Did Senate vote blocking ACORN funding awaken the media?
posted at 8:48 am on September 15, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Did the media finally start informing its consumers, after a Senate vote defunding ACORN, about the undercover investigations at ACORN which showed staffers in three cities giving assistance for tax evasion by a prospective child-prostitution ring? After all, they did manage to report on the Van Jones story after his resignation forced media outlets to finally report that Barack Obama had hired a 9/11 Truther as a close adviser, with his hands on $80 billion for “green jobs” promotion. The widely bipartisan Senate vote stripping funding from the HUD and Transportation appropriation took place at 6 pm ET, plenty of time for the East Coast dailies to let their readers know about the vote — and the reasons for it.
The Los Angeles Times did get around to reporting it this morning:
The Senate voted Monday to block the Housing and Urban Development Department from giving grants to ACORN, a community organization under fire in voter-registration fraud cases.
The 83-7 vote came as ACORN , which stands for the Assn. of Community Organizations for Reform Now, is receiving bad publicity related to surreptitious videos. Two conservative activists posed as a prostitute and her pimp, then released a hidden-camera video in which ACORN employees in Baltimore advised the couple on house-buying and how to account for the woman’s income on tax forms. Two other videos, aired frequently on media outlets such as the Fox News Channel, depict similar situations in Brooklyn and Washington, D.C.
If the House agrees with the Senate, ACORN could not win HUD grants for programs such as counseling low-income people on how to get mortgages.
Last week, the Census Bureau severed ties with ACORN, saying it does not want the group’s help with the 2010 count. The group, which advocates for poor people, conducted a voter registration effort last year and became a target of conservatives when some workers were accused of submitting false registration forms with names including Mickey Mouse.
How about the New York Times and the Washington Post? Neither newspaper reported on Van Jones’ Trutherism until an embarrassed White House pushed Jones out the door, leaving them to explain to their readers why a high-ranking Presidential adviser quit — and why they hadn’t mentioned the scandal that forced the issue until that moment. The Washington Post, which last I looked publishes from the same city in which Congress works, reprinted the AP coverage rather than assign a writer:
The 83 to 7 vote would deny housing and community grant funding to ACORN, which stands for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.
The action came as the group is suffering from bad publicity after a duo of conservative activists, who posed as a prostitute and her pimp, released hidden-camera videos in which ACORN employees in Baltimore gave advice on home buying and how to account on tax forms for the woman’s income. Other videos depict similar situations in ACORN offices in Brooklyn and the District.
The Senate’s move would mean that ACORN would not be able to win HUD grants for programs such as counseling low-income people on how to get mortgages and for fair-housing education and outreach.
The New York Times, which is another AP client, didn’t even bother to put that in print. Their Caucus blog reported it on line, but their print readers won’t have a clue. That’s exactly how the Times treated their print readers with the Van Jones scandal, and also how they handled the Eason Jordan controversy back in 2005.
If newspapers keep their print readers in the dark like this, is it any wonder they have fewer and fewer of them? After all, if the New York Times keeps its news segregated into its online blogs (especially political news it doesn’t like), that signals readers that the print edition is more or less worthless and drives them online instead. Maybe print media executives should stop complaining about Internet competition and start reporting all of the news in the print editions.

I just found out this morning that two of the eight senators who voted against ending funding for ACORN were none other than my own Illinois senators, Big Dickie Durbin and Roland “Magic Man” Burris.
With all the political corruption running amok in Illinois at the present time, it should be of little surprise to anyone that these two excessively lame excuses for Senate leadership would pull something like this.

Charlie Gibson was interviewed on WLS-AM this morning, and the hosts, Don Wade and Roma, asked him why the Senate vote and the video of the faux pimp and prostitute getting assistance from ACORN workers to set up a child prostituion business was not getting any coverage from the MSM. Charlie laughed and said he had not heard of any of this! The hosts commented on how sleazy the video was, and Charlie then said perhaps it should be left for only the cable stations. Ignorance and elitism, a deadly combination.

