obama’s election to the Senate – which would have been illegal if he was not even a US citizen (which would be the case if he was born in Kenya and never naturalized).

This whole thing is surreal. I keep thinking I’m going to wake up and find it’s all been a nightmare. Especially after 9-11-01, the thought of this nation torn to bits from within in such a short amount of time would have seemed laughable. I don’t think anybody’s laughing now.

Before the election, when we were sounding the alarms, I told my dad America would never elect somebody as anti-American as Obama. I kept hoping that maybe I was just being alarmist in my understanding of who Obama is. But as each new atrocity has happened I’ve gotten more of the sinking feeling that we were right all along and that the python may already be too tight around America’s neck for us to ever escape.

As the questions kept coming up, “What did Obama gain by doing this?” I had the sinking feeling this morning, that Obama can never tell us what he gained – because it would be an admission that Russia has this whole nation hostage because he has been lying to us all along about his eligibility.

Nancy Pelosi knows it; that’s why she signed two different documents and only used the one saying Obama is constitutionally eligible to send to Hawaii, where verification of Constitutional eligibility is supposedly required by state law. It’s also required by state law in New Jersey and wherever Wrotnowski is from. Which form did she send to New Jersey?

The site you linked to – I hadn’t realized that the lawyer who did the Dunham-Soetoro divorce later became the lawyer for the DNC in Hawaii. Makes me wonder if Nancy sent that form to Hawaii because she knew that guy could cover for her – make sure the facts of the birth were never made public.

Someday there will be some answers. I don’t know if I’ll still care about this in Heaven, but there is one Judge that Obama will never be able to bribe or worm his way around – and I really want to know what the truth is about all this.

justincase on September 17, 2009 at 3:17 PM

By the way, the Obama admin made the announcement on the anniversary of the Soviet Invasion of Poland in 39:

MAYBE some jam tomorrow, but none today. That is the American message to its most stalwart allies in the ex-communist world as Barack Obama’s administration shelves plans to deploy ten interceptor rockets in Poland and a radar station in the Czech Republic.

The timing of the announcement is poor, coming on September 17th, the anniversary of the Soviet attack on Poland in 1939. In a country highly tuned to symbolic snubs, it matters that nobody in Washington seemed to know or care about that.

rob verdi on September 17, 2009 at 4:03 PM

Wow. Iranian missiles was *always* a pretext to locating US troops in Eastern Europe as a counter to Russian ambitions. Putin has has ambitions to return Russia to it’s former ‘glory’, such as it was. Hellooo, Georgia?

How many ethnic Russians live in the former satellites and now need to be protected by mutha Russia? Those satellites are full of folks who vividly remember the tender mercies of their former overloads and would very much like to avoid any repeat performances. Who correctly see the US as instrumental to their recently attained freedom from the bear.

Hope and change, I guess there’s enough change for everyone now.
By pulling back we signal that we are surrendering eastern Europe to Russia’s presumptive sphere of influence; it has nothing to do with the relative technical merits of the proposed system any more the SDI did under Reagan. It was/is geopolitical theater and either the current administration really did go by the merits and is staffed by fools, some other backroom negotiations were made, or maybe we have the wrong premises for evaluating the actions of the Obama foreign policy; if we assume the wrong goals, the policies look downright stupid. All fun aside, O is not stupid; he beat the Clintons at their own game, no mean feat. Hubris? Maybe. Manchurian? Well maybe a little far….

Maybe we really don’t understand the ultimate policy goals of the Obama administration, which certainly would be a big deviation form the last 50 odd years and does not appear to follow the stated intent. Sleep well.

Isn’t a ground based missile defense system more secure than a mobile version on water? Wasn’t the USS Cole a “floating duck” when it came to terrorist attacks? How can Obama’s cheaper and more mobile version be more secure?

Where’s Hillary? It’s 3:00AM, and Poland has been invaded…

lovingmyUSA on September 16, 2009 at 9:58 PM

She tried calling the PM of Poland…and he refused her call. He said Obama should have called. Not the first time Obama broke protocol and assigned someone to do what he should do. Just yesterday he snubbed PM Harper of Canada by not personally greeting him upon arrival.

Polish PM wouldn’t take U.S. calls

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed today that he declined last night to take a call from the U.S. informing him of the decision to scrap planned missile-defense bases in his country.

Two U.S.-based sources close to the Polish government said Thursday that Tusk also rejected a call from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton — on the grounds that, as the head of the government, he should speak to the president.

“Hillary called — and the reason he turned it down was because of protocol,” said a source.

Poland abandoned by The One and all on the 70th anniv. of the Soviet invasion of Poland during WWII no less. Just a coincidence I’m sure.

Damnit, Obama is seriously making me sick to my stomach. I can’t take much more of this. The nation can’t take much more of this and indeed the world can’t take much more of this.

Something bad is going to happen and it’ll be like the USS Cole all over again in that all we do is essentially launch an investigation, fire a few missiles and call it even.

Yakko77 on September 17, 2009 at 6:15 PM

Hillary needs to desert this sinking ship. I hope she does resign and goes and runs for NY governor. I am by no means a Hillary fan, but if she wants a future in politics, she needs to quickly distance herself from this tool. I never understood why she allowed him to take her out of being relevant in the first place. He has put czars in positions that traditional were in areas of the Sec of State jurisdiction. She needs to resign soon or she will be tainted forever.

The Czech government withdrew, at least temporarily (and possibly for good), its proposal to ratify an agreement on the base.
Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek halted the ratification process when it appeared that the Chamber of Deputies was likely to vote to reject the agreement.

Two thirds of Czechs have consistently opposed the radar ever since it was first proposed in 2006.

Anti-radar activists have repeatedly called for a referendum on the issue, but have been rebuffed.

Czechs opposed to U.S. plans to install even had a protest march’s during President Barack Obama’s visit to Prague despite a ban on the demonstration.
The protests came as opinion polls suggest many Czechs fear the missile shield could lead to tensions with Russia and more insecurity in Europe.

In addition to ongoing protests, some demonstrations recently ended a 10-month hunger strike.

A new approach, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the United States would deploy Aegis-equipped ships with interceptors capable of shooting down ballistic missiles to defend both European allies and U.S. forces
