As the House prepares to censure Wilson …

posted at 10:12 am on September 15, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The House will prepare a censure for Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) for his interjection during the speech by Barack Obama last Wednesday in a joint session, “You lie!”  After waffling on the issue for a couple of days, Speaker Nancy Pelosi will hold a vote to publicly punish Wilson for his bad manners.  However, this doesn’t exactly look like a winner politically, especially since Wilson’s interjection wound up exposing the lack of enforcement on citizenship in the ObamaCare system:

As early as Tuesday, House leaders could bring to the floor a resolution of disapproval aimed at Mr. Wilson, though the timing is uncertain, said a House Democratic leadership aide who described the issue as one of conduct, not speech.

“Congressman Wilson’s outburst during the joint session was a breach of decorum and brought discredit to the House,” the aide said. “It is common for members to address such breaches themselves rather than force action by the full House. Failure to respond would mean consent for that kind of conduct.”

Mr. Wilson’s critics cite his conduct as evidence of a deteriorating political climate and some are trying to use it to argue that the Republican Party more broadly is anti-immigrant. On Tuesday, a group of religious leaders is holding a prayer vigil calling for an end to what they describe as “hateful rhetoric.”

I do think that Wilson should not have interrupted Obama’s speech and was right to offer Obama a direct apology, which Obama accepted.  However, Democrats now want to overplay their hand by claiming that a charge of lying is tantamount to “hate speech”.  If so, as Gateway Pundit points out, Democrats did nothing to restrain their own member from engaging in similar “hate speech” in 2007, during — of all things — the debate over the expansion of S-CHIP:

I actually live-blogged this debate at Captain’s Quarters when it took place in October 2007.  At the time, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing from Stark.  Raw Story has the entire transcript (emphases mine):

First of all, I’m just amazed that they can’t figure out– the Republicans are worried that we can’t pay for insuring an additional ten million children. They sure don’t care about finding $200 billion to fight the illegal war in Iraq. Where are you gonna get that money? You gonna tell us lies, like you’re telling us today? Is that how you’re going to fund the war? You don’t have the money to fund the war or children, but you’re going to spend it to blow up innocent people, if we could get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the President’s amusement.

This bill would provide health care for ten million children and, unlike the President’s own kids, these children can’t see a doctor or receive necessary care. Six million are insured through the Children’s Health Insurance Program and they’ll do better in school, and in life. In California, the President’s veto will cause the legislature to draw up emergency regulations to cut some 800,000 children off the rolls in California and create a waiting list.

I hope my California Republican colleagues will understand that if they don’t vote to override this veto, they are destroying health care for many of our children in California.

In the previous job as an actor, our Governor used to play make-believe and blow things up. Well, [the] President and Republicans in Congress are playing make-believe today with children’s lives. They claim we can’t afford health care. They say the bill will socialize medicine. Tell that to Orrin Hatch, Chuck Grassley and Ted Stevens, those socialists on the other side of this capitol. The truth is: [The] CHIP program enables states to cover children primarily through private health care plans. But, President Bush’s statements about children’s health shouldn’t be taken any more seriously than his lies about the war in Iraq. The truth is that Bush just likes to blow things up… in Iraq, in the United States, and in Congress.

I urge my colleagues to vote to override his veto. America’s children need and deserve health care, despite the President’s desire to deny it to them.

If “You lie” qualifies as “hateful rhetoric”, then Stark’s lunatic rant should qualify for a gold medal in the lympic event. Did Democrats, enjoying the first year of their majority, vote to censure Stark for calling the President a liar — or more egregiously, for claiming that Bush enjoyed seeing Americans and Iraqis die for his “amusement”? No, although Stark did get a warning from the presider after Republicans complained repeatedly about his insults.

If Pelosi wants to censure Wilson, then she has unfinished business from 2007 to attend first.

Democrat politicians have acted like glue-sniffing, juvenile delinquents for decades.

It’s who they are.

A censure from geriatric hippie Pelosi is a badge of honor.

Pelosi is the worst House Speaker in American history because she’s as corrupt and incompetent as they come.

Congress is a three ring circus. Democrat incumbents need to be thrown out by the bushel in 2012.

Joe Wilson should go on the talk circuit and say two things.

1) What i did was wrong and a censure was appropriate.

2) Obama was lying throughout the entirety of his speech (then tick off all the lies)

Go ahead Democrats, give Wilson a ticket to the talkshows.

Fox outlined yesterday another time when Fortney called Bush a liar on the House floor. According to the rules of the house as established by Jefferson, it is never in order for a member to call the President a liar or a hypocrite. He was admonished at the time by the Speaker Pro Temp, who asked him to suspend but did nothing more.

Joe Wilson did it once. It was on national TV, so he gets a spanking from Mama Pelosi (who is such a hypocrite it isn’t funny. “It is common for members to address such breaches themselves rather than force action by the full House?” He addressed it! He rightfully apologized to the President!). Fortney does it when he thinks no one is looking and gets away with it.

