Poll: Obama speech “no game changer”
posted at 9:30 am on September 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
George Stephanopoulos says that the Wednesday night speech “stopped the slide,” as the Washington Post/ABC poll results show Barack Obama’s speech on Wednesday night mainly flopped. Unfortunately, even with a ridiculous 11-point spread between Democrats and Republicans in the latest poll sample, Obama still can’t get to 50% support on health care leadership, dropped another point from the last poll on the economy, and lost six points between overall approval and disapproval over the last month:
Our new ABC News/Washington Post poll out this morning shows that the President’s joint session speech may have stopped his summer slide, but it doesn’t appear to have been the “game-changer” Democrats were hoping for.
No doubt Obama’s passionate presentation energized his partisans and began to unify Congressional Democrats, but this poll is the best evidence yet of where the public stands – and it demonstrates how difficult it will be for Obama to shape the debate and overcome skepticism about his plan.
Bottom line: right now, voters are almost exactly where they were before the speech.
Big question: will praise of Obama’s speech from moderate Dems (Ben Nelson called it a “game-changer” and President’s meeting with 17 Blue Dogs had a positive vibe) begin to impact public, or will more poll results like this shake the confidence of the Congressional centrists Obama needs?
Big question II: is dropping the public option the game-changer? Olympia Snowe says it’s the only way to get a bill through the Senate, and our poll shows a significant shift in support: from 46-48 to 50-42.
Once again, the entire poll results are skewed by the increasingly ridiculous sampling done by the pollsters. First, in terms of predictive results, it uses the worst possible method, “all adults,” instead of registered or likely voters. Next, the gap between Democrats and Republicans increased by a point from ten to eleven since their mid-August poll. Barack Obama won his presidential election by about seven points, and that was with some GOP crossover support. Does anyone think Democrats gained ground on Republicans over the last month?
Stephanopoulos even hails the skewed samples to claim Republicans (and Democrats) are losing ground with the voters, and that the “Perotistas” might be making a comeback. Try sampling likely voters for that analysis and see what you find. That’s precisely the kind of calculation that the WaPo/ABC methodology can’t determine.
So when Obama improves on health care from 46/40 to 48/48, reducing the Republican component in the sample from 25% to 21% might have something to do with “stopping the slide”. It certainly makes his declines on the economy (52% to 51%) and the federal deficit (41% to 39%, with disapproval going from 53% to 55%) more significant.
What does this poll mean? Given the fact that Obama continues to lose ground even in skewed samples of all adults, it means that he’s getting clobbered among likely voters. The speech didn’t even stop Obama’s slide. At best, it may have slowed his descent a little. That’s not nearly good enough, and it shows that the more Obama appears on TV to angrily repeat the same old slogans, the less people care what he has to say.

Obama better stop giving speeches – everytime he talks people don’t listen.
Wait – maybe he should keep talking – it will drive his support & polls numbers down to historic lows.
izoneguy on September 14, 2009 at 9:36 AM
A majority of the people probably didn’t even watch and they were mad that Obama was on tv yet again.
When it gets to the point that people don’t even want to watch or hear what you have to say, you might as well just go away and stop talking, you’re done.
I’m sure most people here at least watched Clinton when he made speeches, but I know a lot of people that don’t even care what Obama has to say because they know it’ll be a lie.

So here’s what it comes to: Pass a party-line vote for this poop-sandwich, make all of America take a bite, and blame it on the GOP for not getting a bite.
The sad part is, it’s almost certain to happen. The deplorably sad part is the MSM is already on board.

Well if I just turned to my local LLL newpaper and TV station, I would be informed that a majority support Obamas plan. Just like the 9/12 protest and Tea Parties, the MSM have got to know they can’t hide stuff or make up things without getting caught anymore, but they still do it.
Just a few months ago the Hartford Courant in CT was caught stealing articles from other newspapers and printing them under their own by-line. They explained it was a cross-over mistake from their web site to the printed news paper. They flat out stole news articles from other papers and printed them as their own knowing what they were doing was wrong, illegal and immoral, but they didn’t care. The MSM is going down the toilet and they seem not to really care.

Maybe if he stopped running his mouth he might have time to actually LISTEN to the big portion of the country that is saying No thanks.

If the Dems spent more time explaining why their plan is what we need and speaking with one voice, there’d have been something passed by now. Instead, all they’ve done is speak in generalities and stretch the truth (deficit neutral…c’mon), all while maligning criticism of it as astroturfed idiocy borne out of racism. Obama isn’t leading, and its hurting them a great deal.

What it really shows is that the Democrats and MSM over estimate the effect MSM on the public.
More and more the MSM is talking to fewer and fewer people. But the Democrats and MSM still think that 90% of the public get their news and believe in the tilted-left views of MSM.
Saul Alinsky would tell Obama that with his overexposure he is violating Rule for Radicals #7:
“A tactic that drags on too long is a drag”.
albill on September 14, 2009 at 9:58 AM
The speech didn’t fundamentally alter the numbers on health care, but it did switch Obama from negative to positive approval numbers on Rasmussen. Obama is now +4 in overall approval, and the passion or intensity index is up from the negative double digits to -3.
This might convince some blue dogs that it not as risky as they thought to hitch their fate to Obama.
But that’s only if the bump lasts.
BCrago66 on September 14, 2009 at 9:58 AM
What we have here is a failure to communicate. “Health reform” has nothing to do with Obama’s underhanded attempt to seize more power by enacting his socialist healthcare manifesto. Many things can be done but Obama’s leftist power grabbing aberration must be thrown into the garbage pile of history.
rplat on September 14, 2009 at 9:58 AM
While the speech was no game changer as to the health care debate, it was a game changer as to America’s view of their president. The speech came at a time when he was losing America’s trust. In this speech Obama was combative not diplomatic, defiant not responsive, radical not moderate, polarizing not unifying, and personally ambitious not statesmanlike. After a short bump, his strong negatives will continue to crater in the polls, especially among independents.

It’s [like] the economy, stupid.
Sure, public support may still be going negative, but it’s going negative more slowly. And isn’t that really the same as an improvement? Maybe not in some silly “mathematical” sense, but in a hopey-changey kind of way.
So just like unemployment is set to improve from 9.7% to 10% (or more) through 2010, public opinion on Obama and healthcare will continue to improve.

Something will pass. It has to. I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say that Obama has staked his Presidency on getting health care reform through. If he fails, he’ll lose a lot of left-wing support. And he’s already bleeding independents.
I still maintain that the economy will be the ultimate decider on his reelection chances(and that ain’t looking too good either). But he’s made Obamacare THE story for months now, so he has to get something passed.
