LA Times: ACORN “needs to clean house”

posted at 2:55 pm on September 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Virtually alone among the nation’s dailies, the Los Angeles Times has actually reported on the explosive videos taken by undercover journalists James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles for the website BigGovernment, which have thus far resulted in defunding by the Senate and New York City, with promises of more action to come.  Today, they become the first major daily to have the editors address the scandal on their editorial page.  And while they’d like to be sympathetic to the notion that the videos just represent a few bad apples, the LA Times’ editorial board simply isn’t buying it:

Unfortunately for ACORN, this isn’t the first time the liberal advocacy group has been in the news. It became a liability for then-Sen. Barack Obama during the presidential campaign after almost a third of the 1.3 million new voters it registered were rejected, in some cases because they were fraudulent. During one of the debates, Sen. John McCain questioned Obama’s past relationship with the group, which Obama had represented as a lawyer in a 1995 lawsuit.

Given all the scrutiny, one would have expected ACORN to be doing everything in its power to make sure its activities were squeaky clean. Yet since the initial video was released last week showing ACORN workers in Baltimore who appeared to be aiding and abetting criminal activity, activist filmmaker James O’Keefe has released two more showing similar behavior at ACORN offices in Washington and Brooklyn. The response from ACORN? Fire the workers involved and blame Fox News.

“We are the boogeyman for the right-wing and its echo chambers,” reads a self-serving statement released Saturday by ACORN’s chief organizer, Bertha Lewis. She claimed the videos were “doctored” and threatened legal action against Fox. What she didn’t do is apologize for the appalling and possibly illegal behavior of ACORN employees, acknowledge that the organization has serious internal problems and vow to correct them, or do what she should have done as soon as the scandal was revealed: resign.

The LAT’s editors left out Lewis’ claim that the videos were the equivalent of the “Willie Horton” ads, which Lewis claims later in her “self-serving statement.”  One has to believe that the editorial writer couldn’t bear to repeat it even in criticism out of embarrassment for a group they’d like to see survive, which means that the editorial misses the entire racism defense ACORN and its allies have tried to use since the videos began appearing last Thursday.  Other than that, this editorial entirely repudiates ACORN and demands some big changes — and tacitly approves of the defunding efforts in play on Capitol Hill.

This appears to be the day that the story has crossed over into the mainstream media for good.  The New York Times reported on it today, albeit while missing the story’s local angle, which speaks volumes about the paper.  The political action in the Beltway has forced the media to pay attention, and the lurid spectacle of having a woman admit to murder (apparently falsely) has created an entertaining moment so compelling that it would require a concerted effort to continue to ignore it.

When will the broadcast networks start reporting this on the evening news?  Tonight?  Tomorrow?  Never?  We may be seeing even more of these videos soon, so don’t expect the pressure to end.

Morning Joe on MSNBC did show a piece on ACORN in the last quarter of an hour this morning, and then actually briefly discussed it. No one seeemed to be defending ACORN.

My point is, this needs to be revisited while the scandal is hot.

Force Obama to throw them under the bus.

artist on September 16, 2009 at 3:27 PM

Yes. And the only way to force Obama to curse ACORN is to threaten to remove Obama from the presidency. But my point remains that it is OBAMA that needs to take the fall, having begat ACORN, having already employed ACORN reps within lobbyist and government jobs. ACORN people are already IN the government and IN the DNC. But more to the point, so long as Obama is not punished and removed from power, there are millions of people waiting to take ACORN’s place in the government structure Obama runs, by whatever name they rename their grassroots.

maverick muse on September 16, 2009 at 3:37 PM

It just came to me. The people caught in the ACORN videos would be the same kind of people running “The Public Option”. I heard earlier today that Hannity’s show tonight is supposed to have more ACORN stuff on it.

ACORN…..WATERGATE?

d1carter on September 16, 2009 at 3:25 PM

Unfortunately, our mainstream media will never let this story develope into a full blown watergate style investigation. #1) There’s no Repubican in the WH. #2) Most of the media is complicit in allowing this group to flourish. But, the longer Obama remains silent on this issue, the more he also will appear to condone the actions of Acorn.

Your next statement should have been, “so if you’re not planing on reporting on this scandal, can I assume that NBC condones these actions?” (the “hang-up” would have been on their end)

Rovin on September 16, 2009 at 3:53 PM

Gotta watch out for ACORN doing some “house-cleaning” that amounts to nothing more than teaching its scum how to be more careful. We need external investigations by Attorneys General and Inspectors General, and Obama better show his support. His silence suggests complacency.

MADgirl91 on September 16, 2009 at 3:54 PM

ninjapirate on September 16, 2009 at 3:20 PM

As opposed to reporting anything Axelrod says?
So you are saying that right wing news has to be taken with caution, but left wing does not…you are just being silly…Notice how easy it was for the LAT to refer back to the past when ACORN was found to have a third of their votes a fraud, and how easy it is to see the 30 convictions, and the other 15 or so lawsuits and civil charges? It takes about 5 minutes of searching to confirm that this story is exactly what it is…ACORN is an illegal enterprise, and has been for years, supporting illegal activities. Even there two founders were charged with embezzling over 1 million dollars…pretty easy to find that stuff out…even our president considers them a reputable, and valuable asset to his “team”…you are so silly today, did you take your silly pills?

right2bright on September 16, 2009 at 3:56 PM

One guy that deserves a nod his way is John Fund. He’s been screaming about these guys for a long time and could just never get his peers in the MSM to run with it. He wrote a pretty good book that centers around ACORN’s tactics in corrupting the election process.

I’m sure he’s very pleased with the efforts of these kids, though I haven’t seen him on any shows this week.

angryed on September 16, 2009 at 4:30 PM

I had this on another video thread this morning. Little help anyone?

Ok, for the first time here I am asking for help from the Hot Air community.
I am ashamed to admit the Governor of my great Commonwealth of Virginia, Tim Kaine, is only working part-time at his elected job. He is also the chairman of the Democratic National Committee. I just e-mailed him the letter below. I have also attached the link to contact him. If anyone has a few minutes today to raise some ethics issues with him, it would be appreciated. This man has national office aspirations in his blood.

Dear Governor Kaine:

In late 2007, it became apparent to me that ACORN and it’s affiliates are a criminal organization, and are being funded with taxpayer monies. My understanding is that the DNC worked hand in hand with ACORN with regard to voter registration and other “community organizing” activities.

In light of the recent videos released by Breitbart news service, it has been confirmed that ACORN offices across the country show a lack of common morality at best, and at worst, true criminal behavior such as conspiracy to commit mortgage fraud and conspiracy to commit tax fraud.

My question to you Governor, is has the DNC severed it’s ties to ACORN and if not, why not?
If the realtionship is to continue, can you please provide reasons why the national Democrats condone a relationship with an obviously corrupt entity?

As a Virginian and taxpayer, inaction on your part only leads me to believe that you, in your position as DNC chairman and the Governor of Virginia, agree with their policies and practices.

Governor, you should be ashamed to have anything to do with these corrupt organizations. A failure by you to call for an investigation of ACORN activities in Virginia would lead me to the opinion that you care little about the needs and problems of Virginians and are more interested in furthering a partisan agenda and your own political career.

I eagerly await your response.

Sincerely,

xxxxxxxxxxx

It never occurred to me that the famous Horton ad had anything to do with race until after the left pushed back. Horton, a dangerous criminal, was released early by a soft on crime governor Dukokas who was running for president. Very soon after release Horton murdered someone. The ad was about Dukokas not the race of the criminal. I agree with Lewis that the ACORN videos are the equivalent of the Horton ads; they are both innocent of being improper.
