Rasmussen: Reid in deep trouble in Nevada
posted at 3:55 pm on September 15, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Has anyone noticed how quiet Harry Reid has been on pushing ObamaCare? Reid has let Max Baucus (D-MT) take the public lead in pushing for health-care reform and has limited himself mostly to general statements of support for industry reform. Rasmussen’s new polling in Nevada shows why. Reid trails both of his potential Republican challengers, and has gone under water on favorability in his state:
In what is currently a difficult political climate for Democrats, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid trails two potential Republican challengers seeking to unseat him as he faces reelection next year in Nevada.
The first Rasmussen Reports statewide telephone survey of the 2010 race shows Sue Lowden beating Reid by 10 percentage points, 50% to 40%. Lowden is chairwoman of the Nevada Republican Party and the preferred candidate of the Republican party establishment.
GOP hopeful Danny Tarkanian beats Reid by seven points, 50% to 43%. Tarkanian is a former basketball player for the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and the son of a legendary college basketball coach.
The Senate Majority Leader has a big problem at home with his image. Only 45% have a favorable opinion of Reid, while a solid majority of 54% view him unfavorably. Voters were more than twice as likely to view him strongly unfavorably (42%) as strongly favorably (20%), pointing to a big, big problem in getting re-elected in 14 months.
Part of the reason is ObamaCare. The overhaul of the health-care system is as popular in Nevada as it is nationwide, opposed by 52% of Nevada voters and supported by only 45%, exactly what the lastest numbers show nationwide. Fifty-one percent say it will make health-care worse, and 74% say it will lead to higher taxes on the middle class. Reid’s leadership in the Senate makes him responsible for those outcomes, and it has made him unpopular at a very bad time.
But just as with the Democrats nationwide, the independents are the key. In the Rasmussen poll, independent voters pick Lowden over Reid by a whopping 3-1 margin, 62%-20%. Reid doesn’t do much better with independents against Tarkanian, losing that matchup 65%-29%. Reid loses every age demographic and almost every income demographic against Lowden.
Generally speaking, when an incumbent drops below 50% support, the challenger has a good shot at winning. Getting back to 50% support would be a miracle for Reid. It won’t happen while Obama pushes ObamaCare.

Having a Senator named Tarkanian would be almost as bad as having one named Franken. I know nothing about Sue Lowden but better her than Whorehouse Harry Reid or the son of the most crooked college basketball coach in history.

Don’t fear the reaper Reid!
daesleeper on September 15, 2009 at 4:53 PM
I hope Tarkanian drives Reid out of business. ;)

We can carve “Here lies the career of Harry Reid. He never learned” on his political tombstone…

Sorry Ed, I drifted off. What was that?

From Ed’s article to God’s eyes….please!

OK, Reid, check
Dodd, Check
Specter, Check
Who else is a potential goner from the Dem side?
Landrieu? Is her term up? I think the demographics has changed enough in LA to ensure that she won’t win again.
Any other vulnerable Dems?

Sarah’s Dad and father-in-law were in Nevada campaigning for Tarkanian. Hmmmm.

Actually I don’t know who it is. That’s a paraphrased quote from some rambling stupid speech he made about illegal aliens. It was very funny.

Reid telling the biggest newspaper in his state that he hopes they go out of business probably didn’t help. Ya wonder whom they will endorse? Probably not Reid.
Steve Z on September 15, 2009 at 5:13 PM
Hugh Hewitt did a “Ten for Tark” request on his show. I think it was pretty successfu.
Cindy Munford on September 15, 2009 at 5:13 PM
Landrieu is not up in 2010–the other Republican Louisiana Senator, for whom politics made strange bedfellows, is up for re-election.
Another potential vulnerable Democrat is Blanche Lincoln (AR), especially if Mike Huckabee challenges her.
Bennet, an appointed Senator of Colorado replacing Salazar, is also in a close race right now.
There may also be a possibility in Delaware if the Republicans can find a good candidate against Beau Biden. Are there any DuPonts left? They used to own that state…
Steve Z on September 15, 2009 at 5:24 PM
..oh, give me a break, Percy. Grow a set and man up to the fact that the SON of Tark (not Tark himself) is running to unseat Dingy Harry. Isn’t this how we got our tit in the wringer in the first place? You know, like, I can’t vote for McCain because he’s not conservative enough. So now we’re worrying about the son of some guy while this old stooky, the menopausal botox be-yotch, and the Pantload-in-Chief is running our country into the ground.
Also, I’m thinkin’ that being the crookedest college roundball coach is kinda like saying, “the most unscrupulous used-car salesman on the lot”. The crap that is overlooked by the NCAA these days would make Tark look like a saint by comparison.
..and this from a UCLA grad who was in Westwood when the Wizard coached the Bruins.

