Great moments in gatekeeping

Don Wade and Roma at Chicago’s WLS-AM ask outgoing ABC News anchor Charlie Gibson about why most media outlets have failed to cover the ACORN story — and they get a better answer than they must have expected. Instead of a discourse over editorial policy, Gibson proclaims his ignorance of the story — even though the Senate acted last night to cut off funds to the group, and days after the Census Bureau publicly extricated itself from its relationship with ACORN. When pressed, Gibson indicates that the story is apparently beneath his standards, as Michelle highlights in the transcript:
Don: Okay, here’s my news question. A Senate bill yesterday passes, cutting off funds to this group called ACORN. Now, we got that bill passed and we have the embarrassing video of ACORN staffers giving tax advice on how to set up a brothel with 13-year-old hookers. It has everything you could want – corruption and sleazy action at tax-funded organizations and it’s got government ties. But nobody’s covering that story. Why?
Gibson: HAHAHAHAHA. HEHEHE. I didn’t even know about it. Um. So, you’ve got me at a loss. I don’t know. Uh. Uh. But my goodness, if it’s got everything including sleaziness in it, we should talk about it this morning.
Roma: This is the American way!
Gibson: Or maybe this is just one you leave to the cables.
Roma: Well, I think this is a huge issue because there’s so much funding that goes into this organization…
Gibson: I know we’ve done some stories about ACORN before, but this one I don’t know about…
Roma: Jake Tapper did some blogging on it. I know he’s blogged at least once on this scandal.
Gibson: You guys are uh really up on the website.
A couple of points should be made. First, Gibson is not the entirety of ABC News. As Don and Roma point out, ABC has been reporting it through Jake Tapper, although currently only on the website.
All that being said, the ACORN story is not just a Kanye West celebrity dust-up. It involves tens of millions of taxpayer dollars, and potentially billions in upcoming legislation. ACORN has worked tirelessly on behalf of the Democratic Party in the last election cycle and beyond, helping to organize in communities on behalf of Obama’s domestic policy agenda. It’s a story worthy of national coverage, and leaving it to the cable news outlets may explain why people don’t bother to tune into the broadcast networks any longer to get informed.
Let’s pose the question this way. If the Federalist Society, which got a heaping helping of demonization during the John Roberts and Samuel Alito confirmation hearings, started giving advice to prospective pimps and hookers on tax evasion and hiding child-prostitution rings, does anyone think that the Charlie Gibsons and the Papers of Record in the US would let that slide to the cable networks? Or would it headline their outlets, complete with a dissection of Federalist Society support for Republicans?

Why am I routinely better informed than the New York Times, ABC, NBC, CBS and all of the other crap media outlets? It’s like these people all live on a different planet.
I should really invite Charlie Gibson over to my place and demonstrate the internet to him.
Cicero43 on September 15, 2009 at 3:01 PM
I agree with Charlie, that this is probably a thing to leave to the “cables”…
You guys have to realize, the way fox/beck/breitbart are handling the release of the materials to up the pressure doesn’t exactly lend itself towards getting other media outlets to get on the story…

ABC has been reporting it through Jake Tapper, although currently only on the website.
This is true, but even now ABC still has not reported any ACORN stories in its main headline section, even though they have room for all kinds of celebrity stories and purely local stories given national prominence — but not a word about ACORN. The silence is deafening.
jwolf on September 15, 2009 at 3:04 PM
This is now twice that Gibson has got national attention from comments on the Don and Roma show. The previous be the Cindy Shehann give it a rest comment. I wonder if he is still going to want to do his weekly appearance anymore?

Isn’t this the brainiac that looked down his nose at Palin? Jerk!
Off Topic: What does it say about Obama for him to be doing this media blitz this weekend? People on all sides keep saying overexposure is a bad thing for the guy. What does he do? Plans to be on every Sunday show. Will probably even give the early report on the Weather Channel.
Is this guy hard-headed, or what?

The answer is a resounding DUHHHHHH! Did you get your education from getaclue?????
Rovin on September 15, 2009 at 3:08 PM
And you should read some of those stories ABC wrote. They should be used as promotional material. With any luck maybe they be used by the defense at the impending trials and lawsuits. One question for Gibson; what exactly do you know about?

The guy is an old fart. As Ed points out elsewhere, the NYTimes and WaPo have totally ignored the story even up to the time of the Senate vote. As I mentioned in another thread, when the NYTimes has to link to a NYPost story about a NY City news story because they haven’t covered it themselves, it says something about how “newsworthy” a lot of editors seem to think this one is.
.

Kissmygrits on September 15, 2009 at 3:15 PM
Jimminy, I think he, and a vast array of other liberal pseudo news people retired their brains a year ago. Now Gibson is just letting his physical presence follow suit.
It’s so obvious he’s full of it here, and he has no issues lying about it. It’s just sad it’s come to this. But they brought it on themselves.

Charlie Gibson, YOU LIE! It never ceases to amaze me that so many people will utterly destroy their own reputations in furtherance of a failed leftist agenda. They are such good soldiers in helping Obama’s allies on the left rob the U.S. Treasury and further their corrupt activities. Charlie “I can’t see ACORN (on the news) from my house (or my office)” Gibson is a liar, and has outed himself as an Obama White House propagandist. What a disgraceful hack he is. Good riddance to bad rubbish. I look forward to Sarah Palin ripping him but good in a future posting. Let. Him. Have. It. Sarah.

If the Senate and Census have cut off Acorn, numerous states have indicted Acorn workers for voter fraud, and in light of the hidden camera pimp-n-ho videos, why is the State of Arizona still openly embracing Acorn?
