Jon Stewart to media on ACORN: “Where the hell were you?”
posted at 1:36 pm on September 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Kudos to Jon Stewart, who doesn’t sugar-coat the embarrassment at all — to the apparent delight of his audience, who get kudos of their own. How can the national news media ignore the many allegations of corruption at ACORN, which gets millions of dollars in federal funding, and allow a couple of independents with $3,000 and a bad wardrobe scoop them on the undercover story of the year? It’s easy when newsrooms are more concerned with political direction than truth. Stick around to the end, when Stewart zings Michelle Malkin haters:
Blowback

He may be a leftist who pushes whatever meme the MSNBC crowd is pushing, but he does get it right sometimes.

The funny thing is, more people will probably watch this than the nightly broadcast news.

Even a blind squirrel finds an ACORN every now and then.

I am no fan of this guy, but THAT was funny.
XWing5 on September 16, 2009 at 1:40 PM
This is all fine and good but hear he still treated the 9/12 Marchers like they were scum so not watching.
Can’t believe people get their “news” from this clown and are proud of it.
Sharr on September 16, 2009 at 1:40 PM
Not so much. His audience is usually in rip-roaring laughter. This was more of a nervous giggle compared to the usual fare. They’re leftists who are uncomfortable with him ripping a leftist group.
amerpundit on September 16, 2009 at 1:41 PM
True. So this may our best chance of it gettng through to the younger set.

….And when Jon Stewart completes the circle, and wonders, on-air, what Acorn’s connections to Emir 0-Bama of Amerikastan are about….then and only then will Stewart deserve any applause, at all.

I always thought Stewart was racist.
joeindc44 on September 16, 2009 at 1:45 PM
He couldn’t do this very often. His audience is responding to laugh cues from Jon…they’d stop laughing after a while if he kept it up.
And he’s a putz, anyway. I’ll give him credit when he stops coddling enemies of Israel on his show.
Asher on September 16, 2009 at 1:45 PM
John Stewart is racist.

Of course, Jon conveniently left out the part about how legions of Democrats contribute handsomely to, and win elections through, ACORN.
anXdem on September 16, 2009 at 1:45 PM
Obviously, making up the top-tier decision-makers of American media are johns who enjoy the services of underage Latin American prostitutes.
Ergo, they are highly supportive of ACORN efforts to establish more brothels specializing in this kind of hooker and are not about to do anything that jeopardizes them.
And the reason they are supportive is they understand that mmore such whorehouses will result in downward price pressure. The closet-capitalists of the MSM are as eager for a bargain as we conservatives (that’s bargain in the general sense, not bargain in terms of hooker pricing — although I personally appreciate a hooker bargain as much as the next Democrat, be he an attorney general or otherwise).
FlameWarrior on September 16, 2009 at 1:46 PM
There goes the 18-29 year-old contingent. Barry and the alphabets will be upset Stewart let this story out of the bag.

anXdem on September 16, 2009 at 1:46 PM
Sometimes John Stewart surprises me. Not very often, but sometimes. No wonder a bunch of liberals claim to get their news from him. If I refused to watch FOX news, Stewart sadly remains the only viable alternative on TV.

Now the “Journalists” can’t say they haven’t seen the story.
jpmn on September 16, 2009 at 1:48 PM
Do not underestimate Stewart’s power over the 18-29 year old contigent. Despite being a liberal, the more he covers it, the more democratic identification among 18-29 year old would fall. More 18-29 year old watch the Daily Show than most news channels.
nyx on September 16, 2009 at 1:49 PM
I can’t stand John Stew-ed-hard; BUT I loved this!!!
Fox IS lovin’ this! But that’s not the point . . .ACORN is a criminal enterprise and needs to be shut down and the leaders inprisoned!

Don’t worry, he’ll make up for it tonight with a peanist joke or three.
Orange Doorhinge on September 16, 2009 at 1:49 PM
My problem is, why is Stewart expressing surprise that the MSM didn’t catch this? Does he really not understand that the MSM won’t touch stories that reflect badly on the Dems until they have no choice? Does he not realise that if the NYT got wind of this story, and no-one else had it, they’d bury it?
Now if he’d made the link between Acorn and Obama, that would’ve been kudos.
EnglishMike on September 16, 2009 at 1:49 PM

They do this bcs they are apathetic, undereducated narcissists.
Course, I’m thinking when I was that age I was the same way.
Parents really need to do a better job raising their kids bcs this is what we end up with-kids thinking that Jon Stewart is news.
Badger40 on September 16, 2009 at 1:51 PM
That audience was laughing out of obligation, not deriving actual humor from his jokes. Mindless Obama drones, refusing to listen to the eeeeevil racist lies.
MadisonConservative on September 16, 2009 at 1:51 PM
Props to Stewart for getting the word out.
John the Libertarian on September 16, 2009 at 1:51 PM
State Run Media (SRM) will not survive. Stewart is simply reading the tea leaves…it is inevitable.
d1carter on September 16, 2009 at 1:52 PM
John Stewart better watch it. He’s outraged about a government funded organization telling people how to set up a brothel with underaged sex slaves. The left isn’t going to forgive that very easily.
Buford on September 16, 2009 at 1:52 PM
He earned this one. He’s more trusted on the left than the MSM.

