Did Senate vote blocking ACORN funding awaken the media?

posted at 8:48 am on September 15, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Did the media finally start informing its consumers, after a Senate vote defunding ACORN, about the undercover investigations at ACORN which showed staffers in three cities giving assistance for tax evasion by a prospective child-prostitution ring?  After all, they did manage to report on the Van Jones story after his resignation forced media outlets to finally report that Barack Obama had hired a 9/11 Truther as a close adviser, with his hands on $80 billion for “green jobs” promotion.  The widely bipartisan Senate vote stripping funding from the HUD and Transportation appropriation took place at 6 pm ET, plenty of time for the East Coast dailies to let their readers know about the vote  — and the reasons for it.

The Los Angeles Times did get around to reporting it this morning:

The Senate voted Monday to block the Housing and Urban Development Department from giving grants to ACORN, a community organization under fire in voter-registration fraud cases.

The 83-7 vote came as ACORN , which stands for the Assn. of Community Organizations for Reform Now, is receiving bad publicity related to surreptitious videos. Two conservative activists posed as a prostitute and her pimp, then released a hidden-camera video in which ACORN employees in Baltimore advised the couple on house-buying and how to account for the woman’s income on tax forms. Two other videos, aired frequently on media outlets such as the Fox News Channel, depict similar situations in Brooklyn and Washington, D.C.

If the House agrees with the Senate, ACORN could not win HUD grants for programs such as counseling low-income people on how to get mortgages.

Last week, the Census Bureau severed ties with ACORN, saying it does not want the group’s help with the 2010 count. The group, which advocates for poor people, conducted a voter registration effort last year and became a target of conservatives when some workers were accused of submitting false registration forms with names including Mickey Mouse.

How about the New York Times and the Washington Post?  Neither newspaper reported on Van Jones’ Trutherism until an embarrassed White House pushed Jones out the door, leaving them to explain to their readers why a high-ranking Presidential adviser quit — and why they hadn’t mentioned the scandal that forced the issue until that moment.  The Washington Post, which last I looked publishes from the same city in which Congress works, reprinted the AP coverage rather than assign a writer:

The 83 to 7 vote would deny housing and community grant funding to ACORN, which stands for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

The action came as the group is suffering from bad publicity after a duo of conservative activists, who posed as a prostitute and her pimp, released hidden-camera videos in which ACORN employees in Baltimore gave advice on home buying and how to account on tax forms for the woman’s income. Other videos depict similar situations in ACORN offices in Brooklyn and the District.

The Senate’s move would mean that ACORN would not be able to win HUD grants for programs such as counseling low-income people on how to get mortgages and for fair-housing education and outreach.

The New York Times, which is another AP client, didn’t even bother to put that in print.  Their Caucus blog reported it on line, but their print readers won’t have a clue.  That’s exactly how the Times treated their print readers with the Van Jones scandal, and also how they handled the Eason Jordan controversy back in 2005.

If newspapers keep their print readers in the dark like this, is it any wonder they have fewer and fewer of them?  After all, if the New York Times keeps its news segregated into its online blogs (especially political news it doesn’t like), that signals readers that the print edition is more or less worthless and drives them online instead.  Maybe print media executives should stop complaining about Internet competition and start reporting all of the news in the print editions.

I wonder if it is beginning to sink in that “where there’s smoke, there’s fire.” That this could be an incredibly corrupt administration, and that the Watergate story of the Twenty-First Century might be broken by Fox News or Glenn Beck.

Will the MSM’s slavish devotion to the One outweigh its own desire for journalistic glory. Stay tuned.

I think America is waking up to that fact, hoosiermama.

That is why this movement will continue to grow. We are sick of being bombarded with liberal propaganda – and the more Americans that get awoken to it the quicker we will get our country back.

Mr Purple on September 15, 2009 at 8:55 AM

Of course they won’t cover it. But what we’ve learned these past few weeks is that it doesn’t matter anymore. We don’t need the drive-bys. Either for our own personal validation or more importantly to affect real change in Washington.

