Jon Stewart to media on ACORN: “Where the hell were you?”

posted at 1:36 pm on September 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Kudos to Jon Stewart, who doesn’t sugar-coat the embarrassment at all — to the apparent delight of his audience, who get kudos of their own. How can the national news media ignore the many allegations of corruption at ACORN, which gets millions of dollars in federal funding, and allow a couple of independents with $3,000 and a bad wardrobe scoop them on the undercover story of the year? It’s easy when newsrooms are more concerned with political direction than truth. Stick around to the end, when Stewart zings Michelle Malkin haters:

Kudos to Stewart. I wonder what he’ll say today about the video released yesterday.

cubachi on September 16, 2009 at 2:09 PM

As I recall Stewart was very recently, a matter of days ago mocking Glenn Beck who gets some credit for you know putting the whole ACORN thing out there. Perhaps if he pointed that out maybe then he would break through the shell of some his viewers but I doubt he ever would acknowledge Beck’s work in bringing this to the public eye.

Maybe Stewart will do a followup piece, asking why Nancy Pelosi is blocking the House vote to defund ACORN.

RushBaby on September 16, 2009 at 2:13 PM

Zero kudos to Stewart. He just didn’t want to be seen sitting there as a MSM member intentionally ignoring the joke.

Hell, the hack can’t even riff off Scooby-Doo properly, unlike, say, every three-year-old on the entire planet.

It’s going to be great to watch him as this continues to unfold; will Charlie find he has to cover noise?

And how will be play it? Using the standard media “smear” meme? Or will he go all out and use a bizzaro world Dan Rather-esque, “Real but inaccurate”? I kind of hope he leaps before he looks and does the latter, ’cause later as the multitude of investigations bear fruit and people are prosecuted, he’ll look not only like the partisan he is, but an idiot.

I bet he wishes now that he had retired last week.

This is interesting, but I have a question.

Yesterday on both the Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity radio shows people from Breitbart said that there would be another video today and more after that.

There was no comment on Beck’s radio show today (that I heard). And Biggovernment.com hasn’t even posted the second half of yesterday’s video.

Does anyone know what is going on?

His audience is usually in rip-roaring laughter. This was more of a nervous giggle compared to the usual fare. They’re leftists who are uncomfortable with him ripping a leftist group.

I also noticed a lack of enthusiasm from his audience.

More 18-29 year old watch the Daily Show than most news channels.

They do this bcs they are apathetic, undereducated narcissists.
Course, I’m thinking when I was that age I was the same way.
Parents really need to do a better job raising their kids bcs this is what we end up with-kids thinking that Jon Stewart is news.

Badger40 on September 16, 2009 at 1:51 PM

Maybe I just run with a smarter band of 18-29 year olds — maybe I just did a better job of raising my kid — but I tend to find them intelligent, involved and well-educated. Course, I hang with the elitists and we tend to encourage this sort of thing, and if you know my son’s political views you’d quibble with the “better job” bit. But, to the point, not a single one of them confuses the Daily Show with real news. Not one. They think he’s funny, they love his ability to capture hypocrisy and to skewer the media and its herd mentality and they like that he general wages war against the right (but are pissed off at the D’s enough that they enjoy the shots he takes at them).

But they know that he’s not really news.

Which puts them far ahead of people who take Glenn Beck seriously.

One of the groups in DC I stopped and talked with/listened to was interesting…. two people with blue hair. One was a “geezer lady” from Florida with “blue-white” hair, the other was a kid (15-17 or so) with a spike-mohawk hairdo that was colored blue (like you see at the mall…). They were expressing common complaints… concern about socialism and government spending. The kid was upset because he had no say in the matter but was going to have to pay for it…. sorta like my favorite signe… No Taxation Without Lubrication

When my husband switched the channel to The Daily Show last night – I crabbed at him and proceeded to talk over the intro. Stewart used to be a nightly watch for us during the Bush years and even though he was harsh, I thought he would be equally harsh on Obama and the Dems when the seas changed over. The kiss-ass fest was intolerable. Not only did he not hold Obama’s feet to the fire, he threw himself prone and invited Obama to walk all over him. Sickening. And then this piece played.

