A brief thought about Jimmy Carter

posted at 10:00 am on September 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

If Jimmy Carter believes that the “overwhelming” portion of criticism towards Barack Obama is due to racism, does he also believe that the overwhelming portion of criticism towards Israel is anti-Semitic?  Wouldn’t that apply to a man who hangs out with people who target Israeli citizens for terrorist attacks?  After all, Hamas regularly issues anti-Semitic harangues and smears, and yet Carter has no problem cozying up to them and claiming that their criticism of Israel is legitimate.

From now on, using Carter’s own logic, we should note each of his remarks on the Middle East by saying they come from “Jimmy Carter, known anti-Semite.”  Two can play this game.

UpdateThe Anchoress has some extended thoughts on this topic, but also remembers the words of Hillary Clinton in defending domestic dissent:

Just replace “not patriotic” with “racist,” and it works perfectly.

Update II: My friend Kerry Picket picks up on the video from last summer which purportedly shows Carter referring to Obama in a racist way, but that strips the context from Carter’s remark.  I refuted that last year, although I will say that had someone on the Right said this exact thing, it would be all over the Internet and on every lefty blog.

I also warned people about making me defend Carter again.  I’m going to pull this blog over to the side of the road, I tell you …

Jimmy Carter, known anti-Semite

Ooh! Excellent idea!

Mr. Carter, please call your office.

Carter has moved to the left as he has grown older. His choices of causes to support have been mixed. His work to help Habitat for Humanity is commendable, his support for the racists and antisemitic folks is contemptible.

It is always hard for life-long public figures to know when to get off the stage. Mr. President, it is time to go. It has been time to go for a good five to ten years.

Orson Buggeigh on September 16, 2009 at 10:49 AM

If in today`s world of whites criticizing blacks in power = racism, then when the white Democrats criticized Sec. of State Rice were they being racists, too?

From the Washington Post, Jan. 26, 2006.
“Democrats Criticize Rice Over Iraq War”

Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.): Rice “has been a principal architect of policy errors that have tragically undermined our prospects for success” in Iraq.

Too many Republican senators allow Bush’s top aides “to get away with lying,” said Sen. Mark Dayton, a Democrat.
Dayton said, is to keep the administration from promoting officials “who have been instrumental in deceiving Congress and the American people, and regrettably that includes Dr. Rice.”

So were the white, male Democrats who said those critical remarks about Rice (a black woman), were they really just being racists?

Wait, wait….does this make Obama racist for calling Kayne West a jackass? I’m confused.

Stupidity has no color. Each and every race and ethnic group is capable of the same level of stupidity and poor judgement…and in Obama’s case, a horrendously illadvised political agenda rife with corruption and deception.

This is absurdly predictable. You knew this was coming, you knew the left was sitting on the race card, just waiting until public opinion turned on Obama so they could lay it down on the table.

So…does that mean the country has grown more racist since November? Is the president’s favorability rating in various polls a daily racism tracking poll? Maybe we can get a report right after the DJI/Nasdaq/SP report. “And racism is up 32 points today after Serena Williams threw a temper tantrum at the US Open but losses were moderated by David Robinson’s induction to the basketball Hall of Fame.

I hope they keep it coming. Somtehing has got to break and at some point, they are going to snap off the ‘black community’. I am currently reading a book by Thomas Sowell, so I’m a little amped up on this topic at the moment.

Miss Lillian was right. Billy Carter, purveyor of BillyBeer, WAS smarter than Jimmy, known anti-Semite and white-race basher.

Jimmy, the biggest failure ever as President of the United States, is often derided as JimmehCahtahPeenutFahmah when in actuality peanut farming was one of his greatest virtues. Unfortunately, the skill set did not translate well to the White House environment.

Besides presiding over an economy plagued by gasoline shortages caused by Arab OPEC embargoes and residential mortgage rates averaging 18%, Jimmy, a noted anti-Semite, permitted the existence of a captive embassy staff in Islamic Iran just after the Islamic Revolution there.

Jimmy Carter, noted anti-Semite, is the author of several ridiculous books which no one has read.

The CJ Political Report on September 16, 2009 at 11:09 AM

As is typical with racists, they project their ugly thought crimes onto anyone’s motives with whose politics they disagree. Such is the case with James Earl Carter, incidental president who was totally against school desegregation as a member of a Georgia school board in the 1950s. From The Real Jimmy Carter:

“Most of Carter’s actions [as school board member] upheld the dual school system prevalent in rural Georgia. …In 1956 Carter offered the motion to delay construction of a new school for blacks after white parents complained that black and white students would be taking the same roads to their respective schools. On another occasion, Carter supported buying new typewriters for white schools but used typewriters for black shcools.” This was 2 years after Brown vs. Board of Education.

