Jimmy Carter: The “overwhelming” portion of animosity towards Obama is racist

posted at 9:01 pm on September 15, 2009 by Allahpundit

Deep thoughts from the guy whose book on Israel was most recently plugged by, um, Osama Bin Laden. I’m tempted to tout Jesse Walker’s Reason piece for the third time today on HA as an explanation for Jimmeh’s cynicism here, but I can’t quite do it. The difference between Carter and most of the left, I think, is that he really believes this crap. And, to boot, he really believes he’s doing good by mentioning it rather than poisoning race relations by equating opposition to government expansion with white supremacism.

It’s pointless to try to explain to people like this that they’re well well well into “boy who cried wolf” territory when it comes to the race card, but Brit Hume’s going to try. You’ll find the clip of that below the Carter video.

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

Update (Ed): Just FYI, conservative blogs seem to be plagued at the moment by trolls using racially inflammatory language as a way to make Carter’s point. We’ve warned about this before, but I’ll say it again — people making racist comments in these threads will get banned with no warning and no debate. If you can’t make your point without dropping the “N” word or a variant, then hit the road. I’ve deleted several such comments, as well as responses that excerpted the language.

I will say this, if the language that has been used is being construed as racist, I think it says something about how far we have come since the 60s.

Today people have to FIND the racist rhetoric and in most cases make it up because they have no argument.

Personally, I think we ARE in a post-racial world. It seems that it is only the race baiters that are peddling idiocy these days. I tend to use my parents as the barometer for these things. They have mellowed DRAMATICALLY over the years. Their arguments against the Obama campaign had nothing at all to day with his blackness but much more about his Greeness and Redness.

Pilgrim on September 16, 2009 at 8:23 AM

Most of Obama’s platforms are being authored by Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, who are despised more than Obama. Don’t tell anybody, but Pelosi and Reid are white!!!

Barney Frank: corrupt, white
Chris Dodd: corrupt, white

The economy is not a race issue. Overstepping constitutional authority is not a race issue. “Racism” is not a magic blanket the will shield Obama from scrutiny, criticism or accountability. It’s a cheap, overplayed excuse to ram through unpopular policies.

ace tomato on September 16, 2009 at 8:23 AM

This “racist” theme is an old Saul Alinsky trick by the Democrats to cut off all debate about Obama`s policies.

It is a variation on Saul Alinsky`s Rules for Radicals #5:
“Ridicule is man`s most potent weapon. It is almost impossible to counterattack ridicule. Also it infuriates the opposition. who then react to your advantage.”

By making the ridiculous claims that criticism towards Obama is racist, then those complaining about Obama`s policies must stop and then try to prove they are not racist. The subject is changed. Mission accomplished by the Democrats!

When Secretary of State Rice and Powell were in office, why weren`t the complaints against them by Democrats ever labeled as being racist?

The racism I see towards blacks has nothing to do with their politics. It’s simply because of their skin color.

crr6 on September 15, 2009 at 10:11 PM

Until you complete your explication of racism to complete what you see from blacks, your thought lacks balance. As it is, what you see is limited to your own ability to perceive and think logically. You’re stuck where words mean what you want them to mean and nothing else.

The left’s head loon has deployed the race card. This is a sign of the level of their desperation. The left has fully engaged in the racism strategy which means that they have no way of winning the debate on any issue much less health care.

The other great sign of desperation, is Obama’s constant appearances on TV. The only thing the man knows how to do is campaign. But, since he’s already won (he must have forgotten), people are tiring of him. At this point, I mute the TV or radio whenever he’s on. Every time he opens his mouth, his numbers drop except with his loon base who get wetter by the day.

The left continues to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. All conservatives need to do is let it happen without interfering.

Mark Steyn live now on Bill Bennett’s Morning In America.

Dissent is the new code word for “Racism”.

maverick muse on September 16, 2009 at 8:21 AM

When that dissent is followed by blatant racism comments or ridiculous screams of “Socialism”, “Marxism”, and “Communism” then no one can come to any other conclusion.

For example, Rush Limbaugh’s “Magic Negro” bit creates a narrative that the Left can use to paint Republicans as racist. Sure, that helps Limbaugh’s ratings but does tremendous damage to his message and the message of Conservatives.

Talk Radio has bred a culture of hyperbole and insanity that will continue to keep the GOP in the gutter. The larger people like Limbaugh, Hannity, and Beck get the smaller the GOP will get. There is a inverse relationship between the success of Conservative media and the success of the Republican Party.

I just want to say to all the Democrats out there who didn’t vote for Jesse Jackson in the ’84 and ’88 primaries, voted for Ed Rendell instead of Lynn Swan in the ’06 PA governor’s race, or have ever said anything negative about Michael Steele (ahem, Rachel, Keith), you are racists. Racist haters who hate black people. You racists.

WarEagle01 on September 16, 2009 at 8:52 AM

So it’s now “racist” to disagree with an unqualified, corrupt, incompetent politician who is trying to ram policies we completely disagree with, down our throats.

So the sociology class contrived word “racist” has lost any meaning whatsoever, wonderful.

Drop it from the language.