I live in Nevada. Unemployment is at 13% in Las Vegas and everyone who bought a house in the past 4 years is underwater or in foreclosure. And the best Reid can do for his constituents is to tell the Las Vegas Review Journal (biggest newspaper in the state) that he hopes they go out of business and hold a telephone town hall in the middle of the workday?
Send him back to Searchlight.

Contrary to whatever, Dingy Harry may be good for us to keep around. He’s the gift that keeps on giving.

If the polls stay where they are, Reid could announce his retirement in order to save a well-deserved ass-kicking next year.

In this internet age, it is very hard to run as a centrist at home while pushing a far-left agenda in DC.
Just ask Tom “The Limo Man” Daschle.

If you want the OPPOSITE of Harry Reid, check out Sharron Angle.
I was a volunteer on her primary campaign against Dean Heller in 2006. She lost by only 400 votes.
Sharron served 4 terms (8 years) in the NV assembly. She was famous for being the ONLY member of the Assembly to vote NO on a major new tax bill, got enough attention that the Governor vetoed it. The veto held.
Very strong against illegal immigration, strict fiscal conservative, etc., etc. Really great person.
Check her out on the issues here.

Harry Reid does not speak for this Nevadan.

Bruno Strozek on September 15, 2009 at 6:12 PM
Hmph. If I were advising campaign staffs, cap&trade and “environmental issues” a.k.a. “Global Warming!” would be more important.
Casino guys, owners and workers both: Harry wants to shut you down. All those big displays and bright lights outside? — gone; irresponsible use of energy causing unnecessary CO2 emissions. All those private jets the high-rollers use to come give you money? — gone; irresponsible use of energy, etc. All those cars and buses rolling up I-15 to drop coins in the slots? — gone; irresponsible etc. etc. ad nauseum.
Air conditioning? –gone, until you can put in windmills (in a place the wind rarely blows) or solar panels (which won’t cool you much at night). Winter heating? –gone, same thing; you can’t have oil or natural gas, either (they emit CO2, which is badbadbadbad) and of course NO NUKES! NO NUKES! A THOUSAND TIMES NO NUKES!
“Health care” is a good stick to beat him with, but Nevadans live in a desert, dependent on energy (mostly from elsewhere) to even survive, let alone make a living. Harry says energy makes you sick, and wants to cut off the supply. What’s the Strip going to look like when he gets his wish?
Regards,
Ric

Still a long time before the election. Yet, it’s hard to believe that the Democrats are poised to lose a second Senate Majority leader because of the folks back home giving them the pink slip.

But the reasons these turds stay in office is because of the seniority power they wield. It ain’t over yet-he’ll spread pork all over the state.

Reid looks like the owner of a small off the main route motel. One that you would likely want to drive past late in the evening. Having said that, just today I castigated Glenn Beck for making fun of the founder of Acorn. Just couldn’t help myself. Sorry, Glenn.

From Sharron Angle’s website:
Together, we can change the way things are done in Washington. I believe in the greatness of
America and its people. I believe that limited government is the key to ensuring a bright future.
I believe it’s time for a change in Washington and defeating Harry Reid in 2010 is the best
place to start.
As a candidate for the U.S. Senate, I need your help!
If you are fed up with the direction current our country, fed up with one-party rule in Washington
where Barack Obama and Harry Reid have free reign to undermine the core principles that our
country was founded upon… Then join me in the fight to defeat Harry Reid and his liberal
agenda. With your help it can be done!
