NYC terror plot: FBI fears Madrid-style attack on subways, planning more raids

posted at 7:23 pm on September 16, 2009 by Allahpundit

I was thinking today that this story is an object lesson in how utterly useless the color-coded terror warning system is. Major plot, Al Qaeda cell, hundreds of FBI agents scrambling, no arrests made or bomb materials yet found, and more raids on the way. If this isn’t a code red, nothing is.

Note well: So convinced were the feds that these guys are dangerous that they had their hostage team in the city, ready for action in case the raids turned ugly.

The FBI’s elite Hostage Rescue Team arrived in New York in anticipation of the offensive to thwart a Denver-based terror cell with ties to Al Qaeda, police sources told the Daily News.

Another source said an earlier raid uncovered nine backpacks and cell phones, raising memories of the March 2004 bombings in Madrid…

Najibullah Zazi, the Colorado man who triggered a rash of Queens raids Monday, was identified through e-mail, wire taps and a confidential informant as part of the plot, the source said…

Zazi was stopped at the George Washington Bridge on his way into the city, sources told The News. Authorities later seized his rental car from a Queens street, sources said.

In the car, sources said the feds found documents and papers about bomb-making and bombs.

The Daily News claims the cell is comprised of five men but I don’t know how that squares with the detail about nine backpacks. In fact, if you believe ABC News, it was actually 14 backpacks that were found. Remember: It only took four to kill 52 people in the London bombings of 2005. Exit question: Do they really not have enough to arrest Zazi? E-mails and wiretaps and an informant and bomb-making instructions and a cross-country drive to NYC: Seems like there’s a conspiracy and an overt act in there somewhere. Maybe they let him go in hopes that he’ll do something stupid like contacting other members of the cell, against whom the evidence might momentarily be weak. If you want to see him wearing a sh*t-eating grin and denying everything, follow the ABC link and watch the embedded video.

Stop hunting our own CIA and stop releasing inflammatory photos for no reason and stop defunding the military and stop running around the world saying how evil the US is and we might take your side seriously. But the left has no interest in protecting this nation and the Patriot Act was used as a cudgel to demonize the US by the Traitor-in-Chief, so don’t try and hide behind it, now.

You morons are mirandizing foreign detainees, going after people defending our nation and you’re trying to make it sound as if you take US national security seriously. Give it a break.

progressoverpeace on September 16, 2009 at 8:20 PM

Yep. I believe that light should be shined on powerful, secret orgabiztions who have the right to kill and whose actions shape perception of our nation and effect everything from global strategic consideratiosn to how a cabbie treats me in Athens.

I don’t believe that the military needs hundreds of billions of dollars in toys when they’re designed to fight a war that never happened and whose times have passed. We have enough jets too fragile to fly to last a long, long time.

And I do believe that we, as the United States of America, have to answer to a higher standard, that we have to live uop to our laws and Constitution and the treaties we’ve signed. If you want to be the kind of country Putin’s Russia has become,go for it. I’d actually like to be free, and if I have to take a miniscule extra portion of uncertainty to be free, that’s the risk Americans have always taken. This is both a mis-characterization of the policy and an interesting point. If you have a war where it’s very hard to tell your adversaries form more or less neutral civilians, and it’s essentially a war that never ends, don;t you have some obligaton to try to find out which ones are actually terorists rather acceptiong the sentancing of innocent people to life in prison? It’s not like Bush didn’t let some people go after investigation and it’s not like Obama has opened the prison gates.

There needs to be a process and, in this kind of war, perceptions are more important than ever. In Germany, every kid joined the Wehrmacht. In Afghanistan, or Indonesia, or Detroit, it’s a one-on-one battle that turns on whether some hormone-addled 19-year-old thinks we’re evil enough to blow himslef up over. If we don’t do demonstrably evil things — like lock up innocent people for the rest of their lives — it’s easier to win that fight.

