ACORN: Hey, maybe we do need to clean house
posted at 4:07 pm on September 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
After BigGovernment began publishing undercover videos of ACORN offices offering advice on tax evasion and child prostitution, the community organizing group reacted as one might imagine: denials, accusations of falsification, and threats of lawsuits. Their national spokesperson, Bertha Lewis, claimed that the “right wing” had made ACORN the “Willie Horton of 2009,” claiming victimization by racists. Today, however, Lewis and ACORN are singing quite a different — and more humble — tune:
ACORN, calling the actions of some of its employees “indefensible,” has suspended advising new clients as part of its service programs and is setting up an independent review to see what happened.
ACORN chief executive Bertha Lewis said in a written statement that she was “ordering a halt to any new intakes into ACORN’s service programs until completion of an independent review.” …
Lewis continued: “We have all been deeply disturbed by what weve seen in some of these videos. I must say, on behalf of ACORN’s Board and our Advisory Council, that we will go to whatever lengths necessary to reestablish the public trust. For nearly forty years, ACORN has given voice to communities, and gotten results. Right now, our nearly 500,000 member are working their hearts out for quality, affordable healthcare for every American and to help stop the foreclosure crisis. We must get this process right, so the good work can go forward.”
Humble is what follows after humiliation, in most cases, and that’s exactly what ACORN has suffered for the past week. Humble would have gone a long way toward moderating the public backlash against ACORN in the wake of these (now) “indefensible” actions by ACORN offices in Baltimore, New York City, Washington DC, and San Bernardino. Had they acknowledged the obvious from the very beginning, the rest of these exposés would have become anti-climactic.
Instead, Lewis played the race card, and now has egg on her face and that of the entire organization. ACORN definitely needs to clean house, and they should start with Lewis. She has become the Baghdad Bob of ACORN and has zero credibility after accusing everyone of being racists for their offense at taxpayer dollars going to an organization that offers advice on how to cheat the IRS.

Keep the pressure on & ignore the accusations of racism until ACORN is utterly dismembered. When the name “ACORN” becomes synonymous with “Obama” and “corruption” (even among elected Democrats), we can think about easing up.

These videos only give evidence to what we knew all along. During the campaign any critisism of ACORN instantly put you in the racist column. Recall the efforts to get voter ID anywhere it’s tried was met with derision as voter intimidation and a hardship to minorities. Let’s not let the vindication we have turn into smug rightiousness, these videos are what we will use to discount the lie that the “irregularities” in voter registration are minimal. There tactics are ingrained into the methods of this temporarily disorganized community.

After watching these videos, I understand how the investigations into the sub-prime mortgage mess revealed landscapers, cleaning women and “performance artists” mysteriously making $300-400,000 dollars a year to qualify for homes (they were probably promised to sell a year later for double the profit).
Will Breitbart/Beck connect the ACORN sources with the politicians to finally nail these suckers? After all, I assume these applications have left a paper trail to someone.

I’m a stay at home mom with some time on my hands now that school has started. I would happily volunteer to help the government start their investigation of the corruption called ACORN. And, I don’t care who gets exposed – Republican, Democrat, Independent, white, black, purple or blue. It is time to get some people to begin investigating all this who only care about the TRUTH!

Re Bertha Lewis’s “Willie Horton” reference:
I am guessing that she means the following. The malicious Willie Horton ads were (as leftwingers claim) the “reason” GHW Bush beat Dukakis in ’88, thereby costing Dukakis the presidency he should have had. In the same way, these malicious attacks on ACORN may cost Obama.
If that is what she means, I only hope she’s right.
Ironically, most of ACORN’s current clients would have no idea who Willie Horton was.

bridgetown on September 16, 2009 at 5:05 PM
You want to really dig deep into this Acorn thing?
Let’s start looking at mortgage loans where ACORN provided assistance.
I have dealt with A LOT of foreclosure properties. The common theme in “Acorn Neighborhoods” is this:
Buyer bought the home and NEVER MADE ONE PAYMENT. Zero Down…no payments. Free place to live for approximately 18 months by the time the banks got the Sheriff to move their crap out.
I am willing to bet a large sum of money that ACORN assisted these folks. Provided them with all of the guidance to fleece the system. I want an audit…now….of ACORN’s involvement with non-performing loans.
Our whole economic meltdown over the last few years can be placed right at the feet of Freddie, Fannie, and Acorn. They provided the looseness to defraud….and then advised how to defraud.
And here is the kicker….Acorn was going to receive $8.5 Billion to buy up these homes at 5 cents on the dollar and then “give” them to fraudsters. Remember the person saying that “Obama is going to take care of our housing and gas” just after he was elected??? Well here you go.
Thanks to Beck and the pimp n ho for stopping this massive fraud scheme.

From Jake Tapper at ABC….
Who is on Acorn`s Independent Advisory Council?
The Council includes many prominent Democrats, including the man who helped President Obama Transition Team, John Podesta, President and CEO of the Center for American Progress; former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend; Andrew Stern, International President of the Service Employees International Union; and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry Cisneros.
(How many are going to resign?)
———–
ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis said. “…Right now, our nearly 500,000 member are working their hearts out for quality, affordable healthcare for every American and to help stop the foreclosure crisis.”
Hunh? ACORN is pushing ObamaCare? How? Why are taxpayers paying for a program to promote the agenda of one political party? Did Bush hire 500,000 people to push his programs at the street level?
albill on September 16, 2009 at 5:19 PM
Go to a flat tax and abolish the IRS. Use the suddenly unemployed 1 million accountants and IRS workers to audit all these ‘community organizations’. That should take a couple of billion man hours. Use the rest of the Porkulus money to hire legions of prosecutors and to build infrastructure (prisons) for all the newly convicted crooks.
What a nice dream.