I quit watching Stewert after Obama arrived on the scene and stole his heart but I will credit him this much: he occasionally rises above his biases and hits the truth. This is one such occasion.
So kudos to him … for this. Now back to our regularly scheduled Obamagasm.
MaxMBJ on September 16, 2009 at 1:54 PM
Wow, not one snarky remark about blaming it on the Bush administration.
Congrats Stewart.
CarolynM on September 16, 2009 at 1:54 PM
Stewart is not expressing surprise. It is faux outrage. The whole point of the show is to show that the mainstream media is corrupt. Of course Stewart is a liberal and shows news/outrage from a liberal perspective which is why it is somewhat surprising that he covered ACORN.
nyx on September 16, 2009 at 1:54 PM
This will get the word out faster than FNC.
mankai on September 16, 2009 at 1:56 PM
This story is so over the top delicious the rest of the media is too embarrassed they have been upstaged. He hit all the key points in this scandal, framed exquisitely. The fact that the show gave the story 6 plus minutes is astounding. Perhaps, the tide is turning, one can hope.
tessa on September 16, 2009 at 1:56 PM
Whatever it takes to get the word out…whomever it takes.
And this got the word out…with a great sarcastic ending.

Not a Stewart fan, but I extend kudos to him on this piece.
ICBM on September 16, 2009 at 1:57 PM
look at all it took to get this though. Had they just visisted one or two offices, this story and chances of it making any outlet such as Stewart would be nill.
Its the fact they are dangling this out there, and promising many more that has them scrambling.
jp on September 16, 2009 at 1:58 PM
Ironically, now that he has outed it, the alphabets will probably have to cover it.
Vashta.Nerada on September 16, 2009 at 1:58 PM
He know’s it. When he started the segment he spoke of the crazy conservatives talking about Acorn and voter registration fraud. He knows the link is there. I don’t think he wants to look any deeper though. Stewart wants to think this problem is isolated to Acorn and not it’s associations. That’s typical of the left even when Obama has been quoted saying, “I’m very careful with whom I associate with.”
shick on September 16, 2009 at 1:58 PM
When the late night comedy guys get on something, it’s bad news for whoever they get on.

True…and they believe that Jon Stewart is the top journalist out there.
Well, kudos to Jon once again for not being a total partisan hack…like Olbermann (has bathtub boy said anything about ACORN lately?)…and for calling out his own liberal side when deserved.
JetBoy on September 16, 2009 at 1:59 PM
But Michelle Obama’s arms are so much more interesting than these ACORN stories.
Daggett on September 16, 2009 at 1:59 PM
Oh, please. Stewart walked into a crowded room with everyone already laughing, so he starts laughing too and turns to repeat the joke to newcomers. Wow, the man’s a comedic giant.

There comes a point where even a barely-cognizant Democrat stooge can no longer stomach the blatant hypocrisy of the Democrats & the Nutroots.

Like the old Persian/Arab ? proverb “Better to choose the stronger horse for your journey” Well Jon, appears you believe the MSM is the weaker horse, and I concur.

Note to John Stewart:
Those voter fraud allegations did pan out to convictions or guilty pleas in 15 states.
muggedbyreality on September 16, 2009 at 2:01 PM
Yeah. I don’t trust his core audience to have the attention span necessary to, in retrospect, understand his lead in as sarcasm.

“I’m a fake journalist”=Clown nose ON. Pretending he’s not part of the MSM he’s criticizing in this bit is the real comedy.
Christien on September 16, 2009 at 2:03 PM
I fear that the MSM will just gloss over this now, they still won’t take it seriously due to those EVIL conservative activists….
cmsinaz on September 16, 2009 at 2:04 PM
Great point. I noticed that too. They also are familiar with the Acorn link to Obama. That’s why they nervously giggled.
Never the less, I think this left a mark on his audience and his viewers.
It’s an awfully big and painful horse-pill to swallow.
shick on September 16, 2009 at 2:04 PM
Eh, even a broke clock is right twice a day. He did put a lot of emotion into it thought. He’s a better actor than I had previously thought.

Elizabetty on September 16, 2009 at 2:06 PM
I still hold out hope that Jon Stewart will figure it out. He’s smart, and doesn’t like being fed BS. At some point, he may realize that every liberal policy he defends ends up being proven wrong once it’s implemented in the real world.
hawksruleva on September 16, 2009 at 2:06 PM

I can’t stand Stewart myself (smirking, smarmy, self-rightous a–hole that he is), but I will give him props for getting this out to the Yoots, and probably inadvertantly acting out what was going on in newsrooms around the country (face-palms while watching the videos) before said newsrooms decided to sit on the story. And also asking the SRM the question we’ve all been asking ever since the campaign – WHERE WERE YOU???
Of course, given how he is partially responsible for the complete LACK of vetting of Obama WHERE WERE YOU, JOHN STEWART???
crazy_legs on September 16, 2009 at 2:07 PM
Jon Stewart? I don’t care. A jello pudding pop is more entertaining and satisfying.
Fletch54 on September 16, 2009 at 2:07 PM
If he’s now mocking the “merry band” and the minions -community organizations and MSM- he could be just as “elemental” in their demise. He’s making it okay to mock Barry with Barry’s most important voter demographic.
Doesn’t mean he’s not a “snotty leftard load”; just means he could be a useful snotty leftard load.