I’m all crammed in on the uptown F looking around for suspicious looking Muskies with beads of sweat on their foreheads, clenched fists, inappropriate layers of clothing etc. You betcha I racially profile. I cannot control my survival instinct even if I wanted to. Liberals who say they don’t do are are just bare faced liars. Hell I’m betting that Muslims do it too (the ones who don’t want to die quite just yet anyway).

Sometimes I think I’m going crazy with my thoughts on the subway. If I stand holding the overhead pole, I worry that my arm will be blown off in the event of a blast. So I try to keep my limbs as close to my side as possible. I think I’d only feel 100% safe if I was stood behind Michael Moore.

Every subway ride, I wonder what it would be like and I imagine the flash and the bang and the smell and the turmoil. I’ve had these thoughts ever since the London bombings. Rest assured, if it happens and I survive it, I’m getting some Mohammed bombturban shirts made which I’m going to wear prominently every day. I’m also going to get thousands of bombturban stickers printed which I’ll be sticking on every freaking surface I pass in the city until I decide I’ve made my point.

Clinton allowed this nation to be attacked time and time again without doing anything in response. That was pathetic and we all said so. The only time he could find the guts to fight was on the wrong side in a war that we had no business being in, since it was Europe’s problem. But I supported the mission, anyway – even though the planning was retarded.

Bush came into office and jacked up the military from the start. He immediately concentrated on missile defense, which was misdirected though necessary and it showed that Bush was serious about national security from the start. Then 9/11 happened and we changed our whole defense stance to take reality into account (which had been illegal before 9/11, thanks to moron libs).

Now, your America-hating Precedent is trying to take everything back to 9/10. And worse, he’s on the offensive against those who defend us. The idiot wanted to hold show trials for the whole Bush administration, for pouring water over the faces of poor terrorists (who you people always cry for … Americans, not so much). You people have been on the attack against America since you got in. Don’t hide from it. We all know about it and you know that it’s just your nature. Your traitorous Precedent has slapped every American ally in the face while he cozies up to every marxist, lunatic dictator around. He hates America and has made it plain. And he is busy taking our defenses apart.

Tell me, bleeds, how much information do you expect to get out of a detainee who now gets fifth amendment rights (that he does not have – you do understand that, right?)? Those coffee and donut sessions are going to be so effective …

You guys have made it clear that protecting our nation is not on your list of priorities. Quite the opposite. We’re all tired of your pathetic lies.

Now, run along and support the slimebag Zelaya’s attempted coup. That’s another great position of the treasonous left and your retarded Precedent …

Something may be off or maybe not. BUT keep this in mind the JTTF normally works quietly. There are reports the NYPD blew the investigation when they (the NYPD) was given a picture of the guy they were following and they showed it to an Imam and he recognized the guy and told his family the FBI was looking for him. The guy fled.

Whether this was a mistake or deliberate to smoke this guy out who knows? I do remember there were JTTF raids in Chicago a few months ago where they arrested people and took chemicals away etc etc. We still don’t know what went down in Chicago. That is the way they normally operate up until the point when they decide to publicize it.

The one thing that made the hair on my neck stand was that the first thing they did after Sunday’s raids was inform the Congressional leadership (such as it is). That is something that I’d never heard happen before.

So is something off now? maybe. Was it a blown operation or deliberate who knows? Is this a reflection of Obama’s policies beginning to wear down the JTTF’s capabilities? Maybe. Was it Obama’s incompetence? who knows? Is this serious? Definitely.

Hey Bleeds, you had better run over to the top thread and explain how The Precedent screwing Europe over on missile defense is a sign that the left is worried about our security. Maybe you’ll convince someone there …

You have no idea what you’re talking about. None. The US has fought many wars without mirandizing any foreigner on foreign soil. You people are just stark, raving loons.

progressoverpeace on September 16, 2009 at 9:03 PM

Because they were known combatants captured on a clear field of battle in a war with a finite conclusion. This is, as they say, a different kind of war. And the use of the phrase “mirandizing” shows how poorly you understand things, because no one is giving them a talk before they’re interrogated, or claiming that they have constiturional rights on foreign soil. You still get weeks and weeks to beat the truth out of them, you just can’t hold them forever and ever, after it starts to look like you might have the wrong guy. Why, it’s something akin to justice!

