Hypocrisy alert: Famous disruptor now an etiquette scold
posted at 2:20 pm on September 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Carol Shea-Porter made herself famous in her district before running for Congress by disrupting her predecessor’s town-hall meetings with her protests. Now, suddenly, the Democrat from New Hampshire has remade herself into the Beltway’s Miss Manners, telling a crowd of supporters that Democrats never heckled George Bush during appearances before Congress. Not only is Shea-Porter a hypocrite, she’s not much of a historian, either:
Rep. Carol Shea-Porter lashed out at South Carolina Republican Congressman Joe Wilson for his outburst before a joint session of Congress last week and at Republicans in general for vocally opposing President Barack Obama’s health reform initiative while speaking at the Strafford County Democratic Party Picnic this weekend.
“They were behaving in a way we never behave,” Shea-Porter told the enthusiastic group of party faithful.
Shea-Porter claimed Democrats never interrupted President George W. Bush while he was addressing Congress.
“We sat there quietly and politely because that’s what we owe the President of the United States,” she said.
Well, in Shea-Porter’s defense, the Bush administration did start in 2007, when she first joined Congress. Oh, wait, no it didn’t; it started in 2001, which means that Bush was President in 2005 when Democrats did this during the State of the Union speech:
Before Republicans get too triumphant over this, though, I can also recall clearly a Republican series of catcalls during one of Bill Clinton’s SOTU speeches, when Clinton hailed numbers from the “non-partisan CBO” that supported one of his policies. In truth, both parties have interrupted Presidents with critical outbursts during speeches in joint sessions, and neither have much standing as etiquette scolds.
But Shea-Porter has even less standing than most, as she personally heckled then-President Bush during a Portsmouth appearance in 2005. Until now, Shea-Porter has hailed that as a badge of honor:
Do as I say, peons, not as I do. Will New Hampshire rid us of this turbulent hypocrite in November 2010? Let’s hope.

I guess Democrats in general operate on the principle that they can just say anything they want and it will become reality.
And in Obama’s case if it doesn’t become reality (or popular) just keep saying it!

What I find so stupefyingly amazing is that the Democrats aren’t even bothering to pretend to be honest and consistent. Their power truly has gone to their head.

Does being in Congress make women ugly, or do you have to be ugly to get elected?
BigD on September 14, 2009 at 2:29 PM
Bush never called a Congressional address in order to try and sell partisan, and un-Constitutional, legislation.
The Precedent called a Congressional address for purely partisan purposes, and he lied for the whole of the address. That must be open to dissent expressed publicly during the address. Otherwise, the idea is that the White House could call a Congressional address for anything, giving the issue some patina of “stateliness” and the address would only be allowed to have clapping and standing ovations but no dissent. That is just a crazy idea and only the most brain-dead person could support such a notion. Congressional addresses are not tools for the White House to use any time it wants in order to give the impression that its partisan views are fully supported by the federal government, as a whole.
The Precedent calling this extraordinary Congressional address to support his partisan health care legislation, and then complaining about dissent, was a disgusting abuse of the power of the office.

Tangential but still relevant here: remember that recent command by Obama to the Left, to “get in their faces” (Obama told crowds to harass the Right).

And Bill Ayers is considered a teacher of the year or something equally ridiculous by some in Chicago, award and everything.
What’s taking place, ongoing, is the Left attempting to overwhelm everyone else. If they say enough preposterous nonsense, make enough daily lectures (Obama and his perpetual, Daily Hour on T.V.), say enough conflicting statements even among themselves, insult enough, grab enough microphones on stage from young, trusting, hopeful pale females at awards shows, if they can break into enough private homes and claim them for themselves, if they can insult the Constitution and most Americans with unsupportable insults…if they can accomplish all that and keep it up, they’re attempts are to overwhelm the sensibilities of others.
I truly do believe the Left today is engaged in war on the U.S. population. Some Americans, unfortunately, went over to the Dark Side a while ago and today we see their work.

But instead of wasting time laughing at her, I would rather be learning how to get her a** out of there. Who’s her opponent? Who do I send money to? And why do you think she’s suddenly giving speeches about Joe Wilson? She’s trying to get nutroots money for 2010. She looks like she’s definitely beatable. Let’s not let this Barbara Boxer type settle into this seat if we can help it.

I’m kinda hoping the sane democrats across this whole country get rid of the liberal douchebags in congress, and the ones they can get rid of in the senate this go-round.
If they have buyers remorse they can always vote them out again, but even many SANE democrats agree that zero the anti-herobama needs to have his strings cut, as he’s turned out to be almost totally useless as anyone’s president.

How come no one is asking whether or not Obama’s partisan speech was even worthy of being given before a joint session of congress?
To me it didn’t rise to that level.
To me he was just using the House Chambers for his own benefit to try to make his partisan sales pitch seem more legitimate and to also shield himself from criticism.
Next time he tries it the Repubs should say that they hope the President isn’t going to use such a formal setting for another partisan speech/sales pitch in which he calls all of his opponents liars with sinister motives.