I have emailed Ed once also but when I think about it I wasn’t surprised that he lets things stand. It says more about the site that people voice their objections. This is going to sound crazy but I was proud of the “gang” when they took up for a troll. Someone was demanding that the troll be banned for being annoying. The same people who had been been beating said troll about the head and shoulders immediately changed course to stand up for the troll’s right to be wrong. There is always the chance that some iffy remarks didn’t come out as intended.

Cindy Munford on September 16, 2009 at 8:53 AM

Come to think of it, all my criticism of Obama IS racist. I’m extremely prejudiced against his race to be a more liberal, socialist and fiscally retarded President than Carter.

ace tomato on September 16, 2009 at 8:54 AM

All I’m gonna say (well, write):

I live in the South… and have for the last 29 years (NC, AL)… I have been active to one degree or another in conservative politics since the age of 14… I have read vast amounts of conservative literature and attended numerous conservative events (I was a volunteer in Raleigh for Jesse Helms in 1984 and attended his private victory party, etc.).

I have RARELY heard anything racist… and off the top of my head can recall no specifically racist remark. And had even a slightly suggestive racist remark been made, it would have been immediately met with a visceral response.

I worked with an African-American man (and we had a very good relationship) who was convinced that all Republicans were secret Klan members. He once “challenged” me with this question “would you EVER vote for a black man?”… to which I responded, “I’d vote for a purple piece of cheese if it was conservative enough.” I am sickened by the idea that conservatives somehow would not support African-Americans when there are so many example of the opposite. If you gave me a Sowell/Williams ticket in 2012, I’d dance to the polls with excitement (and I HATE that I even have to make this argument).

Conversely, I and my family have had to endure a small degree of racism. I’ve lived as a “minority” (a non-black in a town that was 68% black) and I live in a city and state that have large black populations. I’ll leave it at that… but suffice to say, when I have to talk to my kids about racism, it’s not because they’re guilty of it.

And “Rev” Wright referring to Italians as having “garlic noses” wasn’t exactly a fine moment in American politics for my family either.

That’s it. I’m tired of the same damn crap coming from latent racists on the Left, convinced that blacks are incapable of surviving without their help.

Loxodonta on September 16, 2009 at 8:59 AM

Where is that list of Freedoms you lost under Bush?

PappaMac on September 16, 2009 at 8:49 AM

The Patriot Act created surveillance powers that have no expiration date. Simple tasks such as reading a book in a library was cause for investigation by intelligence agencies. Intelligence agencies were also authorized to investigate citizens without first being charged or investigated for standard criminal activity.

Additionally, little is known of all the rights given to the federal government for tracking people. The Patriot Act gave the government more authority than granted under the Constitution.

Given the freedoms removed by the Patriot Act and the Bush Administration it is very curious that Conservatives are now using phases of “Tyranny” against the current administration. It is also very curious that Conservatives are now up in arms over government spending that has been out of control for longer than the 6 months that Obama has been President.

In other words, when you hitch your post to one political party for party loyalty reasons you reap what you sow. If Conservatives are truly Conservatives they will not align themselves to a particular political party. There is no difference between Republicans and Democrats.

Racism is all that Obama and the left have left … It’s sad to see. Post-racism, that’s one huge laugher. But you know that is the reason they pushed aside Hillary, assuming the race card would work for critics of Obama.

You might want to look into Carter’s Governorship … His campaign was ‘tinged with racism’ as Carter said. Carter got less than 10% of the black vote. His pappy was a well known white southern segregationist. Carter during his election to governor, refused on many occasions to condemn George Wallace.

And then there is Carter’s deal with Mugabe, and removing the Shah of Iran so modern Islamic Fascism and their terrorists would have a home State of their own.

Do you walk away when you see someone being asaulted on the street? I don’t see how avoidance helps in these situations. It merely enables the perpetrators and leaves the victims without any aid or comfort.

Of course, I confess that I can’t and don’t confront every bigot when I encounter one. I don’t have the time or energy. However, it would be good to have an honest and open discussion about it. And by “our ranks,” I meant the ranks of posters here at Hot Air.

I’ve been recalling my first college course on sociology. I started college quite late, so this was in the mid-70′s. In the first lecture, the professor said that all whites benefit from racism and blacks cannot be racist. In the discussion, I gave evidence that showed this was not the case. I got into big trouble for that.

It seems so much easier to remain quiet and avoid this discussion, or to let it devolve into an adolescent food fight. “You’re a racist!” And then, “No! You’re a racist for calling me a racist!” And eventually, the term racist means nothing. In the meantime, all types of bigotry remain alive and well, and they do great harm.

I’ve lived in the South much of my life (VA, SC, AL, LA) and find racism somewhat a mixed bag. Only once, from a co-worker, have I ever heard a blatantly racist remark and that wasn’t even an intentional comment just a lack of sensitivity about the PC realities of the 21st century. Otherwise, race issues often tend to bubble just under the surface as individuals tend to segregate themselves along racial lines, “traditionally black” colleges work to preserve race-based discrimination instead of embracing the larger society, and race is rarely a topic of open discussion unless attached to accusatations of wrong-doing (the Duke Lacrosse scandal being a perfect example).