Is Stewart back? Or is that just wishful thinking?

Well Jon, like you they’ve probably been spending a little too much time gluing their lips to Obama’s ass since last year. You know, those people Stewart demonizes like Limbaugh and Beck have been talking about ACORN since last year and before.

You know the line now will probably be “ACORN is so totally like, uncool…but Obama’s dreammmmmy!” ACORN is Obama, morons.

Good Lord, Ed, you are the most gracious and forgiving blogger in the short history of blogging. Yeah, Stewart did what he did, but to suggest that his audience was on board is almost laughable. I didn’t know there even was an audience until the third segment. “Stunned silence” anyone?

And Stewart’s conclusion that the press just isn’t working hard enough? To quote him, are you effing kidding me? The press has actively covered for these cretins from day one. They aren’t investigating the story? They aren’t even covering the effing expose!

Jaibones on September 16, 2009 at 2:52 PM

Watching Jon Stewart beat the “gatekeepers” to this story reminds of that SNL skit in which fake Barry was asked questions such as “Would you like another pillow?”, while the faux Hillary got grilled. The MSM was pulled kicking and screaming -albeit for about 2 seconds- into asking Team Barry some tough questions. My guess is that they’ll do the same with this.

G. on September 16, 2009 at 3:06 PM

That was funny and I am amazed JS seems to actually be offended. He also called the SRM on it as well. That small amount of respect I had for him once has returned.

Did you notice how the trained seals in his audience were silent until he indicated it was OK to laugh? Very telling.

When Sarah Palin was mocking Barry during her convention speech she wondered aloud just what exactly does a community organizer do?

Now America has the answer. That is why the state run media has to avoid this at all costs. Barry’s favorite employer is a corrupt criminal organization. Add that to his twenty years with batsh!t crazy Rev Wright and what do you get?

A far left radical a$$clown.

DeweyWins on September 16, 2009 at 3:07 PM

The problem is, the people who watch “The Daily Show” don’t know its “not news” more so, the guy who is its face loves to play coy about exactly what it is.

From those I know who do watch this show and are Leftists they take Jon stewart pretty seriously. Though I do recall a time a very long ago when the show was clearly meant to be a farce but a different host was its “anchor”. Since then they added more “news” trappings to blur the line.

It may shock you to learn that 50% of all 18-29 year olds are of below average intelligence. Given the well known location of the center of ye olde standard distribution, the ability to distinguish political satire from hard news is indeed a rare and precious skill.

Truly, even your ability to properly compose a sentence speaks well of your intellect in our barely literate world. However, if we’re to precise in our criticism of you progressives, it’s not your intelligence we must question (though that happens too).

It’s the astonishing lack of wisdom exhibited by your judgments.

You’ve never given up the idea that if you could just be given control of people you could make them better. It’s that utterly vapid pollyanna utopianism propped up secular humanist pseudo-intellectual circle jerkery that will now and forever doom progressives and their ideological kin to the hopelessly corrupt, totalitarian bureaucracies that are their only answer to life’s problems.

You’ve never understood people, never will, and the ruinous squalor that follows your movement everywhere is the inevitable result.

You mean the man who actually pursued this story and the Van Jones story, the man who’s actually driving real news these days, even without a network news audience and the general respect of his peers?

Beck may be a clown, and I understand the temptation to ignore him. I’m not a viewer myself. But this kind of condescension is inappropriate given what he’s achieved lately.

And to speak up for people my age, yes, most of us get that Stewart isn’t the news. We’re not all stupid and apathetic (and I do resent that some here throw that out so freely). Also, Stewart viewers are generally more intelligent on average.

However, while many realize he isn’t the news, many use him as their main news source, particularly for the reasons you mentioned, and that is a problem, especially for those who believe Stewart isn’t biased or at least keeps objectivity when “reporting” or doing interviews.