So let their ratings and circulation numbers continue to plummet. They’re already obsolete. Soon they’ll be extinct.

Notice that what little coverage the rest of the media had on this story they didn’t bother to mention the brothel full of underage illegals. Didn’t bother pointing out the money laundering angle or the tax fraud angle. They made this sound like ACORN was trying to help a downtrodden hooker and those bigoted and heartless conservatives and FOX news has a problem with the poor unwashed masses.
That’s why circulation for these papers are way WAY down.

Hey, can we ban funding for DynCorp and other private contractors that engage in sex slavery? I mean, if we’re going after a community organizing association because some of its staffers (who were subsequently fired) gave advice to a guy who claimed to be a pimp, then why not go after private military contractors who actually do traffick in human beings?

Had the fellow behind those videos been Michael Moore, I don’t think “surreptitious” would have been the descriptive. More like “ground breaking”, “bold”, “whistle-blowing”, ad nauseum. But not the synonym for “sneaky”.

In fairness to the young journalists and Breitbart, Beck didn’t “break” these stories, except maybe the tv versions, but he’s still hammering away at them much more persistently than anyone else. And I really like the way he’s tying the corruption up into a nice little circle, all ultimately pointing back to DC.

mankai on September 15, 2009 at 9:05 AM

Aside from actively trying to cover-up these types of stories because they would hurt your side, papers like the Times and Post have so much political correctness, identity politics and liberalism in general in their newsrooms that even if some of the editors wanted to assign the ACORN story, they know they would have to deal with accusations of racism and (gasp) even being biased towards conservatives from their own staffers, with no guarantee the higher-ups int he company (who also are being afraid of being painted as the “wrong type of person” in the right social circles) would have their backs.

So even if some of the people there know they’re going to draw scorn and lose readers by not covering the ACORN or the Van Jones stories, and possibly threaten their own long-term employment due to the loss of revenue/jobs, they see it better than being hauled up in front of some internal neo-Stalinst show trial within their own newsroom and facing having to defend themselves from the same accusations the left throws at Fox News, talk radio and anyone opposing Obama or ACORN in general.

Nice try, Sparky… but not the same thing. DynCorp, as a corporate entity, was in the Balkans to fix helicopters- not to abet prostitution. It’s misdeed was to engage in a cover-up of the crimes of (what, a couple?) employees acting entirely apart from the company’s operations. ACORN, on the other hand, seems to be operating multiple branchs with a primary organizational mission of defrauding the government.

But hey, you can still scream ChimpyMcBusHitlerHalliburton and call me a racist.

I was just searching this. NYT had 2 wire stories and a blog entry as far as I can tell. And the blog entry give short shrift to the prostitution tax evasion tape and tries to make it sound like the vote registration fraud was the main issue.

Two of the taped stings occurred in New York and DC, and the big papers are trying to ignore a big local/national story. It’s a disgrace. The media is going down with ACORN. I’m looking forward to hearing the new tape from the West Coast this morning.

The 83-7 vote came as ACORN , which stands for the Assn. of Community Organizations for Reform Now, is receiving bad publicity related to surreptitious videos.

Not that anyone would know it by reading the newspaper in which this article appeared, of course.

Two conservative activists posed as a prostitute and her pimp, then released a hidden-camera video in which ACORN employees in Baltimore advised the couple on house-buying and how to account for the woman’s income on tax forms.

Note how this obliquely mentions but one of the crimes the purported pimp and prostitute proposed; and neither paper could bring itself to call it “money laundering”.

Not a word about the plan to turn the house into a brothel staffed by underage Salvadoran girls.

All of this and none of these ACORN workers batted an eyelash.

The old media’s selective use of facts makes it’s readership dumb and dumber by the minute. For “intellectuals” the Progressives sure like living in the dark. And they think their brains are larger than most. Ha!