In short, I would suggest that there really are two “Souths” each with a slightly different reality and viewpoint. Each rarely in conflict with the other but rarely interacting with the other as well.

Mr. Grump on September 16, 2009 at 9:19 AM

I wish Jimmuh Carter would hurry up and die so he can join Fat Ted Kennedy in the flames of hell. The man is a disgrace, both as a public official and a human being, and I’m sick of looking at his face. The only good thing he’ll ever do for humanity is leave the earth in a pine box (or have his ashes scattered if cremated).

Percy_Peabody on September 16, 2009 at 9:19 AM

Maybe I’m confused; Does Jimmah Cahter think HE’S black now?

Cybergeezer on September 16, 2009 at 9:19 AM

There is no racism in talk radio. But there certainly is race baiting in the media generally and in your posts specifically.

csdeven on September 16, 2009 at 9:14 AM

Under the current regime any dissent or criticism of the filthy liar in the White House is racism. You can’t be in opposition to the rat bastard traitor without the subtext emerging that whites are seething in anger that a black man is in the Presidency. Therefore, any dissent is not aimed at the policy but bringing down the uppity black who doesn’t know his place in society.

highhopes on September 16, 2009 at 9:20 AM

Yo! Jimmah; Read the Rasmussen Report on Hot Air! Or get somebody to read it for you.

How’s this?

Carter, the Blue-Eyed Kenyan,
Lived down in Plains.
And froliced in the Beltway Loop,
Where Political Correctness Reigns.

Little Barry Obama,
Loved to use that old man.
‘Cause every time the going got rough,
His distraction fit in the plan.

Carter, the Blue-Eyed Kenyan,
Lived down in Plains.
And froliced in the Beltway Loop,
Where Political Correctness Reigns.

Do you walk away when you see someone being asaulted on the street? I don’t see how avoidance helps in these situations. It merely enables the perpetrators and leaves the victims without any aid or comfort.

No, I don’t. Avoidance does not help in these situations, but there is no similarity between the ‘these’, if you will. Ignorance only victimizes the ignorant and it is of their own acquiescence. I wish not to aid and comfort that.

And by “our ranks,” I meant the ranks of posters here at Hot Air.

Ahh… I see. Misunderstood. Still applies though. Let that individual fester is what I do and will continue to do. You do as you wish. I’m not saying you should do what I do, merely stating my reason for why I do.

And eventually, the term racist means nothing. In the meantime, all types of bigotry remain alive and well, and they do great harm.

Loxodonta on September 16, 2009 at 9:11 AM

True. But in a sense, rendering the term meaningless is exactly what it deserves. The concept of it is as absurd as any low level thought can be.

Yes, Decider. And while you’re at it, please give your opinion on how Obama wants to extend the Patriot Act, set to expire in a few months. What’s your take on that? Are you going to go all Bush Crazy on Obama??

The Tea Parties and Town Hall protests will have much more impact if the participants will attack Obama’s policies directly and not him personally. When you attack someone personality, the content of your retort has no merit.

Decider on September 16, 2009 at 9:04 AM

I most frequently refer to the president as Barry because I think of him as a child. I ridicule him regularly about his lack of knowledge and narcissism. I do the same for others in his administration. So, when I do so, it’s without merit? Have you know sense of humor? Have you no sense of the power of ridicule?

Loxodonta on September 16, 2009 at 9:33 AM

bridgetown on September 16, 2009 at 9:31 AM

Obama is at fault just like Bush. Obama is also at fault by extending TARP. One day you party loyalists will realize that the Democrats and the Republicans are exactly the same. The same people that are paying Obama’s bills once paid Bush’s bills. Put your Republican or Democratic pom poms down and debate the actual issues.

Having party loyalty makes you sound like Sean “Talking Point” Hannity.

I prefer to define racism as racial bigotry, not the leftist ideological hogwash definition that has been foisted on us.

Using my preferred definition, I see racism in all races, some of it relatively harmless and silly, but some of it quite vicious, like that of Barry’s former pastor. And every once in a while, it turns violent, as in the school bus incident this week. That’s the racism I want to push back against, and not ignore.

If Republicans do not call out the hyperbole and racism talk radio and within their ranks at tea parties and town halls then normal Republicans will be painted with the same racsim brush.

Decider on September 16, 2009 at 9:08 AM

I choose who I call out and who I ignore. And it doesn’t matter to the Left what I do. As long as I oppose liberalism, Obama, and their handmaidens in Congress, academia and the MSM, Leftists are still going to paint me with every negative stereotype they can. That’s what they do.

The charge of RACISM is the last refuge of a scoundrel. Carter’s track record of being on the wrong side of just about every issue should disqualify him from the public stage. The racist boogey man exists in every liberals small mind.

The very heart of human society exists within its emotions. It is virtually impossible to separate “issues” from the vessel that transports them and to prescribe such a separation is at best naive. One can hope that emotional responses to individuals and their policies are non destructive, rational, and leveling but it is impossible to remove them from the equation because they are the primary force for all human behavior.
