Jon Stewart to media on ACORN: “Where the hell were you?”

posted at 1:36 pm on September 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Kudos to Jon Stewart, who doesn’t sugar-coat the embarrassment at all — to the apparent delight of his audience, who get kudos of their own. How can the national news media ignore the many allegations of corruption at ACORN, which gets millions of dollars in federal funding, and allow a couple of independents with $3,000 and a bad wardrobe scoop them on the undercover story of the year? It’s easy when newsrooms are more concerned with political direction than truth. Stick around to the end, when Stewart zings Michelle Malkin haters:

O’Keefe and Giles are the new Woodward and Bernstein.

No, O’Keefe and Giles are the ethical investigators that Woodward and Bernstein could have been, had they not decided that it would be cool to destroy a President, and instead investigated actual corruption.

The old MSM term belongs to Fox News now…

The idoits at ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, et al are now known as the “Elite Media”… They do not rate being referred to as Main Stream any more…

Haven’t really been main stream ever, if you ask me…

Khun Joe on September 16, 2009 at 3:48 PM

So, the fake news gets it, even if the formerly-real news doesn’t.

rogersnowden on September 16, 2009 at 3:54 PM

Stewart does this every few months or so: Redeems himself with a funny, relevant, non-leftoid bit.

When he’s good, he is GOOD; usually he’s not……

Janos Hunyadi on September 16, 2009 at 3:55 PM

Best Stewart EVAH!

Maybe he will see the light soon.

TheSitRep on September 16, 2009 at 3:56 PM

ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN…hand in your pencils and tablets, you’re no longer needed.

Jeff from WI on September 16, 2009 at 3:58 PM

Yeah Yeah. Stewart did his obligatory segment on how bad lefties are. Now he has to do a month of only “Fox News is teh evil” stories as penance.

Speedwagon82 on September 16, 2009 at 3:32 PM

Though he’ll do so while inviting on conservative guests like Kristol, Huck, Bolton, Gingrich and he’ll give them a fair shake during the interview. Sometimes the conversations are more interesting than what passes for political discussion on Sunday morning.

dedalus on September 16, 2009 at 3:59 PM

Obama is still wondering what the problem is. Working your underage hookers in the black community is simply good business there.

Hey now, we are apathetic and narcisstic but definetely not undereducated : )
nyx on September 16, 2009

LOL! Please, you just proved Badger40 correct!

There’s an old Axiom that goes “The more you learn, the less you know”

Perhaps you think in terms of “enlightenment” the discovery of the world and your true inner self. … The more you think you know, the less you have learned”

In other words it takes a whole lota learning to realize you’re an idiot.

On the plus side, once you realize you’re an idiot, you will truly be Enlighten!

DSchoen on September 16, 2009 at 4:07 PM

You would think that the left wing morons of the MSM would at least have the minimal amount of intelligence to cover the story. Could they possibly be thinking that it wouldn’t be covered if they didn’t report on it? They just managed to drive a few million more people to FOX. Good news for FOX…bad news for the State-run media.

JEM on September 16, 2009 at 4:14 PM

Where were the reporters on this story Jon? You got an idea?

ronsfi on September 16, 2009 at 4:42 PM

Good on ya, Stewart! I appreciate the notion that even liberals see a line (or several) that shouldn’t be crossed and see that ACORN has crossed it.

BTW, I suggest that everyone cease using the term “mainstream media”. Let’s call them the Ancien Regime – ripe for a revolution.

MochaLite on September 16, 2009 at 4:42 PM

Can Stewart explain why we even need ACORN?Is the government saying Blacks and Hispanics are too stupid to apply for a home loan, register to vote, or apply for assistance by themselves?

Jeff from WI on September 16, 2009 at 4:46 PM

Gotta give credit where it’s due–that was a great piece.

Niere on September 16, 2009 at 4:47 PM

Don’t really care for Stewart, but this was funny.

jimmy2shoes on September 16, 2009 at 4:53 PM

Let’s give credit where credit is due – a TWENTY YEAR OLD STUDENT gets an idea, pursues it, and scoops the entire nation of so-called professional media!!!

The Baltimore adventure with ACORN started off as a silly idea, both absurd and incredible by all accounts. But it stuck, and quickly escalated into a full blown operation with scripts, method acting, undercover gear, scandalous outfits, fast minds, good hearts, plenty of humor and healthy homemade blueberry muffins.

When I pitched the “prostitute goes into ACORN seeking housing” idea to James O’Keefe at the beginning of the summer, I had absolutely no idea how he would respond. He came back with, “Would you be willing to portray the prostitute? And if so, when can you do this?”
Needless to say, the project had officially begun.