“In 1965, when Carter was a state senator, his church decided to make an official policy of barring blacks–physically if necessary–from attending Sunday worship services. Carter was a deacon in the church, but [conveniently] missed the meeting at which the vote was taken.” The Real Jimmy Carter, Steven F. Hayward, pp 27-28

Jimmuh is himself at heart the stereotypical southern good-ol-boy DEMOCRAT racist that he tries to paint others as being. The handmaiden of this ilk is hatred of Jews as well. Goes with the territory.

Its only because there’s a reward involved for Democrats that they pursue the race industry, its just that Republicans believe in an everybody deserves liberty ideology versus the liberal I pay for your welfare therefore I own you MOS.

Conservatives don’t care or even see race, which is as it should be, its Democrats who are racist and search for every despicable opportunity to exploit others for their own selfish benefit, even at the expense of turning liberty into slavery.

How many Dems would there be without the race reward?

“The president is not only the head of government, he is the head of state. And no matter who he is or how much we disagree with his policies, the president should be treated with respect.”

Did the well known anti-Semite ever actually read the Constitution? Where does “head of state” appear? Where does it talk about how the POTUS shall be the leader of the country? What powers does it give as “head of state”?

No need to look this up; the answer is it does not. Oh, and no where does it say anyone has to respect the POTUS. In fact, the Constitution goes out of it’s way to remove any royalty or noble conferrence onto the POTUS and any other government official.

S. Weasel on September 16, 2009 at 12:00 PM

People believe there is a racist undertone to criticism of Obama because it’s so intense so early. It’s because there’s an irrational anger in many of the oppositions voices. It’s because a vast majority of the opposition are older white people.

The birther movement claiming he’s not legitimate; not a “real American.” That he’s Muslim or Indonesian.

It’s because people like Rush Limbaugh says “in Obama’s American, black kids beat up white kids while other black kids cheer.” Now, I don’t think Rush is a racist. But he’s an opportunist, and he’s exploiting the fear that people have that a black man is running their country.

It’s because people Republican officials forward racist jokes at the expense of the president. It’s because people doctor photos to portray Obama as a African witch doctor.

It’s because there weren’t tea parties when Bush was in office. There weren’t people calling him socialist when he ballooned the budget and signed SCHIP and prescription drug bills. It’s because no one cared about czars when Bush appointed 5x as many as Clinton.

You guys can ignore it if you want, but there is a big racial aspect to the opposition to Obama.

Carter – racist, anti-semite and hypocrite

iam7545 on September 16, 2009 at 12:19 PM

People believe there is a racist undertone to criticism of Obama because it’s so intense so early.

BS. People “believe” opposition to socialism is “racist” because it makes them feel good.

It’s because there weren’t tea parties when Bush was in office.

Bush didn’t triple the deficit with the first bill he signed.

There weren’t people calling him socialist when he ballooned the budget and signed SCHIP and prescription drug bills.

He wasn’t called socialist because he didn’t express the desire to have government run 1/6th of the economy. There was a hell of a lot of grumbling over SCHIP and the prescription drug plan.

It’s because no one cared about czars when Bush appointed 5x as many as Clinton.

Because 5 is less than, what 70-odd? Because the people appointed had less grandiose and authoritarian plans than the people Obama’s (illegally) giving power to?

The left whined incessantly about the budget during Bush’s administration — while never, ever, ever offering any of their precious government programs up for cutting. Now they’re declaring that we can borrow our way into prosperity, if only the borrowed money lines the pockets of people connected to them.

The only people who give a rat’s ass about the color of Obama’s skin are the people using it to try to shield him from criticism. Address the arguments, rather than what you imagine is their basis.

Crawford on September 16, 2009 at 12:24 PM

Let him keep talking.I think it’s great.People will either align themselves with these idiotic dems. or separate and that helps the rep.

ohiobabe on September 16, 2009 at 12:25 PM

You’re going to have to define racist before I buy that argument, Tom.

People voted for Obama because he claimed to be post-racial. And yet, since he got in, he seems to be the most hyper-racial president we’ve ever had — in terms of the people he hires, the knee-jerk support of Gates over the police, the fact that “racist” is shouted by his minions at every setback.

So, if recoiling from the sheer amount of racial politics being played by this regime is racist…then, yes. There is a strong element of racism in the dislike of this president.

If wanting everybody to shut-the-eff up about race for ten minutes is racist, then yeah.