NeighborhoodCatLady on September 15, 2009 at 10:29 AM

If I were Wilson, I’d be hanging a framed copy of this censure on my office wall. Nancy Pelosi has ignored William Jefferson’s crimes and is ignoring the fact that the Chair of the Appropriations Committee is a tax cheat….

Yet the only thing they want to act on is Joe Wilson’s outburst? Cenusure of this corrupt body by a bunch of corrupt Democrats is meaningless.

I am sorry, but Rep. Wilson has apologized to the President, whom he interrupted in public. Any more, especially by others demanding it, is tantamount to setting him up as a scapegoat, or allowing others attain a sense of credibility that they did not earn.

Let’s look at the Demoncrates history of calling President Bush and others representing the people of the Republic, lairs, or worse and not demanding any form of retribution.

Once again, the Democrats are over-reacting to the degree that one would begin to question the sanity of the party’s leadership.

All dreaded it—all sought to avert it. ..Both parties deprecated war; but one of them would make war rather than let the nation survive; and the other would accept war rather than let it perish. And the war came.

Where we are headed. There is a different way. But I do not think we will take it–or better said, won’t be able to take it, eventually, not and maintain any sense of self-worth as a free man. Pity.

I beseech reasonable Democrats and liberals, and most importantly, the press, to understand that there is genuine and honest opposition out there, grounded in rational thoughts and noble hearts, that it is not going away, and that while political defeats can be accepted, rigged games can not.

The rules have got to apply to both sides, or the Republic will fall. I cannot be more blunt. This is not me trying to create the future–it is me predicting the future.

At some point the Democrats have got to decide if faction is more important than nation. I have no problem with a light rapping of Mr. Wilson’s knuckles. I have a huge problem with his being the only ones, or with some sanctimonious fiery denunciation while ignoring the incredible amount of bad behaviour from Democratic representatives. If the Republic is not to eventually have serious problems, they can no longer be as Father Mapple, climbing up to the pew of power and then pulling up the rope ladder behind them.

It was rude but, honestly, what do you do when the elected leader of the nation is telling easily refutable lies? Wait and hope that the GOP has a killer “rebuttal?” Go on the floor of the house the next day and hope that the Speaker let’s you refute the lies? Rude provided an immediacy to a very bad situation.

highhopes on September 15, 2009 at 11:12 AM

Rep. Wilson apologizes to the President and it is not enough for the Democrats in the House; the President says police acted stupidly when a friend of his refused to answer simple questions at a potential break-in, but the President only admits he “miscalculated his words” and does not publicly apologize to the police department and officer. Where was the Democratic outrage at the President or any outrage in the media back then.

Pelosi is very shrewd and conniving during political infighting, but she has a tin ear when it comes to determining what will sell in middle America; as seemly does the President and most other cloistered Democrats. Or maybe she just doesn’t care since her and the Democrats arrogance is so overwhelming that they cannot see too far into the future; Oh, November 2010 is way to far away and anyway, Americans have such short memories, they believe.

amr on September 15, 2009 at 11:13 AM

If the Republicans had ANY brains at all they would send out their staff to collect EVERY quote of hateful rantings, accusations of lying and outrageous behavior directed at Bush. They would gather the tapes of the democrats BOOING the president during a speech. They would take all of this to the floor during a full session and finish with “He who hath no sin cast the first stone”

Add a cherry on top of this by illustrating the out right lies Obama tells, and simply asking what you call someone who refuses to tell the truth.

flyfishingdad on September 15, 2009 at 11:23 AM

Oh, and to those who say Wilson was wrong, or rude, or whatever to call the President on a lie. When a man in Obama’s position is lying to the entire nation, doing so right in front of the legislature it is WRONG, and taking part in the lie, to allow that lie to go unchallenged.

What is rude, what should be a violation of decorum, of procedure, of tradition, should be our elected leader going on TV and lying to our face. Why that has EVER been put up with I have no idea. We get what we deserve I guess, and since we are so offended by straight talk, I guess we deserve to be lied to.

Just so I understand this, punish someone (Wilson) for violating rules of decorum, but do nothing to someone (Rangel) who violated tax code.

Rep. Wilson, take it like a man. You did the deed.

And afterward, DEMAND that the others take their punishment too.

Absolutely no consequences. When Jefferson wrote the rules, it was considered a public humiliation, but then the President would NEVER lie. It was considered a reason to duel to the death if someone impuned your honor.

I say bring back dueling. It would certainly cut out defamation suits. (Membership in the NRA would surge as would marksmanship classes.)

Actually, Obama was calling other people liars in the same speech that Wilson interrupted – where is the outrage there?

Will this be followed by a censure of Madam Botox for her lies about the CIA?
