Chuck Todd on covering Van Jones: “Is that the best use of the time of the mainstream media?”
posted at 8:19 pm on September 15, 2009 by Allahpundit
Via Breitbart, another great moment in gatekeeping from a guy who spent last week spin-doctoring Joe Wilson’s outburst for the White House, replete with a heavy-handed racial narrative to explain southern antipathy to The One’s agenda. Evidently the valuable time of the mainstream media is better spent coming up with stuff to air in lieu of covering the ACORN story and concocting ever new and more creative ways in which to dismiss criticisms of Obama as racist. Never mind that the whole point of the Van Jones story is that Barry O’s czar fetish constitutes an end-around the typical constitutional process for confirming administration officials in positions of power. Not enough of an angle for you guys, huh?
Exit question: As I recall, Jake Tapper wrote multiple posts about the Van Jones story on his blog at ABC. Who wants to be the one to tell him that his news priorities are out of whack?

No. Clearly the best use of the time of the mainstream media is showing hardcore pornography and or football. Optimally, a clever TV exec could figure a way to combine them in one package.
But as long as you are going to call yourself a news organization…

The best use of their time would be in seeking new employment, in a field in which they could be both ethical, competent, and productive.
Since that’s unlikely to happen, reporting on corruption in the White House will have to take a close second.

As the saying goes, the bias in the press isn’t that they tell you want to think; the bias is that they tell you what to think about.
Or, in this case, what not to think about.
MSNBC’s new slogan: We don’t report so that you can’t decide.
“Green jobs” were supposed to be the future of America as we moved from fossil fuels to renewable energy. And Van Jones was to help the President and the nation make this change.
So, all that was just hooey?
Sure, his dimissal didn’t warrant Cabinet level coverage; but Todd’s wave of the hand is just absurd. This is all about Beck and Fox. Todd doesn’t want to give credit to both for pushing this matter.

Apparently being one of the President’s hand picked Tsars with control over $30 billion is not a big deal. We’ve all seen video of the President’s closest advisor gleefully acknowledging that she has closely followed the self avowed communist’s career.
Gee Chuck, if that’s not a big deal I don’t know what is. Perhaps more Palin stories or Dick Chenney….

Actually, airing The Simpsons re-runs would fill the NBC Nightly News slot with considerably more interest generated. That is if FOX Entertainment would be willing to give them up. If not The Simpsons why not Sponge Bob?

ultracon on September 15, 2009 at 8:42 PM
Sitting here watching NBC Nightly News run several opening stories about how we’re all racists – capped off by Jimmy Carter who says the white people protesting are doing it because they don’t think a black person is capable of running the country. He’s so far off I can’t even see him from here!
My emotions are like a roller coaster. One hour I’m hopeful, the next I don’t think anything will change – the MSM is so powerful.

We are living in new times. We don’t need NBC News to report about Van Jones or ACORN!
terryannonline on September 15, 2009 at 8:53 PM
I know it’s been said but it’s hard to truly appreciate its significance when you’re living it: we’re in the midst of the decline and fall of the MSM. They’ve always been slanted left but it was usually veiled. Since Obama won the Dems nomination, they’ve not even tried to hide it. That works fine if you’ve got a monopoly on information but with Fox News and the internet, that’s now gone. Also, the MSM has got zero credibility, as Chuck Todd vividly illustrated, and once your credibility is gone, it’s gone. They’re not going to get it back. That’s big folks.

Tapper’s not a conservative, but at least he gets the internet and alternative media outlets, and understands the big networks and dailies can no longer expect a story not favoring their side to not get out if they just don’t cover it. And he’s snarky enough to ask Gibbs questions that make him squirm, in the same way he caused problems for Bush spoksepersons before that.
Todd in the past seemed to know better than what he’s saying now, but apparently has decided that — after losing out to David Gregory for the “Meet the Press” host’s spot following Russert’s death — that to get ahead at NBC, you’ve got to spout the company line, especially when he’s on MSNBC where what core audience they have expects stuff like this.