An idea conceived on an afternoon jog would soon birth material evidence.

in answer to why there is so little conservative political humor along the lines of what stewart did in this clip, i could identify probably seven or eight notes he struck in this clip that would get him removed from the air with an apology from the network if he were a conservative.

rogersnowden on September 16, 2009 at 3:54 PM

Well, this particular piece of investigative journalism was really a hit-or-miss thing. The people who did it admitted they dreamed it up randomly and had no prior indication that ACORN was helping prostitutes, let alone human traffickers.

The larger problem, of course, is that no journalists conducted an actual investigation into any of ACORN’s activities–not their voting stuff, not their mortgage stuff, NOTHING. They just assumed any criticism of ACORN was Republican smearing and paranoia. Dozens of indictments and attorneys’ general investigations later, and still nobody covers ACORN.

Now, finally, after four (4) separate ACORN offices are caught willing to aid and abet the most preposterous looking “pimp and prostitute” duo I’ve ever seen, do people finally take notice of ACORN. But how does the MSM react? By again portraying it as “gotcha” fake journalism!

Outrageous.

I love Red Eye. But it airs at 3:00 am and has a budget about 1/5th of Jon Stewart’s. Fox News won’t air it during the 11pm or 12am hours on weeknights (which is sad). By contrast, the Daily Show is Comedy Central’s #1 show and pulls very respectable ratings at 11:00 pm.

Stewart’s target is usually TV journalism. He’s especially tough when it crosses the line from news to entertainment. Cramer tries to straddle that line.

CNBC needed to be called out for their lousy journalism, and failure to inform their investor audience. There are people on the network more at fault than Cramer, but he’s the one that showed up. Unfortunately for Cramer he didn’t come prepared.

Norvell on September 16, 2009 at 5:52 PM

the daily show is a formal comedy show with comedic performers delivering formal jokes written by comedy writers.

red eye – and this comparison is not meant to knock either show – is the blog-o-sphere’s premier rhetorical innovation, “snark”, presented on television.

i laugh more often at red eye, but then i’m usually laughing with them.

i have a harder time laughing at the daily show because the joke is more often than not intended to mock my “side”. when a joke is rooted in a fact-claim i know to be false, the more effective the joke is as a formal joke, the more offensive it is.

and depressing. the biggest lie comedy people tell is that funniness equals truth somehow. the fact is that timing, alliteration, the building of anticipation and ironic juxtaposition all play more into stimulating a laugh more than content.

i was reading something a while ago of someone who noticed that stewart’s shtick consists of reciting a headline referring to some event, person or circumstance he and his audience are pre-determined to mock, and then making a stupid face to cue his like-minded audience that it is then time to laugh.

not to slag him right under this piece. at least he gave the acorn scandal more coverage than most of the liberal media out there.

eh on September 16, 2009 at 6:11 PM

If Stewart would simply expand his market by going after the WAY RICH target environment of Obama and Pelosi more than he currently does, he’d beat Beck in the ratings and BOR.

But, he knows he can’t being a statist that he is.

Sapwolf on September 16, 2009 at 6:25 PM

So does Stewart.
Esthier on September 16, 2009 at 5:55 PM

Stewart probably sees himself clearly on the “entertainment” side of the line. He doesn’t do anything journalistic, though he does bring his political opinions into his interviews.

The stakes for CNBC viewers is higher and the network too often allows corporate leaders to use their airwaves for propaganda. Cramer (along with Kudlow) is probably the least guilty of failing the audience on CNBC.

What Stewart fails to see, because of his self-imposed blindness, is that the very ideology he so adamantly defends, i.e., “minorities are victims and must not be held to the same standards as everyone else,” is the very foundation that supports groups like Acorn, SEIU, and the Democratic Party.

Actually, Hannah Giles, (the 20 yr old fake prostitute) said she had been following the story of how ACORN was getting away with its criminal corruption/voter fraud etc. & trying to think of what could be done to bring them down. Then one day while she was out running, the idea for this undercover video came to her.
.
And James O’Keefe, the 25 yr old “pimp” videographer had already made a name for himself with a similar “sting”. He exposed Planned Parenthood’s willingness to provide an abortion for an undercover woman posing as a pregnant, abortion-seeking 14 yr old who was having a relationship with a man in his 30’s. PP even went so far as to assure her they wouldn’t report him to the authorities (for child rape) as they are legally obliged to.
.
While they may not have known about ACORN’s willingness to help with underage prostitution, you are wrong to say they “admitted they dreamed it up randomly”.
.
Aren’t there are enough people trying to discredit these 2 brave young people? Let’s not perpetuate unfounded rumors to aid their detractors.