I prefer the term state-run media for the way they act as a propaganda ministry for the filthy liar in the White House and his corrupt party. They don’t slant left, they are leftists without any pretense at objectivity.
The good news is that the House GOP is calling for ACORN’s funding to stop. It may not get past Pelosi but the state-run media can’t ignore the story forever.
highhopes on September 15, 2009 at 10:06 AM
Bernard Goldberg was on O’Rielly last night and made a very good point. He said calling the leftist media the mainstream media is a false description and only serves to legitimize them. The reality is there’s nothing “mainstream” about such partisan reporting and non-reporting and it’s time to stop calling it that. He advocated calling them the OLM (Old Liberal Media), which is much better (although that still is an insult to classic open minded liberals because these propagandists clearly are not).

Last week in an interview with Sean Hannity, George Stephanopolous said he had never heard of the problems in Van Jones’ background. Hannity listed another half dozen questionable histories and corruptions among the Obama czars that Stephanopolous also didn’t know about. All the info available if someone had ABC had simply Googled the czars’ names.
True journalism in the big media is dead and the Gibsons and Stephanopolous’s are the pallbearers.

ACORN is simply the Right’s way to try to “get to” Obama. They can not touch him politically so they try to create a narrative with some 3rd tier organization no one cares about or even knows about. I had never heard of ACORN nor do I care about them now that Beck has made this the issue of his career.
Hey, I would have no problem if Fox “News” wants to rename their network the Fox “ACORN Investigation” channel, or the Fox “Comedy” channel, or simply “RNC TV” but don’t think that a non-issue of some miscellaneous, corrupt organization is of importance to the rest of the world. If you are right, then Obama has nothing to fear, since he’s totally not connected to ACORN. But, if by some faint chance, he is connected to ACORN, then the opposite occurs — he has everything to fear.
Now, regardless of whether you never heard of them or not, they were written into the Stimulus (to the tune of 8 Billion Dollars [pinkie up]), were slated to be paid to help with the Census, and were asking for extra Federal money via grants to advance their agenda. To have that kind of money thrown at them means they’ve done something good for the money throwers.
Given what I’ve just said, it seems more probable that “ACORN is the Left’s way to try to get to the Right”.
Which, if true, means the Right has won this fight with a TKO, given that the Left was forced to ding ACORN big time.

ACORN is a Republican bogeyman. Little more. This as a tactic to get to Obama will not work and it will drop off the Fox radar.
If I were trying to create a narrative about any organization I could. For example, I could create a narrative about Haliburton or Blackwater. Report on it 24/7 and get Liberals worked up about it. Every Liberal Loon would be protesting Haliburton and Blackwater with comparison of Bush to Hitler and yelling that Bush is taking away our freedoms.
Haliburton is the Liberal bogeyman. ACORN is the Conservative bogeyman. You people chose your political parties teams like football fans chose their teams. The Republican train is led by Fox News. The Democratic train is led by MSNBC. Both are the same but different. It is a spectacle to watch just how idiotic both teams are, especially when you think you have a winning issue.
The Democrats/Liberals thought they had the winning issue to “get at” Bush with Haliburton. We see how that turned out. A non-issue. Now the Republicans/Conservatives think they have a winning issue with ACORN. The end result will be the same.

If it’s such a “non-story”, kindly please explain why the Democrat-controlled House and the Democrat-controlled Senate are falling all over themselves in a effort to put as much distance between themselves and ACORN as they can.

Who cares except Fox News so they can squeeze some ratings from their audience?

So you’re admitting that you’re just fine with your elected officials wasting valuable time that could be spent ramming ObamaCare down our throats on “non-stories” whipped up by the “right-wing hate machine” ?
Duly noted.

I can only wonder…. do these liberal media networks feel compelled to protect Obama, and ignore major stories that might reflect badly on Obama, because they are ignorant? I doubt it. So which is it? They either feel a true loyalty to Obama that they probably wouldn’t have felt, had Hillary won, or their hope, and change comes in the guise of truly being state run media. It would be easier for them to just be, rather than have to compete for stories, advertising dollars, etc…
They deliberately, at this point tank their own ratings, and credibility. Perhaps there is something to this, that we aren’t privvy to yet. Scary, but I’m very curious as to why these morons continue to behave like…….morons.