Heh.

I’m 5′1 and weigh about 100 lbs. And you’re scared of me.

I don’t know what it is yet. Only to note that the approach is definitely different.

Weight of Glory on September 16, 2009 at 9:00 PM
Yes, it is different. With the media douchebags at the helm to prop up the Traitor-in-chief, in an attempt to make it appear that he’s doing his job.

atheling on September 16, 2009 at 9:03 PM

Actually, the Bush administration was a PR powerhouse when it came to terrorist-related activites, even when they had to grossly exaggerate the conspiracies of the people involeved to get headlines, or use bring us back up to coed red to get a political opponent off the front page.

The Obama Administration has been very hands off. Not that this has not become front page news yet, which it would surely be if the President felt like trooting out an FBI Director or Attorney General to make it so.

Arthur Koestler’s entire book “Dialogue With Death” , and later “Darkness At Noon“, was the result of just such a concentration.

He was expecting a firing squad.

It miraculously never came.

He, thereafter, helped change our history with the communists thanks to that fateful reprieve.

An acute-minded, staunchly pro-liberty thinker whose polemical defenses of the West are still very vital, especially “Bricks To Babel“.

During Bush’s terms they would never report on the details like they are now partly because they didn’t want the public to know how the President is protecting the nation.

I think it’s being leaked to make Obama look like he’s doing the same.

atheling on September 16, 2009 at 8:53 PM

I thought the same thing. Obama is probably publicizing this to make him look like a hero to improve his sagging public opinion poll numbers.

Colorado Anne on September 16, 2009 at 11:21 PM

Very interesting. Today on KOA (am radio station in Denver) they ran a public service type commercial saying if you see suspicious activity around public water sources, etc. please make sure you contact the authorities. I thought it was odd, don’t ever remember hearing a “commercial” like this ran on the radio before.

Mojave Mark on September 17, 2009 at 12:10 AM

What’s with these Libtards around here? On one hand they bash the Bush administration for treating terrorists badly/unfairly, and in the same breath praise Ozero for smacking down terrorists and trying to kill Bin Laden?

I grew up in the ’60s and ’70s hearing their same BS about Vietnam. Hanoi wouldn’t have been our enemies if we (well, JFK and Johnson actually) hadn’t made them our enemies. But, boy, if anyone dared try to attack America you’d better believe they’d be on the beach with a rifle defending Home and Hearth! Oh yeah!

Truth is, these DU creeps were telling Moscow, Peking, Pyongyang, Hanoi and the rest of their Commie pals, “Hey, don’t worry…we have things under control over here…won’t even have to fire a shot, Comrades!”

Any enemy of the United States is automatically their pals. See them for what they are.

Dr. ZhivBlago on September 17, 2009 at 12:19 AM

Looks like this was the real deal, you don’t call in the HRT if it wasn’t serious. Those FISA warrant really did yield something. There only links to AQ is probably from via training manuals found inside. Especially because the article said this: “In the car, sources said the feds found documents and papers about bomb-making and bombs.” Definitely published by AQ.

Zazi will definitely be used to coax the other cell members into contacting him (or other way around). Just arresting him is no use if the rest of the cell is active.

Cr4sh Dummy on September 17, 2009 at 1:32 AM

This whole story must be bogus, as I recall Michael Moore shouting “There is no terrorist threat!”

Seriously though, I’m disturbed at how much media coverage this will get if a major attack is prevented, simply because the credit will go to Obama… while dozens of thwarted attacks were downplayed or outright ignored under Bush. The media would just love to have some “good news” to bump The One’s tanking ratings.