Greek Fire on September 15, 2009 at 9:15 AM

My guess is the latter. Stories usually have a specific space that they are allotted. Back when I wrote for a medium-sized daily, I don’t believe I ever wrote a first draft that fit in the space I was given. So you’ve got to cut room wherever you can. Sometimes that’s by removing whole grafs and words. I typically didn’t try to abbreviate words but wherever an abbreviation is acceptable in AP style (as it is here) it’s technically OK even though I still probably wouldn’t do it. There are other situations where abbreviations are required.

Thanks for a good laugh
what was it Michelle said, Barack chose to work for this fine organization instead of the big boys on Wall Street.

Well no damn wonder, the money is better Michelle.

It may be safe to assume that the MSM is just as corrupt, at its very heart, as ACORN.

Wouldn’t 40+ years of its race-baiting coverage convince anyone?

I hope against hope that Giles and O’Keefe have footage of their attempts to alert local newspapers and media of their findings at ACORN. If not, perhaps it is time to employ the same tactics with them.

Beck is going to expose another video this AM on his radio show.

BrianA on September 15, 2009 at 9:31 AM

The audio is coming on the beck show around 9AM central/10AM eastern…

Apparently someone gets caught telling them not to teach the imported prostitutes not to read..

ninjapirate on September 15, 2009 at 9:32 AM

Two things:

First, the MSM knows that they made Obama, and in like fashion, they could break him with negative coverage, or as some say, the truth. They also know that to take down (or at least dress down Obama) is to take down themselves since most of the issues with Obama’s character, associations, beliefs, etc. could easily have been addressed beginning in 2007, when they were blatantly ignored, or at the least minimized. Obama’s brand was built with very carefully placed blocks and if any of those blocks are removed then his brand takes a major hit. The MSM won’t report any of this because to do so would be to destroy the “Obama” they’ve constructed.

Second, the press LIKES Obama and his policies (yeah-big surprise). With the dumbing down of journalism with the likes of Olbermann (I know, but he is on a news channel), Chris Matthews, Chuck Todd and the rest, it’s no wonder that objectivity (or at least some semblance of it) is gone, not that they were there to begin with in large amounts, but still. This favoritism has been going on for decades but now it’s so blatant that any arguments to negate it are laughable. That’s why they sweep as much of this under the rug as possible.

Not a word about the plan to turn the house into a brothel staffed by underage Salvadoran girls.

The Monster on September 15, 2009 at 9:09 AM

Too intense for the readership, I guess. But, as a subscriber to the LA Times, I could have handled it…

Let me rephrase that… ACORN tells them that they shouldn’t teach the imported prostitutes to read…

And those are the imported child prostitutes from el Salvidor or hondurus or whatever….

I agree with Bernie Goldberg — stop calling ABC-CBS-NBC-NYT-xxx the Main Stream Media as they are NOT mainstream.

Time to call them “LSM” — which can be “Liberal Stream Media”, “Left Slanted Media”, “Lying Sack of Manure”. . .

The sad part is, this isn’t limted to the press, it goes all the way up the corporate ladder at GE, Disney, etc…

I know why GE keeps funding MSNBC and it’s news department, because they have positioned themselves to profit from green products, and they are also in a better position to operate under any restrictive “green” legislation than their competitors.

Disney is more of a mystery, because I’m sure theme park attendance is way down, and you would think movie revenues would fall, and advertising dollars become leaner.

It just doesn’t make any sense, from a business standpoint for any of the networks and major newspapers to keep shooting themselves in the foot. Why aren’t the stockholders screaming? I can’t figure it out.

A normal business would tell these clowns to STFU and stop helping this guy wreck the economy or your news department will be the first to get axed. Not to mention the fact that they cater to a shrinking audience.

OK, this little piece of audio isn’t all that great.. I think there is suppose to be more though..

WOW. Rush was right: “Women & Minorities Hardest Hit.” Actually it’s Underage Women. Scumsuckers. They have no souls.

Time to translate this into Spanish and hang it around the necks of the left. Rinse and repeat.

hoosiermama on September 15, 2009 at 9:49 AM

Or, they coujld all be like NBC’s Chuck Todd who said Van Jones and ACORN are both “no big deal”.

Behind Olbermann, this guy is the biggest disgrace in media.