S. Weasel on September 16, 2009 at 12:25 PM

I’m with Rush- I don’t know why anyone would voluntarily align themselves with Jimmeh Cahteh. He was the WORST president ever, even Georgia is embarrassed by his legacy.

anniekc on September 16, 2009 at 12:27 PM

So, Tom Shipley, do you think that Obama has any idea how much health care will cost, seeing as how the figures they give keep changing, and EVERY non-partisan group that estimates them says that the President is significantly understating the cost? Is that racist?

When I opposed health care during the Clinton admin, was that racist, too?

Is it racist for 95% of blacks to support Obama?

From now on, using Carter’s own logic, we should note each of his remarks on the Middle East by saying they come from “Jimmy Carter, known anti-Semite.” Two can play this game.

So you deride his logic, but then want to use it? How foolish. If it’s poor logic, don’t use it. This is a fairly simple rule-of-thumb, don’t you think?

Look, I agree that Carter is wrong to say the “overwhelming” portion of criticism towards Barack Obama is due to racism. But, using your own logic, it would also be wrong for you to call Carter an anti-Semite.

So don’t.

daesleeper on September 16, 2009 at 1:21 PM

I listened to the Carter interview and his argument was very weak.

P1) South has come a long way since 50′s-60′s but is still racist.
P2) The rest of the country shared South’s racist attitudes towards minorities in the past.
P3) The racism of the past still exists…. Read More
P4) There is a belief among white people that African Americans are not qualified to lead the country.

Conclusion: Overwhelming portion of animosity towards President Obama is based on the fact he’s a black man.

Even if you assume that every one of his premises are true (which I believe is highly debatable), the fact is that his premises fail to prove his conclusion.

It’s ridiculous to attempt to prove that a group of people and their arguments are based on racism without ever directly addressing that group of people (he only spoke of the country as a whole and the south in particular, not people that oppose Obama’s policies) and he never addressed what their arguments are and how those arguments are racist.

“Jimmy Carter, known anti-Semite.”

Nothing new there, anyone who has paid any attention to his words and actions in recent years knows this. That an ex-President is so pro-Islamic Fascism and vehemently anti-Semitic is a disgusting black mark on the Presidency.

(Oh, did I say ‘black’? Damn, I must be a raaaaacist.)

infidel4life on September 16, 2009 at 1:53 PM

This will only fuels more racism in minority groups towards the majority.
It’s already happening-ever since BO was elected, I have noticed ‘minorities’ ‘acting out’ more in public.
Like with more racial slurs toward ‘whitey’.
They feel they have more power now & so they choose to act like racists in retaliation for their own failures.
Pathetic.

A brief thought about Jimmy Carter

I’m not sure he even deserves that much thought.

Beaglemom on September 16, 2009 at 2:01 PM

I have to give Jimmy Carter credit – he is consistent. He was a bumbling, incompetent fool when in office. Now he is a senile, bumbling, incompetent fool.

It just gets better and better.

New respect for Morgan Freeman.

So were the white, male Democrats who said those critical remarks about Rice (a black woman), were they really just being racists?

albill on September 16, 2009 at 10:49 AM

And don’t forget, if current standards apply, they were not only racists, but misogynists as well.

MississippiMom on September 16, 2009 at 2:15 PM

These people who immediately throw out the race card are just showing that they are racist! Reverse racism is as bad if not worse than racism! They of all people should know better. They certainly do not do better.

This reminds me of a situation that occurred during counseling with my ex-wife. She told our counselor that my occasional late afternoon phone calls were just a way of checking up on her. I provided an explanation for the phone calls and the counselor felt my actions were appropriate. BUT, she went on to say that I needed to understand my ex viewed the calls as instrusive and I needed to change my ways. “XXXX’s perception is her reality.” said the counselor.

So rather than attempt to correct the misperception, the counselor was going to enable it rather than counter it with fact.

This is also how I see all this race-baiting practiced now.
Liberals such as Jimmy Carter, Mareen Dowd, Revs. Al and Jesse, etc. are predisposed to see racism whether it’s there or not. Their perception is their reality.

The MSM, who should be seeking the truth, are the enabling this misperception rather than addressing it with fact.

Are there people (Reps & Dems) that dislike Obama because he’s black, no doubt. Are there people who dislike Obama’s policies because they often represent further government encroachment on personal matters, your damn right.

If you (MSM or individual libs) are going to declare an entire movement or group racist, please provide factual supporting evidence and not just a few anecdotes.

Oh yeah, I made calls to forewarn of inclement weather and to let the spouse know if I was going to be late. My ex was as twisted as these race-baiters.

Yes, Carter knows he’s a bigot. Yes, he’s projecting.
