Rasmussen: ObamaCare more unpopular than ever
posted at 12:16 pm on September 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
And on the seventh day since Barack Obama gave The Word to a joint session Congress, the voters have seen ObamaCare and pronounced it … not good. Rasmussen now reports that opposition to ObamaCare has hit its highest level yet at 55%, with its low equaling its August nadir:
One week after President Obama’s speech to Congress, opposition to his health care reform plan has reached a new high of 55%. The latest Rasmussen Reports daily tracking poll shows that just 42% now support the plan, matching the low first reached in August.
A week ago, 44% supported the proposal and 53% were opposed. Following the speech last Wednesday night intended to relaunch the health care initiative, support for the president’s effort bounced as high as 51% (see day-by-day numbers). But the new numbers suggest that support for health care reform is now about the same as it was in August.
Why have voters so firmly rejected the new appeal from Obama and the Democrats? For one thing, it’s not terribly new. Obama has not offered any new arguments for months on health-care reform. In fact, his White House press office announced that Obama would have his own plan launched before the speech, which has yet to materialize.
Democrats have offered a new argument, though, one that has been firmly rejected:
While some Democrats have charged that opposition to the president’s plan is based upon racism, just 12% of voters agree.
If anyone wonders why the ObamaCare proposals have run into so much firm opposition, one only needs to look to this argument. Democrats can’t understand why Americans don’t want government in charge of the most personal decisions in our lives, and therefore assume we’re all just a bunch of racists. This argument fails to explain why the same idea was just as unpopular 16 years ago when the Clintons tried forcing it on the US. More to the point, it insults the very people Democrats hope to convince.
However, it is nice to see that Jimmy Carter is now identified clearly as a fringe lunatic. Nice.

Murtha won reelection after calling his voters racists. But on the evidence, his district is very unusual in putting up with that kind of crap. Most people don’t like being called nasty names that aren’t even true — which makes me wonder why on Earth the Democrats keep trying the same failed race baiting technique every time they get into a jam?

The dems are confusing the facts that people generally like Obama, or are afraid to state they don’t like him, and the other fact that they abhor his policies, his actions.
He thinks his high personal approval ratings translate into people agreeing with his policies.
A major mistake, and one that has and will continue to cost him.
Unless he comes down off the “mountain”, and actually listen to the people. And begin to understand, they like him, but hate the government…they don’t trust the government, and they now don’t trust him.
But no worry, come election time, they will have an “awakening”, and it will be too late, and not soon enough for us.

Only Democrats see race as an exploitable circumstance for a benefit to themselves. Only liberals ‘see’ the race industry as moral, only liberals see the truth as racism, only liberals see others as racial prey animals, only liberals are so despicable that liberty is denied to to others in order benefit their politics, their wallets and also because they are glad to call themselves enlightened and elitist while they oppress the very people they profess to help.
And to cover up their low morals and predatory principles only liberals project their criminally slavish dishonesty on the only party who would actually empower all Americans, equally, just as MLK knew from the beginning.

His problem is he hasn’t really spent enough time talking about his plan and really get out there to sell it to Americans. He should also stop working so hard for the American people and get out of the White House….maybe hold a townhall or two. This would allow people to see him outside of washington and show that he cares.

The Race Card is the most rapid-fire all purpose ad hominem vapid weapon of smear, mass deception and diversion ever conceived by man. It is a weapon under which weak minds are servilely crouched and can be fired with the greatest of ease by even the most intellectually and morally challenged, and in fact, was designed especially for use by them. It is void of justice. It is void of liberty. It has no rationality. It has little rhyme. It has no expiration date. It doesn’t even appear to have a half life. There are those who theorize that it may continue to exist indefinitely in some form even after time itself has come to an end.

I have no doubt that the WH is pushing the “racist” charge and coordinating that debate into the media in light of Obama’s plummeting popularity and failure in being a true leader on healthcare reform.
They’ve doubled down on it since the staggering turnout in DC last Saturday. Too bad for them, the rage is being ignited further and people are way beyond becoming intimidated by this tactic. Get in their face and call it out for what it is at every turn.
RepubChica on September 16, 2009 at 12:37 PM
We knew the Dems and the media(I know, I’m being redundant) would play the race card, but I never expected it to happen less than 8 months into his Presidency. It’s a sign of desperation and it’s a disastrous political strategy.
If the intent was to intimidate the tea party protesters and anti-Obamacare crowd into silence, it will have the opposite effect. If the intent was to divert attention from the Obamacare debate, that may work for a few news cycles, but it won’t increase the popularity of the health care bills under consideration. If the intent was to anger the handful of actual racists out there who oppose Obama to the point where they did something stupid, well the jury’s still out on that one, but I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were the drive-bys or the DNC.
It’s been an interesting month and a half. We’ve watched Obama and the Dems set up the mother of all comebacks for fiscal conservatism in this country with intrusive, un-Constitutional legislation and insults hurled at anyone who opposes them. We’ve watched the formerly mainstream media drive the final nail in their coffin by refusing to cover major stories like the Van Jones hiring and firing, the tea party movement, and the ACORN scandal, all while spending segment after segment accusing half the country of racism. And most importantly, we’ve seen a no longer silent majority rise up and give the metaphorical finger to the establishment and begin to take our country back(and no, that has nothing do with Obama being half-black).
Doughboy on September 16, 2009 at 12:37 PM

Just wait until these low-life libs have the government paying for your health care (even if you are paying premiums) and then THEY get to decide everything that affects your health, how you eat, how you exercise, what you do, … The same way the federal government decided that they have the right to regulate corporate pay (because the federal government decided to buy into the corporations) that will happen in everyone’s life when the government is running health care. It will be hell. Pure hell. Forget smoking bans and trans-fats. WIth the government running health care, they will decide everything about your life.

What I don’t get is how the left can argue that opposition to his policies are racist while denying that he has made race relations worse. They can’t have it both ways, can they? Growing opposition = growing racism, right?

Catherine the Great created a ‘Pale of Settlement’ in Russia in 1791. This was a western border region of the country in which Jews were allowed to live. The motivation behind this was to restrict trade between Jews and native Russians. Some Jews were allowed to live, as a concession, beyond the pale.
Pales were enforced in various other European countries for similar political reasons, notably in Ireland (the Pale of Dublin) and France (the Pale of Calais, which was formed as early as 1360).
The phrase itself comes later than that. The first printed reference comes from 1657 in John Harington’s lyric poem The History of Polindor and Flostella.
In that work, the character Ortheris withdraws with his beloved to a country lodge for ‘quiet, calm and ease’, but later venture further – ‘Both Dove-like roved forth beyond the pale to planted Myrtle-walk’. Such recklessness rarely meets with a good end in 17th century verse and before long they are attacked by armed men with ‘many a dire killing thrust’. The message is clearly, ‘if there is a pale, you should stay inside it’, which conveys exactly the meaning of the phrase as it is used today.

Jimmy Carter should be ashamed of playing the “race” card especially when he grew up in the South where “racism” did dominate the culture.

They’ve overplayed the race thing. Being accused of racism at every little point of dissent quickly makes the term meaningless as an accusation. Especially in this case. Think about it, for Obamacare opposition to be racist, it would suggest that the only reason to thwart government takeover of 20% of the economy is because you don’t like the filthy liar in the White House.
The debate over healthcare has not, nor has it ever been, about the filthy liar in the White House. It takes more than a little ego to think that this legislation is all about him and not about the details of the legislation. But hey, the bastard won.
